Co-Simulation Framework For Power Distribution System Analysis With Humans In The Loop, Victor H. Ayon
Co-Simulation Framework For Power Distribution System Analysis With Humans In The Loop, Victor H. Ayon
Mechanical Engineering ETDs
Recent developments in the area of power generation have led to an increased penetration of storage and distributed energy resources (DER) in power distribution systems. As a result, new and enhanced energy management systems will be necessary as the deployment of DERs, as well as the need to control loads, continues to increase in the coming years. Advanced management systems are especially important to achieve resilient power delivery during emergency situations. During a blackout for example, a section of a distribution feeder could island to operate as a microgrid to ensure critical services such as water, food, and medical care …

A Novel Model Of “Remedy And Elimination Of Tuberculosis”, Akanksha Mishra
Master's Theses
Tuberculosis (TB), is one of the top ten causes of death worldwide. TB is commonly linked to poverty and creates poverty as it is the single largest cause of death in the 15-49-year-old age group in South-East Asia (WHO, 2017). It is also linked to the HIV population, and its leading cause of death. TB is effected by socio-economic factors, cultural factors, and health policy. My goal of this dissertation is to identify systematic approaches that shall support the mission set by World Health Organization (WHO): to eliminate TB globally by the year 2050. Measures might include addressing social barriers …

Repairing Gaps In Kinari-2 For Large Scale Protein And Flexibility Analysis Applications, Magdalena Metlicka, Mojtaba Nouri Bygi, Ileana Streinu
Computer Science: Faculty Publications
Pebble game rigidity analysis is a combinatorial method, implemented in our free web server KinariWeb, for extracting protein rigidity and flexibility information without performing costly molecular dynamics simulations. Due to the idiosynchrasies of the data in the Protein Data Bank (PDB), Kinari succeeds only on a fraction of the available files. Motivated by large scale applications, aiming at processing almost all the PDB files, we have recently developed a faster and more robust version, the phased pebble game algorithm. It is specifically designed to take advantage of the sequential structure of biopolymers. However, the structural data available in the Protein …

Comparative Molecular Characterization Of Typical And Exceptional Responders In Glioblastoma, Kristin Wipfler
Theses & Dissertations
Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most common and the deadliest type of primary brain tumor, with a median survival time of only 15 months despite aggressive treatment. Although most patients have an extremely poor prognosis, a small number of patients survive far beyond the median survival time. Investigation of these “exceptional responders” has sparked a great deal of interest and is becoming an important focus in the field of cancer research. To investigate the molecular differences between typical and exceptional responders in GBM, comparative analyses of copy number, methylation, gene expression, miRNA expression, and protein expression data sets from The Cancer …

Still Soldiers And Scholars? An Analysis Of Army Officer Testing, Steven J. Condly, Arthur T. Coumbe Dr., William L. Skimmyhorn Lieutenant Colonel
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
Still Soldiers and Scholars? sheds light on a neglected aspect of talent management, namely, officer accessions testing and evaluation. It does so by tracing the history of officer testing since 1900, identifying and analyzing key developments in the assessment process, and then offering recommendations about how the Army should revise its approach to officer testing. This book supplements a series of monographs written by the Army’s Office of Economic and Manpower Analysis (OEMA) and published by the Strategic Studies Institute (SSI) in 2009 and 2010. In those monographs, the authors proposed an officer corps strategy based on the theory of …

A Time-Domain Numerical Tool For A Wave Energy Attenuator With The Sph Method, Da-Wei Chen, Shuichi Nagata, Shiaw-Yih Tzang, Yasutaka Imai, Chih-Min Hsieh, Jiahn-Horng Chen
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
The wave energy attenuator is a floating device which operates perpendicular to the wave fronts and captures wave energy from the relative motions of two hinged floaters as waves passing by them. For establishing the time-domain numerical tools to evaluate the performance of a wave energy attenuator, a Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamic (SPH) model with mesh-free method was adopted to simulate the hydrodynamic behaviors of each floating object. Three different wave heights of 6 cm, 7 cm, and 10.4 cm of the same period of 1.22 s were commonly derived from typical potential oceanic zones offshore Taiwan and Japan. Comparisons of …

A Simplified Analytical Method For Estimating Flow-Induced Vibration Responses Of Hydraulic Structures Caused By Flow Fluctuation, Ya-Chao Wu, Lu Lu, Qin-Man Fan, Yun Dong, Chun-Yuan Zuo
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
In many hydraulic engineering investigations of flow-induced vibration responses, a model test is necessary but yet expensive. In this article, an equilibrium equation between the operation of fluctuating pressure and the work done by damping is established to provide a simplified analytical method for estimating the flow-induced vibration responses of hydraulic structures caused by water flow fluctuations. This approach is based on the Westergaard solution. The flow-induced vibration of water flowing around a dividing wall, the flood discharge vibration of the Liuxihe arch dam, and the flow-induced vibration of the Ertan hyperbolic arch dam are presented to explain the detailed …
Conquering Visual Challenges While Hunting Across The Air-Water Interface; A Study Of Foraging Day Herons, Holly Brown
Conquering Visual Challenges While Hunting Across The Air-Water Interface; A Study Of Foraging Day Herons, Holly Brown
Doctoral Dissertations
Among several visual challenges of hunting across the air-water interface are glare, which obscures prey below the water surface; and refraction, which causes submerged prey to appear where they are not. These challenges are exacerbated by the fact that prey have visual (and other) adaptations for detecting predators. To forage successfully on underwater prey, predators must compensate. Herons are good model animals for studying how predators compensate for visual challenges at the air-water interface; they are visually-hunting, fish-eating birds. Herons also regularly tilt their long necks (“head-tilt”) while hunting, which I hypothesized could aid in compensating for glare, refraction, and …

Design And Fabrication Of Micro-Pillar Based Piezoresistive Flow Sensors, Adimali Piyadasa
Doctoral Dissertations
This study is focused on developing a new type of micro-scale gas flow sensors to be used in critical environments such as combustion engines with high pressure high temperature gas flow and integrated micro electro mechanical applications such as lab-on-chip devices. Proposed flow sensor is based on piezoresistivity of Silicon micro column cantilever. Change in resistivity tensor due to gas flow induced stress in the piezoresistive layer results in generating of an output voltage proportional to the gas flow rate in the channel. Current results show that the anisotropic properties of the Silicon can be successfully used in the gas …
Modeling Iron Oxide Reactivity In The Environment, Nefeli Maria Bompoti
Modeling Iron Oxide Reactivity In The Environment, Nefeli Maria Bompoti
Doctoral Dissertations
Iron oxides and hydroxides are highly reactive mineral phases in natural systems since they interact with pollutants, controlling their fate and transport in the environment. Goethite (GH) and hematite (HT) are the most abundant iron minerals in nature, while ferrihydrite (FH) is a nanomineral with high surface reactivity. Subsurface transport modeling has usually represented the adsorption processes by empirical relationships, such as distribution coefficients (Kd) or isotherm equations. However, empirical approaches cannot account for variable geochemical conditions. These effects can be addressed by the mechanistic surface complexation models (SCMs). So far, the application of SCMs has been limited …

The March Of The Union Armies: James Henry Lane, The Union, And The Development Of Total War On The Kansas-Missouri Border, Alex Lahasky
Electronic Theses & Dissertations
James Henry Lane was a giant of Kansas politics during the mid-nineteenth century. His leadership during the territorial crisis of 1855—commonly known as the “Bleeding Kansas” era—contributed mightily to Kansas’s entry as a free state in 1861. During the early stages of the ensuing Civil War, Lane’s political and military presence on the plains was ubiquitous; he served simultaneously as a United States Senator and a brigadier general of the Union Army. Lane’s activities during the first year of the war provide the focal point of the present study.
With Kansas under threat from secessionist elements in neighboring Missouri, Lane …
