Rebirth Of Comparative Literature In China From The Perspective Of Medio-Translatology, Wei Guo Dec 2017

Rebirth Of Comparative Literature In China From The Perspective Of Medio-Translatology, Wei Guo

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "Rebirth of Comparative Literature in China from the Perspective of Medio-translatology," Wei Guo discusses the "rebirth" of Comparative Literature in China from the development of medio-translatology. He argues that, though translation has received wide attention in Comparative Literature, both domestic and foreign, especially in today's globalized world, the proposition of medio-translatology and systematic investigation by Xie Tianzhen and other Chinese scholars constitute an important way forward for translation in Comparative Literature. It makes translation an independent branch in this discipline, which is conducive to ending the longstanding confusions in translation under medio-translatology and translation studies on the …

The Theoretical Basis And Framework Of Variation Theory, Shunqing Cao, Zhoukun Han Dec 2017

The Theoretical Basis And Framework Of Variation Theory, Shunqing Cao, Zhoukun Han

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In their article "The Theoretical Basis and Framework of Variation Theory" Shunqing Cao and Zhoukun Han re-examine the conclusions on variation theory drawn from Cao's The Variation Theory of Comparative Literature. Drawing on the past three decades of Chinese comparatist practice, the proposal of variation theory in that book is a scientific endeavor from China. China's comparative literature has sustained a focus on comparison of literatures Eastern and Western. And Chinese scholars have long been aware of the heterogeneity of civilizations and the variability in literature exchanges. By demonstrating uses and potentials of variation theory, this thesis attempts to …

Examining Attentional Control And Processing Speed Deficits As Underlying Mechanisms Of Neuropsychological Impairment In Schizophrenia, Mayte Forte Dec 2017

Examining Attentional Control And Processing Speed Deficits As Underlying Mechanisms Of Neuropsychological Impairment In Schizophrenia, Mayte Forte

Graduate Masters Theses

Neuropsychological impairment is a key characteristic of schizophrenia (SZ), but its cognitive profile and underlying information processing mechanisms are not yet well understood. We compare patterns of neuropsychological functioning in 85 persons with SZ and 76 healthy controls across measures of intelligence, memory, and executive function. We then test the hypothesis that neuropsychological impairment in SZ is related to dual deficits in two related but distinct information processes: processing speed and attentional control. All research participants completed Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Third Edition (WAIS-III), Wechsler Memory Scale Third Edition (WMS-III), and Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST), all of which provided measures …

Whether Or Not 'It Gets Better'…Coping With Parental Heterosexist Rejection, Cara Herbitter Dec 2017

Whether Or Not 'It Gets Better'…Coping With Parental Heterosexist Rejection, Cara Herbitter

Graduate Masters Theses

Lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) people face the burden of additional stressors as a result of their experiences of stigma and discrimination regarding their sexual minority status. Parental rejection of LGB people in the context of heterosexism serves as a powerful minority stressor associated with poorer mental health (e.g., Bouris et al., 2010; Ryan, Huebner, Diaz, & Sanchez, 2009). Few contemporary theories exist to describe the experience of parental rejection. In addition, the extant empirical research has focused primarily on youth experiences among White and urban LGB samples, signaling the need for research across the lifespan investigating more diverse samples. …

Comparative Analysis Of The Dissolution Performance Of Aspirin Tablets In The Usp Apparatus 2 And In A Minivessel Dissolution System, Annmarie C. Walker Dec 2017

Comparative Analysis Of The Dissolution Performance Of Aspirin Tablets In The Usp Apparatus 2 And In A Minivessel Dissolution System, Annmarie C. Walker

Theses

Dissolution testing is a critical component of quality control procedures in the pharmaceutical industry in order to ensure that the final solid dosage forms have consistent dissolution properties. Dissolution tests are also routinely conducted to evaluate the in-vitro performance of solid dosage forms during pharmaceutical development, to aid in the behavior of formulations, and to optimize drug release from dosage forms.

The use of compendial dissolution test apparatus and techniques, such as the USP 2 (Paddle), to characterize the dissolution performance of oral drug delivery system is an established area of pharmaceutical science. However, this method is not always appropriate, …

Household Activities And Areas: A Reanalysis Of The John And Priscilla Alden First Home Site, Caroline Gardiner

Graduate Masters Theses

This thesis seeks to further understanding of early colonial life within New England through an examination of the John and Priscilla Alden First Home site in Duxbury, MA, excavated in 1960 by Roland Robbins. It specifically focuses on the composition and spatial distribution of the ceramic assemblage to discuss household activities and the spaces in which they were performed. The findings of the ceramic analysis detail a collection composed primarily of utilitarian vessels that indicate multiple subsistence farming activities including dairying. The spatial study reveals the significant patterning of these artifacts. It is proposed that these denote specific activity areas …

The Huawei Case And Its Aftermath: A New Test For A New Type Of Abuse, Sofia Oliveira Pais Dec 2017

The Huawei Case And Its Aftermath: A New Test For A New Type Of Abuse, Sofia Oliveira Pais

Yearbook of Antitrust and Regulatory Studies

Competition law sets limits on the exercise of intellectual property rights by dominant companies, namely in cases involving standard essential patents (SEPs). This article will examine the framework for SEP owners’ right to seek an injunction, discussing competitive problems that such situations may cause as well as the solutions adopted by the European Institutions, comparing them with the US and Japanese approach, and finally reflecting upon the opportunity for a new test for a new type of abuse. Although the three legal orders – US, EU and Japan – apply different laws establishing a general presumption against injunctions in SEPs encumbered …

The Role Of Economic Efficiency In Competition Law, Zbigniew Jurczyk Dec 2017

The Role Of Economic Efficiency In Competition Law, Zbigniew Jurczyk

Yearbook of Antitrust and Regulatory Studies

The main focus of the paper is the function of economics in the current application of competition law. While advocating further economization of the law, it is seen as necessary to widen the extent to which aspects of economic efficiency encompassing static and dynamic efficiency are taken into consideration in an antitrust analysis. Much attention is devoted to these issues, while clarifying what is meant by them, how they are to be understood and implemented in the practice of antitrust authorities, as well as discussing their importance for the promotion of innovation. It is noted that accounting for the economic …

Problem-Based Variations In Teaching Stephen Dobyns's 'Kansas' In China, Tao Zou Dec 2017

Problem-Based Variations In Teaching Stephen Dobyns's 'Kansas' In China, Tao Zou

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In their article "Problem-based Variations in Teaching Stephen Dobyns's 'Kansas' in China" Tao Zou and Hong Zeng discuss the multiple variations in their experience of teaching foreign literature in China, with the teaching of Stephen Dobyns's short story "Kansas" as an example and the positive results of their approach. Variations in a broad sense occur with the differences in the choice of literary text, translation, interpretation, and canonization. All these variations can be used to reflect on and resolve major current issues in teaching foreign literature, and to stage cross-cultural communication and creativity through foreign literature pedagogy.

Disobeying Courts’ Orders—A Comparative Analysis Of The Civil Contempt Of Court Doctrine And Of The Imageof The Common Law Judge, Carlo Vittorio Giabardo Dec 2017

Disobeying Courts’ Orders—A Comparative Analysis Of The Civil Contempt Of Court Doctrine And Of The Imageof The Common Law Judge, Carlo Vittorio Giabardo

Journal of Civil Law Studies

The aim of this article is to briefly tackle, from a comparative viewpoint, an academically quite overlooked topic: techniques of enforcement of lawful judgments. Despite a gradual convergence in many fields of law, common and civil law jurisdictions still maintain a striking diversity in the ways in which they react to non-compliance with court judgments. Whilst in common law tradition, failure to comply with a judicial order is considered civil contempt of court, in civil law countries this legal institution is simply unknown. Furthermore, it is only in civil law systems that failure to comply with a court judgment cannot …

Gaze-Contingent Displays For Interactive Text Enhancement, Divya Bajaj Dec 2017

Gaze-Contingent Displays For Interactive Text Enhancement, Divya Bajaj

Graduate Masters Theses

Eye trackers are used for measuring a person’s eye movements, for example, while reading text on a screen. This information can be used by scientists to study the human visual system during object recognition or text comprehension. Moreover, engineers can build gaze-controlled interfaces that trigger a variety of actions when the user looks at pre-specified icons on a screen. In my research, I studied how gaze-contingent displays can be used to enhance the information that is provided by texts. First, I implemented a simple scripting language that allows even users without programming experience to set up gaze-contingent text displays. The …

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Children with cerebral palsy (CP) often exhibit problems with language, speech, and communication. The aim of this study was to examine speech functions and perform an acoustic analysis of speech in children with CP having different levels of proficiency in communication. This study recruited 24 children with CP (17 boys, 7 girls; mean age: 8 years and 4 months, age range: 6-12 years). Children with CP were classified into two groups based on the Communication Function Classification System (CFCS): the mild group (levels I and II) and the severe group (levels III and IV). Children with CP underwent clinical assessments …

The objective of this study is to empirically examine non-linear (quadratic) effect of capital structure on firm performance (Tobin’s q dan ROA) and also the effect of Multiple Large Shareholder Structure (MLSS) and institutional ownership on firm performance. The sample is a non-financial company listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange with the study period 2009-2012. Data obtained from Data Stream and IDX website. Using fixed effect panel regression, this research finds that the capital structure has a quadratic (concave) effect on firm performance measured by ROE with maximum point at debt to equity of 1.95. This result indicates that the …

The Dutch Penal Code Under Review, Jeroen Martijn Ten Voorde Dec 2017

The Dutch Penal Code Under Review, Jeroen Martijn Ten Voorde

Indonesia Law Review

The Dutch Penal Code entered into force on September 1, 1886. Since then many parts of the Dutch Penal Code have been discussed. This article does not intend to provide an integral systematic overview of the Dutch Penal Code and the many changes it has been subjected to, but examines (in the first part of this article) it generally, with the aim of showing various arguments for a more thorough review of the Dutch Penal Code. Recognizing the need for revision of the Penal Code, the question arises as to what is meant by a revision. More clarity on what …

Legal Dilemmas In Releasing Indonesia’S Political Prisoners, Daniel Pascoe Dec 2017

Legal Dilemmas In Releasing Indonesia’S Political Prisoners, Daniel Pascoe

Indonesia Law Review

In May 2015, in an effort to foster peace in the restive Papua and West Papua Provinces, Indonesian President Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo granted clemency to five political prisoners, releasing them from sentences ranging from 20 years to life. The president also stated that there would be ‘a follow-up granting clemency or amnesty to other [political prisoners] in other regions’ (Jakarta Post, 10 May 2015). However, with up to 50 political prisoners still incarcerated in prisons around Indonesia (mostly Papuan and Moluccan separatists), Jokowi’s selective release policy faces several legal and political obstacles. This article outlines the various options open to …

Academic Dishonesty Among Accounting Students: Some Indonesian Evidence, Rijadh Djatu Winardi, Arizona Mustikarini, Maria Azalea Anggraeni

Jurnal Akuntansi dan Keuangan Indonesia

Academic dishonesty among students has been recognised as a major concern in higher education in Indonesia. Accounting research arguably need to give more attention to this issue. This is partly because of the importance of integrity as part of accounting ethics and professionalism. However, little currently known about academic dishonesty among accounting students in Indonesia. We address this issue by surveying 342 accounting students about their perception of academic dishonesty and what motivates such behaviour. Our respondents were from all first, second or third year undergraduate students at one state university in Indonesia. Drawing from Theory of Planned Behaviour, we …
