Meteorological Conditions Affecting The Dispersion Of Landfill Odor Complaints, Mateja Vidovic
Meteorological Conditions Affecting The Dispersion Of Landfill Odor Complaints, Mateja Vidovic
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
One of the factors recognized as affecting the dispersion of landfill odors off-site are complex meteorological conditions. A major issue is lack of consistent means to identify the odors and their intensity. The aim of this research was to investigate the influence of meteorological parameters (temperature, humidity, pressure, wind direction, wind speed, precipitation accumulation and weather conditions) on the frequency of odor complaints from nearby neighborhoods. Methods involved collection of ten years of data on odor complaints and weather conditions to determine if there were commonalities. Sophisticated statistical analyses employed did not reveal any relationships between odor complaints and weather …
Millennial Nurse Manager Perspectives On Their Leadership Roles In The Hospital Setting: A Phenomenological Inquiry, Heather P. Saifman
Millennial Nurse Manager Perspectives On Their Leadership Roles In The Hospital Setting: A Phenomenological Inquiry, Heather P. Saifman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (2016) contends meeting the challenge to transform care will require the successful leadership development, preparation, and role support of the next generation of nurse leaders. Despite the urgency to transform care, meeting the challenge to lead this charge cannot be accomplished without the successful recruitment and retention of Millennial nurses to leadership positions. Identifying the leadership role expectations and support variables that are important to these young managers and creating the milieus that support these views serve to address many pressing succession planning needs. This study explored the experience of being a Millennial …
Hackathons As Co-Optation Ritual: Socializing Workers And Institutionalizing Innovation In The “New” Economy, Sharon Zukin, Max Papadantonakis
Hackathons As Co-Optation Ritual: Socializing Workers And Institutionalizing Innovation In The “New” Economy, Sharon Zukin, Max Papadantonakis
Publications and Research
Hackathons, time-bounded competitive events where participants write computer code and build apps, have become a popular means of socializing tech students and workers to produce “innovation” despite little promise of material reward. Although they offer participants opportunities for learning new skills and face-to-face networking, and set up interaction rituals that create an emotional “high,” potential advantage is even greater for the events’ corporate sponsors, who use them to outsource work, crowdsource innovation, and enhance their reputation. Ethnographic observations and informal interviews carried out at seven public hackathons held in New York City during the course of a single school year …
Firm Social Network, Information Transfer And Information Environment, Avishek Bhandari
Firm Social Network, Information Transfer And Information Environment, Avishek Bhandari
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
I investigate whether or not a firm’s social network size (also known as social capital) impacts the quality of its information environment. Following social capital theory, I posit three potential channels that help bring an informational advantage to wellconnected firms. First, well-connected firms are likely to have timely access to a broader set of information that affords them the opportunity to disclose this information. Second, a social network fosters trust among social peers, which promotes the transfer of more accurate information within that network. Third, well-connected executives and directors have greater reputational capital at stake, which may encourage them to …
Foundations Of A Scientific Cognitive Theory For Literary Criticism, John C. Bronsted
Foundations Of A Scientific Cognitive Theory For Literary Criticism, John C. Bronsted
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Based on Noam Chomsky’s argument that the faculty of language is primarily a tool of thought whose purpose is to interpret the world, this dissertation argues that reading literature provides a cognitive experience like John Gardner’s “Fictive Dream” that mimics our interpretive experience of the world. Literary experience exploits language as an epistemological faculty that makes aspects of the external world intelligible. Yet the faculty of language is also capable of evoking entirely mental worlds that do not reflect the mindexternal world. Because the literary experience is entirely mindinternal, even the cultural knowledge we bring into play for its understanding …

Framework For Integration Of The Driving Simulator In Connected Vehicle Environment, Bratislav Ostojic
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Research on connected vehicles (CV) has attracted attention in the last decade due to numerous potential applications and challenges related to exchange of information between the vehicles (and infrastructure). Most of the relevant studies focus on these applications and challenges with the help of novel or existing simulation frameworks. The simulation framework often contains the mobility and communication components, and these components are frequently simplified. In this study, the authors aim to provide the detailed information for developing a fully V2X capable infrastructure within the lab environment. The physical components of the proposed infrastructure include: (i) userdriven Driving Simulator (DS) …
Home Range And Habitat Use Of Juvenile Green Turtlesin A Shallow Tidal Environment, Samuel Garcia
Home Range And Habitat Use Of Juvenile Green Turtlesin A Shallow Tidal Environment, Samuel Garcia
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
In this dissertation, a novel approach to modeling the scattered field of a periodic corrugated cylinder, from an oblique incident planewave, is presented. The approach utilizes radial waveguide approximations for fields within the corrugations, which are point matched to approximated scattered fields outside of the corrugation to solve for the expansion coefficients. The point matching is done with TMz and TEz modes simultaneously, allowing for hybrid modes to exist. The derivation of the fields and boundary conditions used are discussed in detail. Axial and radial propagating modes for the scattered fields are derived and discussed. Close treatment is given to …
Guenon Hybridization And Its Effects On Parasite Infection In Gombe National Park, Tanzania, Raymond C Jr Blair
Guenon Hybridization And Its Effects On Parasite Infection In Gombe National Park, Tanzania, Raymond C Jr Blair
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Fecal samples were obtained from guenons in Gombe National Park utilizing noninvasive, opportunistic sampling techniques. Samples were then examined for the presence of gastrointestinal parasites using chlorazol black stain, Lugol’s iodine staining, as well as concentration via fecal flotation with Sheather’s sugar solution. Results were analyzed using SPSS (IBM corp), and compared to other forested regions in Africa to determine whether hybridization influences parasite prevalence of these guenons living in Gombe; and if these guenons differ from similar guenons in other regions of Africa. The null hypothesis was unable to be rejected in all cases; hybridization could not be stated …
Image Restoration In The Apologetic In The Apologetic Rhetoric Of Professional Athletes: A Case Study Of Tiger Woods, Kobe Bryant, And Michael Phelps, Adam Epstein
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
This purpose of this study is to investigate the apologetic rhetoric of professional athletes’ off-field scandals. The three case studies used were Tiger Woods, Kobe Bryant, and Michael Phelps. A genre analysis was conducted to determine the success or failure of the speech by examining the image repair strategies used during the rhetoric. Further research revealed that the audiences’ perception plays a large role in determining if the rhetoric was successful or not. Two factors that aid the audience are the medium in which the public address was given, and the time it took to deliver the speech once the …
Identifying Shallow Foundation Failure Modes And Mechanisms Using Surveillance Of A Transparent Granular Soil Surrogate, Denys W. Purdy
Identifying Shallow Foundation Failure Modes And Mechanisms Using Surveillance Of A Transparent Granular Soil Surrogate, Denys W. Purdy
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
A transparent soil model of granular fused quartz is developed to study the mechanics of shallow foundations. Soil models, unreinforced and reinforced, prepared at relative densities 0.34 (loose) and 0.64 to 0.69 (medium dense) are tested using a rectangular footing (25 mm wide x 40 mm long) under strain-controlled loading. Digital Image Correlation is used to identify displacements of a seeded central plane parallel to footing width (B) and construct vector fields and contour plots. Fiber-reinforced soil model data analysis is inconclusive. For the unreinforced medium-dense soil, minimum and peak magnitude horizontal displacements occurred directly under the footing at the …

You’Re It! Tag Jurisdiction Over Corporations In Canada, Tanya J. Monestier
Journal Articles
In September 2015, the Supreme Court of Canada released its decision in Chevron v. Yaiguaje, a case that legal commentators had been keeping an eye on for years. The Chevron case has spanned several decades as well as several continents, and the enforcement action in Ontario was the latest in a series of procedural moves aimed at enforcing a nearly $10 billion Ecuadorian judgment against the oil giant. In Chevron, the plaintiffs sought to have the judgment enforced in Ontario against both Chevron (the judgment debtor) and Chevron Canada (a seventh-level indirect subsidiary of the judgment debtor). The Chevron case …
Improving Privacy With Intelligent Cooperative Caching In Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks, Stephen C. Glass
Improving Privacy With Intelligent Cooperative Caching In Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks, Stephen C. Glass
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
With the issuance of the Notice of Proposed Rule Making (NPRM) for Vehicle to Vehicle (V2V) communications by the United States National Highway Tra c Safety Administration (NHTSA), the goal of the widespread deployment of vehicular networking has taken a signi cant step towards becoming a reality. In order for consumers to accept the technology, it is expected that reasonable mechanisms will be in place to protect their privacy. Cooperative Caching has been proposed as an approach that can be used to improve privacy by distributing data items throughout the mobile network as they are requested. With this approach, vehicles …
Increasing Language Use In Parents Of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Christine Honsberger
Increasing Language Use In Parents Of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Christine Honsberger
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Research has demonstrated that higher levels of parent language use is correlated with later language use and intellectual development of their children. Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) display deficits in social and communication skills. They also demonstrate repetitive and restrictive behaviors or interests. These behavioral deficits and excesses may contribute negatively to language development, as well as parent and child social interactions, and communication exchanges. The current study used a nonconcurrent multiple-baseline design to evaluate the effectiveness of behavior skills training (BST) and on-going graphical and verbal feedback on increasing parent language use and child words and utterances. Results …

Behavioral Expressions Of Jealousy Across The First Two Years Of Life: Associations With Eeg Asymmetry, Cortisol Reactivity And Attachment Security, Melannie Platt
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Jealousy is understood as a system of physiological, behavioral, and emotional responses, yet few studies have examined these aspects of jealousy simultaneously in infants. Further, jealousy paradigms have not been examined as a potential stressor in infancy and thus typical cortisol reactivity and regulation patterns in response to jealousy paradigms have not been observed. In addition, the contribution of attachment security to infant expressions of jealousy has been vastly understudied. The present study seeks to fill the current gaps in the infant jealousy literature by investigating quantitative and qualitative changes in infant jealousy across the first two years of life. …
Cellular Basis Of Sponge-Sponge Associations, Megan Conkling
Cellular Basis Of Sponge-Sponge Associations, Megan Conkling
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Marine sponges interact and coexist with many different organisms. A two-sponge association between Amphimedon erina and Geodia gibberosa commonly occurs in the Florida Keys. Previous studies have only focused on the ecological influence of the association; they did not examine the cellular basis of the association. This association between A. erina and G. gibberosa was used in the development of an in vitro model to further the understanding of the cellular basis of natural sponge-sponge associations. In this study, sponge cells were cultured individually and in co-cultures and their responses related to apoptosis, cell death, and proliferation were monitored using …
Changing Consumer Behavior Through Ambient Displays In Smart Cafeterias And Detecting Anomalous Reporting Behavior In Wireless Sensors, Shiree Hughes
Changing Consumer Behavior Through Ambient Displays In Smart Cafeterias And Detecting Anomalous Reporting Behavior In Wireless Sensors, Shiree Hughes
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Food availability and food waste are signi cant global problems which can be mitigated through the use of sensor networks. Current methods of monitoring food waste require manual data collection and are implemented infrequently, providing imprecise information. The use of sensors to automate food waste measurement allows constant monitoring, provides a better dataset for analysis, and enables real- time feedback, which can be used to affect behavioral change in consumers. The data from such networks can be used to drive ambient displays designed to educate a target audience, and ultimately reduce the amount of waste generated. We present WASTE REDUCE, …
Charter School Closures In Florida, 2006-2016: A Population Ecology Perspective, Jorene Jameson
Charter School Closures In Florida, 2006-2016: A Population Ecology Perspective, Jorene Jameson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
As part of the education reforms of the 1990s, charter schools were proposed as a private alternative to public education, offering parents and their children greater choices. Publicly financed but privately operated, charter schools have now grown in numbers and influence. While there are many studies of student outcomes in charter schools demonstrating mixed results, one negative outcome of charter schools has been less examined. Since inception, 23% of charter schools nationally have closed and these closures are disruptive to parents, children, and their school districts. This paper addresses charter school closures from an organizational perspective. Applying theory from population …
College Professors As Classroom Leaders: Strategic Thinking Capacity, Leader Influence Actions, And Classroom Performance, Mike Sfiropoulos
College Professors As Classroom Leaders: Strategic Thinking Capacity, Leader Influence Actions, And Classroom Performance, Mike Sfiropoulos
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
This non-experimental, quantitative study explored the leadership of college professors and the relationship to student assessments of their teaching performance. The leadership constructs under investigation were strategic thinking capacity (cognitive agility) and leader influence actions (behavioral agility), which are rooted in the theories of behavioral and cognitive complexity. Research indicates that cognitive and behavioral agility are two factors that produce more effective results for leaders in varying organizational contexts. However, previous research does not include college professors in those studies. Thus, this study sought to explore professors as classroom leaders and the relationship between college professors’ cognitive and behavioral agility …
Comprehension Of An Audio Versus An Audiovisual Lecture At 50% Time-Compression, Nicole Perez
Comprehension Of An Audio Versus An Audiovisual Lecture At 50% Time-Compression, Nicole Perez
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Since students can adjust the speed of online videos by time-compression which is available through common software (Pastore & Ritzhaupt, 2015), it is important to learn at which point compression impacts comprehension. The focus of the study is whether the speaker’s face benefits comprehension during a 50% compressed lecture. Participants listened to a normal lecture or a 50% compressed lecture. Each participant saw an audio and audiovisual lecture, and were eye tracked during the audiovisual lecture. A comprehension test revealed that participants in the compressed lecture group performed better with the face. Eye fixations revealed that participants in the compressed …

Based on an analysis, the device successfully detected different types of epileptic seizures. The author conducted an experiment on himself to …
Differences In Nurses’ Perceptions Of Safety Culture, Nurse-Physician Collaboration, And Level Of Job Satisfaction Related To The Type Of Obstetrical Physician Service Delivery Model Utilized, Olga Abiri
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Creating a safety culture is the focus in the current healthcare environment. An inhouse, around-the-clock laborist service delivery model has been associated with positive outcomes, but little is known about the laborist structure’s contribution to the labor-anddelivery working environment. The purpose of this descriptive correlational study was to explore the effects of physician service delivery model on safety culture, nurse-physician collaboration, and nurses’ job satisfaction. An additional purpose was to examine associations between nurses’ perceptions of safety culture, nurse-physician collaboration, and job satisfaction. Ray’s (1981, 1989) Theory of Bureaucratic Caring and Homan’s (1974) Social Exchange Theory guided this study. A …
Distracted Driving: A Cross-Disciplinary Analysis Exploring The Effectiveness Of Public Service Announcements Regarding Texting And Driving That Employ A Filmed Narrative With Emotional Appeals, Jeremy R. Seibold
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Despite efforts to mitigate texting and driving in the United States, accidents as a result of distracted driving continue to increase, especially within the 16-24 age group. Considering the traits of the members of this age group, as well as the attributes of the various means that are utilized to mitigate such behavior, I hypothesize that the employment of filmed narratives in public service announcements is more effective than any other established approach. Testing the validity of this hypothesis, contributing to a lack of research, three methods of analysis were employed in this project: a textual analysis of a filmed …

District Leadership And Systemic Inclusion: A Case Study Of One Inclusive, Effective School District, Elizabeth C. Jekanowski
District Leadership And Systemic Inclusion: A Case Study Of One Inclusive, Effective School District, Elizabeth C. Jekanowski
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Inclusion is a federal education policy in the United States that challenges educational leaders. Despite U.S. federal laws requiring an inclusive education for students with disabilities (SWD), educators continue to struggle to implement inclusion. Some scholars argue that leadership is the key to inclusion, with most studies focused on principal leadership. Successful inclusive districts are rare, as are studies of these districts. The purpose of this in-depth case study was to describe and understand the leadership practices of SSSD (pseudonym), an inclusive (based on LRE ≥75% for three consecutive years) and effective district (based on district grades of As and …

The specific aims were (1) to determine the effects of story sharing on the health transition outcomes of depression and well-being of adults transitioning to LTC; and (2) to determine if the sociodemographic characteristics (age, gender, ethnicity, marital status, level of education (LOE), months living at LTC facility, choice to move, and health problem(s) that may have resulted in the move) predict depression and/or well-being. Story sharing was defined as the respectful space where one …
Iranian American Older Adults’ Attitudes And Proactive Actions Toward Planning Ahead For End-Of-Life Care, Zahra Rahemi
Iranian American Older Adults’ Attitudes And Proactive Actions Toward Planning Ahead For End-Of-Life Care, Zahra Rahemi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Ethnically diverse older adults are the fastest growing population in the U.S. This population may experience transitional processes associated with immigration, acculturation, aging, and end of life (EOL). Advances in technology lead to increases in care options, which can cause uncertainty to make decisions for EOL. Unmade decisions about care prior to becoming unable to communicate are associated with burdens of last-minute decisions at EOL, unwanted intensive EOL treatments for people who may die naturally of old age, financial and emotional costs, and decreased quality of life. In the U.S., a multicultural country with a variety of care options, advance …
Laughing In Space: Robert Heinlein's The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress And Towards A New Humor Framework, Ryan Thurmon
Laughing In Space: Robert Heinlein's The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress And Towards A New Humor Framework, Ryan Thurmon
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Humor’s effect on the audience’s relationship to the object, or speaker, of humor has often been neglected, and creating a framework by which scholars can examine how humor works to alter the relationship between audience and other fills this gap. Additionally, the definition of science fiction relies on the existence of a cognitively estranging other and under this definition, humor has not been thoroughly studied. This thesis attempts to explain how humor affects audiences cognitively, utilizing Hegel’s theory of self and other, and then applies this theoretical explanation to the field of science fiction and examines its effects.
Lifeline: Expressions Of Intimacy Through Paint, Ashley Nicole Cassens
Lifeline: Expressions Of Intimacy Through Paint, Ashley Nicole Cassens
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Lifeline: Expressions of Intimacy Through Paint is a body of paintings that seeks to bridge physical distance by sensually applying layers of oil paint to recreate the physicality of my husband. I allow the viewer to enter into a private exchange by the use of intimately charged spaces, like the bed, which demonstrates how paint can be a conduit for touch in absentia. By intensely remembering my partner in these works, I reconstitute my knowing him through paint and seek to move beyond mere representation to know and express him better. Therefore, these paintings not only bridge the physical distance …
