Automatically Detecting The Resonance Of Terrorist Movement Frames On The Web, Ugochukwu O. Etudo Jan 2017

Automatically Detecting The Resonance Of Terrorist Movement Frames On The Web, Ugochukwu O. Etudo

Theses and Dissertations

The ever-increasing use of the internet by terrorist groups as a platform for the dissemination of radical, violent ideologies is well documented. The internet has, in this way, become a breeding ground for potential lone-wolf terrorists; that is, individuals who commit acts of terror inspired by the ideological rhetoric emitted by terrorist organizations. These individuals are characterized by their lack of formal affiliation with terror organizations, making them difficult to intercept with traditional intelligence techniques. The radicalization of individuals on the internet poses a considerable threat to law enforcement and national security officials. This new medium of radicalization, however, also …

Exploring The Role Of Motivational Interviewing In Adolescent Patient-Provider Communication About Type 1 Diabetes, Laura J. Caccavale Jan 2017

Exploring The Role Of Motivational Interviewing In Adolescent Patient-Provider Communication About Type 1 Diabetes, Laura J. Caccavale

Theses and Dissertations

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is one of the most common pediatric chronic illnesses. Glycemic control among patients with T1D often deteriorates during adolescence; yet little is known about the most effective way for providers to communicate with adolescents to prevent this decline. Given the importance of effective communication, examination of effective patient-provider communication strategies is needed. The current investigation used Motivational Interviewing (MI) as a framework to help characterize naturally-occurring adolescent patient-provider communication in medical encounters and examined the relations between provider communication and T1D self-management and control.

Participants were five pediatric endocrine providers and 55 adolescents with T1D (49% …

Affordability, Utilization And Satisfaction With Care: A Policy Context For Improving Health Care Experiences, Anushree M. Vichare Jan 2017

Affordability, Utilization And Satisfaction With Care: A Policy Context For Improving Health Care Experiences, Anushree M. Vichare

Theses and Dissertations

Disparate healthcare experiences continue to pose a challenge; vulnerable populations such as low-income and racial and ethnic minorities may not be able to afford or utilize care when needed or receive quality care. The sources of disparities are complex and multi-factorial, which include health care system-level factors such as insurance and health care workforce. It is relatively less known to what extent these contribute to disparities related to a patient’s overall health care experience across three important domains – affordability, utilization and satisfaction with care.

This dissertation has three objectives. First, to assess how insurance benefit design affects health care …

Knockout Of Sphingosine Kinase 1 Attenuates Renal Interstitial Fibrosis In Unilateral Ureteral Obstruction (Uuo) Model, Xiwen Zhang Jan 2017

Knockout Of Sphingosine Kinase 1 Attenuates Renal Interstitial Fibrosis In Unilateral Ureteral Obstruction (Uuo) Model, Xiwen Zhang

Theses and Dissertations

Sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) is a bioactive sphingolipid metabolite and an important signaling molecule that plays a significant role in fibrosis. S1P synthesis is catalyzed by sphingosine kinases (SphKs), which phosphorylate sphingosine into S1P. The present study tested the hypothesis that SphK1-S1P signaling pathway participates in the kidney damage in unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO) model. Wild type and SphK1 knockout mice were subjected to UUO for 7 days or 14 days and then four groups of kidneys were collected: wild type control group (WT-C), wild type UUO group (WT-UUO), SphK1-/- control group (KO-C) and SphK1-/- UUO group (KO-UUO). The mRNA level of …

Mechanisms Of Motivational Interviewing In A Parent-Focused Pediatric Obesity Intervention, Nadia Islam Jan 2017

Mechanisms Of Motivational Interviewing In A Parent-Focused Pediatric Obesity Intervention, Nadia Islam

Theses and Dissertations

Pediatric obesity is a major public health epidemic with serious physical and psychological consequences. Difficulty engaging families in treatment is a significant obstacle in addressing pediatric obesity, especially among underserved populations. Motivational interviewing (MI) is a collaborative, person-centered communication style that has been shown to reduce attrition, increase attendance, and improve patient treatment adherence; however, little is known about the process of MI and how it improves treatment engagement. This study examined clinician and parent language in a pre-treatment MI session that increased initial engagement in a parent- focused pediatric obesity intervention (N= 81). Results showed that increased parent change …

The Prevalence, Predictive Factors, And Classification Of Intrapulpal Cracks In Maxillary Molars Requiring Endodontic Treatment, Husain Karashi

Theses and Dissertations

Diagnosis and treatment of teeth with longitudinal fractures is challenging. Cracks are usually not visible radiographically; they require a thorough evaluation to aid in diagnosis. Patients may be asymptomatic, demanding the dentist rely on clinical findings to make a diagnosis. Early diagnosis of the presence and extent of a crack is essential for the successful management of a cracked tooth. There is limited information in the literature regarding the prevalence or predictive factors of cracks extending into the pulp chamber of teeth. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of intrapulpal cracks in maxillary molars and to …

Separation Of Transition And Heavy Metals Using Stationary Phase Gradients And Chelation Thin Layer Chromatography / Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of Pogil-Pcl Workshops, Stacy L. Stegall Jan 2017

Separation Of Transition And Heavy Metals Using Stationary Phase Gradients And Chelation Thin Layer Chromatography / Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of Pogil-Pcl Workshops, Stacy L. Stegall

Theses and Dissertations

Gradient surfaces exhibit a variation in functionality along the length of the surface. One method for preparing gradients is controlled-rate infusion (CRI). In Part 1 of this work, CRI was used to prepare gradients for the purpose of separating transition and heavy metals. Initial work on this project was focused on controlling the retention of the metal ions by varying the number of amine groups, aminoalkoxysilane concentration, and the infusion time. The retention factors of four metal ions varied predictably with increasing number of amine groups, increasing aminoalkoxysilane concentration, and increasing infusion time, producing small but useful changes in the …

Conflicted Commons: A Local Makerspace In The Neoliberal City, Caitlin Cunningham Jan 2017

Conflicted Commons: A Local Makerspace In The Neoliberal City, Caitlin Cunningham

Theses and Dissertations

The commodification of culture, space, and resources is incentivized by neoliberal urbanism. In response, we have seen an attempt to develop collectively organized, oppositional spaces within urban places. The tensions that arise when considering the production of commons in the development of the neoliberal city are the central focus of this paper. As I will observe, these spaces are subjected to commodification as they become increasingly de-politicized through neoliberal ideologies. In order to theorize about these contradictory elements, I observe a makerspace in Richmond, Virginia called HackRVA. Specifically, I consider HackRVA as an urban commons. Through in-depth interviews and participant …

Misencounters, Francisco J. Besa Jan 2017

Misencounters, Francisco J. Besa

Theses and Dissertations

We are immersed in an era of supermodernity, an age defined by excesses: of information—the acceleration of historical time—spatial overabundance—the nullification of distance by electronic media and transportation—and an excess of self-reflexive individuality. In this context, the idea of place is giving way to non-places: designed spaces in which social relations are tangential and the boundary between the individual and the group is increasingly mediated. Media plays an important role in the creation of non-places, by favoring a removed form of communication made pervasive and extensive through mobile devices. The blurring of the line between media and actuality …

Yi, Observational Documentary Aesthetics, And The Identity Politics Of Transcultural Migrancy, Jiacheng Xu 4159187

Theses and Dissertations

There is a moment in Edward Yang’s acclaimed film Yi Yi (2000) in which a young boy in a conversation with his father observes that he cannot see what his father sees and that his father cannot see what he sees, prompting two questions: “How can I know what you see?” and “Can we only know half of the truth?” Unable to provide adequate answers, his father instead offers his son a camera. Later in the film, the same boy presents his uncle with a picture he took of the back of his head. When asked why, the boy responds …

Relocations Of The 'Outraged Slave': Transatlantic Reform Conversations Through Douglass's Periodical Fiction, Nikki D. Fernandes Jan 2017

Relocations Of The 'Outraged Slave': Transatlantic Reform Conversations Through Douglass's Periodical Fiction, Nikki D. Fernandes

Theses and Dissertations

Through their editorial arrangements of African-American, Euro-American and European poetry, fiction and news, Frederick Douglass’s anti-slavery periodicals (The North Star and Frederick Douglass’ Paper) imagine a cosmopolitan discourse that predates the segregated realities of the antebellum United States. In spite of Southern blockades against the infiltration of Northern texts, Douglass’s material space uniquely capitalized on the limited restrictions of his reprinting culture to relocate the voice of the ‘outraged slave’ onto a global stage. From the poems of Phillis Wheatley and William Cowper to Charles Dickens’s Bleak House and Douglass’s own novella “The Heroic Slave,” this project considers how …

Evaluating Stock-Trading Practices And Their Regulation, Merritt B. Fox, Kevin S. Haeberle Jan 2017

Evaluating Stock-Trading Practices And Their Regulation, Merritt B. Fox, Kevin S. Haeberle

Faculty Scholarship

High-frequency trading, dark pools, and the practices associated with them have come under tremendous scrutiny lately, giving rise to much hot rhetoric. Missing from the discussion, however, is a principled, comprehensive standard for evaluating such practices and the law that governs them. This Article fills that gap by providing a general framework for making serious normative judgments about stock-trading behavior and its regulation. In particular, we argue that such practices and laws should be evaluated with an eye to the secondary trading market’s impact on four main aspects of our economy: the use of existing productive capacity, the allocation of …

Spectrum Analyzer Based Phase Measurement For Emi Scanning Applications, Shubhankar Marathe Jan 2017

Spectrum Analyzer Based Phase Measurement For Emi Scanning Applications, Shubhankar Marathe

Masters Theses

"Often Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) scanning applications require phase and magnitude information for the creation of equivalent radiation models and for far-field predictions. Magnitude information can be obtained using a spectrum analyzer (SA), which is relatively inexpensive compared to phase resolving instruments such as oscilloscopes (scope) and vector network analyzers (VNA). The study focusses on the development of a near-field scanning method using a SA to measure the phase of the device under test (DUT) signals.

The first part deals with the development of the method in software simulation tools and testing it under standard test conditions. The second part deals …

A Review Of Random Matrix Theory With An Application To Biological Data, Jesse Aaron Marks Jan 2017

A Review Of Random Matrix Theory With An Application To Biological Data, Jesse Aaron Marks

Masters Theses

"Random matrix theory (RMT) is an area of study that has applications in a wide variety of scientific disciplines. The foundation of RMT is based on the analysis of the eigenvalue behavior of matrices. The eigenvalues of a random matrix (a matrix with stochastic entries) will behave differently than the eigenvalues from a matrix with non-random properties. Studying this bifurcation of the eigenvalue behavior provides the means to which system-specific signals can be distinguished from randomness. In particular, RMT provides an algorithmic approach to objectively remove noise from matrices with embedded signals.

Major advances in data acquisition capabilities have changed …

Hydraulic Conductivity Testing Of Cement-Bentonite Mixes For Use In Annular Well Seals, Amy Lynn Norval Jan 2017

Hydraulic Conductivity Testing Of Cement-Bentonite Mixes For Use In Annular Well Seals, Amy Lynn Norval

Masters Theses

"Grout is the material used in the annulus of water supply and monitoring wells to prevent movement of water from adjacent formations or from the land surface into the well. Grout is critical for preventing cross-contamination of aquifers through a borehole when a single well penetrates multiple aquifers and for protecting aquifers from surface contamination. The composition and emplacement of grout is regulated in most states, with standard mixes of bentonite and cement being the most widely used types of grout. Despite widespread adoption of grout regulations, surprisingly little literature is available to describe the effectiveness of different grout mixtures. …

Since lexicon is the most important component in SA, enhancing the quality of lexicons will improve the efficiency and accuracy of sentiment analysis. In this research, the effect of coupling a general lexicon with a specialized lexicon (for a specific domain) and its impact on sentiment analysis was presented. Two special domains and one general domain were studied. The two special domains are the petroleum domain and the …

Mining Asteroids For Volatile Resources: An Experimental Demonstration Of Extraction And Recovery, Egboche Christopher Unobe Jan 2017

Mining Asteroids For Volatile Resources: An Experimental Demonstration Of Extraction And Recovery, Egboche Christopher Unobe

Masters Theses

"Gaseous compounds trapped within carbonaceous asteroids may prove to be important targets for prospective space miners in the near-term. Volatile release is from hydrated, hydroxylated and carbonated phases present, making such bodies attractive as feedstock for the production of H2O, CO2 and simple organic compounds. A source of these species in orbit provides an opportunity to locally produce space-craft propellant and other life-support gases through the application of In-situ Resource Utilization (ISRU).

For this study, an experimental vacuum system was modified and used to test the technical validity of radiatively heating asteroid simulants to extract contained gaseous …

Facebook And Value Congruence, Andrew James Eyberg Jan 2017

Facebook And Value Congruence, Andrew James Eyberg

Masters Theses

"The current discussion on the use of social networking sites (SNS) in personnel selection is mixed at best. The present research utilized participant's Facebook profiles to determine if raters can correctly - and accurately evaluate work value dimensions as a measure of person-organization fit. Similar research was successful in capturing personality dimensions via SNS (Buffardi & Campbell, 2009). Additionally, the value dimensions of the current measure used -- the Organizational Culture Profile (OCP) (O'Reilly et al., 1991) has been correlated with aspects of personality. Rater participants (N=105). Every five raters were randomly assigned five profiles to rate, for a total …

Depth Determination Method For A Trailer-Truck Test-Bed, Aditya Thakur Jan 2017

Depth Determination Method For A Trailer-Truck Test-Bed, Aditya Thakur

Masters Theses

"A camera is considered as a good sensing device to obtain visual information from its surrounding environment. In a three dimensional space, a camera has a two dimensional plane. Projection of an object on this plane creates a two dimensional projection and loses information of the third dimension. A single projection is not enough to retrieve the lost third dimensional information about the object. Thus it makes it difficult to use a single camera as a sensing instrument. In this project, we have developed a method that determines the three dimensional information using a single camera. The method utilizes an …

Detection Of Mine Roof Failure Using Inexpensive Lidar Technology, Ali Abdullah M. Alzahrani Jan 2017

Detection Of Mine Roof Failure Using Inexpensive Lidar Technology, Ali Abdullah M. Alzahrani

Masters Theses

"Slope, Roof, and mine wall stability problems are some of the main reasons for deaths at U.S. surface or underground mining. The safety instruments were not enough to prevent that failure or even predict it before it occurs. However, the cost of such a tool that can be helpful in detecting roof failures is very high and not reachable in most instances.

The present study investigates the feasibility of using the M16 Leddar Evaluation Kit to detect the roof failure in mines. The M16 Leddar Evaluation kit cost is between 300$-800$, so it is the reachable price if it provides …
