Macro-Level Diffusion Of A Methodological Knowledge Innovation: Research Synthesis Methods, 1972-2011, Laura Sheble
Macro-Level Diffusion Of A Methodological Knowledge Innovation: Research Synthesis Methods, 1972-2011, Laura Sheble
School of Information Sciences Faculty Research Publications
Use of research synthesis methods has contributed to changes in research practices. In disciplinary literatures, authors indicate motivations to use the methods include needs to (a) translate research-based knowledge to inform practice and policy decisions, and (b) integrate relatively large and diverse knowledge bases to increase the generality of results and yield novel insights or explanations. This review presents two histories of the diffusion of research synthesis methods: a narrative history based primarily in the health and social sciences; and a bibliometric overview across science broadly. Engagement with research synthesis was strongly correlated with evidence-based practice (EBP), and moderately with …

As keystone species, sea stars serve to maintain biodiversity and species distribution through trophic level interactions in marine ecosystems. Recently, Sea Star Wasting Disease (SSWD) has caused widespread mass mortality in several sea star species from the Pacific Coast of the United States of America (USA) and Asterias forbesi on the Atlantic Coast. A densovirus, named Sea Star associated Densovirus (SSaDV), has been associated with the wasting disease in Pacific Coast sea stars, and limited samples of A. forbesi. The goal of this research is to examine the pathogenesis of SSWD in A. forbesi on the Atlantic Coast of the …

Implementation Of Wireless Area Network For Patient Monitoring System, Hassan J., Noor Kadhim Hadi
Iraqi Journal of Computers, Communications, Control and Systems Engineering
There are many critical cases in which the patients need continuous monitoring by the medical staff. Implementing wireless sensor network in medical field helps the medical staff to monitor the patients remotely. This system is designed to collect the patient’s physiological parameters, and store them in the database. The doctor monitors the patient continuously in real time. In this project the biomedical sensor nodes used are temperature and heart rate sensors; Arduino UNO is used as a microcontroller for data processing, and then the messages are transmitted to the base station via Bluetooth wireless technology. The Raspberry Pi is used …
Convolutional Code Constraint Length Over Rayleigh Fading Channel: Performance Evaluation And Hardware Aspects, A. E.
Iraqi Journal of Computers, Communications, Control and Systems Engineering
In this paper, the performance of conVolutional code constraint length for bandwidth efficient transmission over AWGN and Rayleigh fading channels is presented. Using intensive simulation and in terms of BER error floor, we evaluate the performance of binary phase shift keying (BPSK) mapping scheme. In addition, the hardware implementation considerations based on the Digital Signal Processor (DSP) platform of conVolutional decoding are discussed. To be more specific, the code constraint length effect on both memory management and clock cycles are considered.

Echo Cancellation In Telecommunications Using Variable Step-Size, Dynamic Selection, Affine Projection Algorithm., Sara M., Ali O. Abid Noor
Iraqi Journal of Computers, Communications, Control and Systems Engineering
This paper focuses on how to improve the performance of Acoustic Echo Cancellation AEC in voice communication systems. A variable step-size, dynamic affine projection algorithm named as DSVSSAPA is devised for this purpose. The proposed version combines the merits of the variable step size APA as well as uses dynamic selection of the input vectors to reduce its computational power, which has not been found in literature elsewhere. The version proposed in this paper overcomes drawbacks incorporated with the standard AP algorithm. These drawbacks are convergence speed-misalignment trade off problem and the high computational complexity of the algorithm. The proposed …

Design Of A Continuous Sliding Mode Controller For Path Tracking Of An Articulated Vehicle, Thaker Mahmood
Design Of A Continuous Sliding Mode Controller For Path Tracking Of An Articulated Vehicle, Thaker Mahmood
Iraqi Journal of Computers, Communications, Control and Systems Engineering
This article presents design and evaluation of a sliding mode control scheme, being applied to the case of an articulated vehicle. The proposed Sliding Mode Controller (SMC) is based on a continuous sliding surface, being introduced for reducing the chattering phenomenon, while achieving a better tracking performance and a fast minimization of the corresponding tracking error. The derivation of the sliding mode controller relies on the fully nonlinear kinematic model of the articulated vehicle, while the overall stability of the control scheme is proven based on the Lyapunovs stability condition. The performance of the established control scheme is evaluated through …

The population of higher education in America consists of nearly 20 million students enrolled in more than 4,000 colleges across the country. College enrollment in America is large and continues to grow rapidly. According to The National Center for Education Statistics (2013), 22.4 million students will be enrolled in degree granting schools by 2019 as compared to 19.1 million in 2008. While college enrollment continues to grow, graduation rates lag. According to the US Department of Education (2009), only 20% of students who start at a two-year institution graduate within three years and about 40% of four-year students graduate in …

Knowledge And Understanding Of Health Insurance: Challenges And Remedies, Aj Barnes, Y Hanoch
School of Psychology
As coverage is expanded in health systems that rely on consumers to choose health insurance plans that best meet their needs, interest in whether consumers possess sufficient understanding of health insurance to make good coverage decisions is growing. The recent IJHPR article by Green and colleagues—examining understanding of supplementary health insurance (SHI) among Israeli consumers—provides an important and timely answer to the above question. Indeed, their study addresses similar problems to the ones identified in the US health care market, with two notable findings. First, they show that overall—regardless of demographic variables—there are low levels of knowledge about SHI, which …
The Potentiating Effect Of Mandelate And Lactate On Chemically-Induced Germination In Members Of Bacillus Cereus Sensu Lato., Ah Bishop
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Endospores of the genus Bacillus can be triggered to germinate by a limited number of chemicals. Mandelate had powerful additive effects on the levels and rates of germination produced in non-heat-shocked spores of Bacillus anthracis strain Sterne, Bacillus cereus, and Bacillus thuringiensis when combined with l-alanine and inosine. Mandelate had no germinant effect on its own but was active with these germinants in a dose-dependent manner at concentrations higher than 0.5 mM. The maximum rate and extent of germination were produced in B. anthracis by 100 mM l-alanine with 10 mM inosine; this was equaled by just 25% of these …
Fifty Years After The Twenty-Fifth Amendment: Recommendations For Improving The Presidential Succession System, Second Fordham University School Of Law Clinic On Presidential Succession
Fifty Years After The Twenty-Fifth Amendment: Recommendations For Improving The Presidential Succession System, Second Fordham University School Of Law Clinic On Presidential Succession
Fordham Law Review
This Report begins with an overview of the presidential succession system, particularly the Twenty-Fifth Amendment provisions. The remaining Parts describe the Clinic’s recommendations. The first Part of the Clinic recommendations discusses executive branch contingency planning and outlines two steps the White House can take to prepare for presidential inabilities. First, the Clinic recommends that the President determine in advance situations where the Vice President should act as President under the Twenty-Fifth Amendment’s voluntary transfer provision at Section 3. Such a “prospective declaration of inability” would allow for transfers of power during emergencies when the Cabinet is not easily reachable to …

What To Do If Simultaneous Presidential And Vice Presidential Inability Struck Today, Roy E. Brownell Ii
Fordham Law Review
Dual incapacity is one of three major inability scenarios involving the Vice President that threatens the continuity of the executive branch. The current state of the law in this area, unfortunately, leaves only imperfect options for policymakers. This Article proposes that, in the event of a dual inability, the Speaker, the President pro tempore of the Senate, and the Cabinet should meet and then jointly declare that the Speaker is Acting President until either the President or Vice President regains capacity. At the same time, the Speaker—as the new Acting President—the President pro tempore, and the Cabinet should request that …
"A Dr. Strangelove Situation": Nuclear Anxiety, Presidential Fallibility, And The Twenty-Fifth Amendment, Rebecca C. Lubot
"A Dr. Strangelove Situation": Nuclear Anxiety, Presidential Fallibility, And The Twenty-Fifth Amendment, Rebecca C. Lubot
Fordham Law Review
This Article is a revisionist history of the ratification of the Twenty-Fifth Amendment, which establishes procedures for remedying a vice presidential vacancy and for addressing presidential inability. During the Cold War, questions of presidential succession and the transfer of power in the case of inability were on the public’s mind and, in 1963, these questions became more urgent in the shadow of the Cuban Missile Crisis. Traditional legal histories of the Amendment argue that President John F. Kennedy’s assassination was both the proximate and prime factor in the development of the Amendment, but they do not account for the pervasive …
A Voice For One, Or A Voice For The People: Balancing Prosecutorial Speech Protections With Community Trust, Immanuel Kim
A Voice For One, Or A Voice For The People: Balancing Prosecutorial Speech Protections With Community Trust, Immanuel Kim
Fordham Law Review
Prosecutors, as representatives of the public in the criminal justice system, are the sole advocates for “the People” in a criminal case. Thus, prosecutors are expected to maintain a particular level of integrity that would ensure a fair and just representation of the People. Despite this expectation, the wide discretionary authority prosecutors hold makes it virtually impossible to regulate their conduct. Furthermore, the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution protects many expressions of viewpoints, and such protections extend—albeit to a limited degree—to prosecutors, thereby giving them even more discretion in how they decide to handle their own cases. Nonetheless, the …

Part I begins with a primer on the laws of copyright. It provides an overview of the statute's history, as well as some background on particular doctrines developed through case law. Part II introduces the history of postmodern dance and the choreographer Trisha Brown, whose work will function as a case study herein. Part III analyzes Brown's work as it relates to the statutory language of copyright law and the doctrines of originality, functionality, idea/expression dichotomy, and fixation. The analysis uses Brown's work Man Walking Down the Side of a Building as a single example to provide a real sense …
An Americans With Disabilities Act For Everyone, And For The Ages As Well, Anita Silvers, Leslie P. Francis
An Americans With Disabilities Act For Everyone, And For The Ages As Well, Anita Silvers, Leslie P. Francis
Cardozo Law Review
The article argues that the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was originally intended to universally protect individuals from disability-based discrimination, rather than focusing on categorizing who is disabled. The authors contend that the ADA should be interpreted to prevent discrimination based on disability for everyone, regardless of specific eligibility criteria, and that the statute's effectiveness has been undermined by court decisions that emphasize categorical limitations. They advocate for a broader, more inclusive understanding of the ADA, aligned with its original purpose of combating discrimination.
Meaningful Access And Disability Discrimination: The Role Of Social Science And Other Empirical Evidence, Mark C. Weber
Meaningful Access And Disability Discrimination: The Role Of Social Science And Other Empirical Evidence, Mark C. Weber
Cardozo Law Review
In cases alleging disability discrimination in the provision of state and local government services, courts frequently hold that plaintiffs' claims depend on the question whether, despite the disadvantage that government actions impose, the plaintiffs nevertheless receive meaningful access to the government services. Whether people with disabilities actually have meaningful access is in reality a factual question, one on which social science and other empirically supported facts should matter. But courts frequently ignore evidence about the nature and level of access that people with disabilities have to government programs when decisions regarding those programs are being challenged. This Article catalogues judicial …
Using Domestic Law To Move Toward A Recognition Of Universal Legal Capacity For Persons With Disabilities, Leslie Salzman
Using Domestic Law To Move Toward A Recognition Of Universal Legal Capacity For Persons With Disabilities, Leslie Salzman
Cardozo Law Review
The article argues that plenary guardianship often violates the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and substantive due process rights by restricting individuals' autonomy and perpetuating segregation. It advocates for alternatives like supported decision-making to align guardianship practices with constitutional and ADA standards, promoting autonomy and inclusion.
Universal Design: Stop Banning Laptops!, Ruth Colker
Universal Design: Stop Banning Laptops!, Ruth Colker
Cardozo Law Review
The article argues that banning laptops in university classrooms, particularly in law schools, is unnecessary and counterproductive. The author advocates for a permissive laptop policy as part of Universal Design principles, which aim to create inclusive learning environments. While acknowledging concerns about distractions and note-taking effectiveness, the author presents empirical data suggesting that laptop use does not harm academic performance and can benefit students with disabilities without stigmatizing them.
Piloting Personhood: Reflections From The First Year Of A Supported Decision-Making Project, Kristin Booth Glen
Piloting Personhood: Reflections From The First Year Of A Supported Decision-Making Project, Kristin Booth Glen
Cardozo Law Review
The amazing Symposium on Personhood and Civic Engagement by People with Disabilities included a variety of perspectives: legal, cultural, historical, philosophical, and educational, including a panel on "Legal Barriers to Personhood" from which this article was derived. Despite legal analysis, theory, and even description, there was little "in the weeds" discussion of how personhood can actually be protected and preserved for persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD).1 Locating personhood within the human right of legal capacity, and positing guardianship in diametric opposition, this Article attempts to describe some of the lessons I have learned in the first year of …

Making Accessible Futures: From The Capitol Crawl To #Cripthevote, Faye Ginsburg, Rayna Rapp
Cardozo Law Review
The article examines the evolving recognition and integration of disability rights in American society, emphasizing the transformative impact of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the cultural shift towards inclusivity. It highlights the growing demographic presence of individuals with disabilities, the role of activism, and the importance of inclusive design and representation in media and politics. The authors argue that while significant progress has been made, ongoing advocacy is crucial to address persistent challenges and ensure the full recognition of disability as a valued aspect of human diversity.

Urban Youth Perceptions Of Agriculture, Sharon Jean-Philippe, Jennifer Richards, Kimberly Gwinn, Caula Beyl
Journal of Youth Development
To change public perceptions, particularly from urban populations, of agriculture and natural resources (ANR) fields, the University of Tennessee developed a model of strategic educational recruitment to extend beyond traditional college fair experiences to educate underrepresented candidates. The High School Agricultural Education Initiative (HSAI) provided 10th-grade students with opportunities to: (a) gain knowledge of and appreciation for disciplines in agriculture and natural resources, (b) learn about college admissions standards, (c) network with college students and staff to learn about campus resources, and (d) understand how a college education improves professional opportunities. The HSAI (n = 122) was effective at increasing …
