“All Students Are Brilliant”: A Confession Of Injustice And A Call To Action, Amy D. Robertson, Leslie J. Atkins Elliott

Curriculum, Instruction, and Foundational Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

The two of us (AR and LAE), in our teaching, research, and work with teachers, advocate for responsive teaching—an approach that seeks out and builds on the productive “seeds of science” in what our students say and do and assumes that “all students…are brilliant.” This pedagogical approach requires a commitment to listening to and intellectually empathizing with students’ scientific ideas.

Efficient Planning Of Resources And Utilization Of Alternative Building Materials And Techniques For A Residential Construction Project, V Srinivasa Raghavan

Manipal Journal of Science and Technology

Major research efforts are being focused on the significant usage of the alternative building materials, techniques, and on resource optimization for improving the effectiveness of cost and time of a construction project. Unless proper resources are planned and procured, no activity can be executed according to a prefixed time schedule. Project managers must take complex decisions under uncertainty conditions that sometimes extend beyond task durations. This paper provides an overview of the study dealings with the usage of alternative building materials, techniques, and resource optimization. The study has been carried out as two parts. In the first part, factors affecting …

Human-Bear Interactions Among Black Bears In Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah, And Polar Bears On Alaska's North Slope, Wesley G. Larson Dec 2017

Human-Bear Interactions Among Black Bears In Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah, And Polar Bears On Alaska's North Slope, Wesley G. Larson

Theses and Dissertations

Human-bear interactions are an important consideration of bear biology, as interactions can lead to destruction of property as well as injury or death for both human and bear. Successful analysis of why these interactions occur can lead to appropriate preventative measures and mitigation of further conflict. Bryce Canyon National Park (BRCA) is comprised of relatively poor bear habitat, but a black bear population exists on the Paunsaugunt Plateau, on which the park occupies the eastern edge. Park managers expressed interest in learning more about bear movements and, specifically, bear use of anthropogenic features following a number of human-bear incidents located …

© 2017 The Author(s). Plant-microbe interactions play crucial roles in species invasions but are rarely investigated at the intraspecific level. Here, we study these interactions in three lineages of a globally distributed plant, Phragmites australis. We use field surveys and a common garden experiment to analyze bacterial communities in the rhizosphere of P. australis stands from native, introduced, and Gulf lineages to determine lineage-specific controls on rhizosphere bacteria. We show that within-lineage bacterial communities are similar, but are distinct among lineages, which is consistent with our results in a complementary common garden experiment. Introduced P. australis rhizosphere bacterial communities have …

© 2017. Published by The Company of Biologists Ltd. Journal of Experimental Biology. Mouth brooding is an extreme form of parental care in which the brooding parent carries the developing young in their buccal cavity for the duration of development. Brooding fish need to compensate for the brood weight on the anterior portion of their body. For fishes with a compartmentalized swim bladder, gas distribution between the chambers may aid in regulating buoyancy during brooding. To test this hypothesis, we took radiographs of Astatotilapia burtoni to compare the swim bladder morphology of gravid, mouth-brooding and recovering females. Following spawning, females …

Exploring The Value Of Citation Management Tools In The Academic Library, Julia Glauberman Dec 2017

Exploring The Value Of Citation Management Tools In The Academic Library, Julia Glauberman

Library Scholarship

The vast majority of the literature on citation management software focuses on making comparisons and providing recommendations. Even articles that go beyond Consumer Reports-style product reviews lack any critical analysis of the relationships between libraries and the vendors who design and sell citation management tools. Librarians communicate with these vendors in order to get technical assistance, report bugs, provide feedback on the product, and make feature requests. In this context, the relationship between librarian and vendor is that of customer and merchant. However, libraries that pay for expensive citation management software subscriptions must market these tools to students and …

Stakeholders’ Understanding Of Family Engagement In An Urban School: A Qualitative Study, Lorette Mcwilliams Dec 2017

Stakeholders’ Understanding Of Family Engagement In An Urban School: A Qualitative Study, Lorette Mcwilliams

Educational Studies Dissertations

Family involvement and engagement in children's education has been a part of the educational landscape in the US for several decades. Research indicates family engagement, broadly defined as activities carried out by an adult in support of a child's educational development, has many benefits such as individual student achievement, as well as less traditional outcomes such as behavioral and mental health benefits, better school attendance, high school graduation rates, and secondary school enrollment. Family engagement has been included in federal education policy since the 1960s and continues in today's policies. However, teachers and parents often maintain different perspectives and …

Impacts Of Impaired Vision And Eye Diseases On Vision-Related Quality Of Life In Indonesia, Muhammad Asroruddin, Widya Artini, Tjahjono D. Gondhowiarjo, Tri Rahayu, Yeni D. Lestari

Makara Journal of Health Research

Background: To determine the impacts of visual impairment and eye diseases on vision-related quality of life (QoL) in populations with severe visual impairment (SVI) and blindness in Indonesia. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 134 respondents from, 5 different provinces, simultaneously with a validation study using data from the 2013 National Basic Health Survey. Participants aged ≥ 18 years with visual acuity of < 6/60 underwent an ocular examination and guided interview. The impact of vision impairment related to their QoL was assessed using the NEI-VFQ 25 questionnaire. The scores were then compared between participants with blindness (< 3/60) and participants with SVI (> 3/60 to < 5/60), and the causes of visual impairment. Results: Severe visual impairment and blindness were mostly found in productive aged females with lower education and income levels, and cataracts were the leading cause. Vision-related quality of life was lower in the blind group compared to the SVI group (p = 0.001). The impacts of visual impairment related mostly to distance activities (p = 0.007), social functions, and near activities (p = 0.002). NEI-VFQ 25 scores were lower in glaucoma respondents than cataract respondents. Conclusions: Results suggest that subjects with blindness had a lower total QoL score than those with SVI, in addition to the subscale scores. Furthermore, glaucoma disease had the lowest QoL score.

Poly Spotlight Control, Ryan P. O'Neill, C. Oleg Frandle, Anthony T. Lombardi

Mechanical Engineering

When this project began, The Cambria Center for the Arts Theater used a manually-operated spotlight. The sound created by the fans, along with the sheer size of the spotlight, required that it be housed in an attic room above the theater and shined through a closed window. This trapped a lot of heat in the room and involved some risk with climbing into and out of the attic room. This project sought to remedy those issues by mounting a pair of newer LED spotlights inside the theater. Doing this required a method for remotely controlling and actuating the angular position …

Assessing Equivalent Temperature Trends In Major Eastern Us Cities, Mercedes Lissette Gomez-Jacobo Dec 2017

Assessing Equivalent Temperature Trends In Major Eastern Us Cities, Mercedes Lissette Gomez-Jacobo

Theses

Summer (JJA) temperature (T) and equivalent temperature (TE) for 18 of the largest cities in the eastern United States are investigated for two time periods: 1948-2014 and 1973-2014. Because temperature provides an incomplete description of lower tropospheric heat content, we supplement with TE, which also accounts for the energy associated with moisture. An auxiliary investigation using air mass data from the Spatial Synoptic Classification (SSC) augments the investigation of T and TE trends. The trend analysis revealed significant trends in Tmin at all stations over the 67-year time period and over most stations for the shorter (41-year) period. Minimum TE …
