Organizational Capabilities, Strategic Management Accounting And Firm Performance, Tan Ah Lay, Ruzita Jusoh
Organizational Capabilities, Strategic Management Accounting And Firm Performance, Tan Ah Lay, Ruzita Jusoh
Jurnal Akuntansi dan Keuangan Indonesia
From a resource-based view perspective, the paper provides empirical evidence on new emerging strategic management accounting (SMA), its association with organizational capabilities (market orientation, entrepreneurship, innovativeness and organizational learning) and the interlinkages among these four elements of organizational capabilities. Partial least squares (PLS) technique was used to test the contingency model. Using the mail survey data of 103 manufacturing strategic business units (SBUs) of public listed companies in Malaysia, the results found that the four organizational capabilities - market orientation, entrepreneurship, innovativeness and organizational learning - collectively give rise to positional advantage leading to enhanced firm performance. SMA techniques are …
Legal Dilemmas In Releasing Indonesia’S Political Prisoners, Daniel Pascoe
Legal Dilemmas In Releasing Indonesia’S Political Prisoners, Daniel Pascoe
Indonesia Law Review
In May 2015, in an effort to foster peace in the restive Papua and West Papua Provinces, Indonesian President Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo granted clemency to five political prisoners, releasing them from sentences ranging from 20 years to life. The president also stated that there would be ‘a follow-up granting clemency or amnesty to other [political prisoners] in other regions’ (Jakarta Post, 10 May 2015). However, with up to 50 political prisoners still incarcerated in prisons around Indonesia (mostly Papuan and Moluccan separatists), Jokowi’s selective release policy faces several legal and political obstacles. This article outlines the various options open to …
Competition Merger Review For Cross-Border Mergers And Acquisitions In Indonesia, Zulheri Zulheri
Competition Merger Review For Cross-Border Mergers And Acquisitions In Indonesia, Zulheri Zulheri
Indonesia Law Review
This article aimed at expressing ideas on a legal construction of competition merger review (CMR) on Crossborder Mergers and Acquisitions (CBM&A) that have Indonesian legal dimension. The problem has been triggered by the lack of CMR guidelines for CBM&A to nurture a fair and sustainable business competition (FSBC). Consequently, the existing guideline is inadequate for reviewing CBM&A proposals which have a multi-jurisdiction dimension character. As a result, merging (gigantic) companies doing business in Indonesia have enormous opportunities to engage in anti-competitive behavior in the domestic market. In its turn, it brings the impact of reducing competition itself whereby national companies …
Travel Writing In Place Branding - A Case Study On Nantes, C Mansfield
Travel Writing In Place Branding - A Case Study On Nantes, C Mansfield
Plymouth Business School
One of the main channels to communicate city branding, designed to attract British tourists for short breaks, is the travel section of the UK national press. With many newspapers now online for readers to browse, city branders have an accessible source of data to evaluate how their offer is presented. In this research, a collection of travel articles is analysed into themes for comparison with the elements used in place branding. The analysis discovers that 3 key elements used by commercial and academic place branders are not covered by contributors to the travel sections of the UK national press. The …

Academic Dishonesty Among Accounting Students: Some Indonesian Evidence, Rijadh Djatu Winardi, Arizona Mustikarini, Maria Azalea Anggraeni
Jurnal Akuntansi dan Keuangan Indonesia
Academic dishonesty among students has been recognised as a major concern in higher education in Indonesia. Accounting research arguably need to give more attention to this issue. This is partly because of the importance of integrity as part of accounting ethics and professionalism. However, little currently known about academic dishonesty among accounting students in Indonesia. We address this issue by surveying 342 accounting students about their perception of academic dishonesty and what motivates such behaviour. Our respondents were from all first, second or third year undergraduate students at one state university in Indonesia. Drawing from Theory of Planned Behaviour, we …

Avoiding China's Capital Market: Evidence From Hong Kong-Listed P-Chips And Red-Chips, Weishi Jia, Grace Powell, Jingram Zhao
Business Faculty Publications
The purpose of this paper is to explore the puzzle of why so many Chinese firms eschew listings in China. Hundreds of firms founded in China have reorganized themselves as overseas corporations and listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. These firms are called Red-chips if they are state-owned enterprises (SOEs) and Pchips if they are not state-owned (non-SOEs). To examine the rationale behind the listing decisions of P-chips and Red-chips, we compare the characteristics of Red-chips (P-chips) with SOEs (non-SOEs) listed on China stock exchanges. We find that SOEs are more likely to list in China. Moreover, while we …

Transforming Finance And Business Education: Finance’S Unique Opportunities, James A. F. Stoner, Frank M. Werner
Transforming Finance And Business Education: Finance’S Unique Opportunities, James A. F. Stoner, Frank M. Werner
Journal of Management for Global Sustainability
Mankind faces the challenge of transforming the existing global production, distribution, and consumption system into one that is more just and sustainable and which the Earth’s resources can support (e.g., Francis, 2015). Unfortunately, current business education is “part of the problem” of global unsustainability as it supports, enables, justifies, and intensifies the unsustainable aspects of the existing business system. Thus, while all people have opportunities to contribute to this transformation and are “called” to do so, university administrators and professors in all disciplines have a special opportunity and obligation to heed that call. This article is the second of three …
Toward A Theory Of The Arts And Sustainability, Nancy Bertaux
Toward A Theory Of The Arts And Sustainability, Nancy Bertaux
Journal of Management for Global Sustainability
To make real progress on what can only be classified as environmental emergencies, we need a wide base of public consensus for action given that public motivation and involvement is a prerequisite for policymakers to implement what our scientists urge us to do. In this light, crucial thresholds of public motivation and involvement can be created by reaching into the hearts of individuals, an area of competitive advantage for the arts. Efforts to enhance understanding in this arena, however, must incorporate sufficient complexity given highly complex and inter-related challenges in sustainability. This article thus presents a theoretical framework for the …

Journal of Management for Global Sustainability
This study focuses on the CEO-asserted critical need for sustainability in corporate strategy and MBA student perceptions of the extent to which their respective programs prepare them to handle sustainability challenges successfully. Students in one Polish and two U.S. mid-tier MBA programs were surveyed regarding their perceptions of four issues: 1) the link between sustainability practices and corporate performance; 2) the barriers to embedding sustainability practices in their current job; 3) the effects of being a sustainability advocate on their careers; and 4) the efficacy of their MBA programs in fostering leadership perspectives and skills related to sustainability. While students …

Faith-Based Socially Responsible Enterprises: Selected Philippine Cases, Aliza D. Racelis
Journal of Management for Global Sustainability
Faith-based organizations (FBOs) have long played a role in international development and are increasingly involved in sustainability initiatives. Since they are motivated by a distinctive set of values, have particular modes of operation and governance, and hold a unique place within communities and the larger society, these organizations are poised to be distinctively successful and sustainable. In the case of the Philippines, the situation is unique in the sense that there are a large number of Christian business leaders and entrepreneurs who put their faith “to the plow.” Based on a review of the literature on faith-based social enterprises as …

Improvisational Teaching For Emergent Bilinguals, Denchai Prabjandee
Improvisational Teaching For Emergent Bilinguals, Denchai Prabjandee
Journal of Educational Research and Innovation
The present collaborative ethnographic case study was design to explore teaching practices for English Language Learners (ELLs) in the United States, hereafter called "emergent bilinguals" (García, 2009). Through the theoretical lens of ethnographic vulnerability (Behar, 1996), I conducted 40-hour observations, four interviews, and artifact collections. By using an impressionist tale writing style throughout this article (Maanen, 2011), this paper presents the journey of an elementary school teacher who tries to employ classroom practices, teaching strategies, and assessments to educate emergent bilinguals. Drawing on ethnographic data, I propose an effective teaching approach called improvisational teaching. This teaching approach may be beneficial …

Ict Use By Smallholder Farmers In Rural Mozambique: A Case Study Of Two Villages In Central Mozambique, Kathlee Freeman, Fridah Mubichi
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
This study adds to the empirical evidence of information and communication technology (ICT) use by smallholder farmers in Sub-Saharan Africa. The study draws on qualitative data collected from eight focus groups segmented by gender and consisting of adult farmers in two villages in central Mozambique. Special attention was given to the types of ICTs that farmers have access to and the dissemination of agriculture information through various ICTs. Findings indicate that the characteristics of ICTs explain why cell phone and radio use is prevalent, while access to television remains limited. The type of information accessed also varied by ICT type, …

Livestock-Livelihood Linkages In Uganda: The Benefits For Women And Rural Households?, Elizabeth Ransom, Carmen Bain, Iim Halimatusa'diyah
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
Livestock are an important component of rural households and gendered livelihood practices throughout sub-Saharan Africa. Widespread within the development literature is the belief in the livestock ladder, with poorer households often owning small stock and wealthier households owning large stock, with the assumption that poor households can utilize livestock to build their asset base and over time this would allow poorer households to expand from small stock to large stock, and in so doing climb the livestock ladder. There is also an assumption in the literature that women are more likely to oversee small stock. In addition, some well-known agricultural …
Energy And The Rural Sociological Imagination, Thomas M. Beckley
Energy And The Rural Sociological Imagination, Thomas M. Beckley
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
Energy is the lifeblood of any society. It drives a society’s material culture and the reproduction of that culture. It is essential for the production of food, shelter, clothing, and for transportation, trade, and communication. This article makes the case for a rural sociology of energy. Relative to the impact that energy issues have for rural places and people, energy, as a subject area, has been understudied by rural sociologists and is infrequently represented in the journals devoted to rural sociology and rural studies. Energy production and distribution activities such as coal mining, uranium mining, hydroelectric dams, wind farms, nuclear, …
Effect Of Mobile Telecommunication Technologies On Globalization Of Nigerian Rural Areas, O. A. Lawal-Adebowale
Effect Of Mobile Telecommunication Technologies On Globalization Of Nigerian Rural Areas, O. A. Lawal-Adebowale
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
The globalization of a country is today measured with respect to indices of globalization such as the Maastricht Globalization Index (MGI) and the Konjunkturforschungsstelle (KOF). These indices of national globalization often have an urban bias. This study however explores the extent to which these international measures include rural environments of the globalizing country. Application of the MGI/KOF indices for determination of the Nigerian rural environment inclusion in globalization showed that the country’s rural communities were mainly integrated technologically by virtue of telephony (communication technology) penetration of rural areas. An attempt to modify the MGI/KOF globalization indexes for rural inclusion showed …

Heterogeneity Of Rural Consumer Perceptions Of Health Service Access Across Four Regions Of Victoria, Daniel Terry, Kaye Ervin, Alan Crouch, Kristen Glenister, Lisa Bourke
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
Access to a range of services, including health care, ranks among the key determinants of health and wellbeing. It varies with both health system supply factors and consumer demand characteristics. For rural populations, access to health services can be restricted for a variety of reasons, contributing to poorer health outcomes compared with metropolitan populations. Access to health care differs between communities, despite commonly being seen as homogenous in terms of lack of service and poor access. This article seeks to examine consumer perceptions of access to health service in four shires in rural Victoria and explore differences between rural areas. …

Semantic Hierarchies For Extracting, Modeling, And Connecting Compliance Requirements In Information Security Control Standards, Matthew L. Hale, Rose F. Gamble
Interdisciplinary Informatics Faculty Publications
Companies and government organizations are increasingly compelled, if not required by law, to ensure that their information systems will comply with various federal and industry regulatory standards, such as the NIST Special Publication on Security Controls for Federal Information Systems (NIST SP-800-53), or the Common Criteria (ISO 15408-2). Such organizations operate business or mission critical systems where a lack of or lapse in security protections translates to serious confidentiality, integrity, and availability risks that, if exploited, could result in information disclosure, loss of money, or, at worst, loss of life. To mitigate these risks and ensure that their information systems …

Innovating For Impact: The Next Evolution Of Library Consortia, Xan Arch, Isaac Gilman
Collaborative Librarianship
Academic library consortia have traditionally focused on resource sharing and e-resource purchasing as core programs and value propositions for members. However, as academic libraries increasingly look beyond financial value and seek to demonstrate impact on institutional priorities and student outcomes, consortia must evolve to provide services that support those goals. This paper presents selected examples of innovative consortial programs that can have a significant impact on teaching, learning, and research at members’ institutions as suggested models for other consortia that may be engaged in reviewing strategic priorities and programs.

Structure Or Relationship? Rethinking Family Influences On Juvenile Delinquency In Malaysia, Tan Bee Piang, Zuraini Jubail Osman, Noor Banu Mahadir
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
A broken family structure and poor family relationship are seen as contributing to delinquent behavior in different ways. Despite Malaysian society being strongly focused on family values, there have been significant increases in the rates of both divorce and single-parent families. Thus, there is the question of whether these changes in family structure are a contributing factor to the increasing rate of juvenile delinquency seen in recent years. This study aims to examine the relative influences of family structure and family relationship on juvenile delinquent behavior in Malaysia. A sample of 196 juveniles from two rehabilitation centers in Malaysia participated …

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
Betel quid is a carcinogenic psychoactive preparation, often containing tobacco, which is widely consumed in Myanmar. Studies on betel quid dependence have illuminated betel quid chewers’ demographics and reasons for chewing, but dependence formation is not fully understood. This study aims to describe the social context, patterns of use, and subjective experiences of betel quid chewing among novice and dependent chewers, and to analyze the hidden structural factors that contribute to the emergence of betel quid dependence. Data on the subjective and objective aspects of betel quid chewing were collected through a five-month ethnographic study in Mandalay, Myanmar. Betel quid …
