Communicative Solutions To The United States' Political Polarization, Codey Albers

Honors Projects

In 2016, political polarization in the United States reached levels unprecedented in the last three decades. This paper analyzes over thirty sources in an attempt to explore the extent to which the political divide exists in the US, to discover some possible reasons for the severe polarization, and to offer a list of possible solutions to the problem, solutions that everyday citizens can enact to contribute to a more open, discursive, and respectful society where all views can be heard, respected, and where democracy can thrive. Using a critical communication approach, this paper explains complex communication theory using language accessible …

Testing The Measurement Invariance Of Data From The Utrecht Work Engagement Scale By Generational Cohort For Employees In The Leisure And Hospitality Industry, Greggory Keiffer Dec 2017

Testing The Measurement Invariance Of Data From The Utrecht Work Engagement Scale By Generational Cohort For Employees In The Leisure And Hospitality Industry, Greggory Keiffer

Human Resource Development Theses and Dissertations

Group comparison in social science research is a common and informative practice. The establishment of measurement invariance between groups is a statistical prerequisite before making group mean comparisons; however, researchers often do not include measurement invariance assessments before making group comparisons. The current study assessed the measurement invariance for data from the short version of the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES-9) for the generational cohort groups of Boomers and Millennials within the leisure and hospitality industry. Group equivalency was determined by utilizing propensity score matching before conducting measurement invariance assessments through the confirmatory factor analysis technique. Measurement invariance results between …

Keeping Glass Recycling Financially Sustainable: A Cost - Benefit Analysis, Tia Newlove Dec 2017

Keeping Glass Recycling Financially Sustainable: A Cost - Benefit Analysis, Tia Newlove

Honors Projects

Previous research has shown the value that recycled glass, cullet, has in glass container production, road construction and fiberglass production. This cost - benefit analysis explores the value chain of cullet to glass container manufacturers. Glass container manufacturers have a tradeoff between the economic limitations and the environmental benefits of using cullet in the manufacturing process. The cost of cullet is greatly impacted by the location of recycled glass processors relative to the location of glass container manufacturing plants. Strategic investment by glass container manufacturers into maintaining the supply of cullet is essential as recycling programs evolve in the United …

Understanding A Discourse Marker In Quito, Ecuador, Hannah Jesberger

Honors Projects

The present research project examines the possible factors to explain the word-final /f/ in Ecuadorian Spanish including but not limited to: where it is used, who uses it (gender, age ranges, social class), and with which words it is most commonly used. As the first extensive research study on the word-final /f/, the project may lead to other investigations of this phenomenon and other features of Ecuadorian Spanish. In addition, if there are other variations of the marker pues in the Spanish varieties spoken in different regions and/or countries, researchers can use this present study as basis to analyze the …

Perceptions Of Emr Documentation In The Home Setting, Catherine Hupf

Applied Research Projects

The use of technology in healthcare is ever increasing in our hospitals, doctor’s offices, and clinics. Studies have been done to ascertain the perceptions of patients on the use of technology in the places that provide them care. This project was done for a population that does not always receive care where the clinician is. The care is in their home by clinicians who are using laptop computers and documenting in the EMR. Home care and hospice patients or their caregivers were asked to complete a survey with seven questions scored with a 5-point Likert scale to find that they …

Honors Projects

The intended purpose of this book is to serve as a grammatically rich resource of the grammatical structure: third person singular present tense. It is targets preschool age children with or at risk for a specific language impairment (SLI). More specifically, this book can be used as a clinical tool by speech-language pathologists in order to assist those with language delays in acquiring this difficult structure. Creating a clinical resource with an abundance of third person …

The Power Of Discomfort In Learning Abroad, Alexis Barge Dec 2017

The Power Of Discomfort In Learning Abroad, Alexis Barge

Capstone Collection

Currently, the majority of students who study abroad do so through short-term programs. In fact, in 2015 over 60% of students who studied abroad chose short-term programs lasting eight weeks or less (IIE, 2016). It has long been the belief that study abroad has the potential to be a life-changing and transformative experience, not just academically but also for personal growth and development. Many professionals agree that the students who go abroad on short-term study abroad programs are significantly less likely to experience meaningful learning outside of the subject matter they are studying, and are less likely to experience personal …

The Lived Experiences Of Parents With Chronic Sorrow Who Are Caring For Children With A Chronic Medical Condition, Lori L. Batchelor Dec 2017

The Lived Experiences Of Parents With Chronic Sorrow Who Are Caring For Children With A Chronic Medical Condition, Lori L. Batchelor

Nursing Theses and Dissertations

Caring for the millions of children living with a chronic medical condition creates multiple parental burdens. Parents whose children have a diagnosis of a chronic medical condition may experience an ongoing, unresolved grief or sadness phenomenon known as chronic sorrow. This may impact parental ability to manage their child’s health care needs and may lead to negative health outcomes for the parent caregiver, affected child, and the family.

The aim of this interpretive phenomenological study was to understand the nature and meaning of the lived experiences of parents with chronic sorrow who are caring for a child with a chronic …

Sea Star Wasting Disease In Asterias Forbesi Along The Atlantic Coast Of North America, Caitlin Bucci, Madison Francoeur, Jillon Mcgreal, Roxanna Smolowitz, Vanesa Zazueta-Novoa, Gary M. Wessel, Marta Gomez-Chiarri

Fisheries, Animal and Veterinary Sciences Faculty Publications

As keystone species, sea stars serve to maintain biodiversity and species distribution through trophic level interactions in marine ecosystems. Recently, Sea Star Wasting Disease (SSWD) has caused widespread mass mortality in several sea star species from the Pacific Coast of the United States of America (USA) and Asterias forbesi on the Atlantic Coast. A densovirus, named Sea Star associated Densovirus (SSaDV), has been associated with the wasting disease in Pacific Coast sea stars, and limited samples of A. forbesi. The goal of this research is to examine the pathogenesis of SSWD in A. forbesi on the Atlantic …

This seventh year principal, also the researcher-participant in this study, had the responsibility of overseeing approximately 100 professional and support staff members and approximately 750 students ranging from pre-kindergarten to the eighth grade. The pre-k to …

Oxygen Isotopic Composition Of Nitrate Produced By Freshwater Nitrification, Danielle Boshers Dec 2017

Oxygen Isotopic Composition Of Nitrate Produced By Freshwater Nitrification, Danielle Boshers

Master's Theses

Identifying sources of nitrate (NO3-) in the environment is important to elucidate causes of water quality impairment and eutrophication. Measurements of naturally occurring stable isotope ratios of nitrogen (15N/14N) and oxygen (18O/16O) in NO3-, can be used to determine the sources, dispersal, and fate of natural and contaminant NO3- in aquatic environments. To this end, it is necessary to know how NO3- isotopologues are modified by biological reactions, as heavy and light isotopes have different reaction rates. One important microbial reaction that …
