Ethical Sensitivity In The Academic Setting, Rebecca Friedman Dec 2017

Ethical Sensitivity In The Academic Setting, Rebecca Friedman

NERA Conference Proceedings 2017

Character education programming is gaining popularity in America’s schools as one possible way to raise an intelligent and caring generation of students. However, many schools fail to allocate time, money, and resources to such initiatives. The present study examined the impact of an ethical sensitivity intervention in a religiously affiliated independent school. A self-report Likert scale and analytic rubric were used to measure development of different sub-skills of ethical sensitivity in fourth and fifth grade students (N = 25) before and after the intervention over a two-month period. Results suggest that degree of ethical sensitivity increased over the course of …

Volumetric Rotational Control, Michael Alger Dec 2017

Volumetric Rotational Control, Michael Alger

Defensive Publications Series

Techniques are described that utilize a volumetric rotational control that can be activated and controlled in an intuitive manner using natural movements. To use the volumetric rotational control, the user operates a virtual reality (VR) controller to virtually touch a VR object that represents a selectable control that includes a collider. A collider is a physics object that can be added to a virtual object to give the virtual object “physical” properties and cause the virtual object to be subject to the “physics” of the VR environment. The user activates the volumetric rotational control by causing the VR controller to …

Cyclical Data Presentation With A Helical Display, Michael Alger Dec 2017

Cyclical Data Presentation With A Helical Display, Michael Alger

Defensive Publications Series

Techniques are described that enable cyclical data presentation with a helical display. A helix, which is a particular form of a spiral, is generally not used for conventional data presentations because it can be difficult to understand in two-dimensional (2D) presentations. In a three-dimensional (3D) presentation, however, such as in a VR environment, helices, curls, and spirals are well-known forms and can be used for data presentation. In particular, cyclical information can be presented in embedded helices in which the helical shape is used to display cycles within cycles continuing in one or more directions. For example, a 3D helical …

Adjustable Conical Laser, Michael Alger

Defensive Publications Series

Techniques are described that enable a virtual laser pointer with an adjustable conical laser. The adjustable conical laser includes a main ray, like a conventional virtual laser pointer, but also provides a conical laser that expands the user’s target area. When the user misses the intended target with the main ray, the VR system can use the cone to determine the likely target. If the cone intersects a single object, the VR system selects that object. If the cone does not intersect any objects, the VR system can expand the cone and determine if any objects intersect the expanded cone. …

Text Field With Volumetric Input, Michael Alger Dec 2017

Text Field With Volumetric Input, Michael Alger

Defensive Publications Series

Techniques are described that utilize a text field with volumetric input that can accept text or a virtual reality (VR) object that represents text. To use the text field with volumetric input, the user selects a virtual object that represents the environment that the user wants to be immersed in and puts the virtual object in the text field. For example, the user may speak, gesture, or use a controller (e.g., a VR controller such as a laser pointer) to select a virtual object that represents a game.

The Evolution Of The Krüppel-Like Factor Gene Family And Their Function During Embryonic Development In The Ctenophore Mnemiopsis Leidyi, Jason Scott Presnell Dec 2017

The Evolution Of The Krüppel-Like Factor Gene Family And Their Function During Embryonic Development In The Ctenophore Mnemiopsis Leidyi, Jason Scott Presnell

Open Access Dissertations

How modifications during development influence large-scale evolutionary changes is a major emphasis in the field of evolutionary developmental biology (evo-devo). Comparing the underlying cellular and molecular basis of development in diverse organisms can provide insight into how alterations of these processes contribute to morphological diversity. Ctenophores, or comb jellies, are a phylum of marine invertebrates and, due to their unique phylogenetic position as one of the earliest branching lineages of extant animals, are an ideal system for investigating the origin and evolution of metazoan character traits. For example, the animal through-gut is thought to have originated in the metazoan stem …

Speech Codes Theory, Tabitha Hart

Faculty Publications

Rooted in the ethnography of communication and based on empirical research, speech codes theory is a theoretical/methodological tool for studying situated communication practices. Two important applications of speech codes theory are to reveal local cultures and to examine the ways in which people make use of communication to accomplish important goals pertaining to communal life. Speech codes theory offers researchers a systematic approach to describing, interpreting, analyzing, and comparing local communicative practices and the cultures which they instantiate.

The Behavioural Response Of Migrating Humpback Whales To A Full Seismic Airgun Array, Rebecca A. Dunlop, Michael J. Noad, Robert D. Mccauley, Eric Kniest, Robert Slade, David Paton, Douglas H. Cato

Anthropogenics and Population Decline Collection

Despite concerns on the effects of noise from seismic survey airguns on marine organisms, there remains uncertainty as to the biological significance of any response. This study quantifies and interprets the response of migrating humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) to a 3130 in3 (51.3l) commercial airgun array. We compare the behavioural responses to active trials (array operational; n = 34 whale groups), with responses to control trials (source vessel towing the array while silent; n = 33) and baseline studies of normal behaviour in the absence of the vessel (n = 85). No abnormal behaviours were recorded …

Decisions, Decisions, Bonnie Jean Feldkamp Dec 2017

Decisions, Decisions, Bonnie Jean Feldkamp

Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop Blog

On our drive to school, my daughter and I listened to a celebrity interview on the radio. In it, the men discussed that they eat the same three meals each day to eliminate three decisions they'd otherwise have to make. The objective was to quiet their growling tummies so they could get back to work, not obsess over food choices.

How Primary Care Can Contribute To Good Mental Health In Adults, Kurt C. Stange Dec 2017

How Primary Care Can Contribute To Good Mental Health In Adults, Kurt C. Stange

Faculty Scholarship

The need for support for good mental health is enormous. General support for good mental health is needed for 100% of the population, and at all stages of life, from early childhood to end of life. Focused support is needed for the 17.6% of adults who have a mental disorder at any time, including those who also have a mental health problem amongst the 30% who report having a long-term condition of some kind. All sectors of society and all parts of the NHS need to play their part. Primary care cannot do this on its own. This paper describes …

Obesity And Diabetes: Evaluating The Impact Of Promotores As A Prevention And Intervention Strategy In The Latino Community, Jessica Castaneda

Master's Projects and Capstones

This paper aims to examine obesity and diabetes among the Latino population as a health problem. As the largest minority racial group in the U.S, Latino rates of obesity and diabetes are greatly higher than whites. The prevalence of obesity in Latinos is 45% compared to that of whites at 34.5% (CDC, 2015). The disproportionate rates at which Latinos are affected by obesity and diabetes have prompted numerous programs to combat this health problem. Promotores or Latino community health workers have been able to provide the important piece of culturally and linguistically appropriate education for the population. Evidence shows Promotores …

Strengthening The M&E System Of Peace Corps Colombia, Samuel Burke

Capstone Collection

In 1961, when the Peace Corps was established, Colombia was the first country chosen to receive volunteers. The program ran for 20 years, with volunteers working all over the country in various sectors. Then in 1981, due to the increasing violence from the guerilla civil war, the US government decided to withdraw the volunteers and suspend the Colombia program. After a 29-year hiatus, at the request of the Colombian government, the Peace Corps was invited back to Colombia in 2010.

The Peace Corps Colombia post currently has two programs, Practical English for Success (PES), established first; and, Community Economic Development …
