Salmon Pluralities: The Politics Of Commercial Fishing On The Hoopa Valley Reservation, Lori D. Biondini Jan 2017

Salmon Pluralities: The Politics Of Commercial Fishing On The Hoopa Valley Reservation, Lori D. Biondini

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

From 2008 to 2010 members of the Hoopa Valley Tribe harvested large quantities of salmon from the Trinity River within the boundaries of the Hoopa Valley Reservation, and sold them to an off-reservation buyer. Other tribal members questioned the legality of the sellers’ actions, as well as the appropriateness of their fishing methods, which were interfering with non-commercial fishing on the river. In response, the Hoopa Valley Tribe’s governing council created a commission charged with developing commercial fishing regulations with input from the tribal membership. In early 2011, the commission invited me to participate in planning and facilitating two public …

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Contributing to recent research into settler colonialism, this paper takes an on the ground look at how this system manifests today. This research turns its lens on the white settler, unmasks settler myths of innocence and contributes to an understanding of how whiteness and white supremacism shape settler colonialism in what is now called the United Sates. This is a placed based study, focusing on the Klamath and Salmon Rivers. Consequences and complexities of the “back to the land” movement are looked at, and the question of “back-to-whose-land?” is asked? A convivial research approach, which is a back and forth …

Voices Erased From The Environmental Discourse: Understanding Campesin@S Realities And Identities Through Narratives And Forms Of Resistances, Natalie M. Cardoso

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

In a society where it seems ever more important for people to define their identity based on their personal story while seeking approval and validity, many campesin@s’[farmworkers] identities are not being treated as such. Campesin@s’ narratives and their identity are trivialized due to the environmental movement, the food movement, and society at large. Furthermore, the lack of inclusivity and representation of campesin@s continue to be reinforced in the environmental discourse. This research centers on personal narrative to understand what makes a campesin@’s identity, how personal narratives play a critical role in empowering campesin@s, and the knowledge campesin@s can …

A Feminist Interpretation Of Women's Work With Koloa In The Tongan Community, Mele'ana K. 'Akolo

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

The San Francisco Bay Area is home to a Tongan community where the Tongan culture has been established. A major factor establishing Tongan culture is women’s work with koloa. Koloa are cultural materials used to fulfill customs and traditions specific to Tongan culture, which are under the control of women where they produce, possess, gift, as well as exchange koloa. Historically, women have governed the koloa tradition as guardians preserving their tradition. My thesis exploration focused on three main subjects—women, koloa, and feminism. The point of studying women from a feminist native perspective was to explore their …

Examining Veiled Muslim Women's Experiences In Educational Institutions In France And The United States And Decolonizing The Curriculum To Reflect Their Stories, Katherine Ruprecht

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

This thesis examines through qualitative data how the dominant narrative shapes the experiences of women in France who wear hijab and in the United States who wear hijab or niqab at educational institutions. This research focuses on what roles do cultural symbolism, colonial ideology and political propaganda play in continuing the dominant narrative in this context in both France and the United States. This study further advocates based on its findings that educational institutions must promote more cross-cultural dialog and a larger representation of accurate depictions of Muslim women. This research states that this can be achieved through “decolonizing” the …

“I Exist To Resist”: Navigating The Gender Non-Conforming Identity At Humboldt State University, Lizbeth E. Olmedo Jan 2017

“I Exist To Resist”: Navigating The Gender Non-Conforming Identity At Humboldt State University, Lizbeth E. Olmedo

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

While transgender research is educating and reforming schools, politics and wider society, there is little work on a gender spectrum that disrupts the gender binary of (trans) men/women. This research is an attempt to fill in the gaps of people, significantly students who do not fit under the “transgender umbrella,” as this term has tended to clump an array of gender and sexual identities together. This qualitative research explores students who go beyond the gender binary and how they navigate non-binary, genderqueer, and gender non-conforming identities within Humboldt State University (HSU). With this present qualitative study, I examined the lived …

Efl Teaching And Teacher Training In Nicaragua: A Master's International Experience, Deva Richards Jan 2017

Efl Teaching And Teacher Training In Nicaragua: A Master's International Experience, Deva Richards

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

English as a foreign language (EFL) is a mandatory part of public education in Nicaragua, Central America. Many Nicaraguan EFL teachers, however, lack the English and teaching skills to be able to do their job effectively. Furthermore, teacher training and professional development opportunities for EFL teachers in Nicaragua are often inaccessible and/or of low quality. As a Master’s International Program student, I studied Teaching English as a Second Language/Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TESL/TEFL) and served in the Peace Corps in Nicaragua, where I sought to improve EFL education. This M.A. Project tells the story of my Master’s International …

Factors Affecting Virtual Gift Acceptance: Mediating Roles Of Hedonic And Utilitarian Values, Eric M. Tamandja, Assion Lawson-Body, Laurence Lawson-Body, Jun Liu

Research & Publications

There is little formalized knowledge of virtual gifting in the information technology (IT) literature. The objective of this paper is to explore the factors affecting the acceptance of virtual gifts and specifically the factors within a virtual gift that affect individuals’ intention to accept it and the mediating role of these factors. This research combines several acceptances, hedonic and utilitarian view related theories to explore the factors affecting acceptance of virtual gifts. Moreover, this study investigates the effects of usefulness, beautifulness, subjective norms of the receiver, and importance of the giver of a virtual gift as determinants of its utilitarian …

American Nationalism And The “Curse Of Rurality”: Urban-Rural Differences And The Notion Of National Belonging, Milos Djeric Jan 2017

American Nationalism And The “Curse Of Rurality”: Urban-Rural Differences And The Notion Of National Belonging, Milos Djeric

Research Papers

Relationship between nationalism and urban or rural environment is not one that is often studied, apart from traditional historical interpretation of it being a modern, urban phenomenon, characterized by imagery and discourse of rurality. Yet it seems that, in the last several decades, not only have nationalist conflicts mostly been rooted within the countryside and nationalist agendas won on elections in them, but that there is a more fundamental connection between nationalism and rurality. While briefly addressing this issue, this paper focuses on the analysis of 2014 GSS data, exploring the relationship between the place of living and the notion …

Multilevel And Multisectoral Processes Of Implementing Nutritionsensitive Ideology And Programming In Ethiopia’S Development Landscape, Andrea Marie Warren Jan 2017

Multilevel And Multisectoral Processes Of Implementing Nutritionsensitive Ideology And Programming In Ethiopia’S Development Landscape, Andrea Marie Warren

Theses and Dissertations

This research sought to understand the ways in which ideas and discourses in international development are adapted in a country context. Our particular focus was on how ideas at the international and national level become reality at the subnational and community levels. We primarily examined the sensitization of Ethiopia’s Productive Safety Net Program to nutrition across sectors and down levels of government as a way to understand how the global momentum around nutrition, particularly multisectoral or nutrition-sensitive initiatives, can be translated into action.

The first manuscript delves further into the operational realities of implementing multisectoral nutrition-sensitive programming among the neglected …

El Lugar De La Memoria, Entre La Verdad Y La Emoción: Re-Lectura Del Exilio Español De 1939, Jinmei Chen

Theses and Dissertations

Drawing on the testimonial character of the memory of Spanish exile of 1939, this project contributes to the study of cultural memory, in dialogue with other scholars who examine memory in contemporary works. It focuses on the intersection of exile and memory, and demonstrates that cultural memory means a connection between collective and individual memories. The three primary works examined in this project are conceived before, during and after each author’s exile respectively, thus, they together give a comprehensive view of the massive exile of 1939: Ramón J. Sender’s El lugar de un hombre (1939), Eulalio Ferrer Rodríguez’s Entre alambradas: …

Adolescents' Self-Described Transformations And Their Alignment With Transformative Learning Theory, Katie Titus Larson Jan 2017

Adolescents' Self-Described Transformations And Their Alignment With Transformative Learning Theory, Katie Titus Larson

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

This phenomenological, collaborative inquiry explored the depth of two adolescent girls’ lived experiences during their high school years and the degree to which their self-described transformative incidents aligned with transformative learning theory.Traditionally this theory has been reserved for adults, yet the current paradigm may have overlooked the capabilities of modern adolescents to not only experience, but to describe and interpret transformative learning in ways both similar to and unique from adults. My two 19-year-old co-researchers and I examined four years of their self-identified transformative incidents by breaking them into components, analyzing the language within, and seeking evidence of critical self-reflection throughout; …

Aldo Rossi: The City As The Locus Of Collective Memory And The Making Of The Public City In Cold War Italy, Sonia Melani Miller Jan 2017

Aldo Rossi: The City As The Locus Of Collective Memory And The Making Of The Public City In Cold War Italy, Sonia Melani Miller

Master's Theses

This paper seeks to redefine the scholarship on Aldo Rossi (1931-1997), an Italian architect known for having reintroduced symbolism to European architecture after the 1960s. My thesis addresses questions surrounding the development of Rossi’s theory of city morphology, proposing that it was rooted in antifascist sentiments and influenced by politics of the Cold War. Rossi’s professional growth is outlined through a period conditioned by the reactionary ideologies of postwar Europe, which deeply influenced the nation’s culture and shaped artistic production. This thesis relies on unpublished archival material from Rossi’s early career that documents the leading political and philosophical ideas of …

Green Vs. White: An Examination Of Of Media Portrayals Of Radical Environmentalists And White Supremacists, Laurence Pedroni Jan 2017

Green Vs. White: An Examination Of Of Media Portrayals Of Radical Environmentalists And White Supremacists, Laurence Pedroni

Master's Theses

The rise of the Trump presidency has highlighted not only the white supremacist history of the U.S., but also reflects danger to the survival of the species in the form of wholesale climate change denial. These ideologies are not unique to Trump or his cabinet, instead reflecting long standing U.S. policy. This research seeks to examine how the U.S. media supports and propagates propaganda to support these hegemonic goals. Relevant literature and research seem to suggest that because radical environmental movements often challenge the hegemony of capital accumulation, they might be portrayed as more violent and a greater terrorist threat …

Cognitive Performance Across The Life Course Of Bolivian Forager-Farmers With Limited Schooling, Michael Gurven, Eric Fuerstenberg, Benjamin C. Trumble, Jonathan Stieglitz, Bret Beheim, Helen Davis, Hillard Kaplan Jan 2017

Cognitive Performance Across The Life Course Of Bolivian Forager-Farmers With Limited Schooling, Michael Gurven, Eric Fuerstenberg, Benjamin C. Trumble, Jonathan Stieglitz, Bret Beheim, Helen Davis, Hillard Kaplan

ESI Publications

Cognitive performance is characterized by at least two distinct life course trajectories. Many cognitive abilities (e.g. “effortful processing” abilities including fluid reasoning, and processing speed) improve throughout early adolescence and start declining in early adulthood, while other abilities (e.g. “crystallized” abilities like vocabulary breadth) improve throughout adult life, remaining robust even at late ages. Although schooling may impact performance and cognitive “reserve”, it has been argued that these age patterns of cognitive performance are human universals. Here we examine age patterns of cognitive performance among Tsimane forager-horticulturalists of Bolivia, and test whether schooling is related to differences in cognitive performance …

Unprecented But Unfulfilled: Refugee Protection And Regional Responses To The Andaman 'Crisis', Madeline Gleeson Jan 2017

Unprecented But Unfulfilled: Refugee Protection And Regional Responses To The Andaman 'Crisis', Madeline Gleeson

Antropologi Indonesia

In May 2015, a situation unfolding in the Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea – since dubbed the Andaman Sea ‘crisis’ – threw into sharp relief the limitations of the region’s willingness and capacity to respond to large scale movements of refugees and irregular migrants. More than 5,000 Rohingya refugees and Bangladeshi migrants became stranded at sea, after people smugglers abandoned their boats and nearby countries refused to let them land. Ultimately it fell to a handful of the most affected countries in the region – Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand in particular – to take the lead in initiating a …

What Does It Mean To Be Well? Understanding The Acehnese Youth Refugees' Resettlement Experience, Fairuziana Humam, Traci L. Weinstein, Holly L. Angelique

Antropologi Indonesia

This qualitative study describes the extent to which there is a perception of wellbeing among Acehnese refugees who arrived as adolescents to the United States and settled in the Mid - Atlantic States. Aceh is a province in Northwestern Indonesia consisting of approximately four million people. During 1990 to 2005, approximately 20,000 people left the province due to political conflict to seek asylum in Malaysia, their neighboring country, before resettling in a third country. The participants in this research study are Acehnese refugees that were resettled to the United States as adolescents during that peak migration phase. Results describe how …

After The Boats Stopped: Refugees Managing A Life Of Protracted Limbo In Indonesia, Thomas Brown Jan 2017

After The Boats Stopped: Refugees Managing A Life Of Protracted Limbo In Indonesia, Thomas Brown

Antropologi Indonesia

In 2013, Australia enacted tough border policies to “stop the boats”, leaving Indonesia to play host to a burgeoning number of refugees who now spend years, rather than months in the country, awaiting resettlement through the UNHCR to a third country. In Indonesia, asylum seekers live in a state of limbo and are deprived of access to education and employment. Given the uncertainty and increasing length of stay, the question emerges: how do people manage their lives in response to this protracted, yet impermanent, situation? In particular, how do refugees build relations with one another and with their Indonesian hosts? …

"Kekerasan Itu Katarsis Dari Patriarki!": Resistensi Pada Kekerasan Terhadap Perempuan Dalam Praktik Gerakan Sosial Aliansi Laki-Laki Baru, Febi Rizki Ramadhan

Antropologi Indonesia

This research examines a movement of men’s participation towards the elimination of violence against women in Indonesia known as, Aliansi Laki-laki Baru (later refer as ALB). Using an ethnographic method, this research shows that ALB –as a social movement– could not be understood as a homogeneous and monolithic entity because of its diverse meanings of violence against women that are perceived by the participants. Furthermore, this research addresses the discourse productions as an act of resistance towards patriarchy and hegemonic masculinity. In this paper, I argue, patriarchy and hegemonic masculinity as the ideology of violence against women that are embodied …

Lubang Buaya, Kuburan Para Pahlawan: Abjeksi Dalam Historiografi Peristiwa 1 Oktober 1965, Muhammad Damm

Antropologi Indonesia

Not only explanations about 30th September Movement (G30S) on 1st October 1965 debatable, the following mass murder during late 1965 to 1966 is still far from any clearance either. How that mass murder possible? We may say, following Roosa’s argument, that that mass murder possible because of preceding pretext, that is G30S/PKI. We may also say, following Drakeley’s argument, that that mass murder possible because of current socio-political atmosphere at that time was conducive for its emergence. Nevertheless, both arguments are sufficient to explain how 1965–1966 mass murder possible if only complemented by explanation about “mental mechanism” that worked behind …

Valuing Sacred Tribal Waters Within Prior Appropriation, Michelle Bryan Jan 2017

Valuing Sacred Tribal Waters Within Prior Appropriation, Michelle Bryan

Faculty Law Review Articles

Throughout the world water plays a central role in the spirituality of indigenous peoples. Focusing on the American West, this article first describes how tribal water needs touch upon the sacred and then explains how both federal law and state prior appropriation doctrine fail to adequately protect these important sacred views of water. Pivoting away from the classic federal law arguments, the article then advocates for an evolution in state water law regimes to provide yet unrecognized protections for tribal sacred waters. Because international law plays an increasing role in this issue, the article also explores case studies from Ireland, …
