Doctoral Program Quality Through The Lens Of The Carnegie-Based Program Review, Magnolia Hernandez Jan 2017

Doctoral Program Quality Through The Lens Of The Carnegie-Based Program Review, Magnolia Hernandez

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

High attrition and time-to-degree rates have dominated the national dialogue on Ph.D. completion in recent decades, raising concerns among stakeholders at all levels who see the direct relationship that exists between doctoral Education and the nations research competitiveness. Graduate schools have approached the challenges faced in doctoral Education in different ways, one of which includes engaging doctoral programs in program review processes to assess and improve the programs quality and effectiveness. The purpose of this study was to examine stakeholder observations and perceptions of the impact of the Carnegie-based program review model on doctoral program quality and effectiveness. The study …

H+- And Na+- Elicited Rapid Changes Of The Microtubule Cytoskeleton In The Biflagellated Green Alga Chlamydomonas, Yi Liu, Mike Visetsouk, Michelle Mynlieff, Hongmin Qin, Karl F. Lechtreck, Pinfen Yang Jan 2017

H+- And Na+- Elicited Rapid Changes Of The Microtubule Cytoskeleton In The Biflagellated Green Alga Chlamydomonas, Yi Liu, Mike Visetsouk, Michelle Mynlieff, Hongmin Qin, Karl F. Lechtreck, Pinfen Yang

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Although microtubules are known for dynamic instability, the dynamicity is considered to be tightly controlled to support a variety of cellular processes. Yet diverse evidence suggests that this is not applicable to Chlamydomonas, a biflagellate fresh water green alga, but intense autofluorescence from photosynthesis pigments has hindered the investigation. By expressing a bright fluorescent reporter protein at the endogenous level, we demonstrate in real time discreet sweeping changes in algal microtubules elicited by rises of intracellular H+ and Na+. These results from this model organism with characteristics of animal and plant cells provide novel explanations regarding …

The Influence Of Relationship Beliefs On Gift Giving, Dipankar Rai, Chein-Wei (Wilson) Lin, Junghwa (Jenny) Hong, George Kulick Jan 2017

The Influence Of Relationship Beliefs On Gift Giving, Dipankar Rai, Chein-Wei (Wilson) Lin, Junghwa (Jenny) Hong, George Kulick

Marketing Faculty Publications and Presentations

People have fundamental beliefs about what constitutes a good relationship, known as implicit theories of relationship, where some people have destiny beliefs whereas others have growth beliefs. People with destiny beliefs believe that potential partners are meant either for each other or not, whereas people with growth beliefs believe that successful relationships are cultivated and developed. This research shows that different implicit theories of relationship influence consumers’ gift choice to their significant others. We demonstrate, through two studies, that consumers with destiny beliefs prefer giving gifts that are more feasible in nature, whereas consumers with growth beliefs prefer giving gifts …

Contours Of Neoliberalism In Us Empirical Educational Research, Mardi Schmeichel, Ajay Sharma, Elizabeth Pittard Jan 2017

Contours Of Neoliberalism In Us Empirical Educational Research, Mardi Schmeichel, Ajay Sharma, Elizabeth Pittard

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

Neoliberalism has an enormous influence on P–12 education in most industrial societies. In this integrative, theoretical literature review, we surveyed the journal articles on neoliberalism in US-based educational research to better understand how neoliberalism has been conceptualized in this body of work and to offer implications for future research on neoliberalism and education. We drew on Foucauldian discourse theories to conduct an analysis of peer-reviewed studies of American P–12 contexts to consider how researchers’ depictions of neoliberalism have shaped the discourse of neoliberalism in education and contributed to particular ways of thinking and responding to neoliberalism in the United States. …

Object Based Workshops At The University Of Pennsylvania Museum Of Archaeology And Anthropology, Katherine Margaret Peden Jan 2017

Object Based Workshops At The University Of Pennsylvania Museum Of Archaeology And Anthropology, Katherine Margaret Peden

Master of Humanities Capstone Projects

The University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology is a world-renowned institution, located on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania. The museum was founded in 1887, under the university’s Provost Dr. William Pepper. Dr. Pepper convinced the university’s board of trustees to create a building to house the university’s artifacts, especially those from the impending archaeological expedition to the ancient site of Nippur. Staff would no longer shuffle the artifacts between the library and different buildings, but keep the artifacts in their own separate home, the museum. The Penn Museum is the largest university museum in the county, …

Przedsiębiorczość W Teorii I Badaniach. Perspektywa Młodych Badaczy, Agnieszka Postuła, Marcin Darecki

Monografie/Monographs

Parental Understandings Of The Meaning Of Autism Spectrum Disorder (Asd), Kylara Leyva Jan 2017

Parental Understandings Of The Meaning Of Autism Spectrum Disorder (Asd), Kylara Leyva

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

This study examines how parents understand autism, their child's behavior and development. Parents can understand their child's behavior and development through a medical model perspective, which sees the childâ??s autism as a series of deficits and deviations. However, a growing number of parents understand their child's behavior and development through a neurodiversity perspective, where a child is seen as having differences in behavior, instead of deficits. Parents' understandings of autism can influence how they see their child's behavior and development and be a driver for seeking diagnosis. In-depth interviews were conducted with parents of children with autism to probe for …

Since the 2009 founding of the Interdisciplinary Research and Informatics Scholarship Center (or IRIS), a digital humanities and social sciences center at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, faculty, librarians, and undergraduates have been collaborating to reinvigorate humanities curriculum both within and beyond the classroom.1 The IRIS Center has become a site where faculty and librarians work together to find solutions to budget shortfalls and changing definitions of higher education. This chapter will discuss the theory, practice, and outcomes underlying one approach to undergraduate research at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE). This case study will include a discussion of the intersection of …

Instructional Design: Toolkits For Paraprofessional Staff And Graduate Assistants, Lora Del Rio Jan 2017

Instructional Design: Toolkits For Paraprofessional Staff And Graduate Assistants, Lora Del Rio

SIUE Faculty Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

After attending the 2012 ACRL Immersion Teacher Track Program in Burlington, Vermont, I had a greater understanding of how and why careful planning relates directly to student engagement and learning. Perhaps not quite as obvious is how instructional design (ID) corresponds to the confidence of an instructor. In order to meet the demands of our library instruction program, we rely on graduate teaching assistants and library paraprofessionals to teach the one-shot sessions requested by teaching faculty. However, these employees do not always come with teaching experience and they come from outside the library science discipline, so information literacy is many …

Never Enough: Animal Hoarding Law, Courtney G. Lee Jan 2017

Never Enough: Animal Hoarding Law, Courtney G. Lee

McGeorge School of Law Scholarly Articles

Animal hoarding, a disorder that causes sufferers to acquire animals compulsively despite the inability or unwillingness to provide them with adequate care, is a widespread, costly, often underestimated problem that causes more animal suffering than all acts of intentional cruelty combined. Not only are animals harmed, but humans are as well, from dependents that live with hoarders to members of the surrounding communities to the hoarders themselves. Current laws do not address the issue effectively, and recidivism rates are close to 100%. This Article seeks to increase awareness of the animal hoarding problem and offers suggestions as to how the …

Loneliness And Student Health: Replication And Exploratory Analysis, John Copeland Jan 2017

Loneliness And Student Health: Replication And Exploratory Analysis, John Copeland

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Loneliness occurs in the absence of belonging or social connectedness and has been linked to many physical and mental health problems. Among these conditions are depression, anxiety, sleep disturbance, and stress. College students report these four conditions as the largest barriers to good academic performance. For as much is known about loneliness, much less is known about belonging and health or the role loneliness plays in these relationships prompting a need for investigation. Using a sample of 301 university students, we replicated previous findings that loneliness predicts depression, anxiety, sleep disturbance, and stress. Next we replicated and contributed new findings …

Diverse Experiences And Complex Identities: A Resource Archive Of Artists’ And Educators’ Works, Vivian Maria Poey, Berta Rosa Berriz, Amanda Claudia Wager

Journal of Pedagogy, Pluralism, and Practice

This concluding article builds on the ideas developed throughout this special issue by providing a wide range of resources to enrich arts-based work within the field of literacy development with families and communities of emergent bilinguals. We include a bank of resources that may serve as the beginning of an archive. Coming from three different fields, with varying professional experiences, the sources we find helpful intersect and diverge. To honor this range of possibilities, we have taken an expansive approach that includes poets, visual and performing artists, arts and cultural organizations, literary associations, language learning standards and anti-bias and critical …

Introduction To Art As Voice: Creating Access For Emergent Bilingual Learners, Amanda Claudia Wager, Vivian Maria Poey, Berta Rosa Berriz

Journal of Pedagogy, Pluralism, and Practice

In this introductory chapter, we begin by introducing ourselves, so that you immediately know our positionalities—who we are and the lens we see the world through—and in the hope to provide you with knowledge of why this special issue is so close to our hearts. We then share current demographic information regarding emergent bilingual learners to further explain the importance of this work today. In the current political context, the topic of displaced populations, immigration policies (such as The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals [DACA]), refugees, as well as those who are undocumented is very alive in classrooms and relevant …

National and international public–private partnerships, consortia, and government initiatives are underway to collect and share genomic, personal, and healthcare data on a massive scale. Ideally, these efforts will contribute to the creation of a medical information commons (MIC), a comprehensive data resource that is widely available for both research and clinical uses. Stakeholder participation is essential in clarifying goals, deepening understanding of areas of complexity, and addressing long-standing policy concerns such as privacy and security and data ownership. This article describes eight core principles proposed by a diverse group of expert stakeholders to guide the formation of a successful, sustainable …

Neonatal Shoulder Width Suggests A Semirotational, Oblique Birth Mechanism In Australopithecus Afarensis, Jeremy M. Desilva, Natalie M. Laudicina, Karen R. Rosenberg, Wenda R. Trevathan Jan 2017

Neonatal Shoulder Width Suggests A Semirotational, Oblique Birth Mechanism In Australopithecus Afarensis, Jeremy M. Desilva, Natalie M. Laudicina, Karen R. Rosenberg, Wenda R. Trevathan

Peer Reviewed Articles

Birth mechanics in early hominins are often reconstructed based on cephalopelvic proportions, with little attention paid to neonatal shoulders. Here, we find that neonatal biacromial breadth can be estimated from adult clavicular length (R2 = 0.80) in primates. Using this relationship and clavicular length from adult Australopithecus afarensis, we estimate biacromial breadth in neonatal australopiths. Combined with neonatal head dimensions, we reconstruct birth in A. afarensis (A.L. 288-1 or Lucy) and find that the most likely mechanism of birth in this early hominin was a semi-rotational oblique birth in which the head engaged and passed through the inlet …

Exploring Impacts Of Administrative Discretion On Human Trafficking Victims, Brittany Gray Jan 2017

Exploring Impacts Of Administrative Discretion On Human Trafficking Victims, Brittany Gray

SPNHA Review

In a world where succeeding in one’s occupation is dependent upon following policies and fulfilling obligations, human rights and ethics may fall secondary. As a result, policy and institutionalized processes and behaviors have the potential to overlook and infringe upon the rights of human trafficking victims. By exploring fictional stories of a human trafficking victim and law enforcement, this paper examines how flawed policy and cultural perspectives can negatively influence administrative discretion. To illustrate how street level bureaucracy may further harm victims of human trafficking, the narratives compare how treatment of individuals may vary based on the perception of them …

A Natural History Of The Drag Queen Phenomenon, Michael Moncrieff, Pierre Lienard Jan 2017

A Natural History Of The Drag Queen Phenomenon, Michael Moncrieff, Pierre Lienard

Anthropology Faculty Research

The drag queen cultural phenomenon has been described at length. However, the depiction of outlandish and hyperbolic womanhood and taunting and formidable behavior at the core of drag queens' public persona has still to be fully accounted for. We argue that these aspects of the drag queen's public appearance could best be understood in a signaling framework. Publicly donning extravagant woman's costumes attracts harassment and brings financial, mating, and opportunity costs, generating the conditions for the transmission of honest signals. By successfully withstanding those odds, drag queen impersonators signal strategic qualities to members of the gay community. Data collected among …

Fashion And Court-Building In The Sixteenth-Century Florentine Ducal Court: Politics, Agency, And Paleopathology In The Wardrobes Of Eleonora Di Toledo And Giovanna D'Austria, Leah Rachel Jeffers Jan 2017

Fashion And Court-Building In The Sixteenth-Century Florentine Ducal Court: Politics, Agency, And Paleopathology In The Wardrobes Of Eleonora Di Toledo And Giovanna D'Austria, Leah Rachel Jeffers

Scripps Senior Theses

Fashion in the Renaissance became intensely political, highly gendered, and anatomized (i.e. emphasizing human anatomy rather than masking it). Court culture placed a particular emphasis on the body of the courtier, as skills such as dancing and dressing fashionably became crucial to political success in states throughout Europe. In sixteenth-century Florence, the Medici attempted to install a duchy in what was at the time a republican city (with strong republican heritage). Florentine fears of foreign domination and resentment towards non-republican forms of government made the Medici’s task nearly impossible. Fashion became a primary pillar of the Medicean political agenda, as …

On Epistemology Of Missiological Research, Petr Činčala Jan 2017

On Epistemology Of Missiological Research, Petr Činčala

Journal of Adventist Mission Studies

"In this article I addressed the nature of missiology and missiological research. Missiology is like a dynamic river that can “flow” with any academic discipline examining human behavior “to expand missiological theory and applications and to extend the mission Dei” (Elliston 2011:112). Theological research as a stand-alone research method may or may not serve missiological purposes; however, missiology and theology are related disciplines. This same rational does not apply to the social sciences and missiology. Missiology can benefit enormously from a social science approach to research but may be paralyzed by utilizing social science research as a whole package."

Proposed Research Instrument For Establishing A Baseline Measurement Of Buddhist Background Believers, Gregory P. Whitsett Jan 2017

Proposed Research Instrument For Establishing A Baseline Measurement Of Buddhist Background Believers, Gregory P. Whitsett

Journal of Adventist Mission Studies

"My plan for this survey is to create a self-administered questionnaire. What makes this a preferred method of research is that it can be conducted quickly using a drop-and-collect technique by national church leaders sending the survey packets to local church leaders to then distribute to willing participants. Self-administered questionnaires are relatively inexpensive and respondents are not influenced by the interviewer or her bias. Another advantage is that this type of survey allows longer batteries of questions than you could ask in person as well as giving the respondent anonymity. The disadvantages include that there is no control over how …
