Do Bilingual Speakers Shift Fundamental Frequency Based On Language Acquisition Or Language Dominance?, Nydia Abigail Mendez Jan 2017

Do Bilingual Speakers Shift Fundamental Frequency Based On Language Acquisition Or Language Dominance?, Nydia Abigail Mendez

ETD Archive

As Spanish-English bilingual speakers continue becoming a growing part of the population in the United States it is essential to investigate their acoustic measures. The purpose of this study was to investigate a possible shift in fundamental frequency (F0) measures in bilingual speakers, and it sought to determine whether that shift was based on language acquisition or language dominance. Eleven Spanish-English bilinguals were asked to complete the following tasks 1) answer the Language Experience and Proficiency Questionnaire (LEAP-Q) 2) complete 3 Spanish and 3 English category fluency trials by naming words belonging to a category (e.g. animals), each one minute …

Identity And Career Experiences Of Muslim Immigrant Women: The United States Context, Basak Kacar Khamush

ETD Archive

Muslim women's sense of self is at stake due to prevailing stigma and oppression toward Muslims. Employment and workplace have emerged as primary settings for encounters of negative bias, prejudice, and discrimination. Muslim immigrant women face multiple disadvantages on the basis of their various intersecting identities. The purpose of this study was to explore identity and career experiences of first generation immigrant Muslim women in American society, particularly in work and career settings. Informed by relational approaches to career development and social identity perspective, and grounded on the constructivist paradigm, a phenomenological qualitative analysis using consensual qualitative research (CQR) was …

Sovereign Screens, Kristin L. Dowell Jan 2017

Sovereign Screens, Kristin L. Dowell

University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters

While Indigenous media have gained increasing prominence around the world, the vibrant Aboriginal media world on the Canadian West Coast has received little scholarly attention. As the first ethnography of the Aboriginal media community in Vancouver, Sovereign Screens reveals the various social forces shaping Aboriginal media production including community media organizations and avant-garde art centers, as well as the national spaces of cultural policy and media institutions.

Kristin L. Dowell uses the concept of visual sovereignty to examine the practices, forms, and meanings through which Aboriginal filmmakers tell their individual stories and those of their Aboriginal nations and the intertribal …

Street Democracy, Sandra C. Mendiola García Jan 2017

Street Democracy, Sandra C. Mendiola García

University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters

No visitor to Mexico can fail to recognize the omnipresence of street vendors, selling products ranging from fruits and vegetables to prepared food and clothes. The vendors compose a large part of the informal economy, which altogether represents at least 30 percent of Mexico’s economically active population. Neither taxed nor monitored by the government, the informal sector is the fastest growing economic sector in the world.

In Street Democracy Sandra C. Mendiola García explores the political lives and economic significance of this otherwise overlooked population, focusing on the radical street vendors during the 1970s and 1980s in Puebla, Mexico’s fourth-largest …

Yearning To Labor, John P. Murphy Jan 2017

Yearning To Labor, John P. Murphy

University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters

In the first decade of the twenty-first century, France underwent a particularly turbulent period during which urban riots in 2005 and labor protests in 2006 galvanized people across the country and brought the question of youth unemployment among its poorer, multiethnic outer cities into the national spotlight.

Drawing on more than a year of ethnographic field research in the housing projects of the French city of Limoges, Yearning to Labor chronicles the everyday struggles of a group of young people as they confront unemployment at more than triple the national rate—and the crushing despair it engenders. Against the background of …

Governing Affect, Roberto E. Barrios Jan 2017

Governing Affect, Roberto E. Barrios

University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters

Roberto E. Barrios presents an ethnographic study of the aftermaths of four natural disasters: southern Honduras after Hurricane Mitch; New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina; Chiapas, Mexico, after the Grijalva River landslide; and southern Illinois following the Mississippi River flood. Focusing on the role of affect, Barrios examines the ways in which people who live through disasters use emotions as a means of assessing the relevance of governmentally sanctioned recovery plans, judging the effectiveness of such programs, and reflecting on the risk of living in areas that have been deemed prone to disaster. Emotions such as terror, disgust, or sentimental attachment …

Disability Studies And The Environmental Humanities, Sarah Jaquette Ray, Jay Sibara Jan 2017

Disability Studies And The Environmental Humanities, Sarah Jaquette Ray, Jay Sibara

University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters

Although scholars in the environmental humanities have been exploring the dichotomy between “wild” and “built” environments for several years, few have focused on the field of disability studies, a discipline that enlists the contingency between environments and bodies as a foundation of its scholarship. On the other hand, scholars in disability studies have demonstrated the ways in which the built environment privileges some bodies and minds over others, yet they have rarely examined the ways in which toxic environments engender chronic illness and disability or how environmental illnesses disrupt dominant paradigms for scrutinizing “disability.”

Designed as a reader for undergraduate …

The Spirit And The Sky, Mark Hollabaugh Jan 2017

The Spirit And The Sky, Mark Hollabaugh

University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters

The interest of nineteenth-century Lakotas in the sun, moon, and stars was an essential part of their never-ending quest to understand their world. The Spirit and the Sky presents a survey of the ethnoastronomy of the nineteenth-century Lakota and relates Lakota astronomy to their cultural practices and beliefs. The center of Lakota belief is the incomprehensible, extraordinary, and sacred nature of the world in which they live. The earth beneath and the stars above constitute their holistic world.

Mark Hollabaugh offers a detailed analysis of all aspects of Lakota culture that have a bearing on their astronomy, including telling time, …

Indigenous Media And Political Imaginaries In Contemporary Bolivia, Gabriela Zamorano Villarreal Jan 2017

Indigenous Media And Political Imaginaries In Contemporary Bolivia, Gabriela Zamorano Villarreal

University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters

Gabriela Zamorano Villarreal examines the political dimension of indigenous media production and distribution as a means by which indigenous organizations articulate new claims on national politics in Bolivia, a country experiencing one of the most notable cases of social mobilization and indigenous-based constitutional transformation in contemporary Latin America. Based on fieldwork in Bolivia from 2005 to 2007, Zamorano Villarreal details how grassroots indigenous media production has been instrumental to indigenous political demands for a Constituent Assembly and for implementing the new constitution within Evo Morales controversial administration.

On a day-to-day basis, Zamorano Villarreal witnessed the myriad processes by which Bolivia’s …

Salish Blankets, Leslie H. Tepper, Janice George, Willard Joseph Jan 2017

Salish Blankets, Leslie H. Tepper, Janice George, Willard Joseph

University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters

Salish Blankets presents a new perspective on Salish weaving through technical and anthropological lenses. Worn as ceremonial robes, the blankets are complex objects said to preexist in the supernatural realm and made manifest in the natural world through ancestral guidance. The blankets are protective garments that at times of great life changes—birth, marriage, death—offer emotional strength and mental focus. A blanket can help establish the owner’s standing in the community and demonstrate a weaver’s technical expertise and artistic vision. The object, the maker, the wearer, and the community are bound and transformed through the creation and use of the blanket. …

The Common Sense Of Counseling Psychology: Introducing, Lisa M. Mcandrew, Jessica L. Martin, Myrna L. Friedlander, Katherine Shaffer, Jessica Y. Breland, Sarah Slotkin, Howard Leventhal

Educational & Counseling Psychology Faculty Scholarship

The goal of therapy is typically to improve clients’ self-management of their problems, not only during the course of therapy but also after therapy ends. Although it seems obvious that therapists are interested in improving client’s self-management, the psychotherapy literature has little to say on the topic. This article introduces Leventhal’s Common-Sense Model of Self-Regulation, a theoretical model of the self-management of health, and applies the model to the therapeutic process. The Common-Sense Model proposes that people develop illness representations of health threats and these illness representations guide self-management. The model has primarily been used to understand how people self-manage …

A Polyvalent Mediterranean, Or The Trope Of Nomadism In The Literary Oeuvre Of Igiaba Scego And Abdourahman A. Waberi, Alessandra Benedicty-Kokken Jan 2017

A Polyvalent Mediterranean, Or The Trope Of Nomadism In The Literary Oeuvre Of Igiaba Scego And Abdourahman A. Waberi, Alessandra Benedicty-Kokken

Publications and Research

I argue that novelists Igiaba Scego and Abdourahman A. Waberi, building on the work of Nuruddin Farah among others, engage the trope of nomadism so as to propose a pre-colonial imaginary of a Somali polyvalent cosmopolitanism as a possible tool for thinking through our contemporary geographies of Africa, Europe, and the Middle East.

Issues In The Conceptualization Of Intercultural Communication Competence, Guo-Ming Chen Jan 2017

Issues In The Conceptualization Of Intercultural Communication Competence, Guo-Ming Chen

Communication Studies Faculty Publications

Scholars from different disciplines have produced a large amount of studies on the concept of intercultural communication competence (ICC) since its beginning a half century ago. While agreement on the basic nature of ICC has been reached among scholars, more new problems regarding the conceptualization, operationalization, and application of the concept continue to arise because of the impact of technological development and globalization trend. This chapter attempts to address these problems by focusing on the conceptual issues for the study of ICC. Six conceptual issues in the study of ICC are examined: 1. the meaning of ICC, 2. trait vs. …

Inscribed Administrative Material Culture And The Development Of The Umayyad State In Syria-Palestine 661-750 Ce, Tareq Ramadan

Wayne State University Dissertations

The seventh century CE in the Near East was a period characterized by major political transition and cultural change, representing an era that witnessed the decline of the region’s long-standing major political institutions alongside the emergence of a powerful Arab Caliphate that supplanted both the offices of the Byzantine Emperor and the Persian, Sasanid Shah in most or all of the region. This Arab Caliphate, first based out of the Hejaz, then out of Syria-Palestine with the rise of the Umayyads (r. 661-750 CE), Islam’s first hereditary dynasty, embarked on a successful campaign of Arab and Muslim hegemony across three …

Colorism Bias In Hiring Decisions: Disentangling The Effects Of Hair Type And Skin Tone, Niambi Maia Childress Powell Jan 2017

Colorism Bias In Hiring Decisions: Disentangling The Effects Of Hair Type And Skin Tone, Niambi Maia Childress Powell

Wayne State University Dissertations

Studies on colorism bias are prevalent, but there exists a gap in the literature regarding how this construct operates within organizational contexts (Marira & Mitra, 2013). The current research explores colorism bias in organizational hiring decisions, considering both hair type and skin tone as physical markers which influence the enactment of colorism biases; as well as investigating the mediating effect of racial identity strength and attractiveness of the applicant, and moderating effects of job type. In a quasi-experimental design, participants viewed a Black female job applicant being considered for either a blue or white collar job, with varying degrees of …

Evolving Clustering Algorithms And Their Application For Condition Monitoring, Diagnostics, & Prognostics, Fling Finn Tseng Jan 2017

Evolving Clustering Algorithms And Their Application For Condition Monitoring, Diagnostics, & Prognostics, Fling Finn Tseng

Wayne State University Dissertations

Applications of Condition-Based Maintenance (CBM) technology requires effective yet generic data driven methods capable of carrying out diagnostics and prognostics tasks without detailed domain knowledge and human intervention. Improved system availability, operational safety, and enhanced logistics and supply chain performance could be achieved, with the widespread deployment of CBM, at a lower cost level. This dissertation focuses on the development of a Mutual Information based Recursive Gustafson-Kessel-Like (MIRGKL) clustering algorithm which operates recursively to identify underlying model structure and parameters from stream type data. Inspired by the Evolving Gustafson-Kessel-like Clustering (eGKL) algorithm, we applied the notion of mutual information to …

Research Methods For Architecture (Review), Rumiko Handa Jan 2017

Research Methods For Architecture (Review), Rumiko Handa

Architecture Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity

Review of Ray Lucas, Research Methods for Architecture (Laurence King, 2016).

Renewed interest in integrating research into design is apparent when we look at books published on the topic in recent years. The go-to textbook for more than a decade, Linda Groat and David Wang’s Architectural Research Methods was revised and expanded in a recent second edition (2013), reflecting such interest. The most important area of update is on the relationship between design and research. In particular, it explores research by design, that is, generating new knowledge using design as a method, as do a number of other publications. Among …

What If Anything Comes After The Insurrection Of Theology?, Colby Dickinson Jan 2017

What If Anything Comes After The Insurrection Of Theology?, Colby Dickinson

Theology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Over the course of Judeo-Christian history, the boundaries endemic to its theological thought have been dualistic in nature. The clashes between the orthodox and the heretical, nomianism and anti-nomianism, apophatic thought and cataphatic thought, and theology from above versus theology from below have been all too evident. Recent trends in the field of Political Theology have developed a sub-genre of Radical Theology—best exemplified by the work of Ward Blanton, Clayton Crockett, Jeffrey W. Robbins, and Noëlle Vahanian—which is attempting to subvert such dualisms in hopes of rejecting traditional Western models of Onto-theology in favor of a theology that sparks genuine …

Challenging Hegemonic Gender Norms Through Stem Education In Nepal, Todd Wallenius, Barbara Grossman-Thompson Jan 2017

Challenging Hegemonic Gender Norms Through Stem Education In Nepal, Todd Wallenius, Barbara Grossman-Thompson

Development Journal of the South

Aid and development have long targeted schooling as a primary site of intervention in Nepal. However, scant research has explored perceptions of development among educators themselves. This study considers how Nepali educators understand themselves as beneficiaries and agents of development within the context of a U.S. Department of State funded education program. Further, the paper considers how educators understand hegemonic gender norms, and how their participation in this program may challenge them. The study suggests that the program - as part of larger development initiatives - is a location and context through which and educators identities are negotiated in Nepal.

The Prevalence Of Double Eyelid And The 3d Measurement Of Orbital Soft Tissue In Malays And Chinese, T.Y. Lu, K. Kadir, Wei Cheong Ngeow, Siti Adibah Othman

Research Publications (2016 to 2020)

This study aimed to determine the prevalence of double eyelid among two main Mongoloid ethnicities, the Malays and Chinese who reside in Malaysia. We also measured their periorbital tissue parameters for application in anthropology, optometry, ophthalmology, oculoplastic surgery and maxillofacial trauma surgery. The images of the 103 Malay and 97 Chinese volunteers were captured using indirect 3D photogrammetry, and quantitative measurement was obtained using the software provided by the manufacturer. All Malays and 70.1% of Chinese in this cross section population had double eyelid on both eyes. The mean pretarsal skin height was 3.99 mm for the Malays and 2.29 …

Interdependence: Being Reformed By Students With Disabilities, Melinda Eichhorn Jan 2017

Interdependence: Being Reformed By Students With Disabilities, Melinda Eichhorn

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

Throughout my career in special education, I have reconsidered my beliefs about disability. As I have transitioned from a special educator to a teacher trainer in India to an assistant professor in a Christian college, I have looked beyond limitations and deficits of my students to see individual uniqueness. In this article, I share my lived experience of people with severe special needs ministering to me in India, explore the lived experiences of other disability advocates, and describe the implications this has for my teaching at a Christian college.

Schedding Light On Eu Financial Regulators: A Sociological And Physchological Perspective, Giuliano G. Castellano, Geneviève Helleringer Jan 2017

Schedding Light On Eu Financial Regulators: A Sociological And Physchological Perspective, Giuliano G. Castellano, Geneviève Helleringer

UC Law SF International Law Review

In the aftermath of the 2007-2009 Global Financial Crisis, financial regulation in the European Union, following an international trend, underwent a process of intensive legal reforms that led to the revision of the legal premises underpinning the EU architectural framework for financial regulation and supervision. The EU has attempted to design a better equipped supranational apparatus for the governance of financial markets and crises. This effort accompanies a more general questioning of the role of law in the financial sector. The interaction between financial entities and legal rules has been reexamined and novel theories have focused on the idea that …

Per Scientiam Ad Justitiam: Magnus Hirschfeld's Episteme Of Biological Publicity, Kevin S. Amidon Ph.D.

Modern Languages Faculty Publications

Magnus Hirschfeld’s Institute for Sexual Science was founded in Berlin in 1919 as a place of research, political advocacy, counseling, and public education. Inspired by the world’s first gay rights organizations, it was closely allied with other groups fighting for sexual reform and women’s rights, and was destroyed in 1933 as the first target of the Nazi book burnings. Not Straight from Germany examines the legacy of that history, combining essays and a lavish array of visual materials. Scholarly essays investigate the ways in which sex became public in early 20th-century Germany, contributing to a growing awareness of Hirschfeld’s influence …

The Traditional And Ecclesiastical Paul Of 1 Corinthians, Benjamin L. White Jan 2017

The Traditional And Ecclesiastical Paul Of 1 Corinthians, Benjamin L. White

Publications

This article challenges the use o f I Corinthians as the starting point of a popular devolutionary narrative whereby the charismatic historical Paul gave way over time to the ecclesiastical “Paul” of the canonical tradition. I draw attention to the numerous ways in which the Paul of 1 Corinthians appeals to tradition and to wider ecclesial practices as a way of constraining the practices and beliefs of the Corinthians, and I argue that this devolutionary narrative is being undergirded not by a close reading of the primary sources, or by a careful application of Max Weber’s nuanced work on authority, …
