“I Am The Mahar Of Your Mahars:” Cokhāmelā, The Modern Dalit Movement, And The Dalit Christian Theology, Chris Conway Jan 2017

“I Am The Mahar Of Your Mahars:” Cokhāmelā, The Modern Dalit Movement, And The Dalit Christian Theology, Chris Conway

School of Theology and Seminary Faculty Publications

Over the last century, Cokhāmelā’s place and prominence in the Modern Dalit Movement and Dalit Christian theology have waned significantly. As the liberating potential of his work failed to be actualized, and more recent Dalit figures like Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and movements like Dalit Sahitya began to examine his work and life more critically, Cokhāmelā and his abhangas were found inadequate. Cokhāmelā became identified as one whose conscientisation remained incomplete, primarily because he failed to convert from Hinduism and saw his caste through the lens of karma. This essay re-examines Cokhāmelā’s life, death, and legacy so as to reassess his …

Spirit Determinism In The Christian Anthropology Of Yorù̀Bá Indigenous Churches, Bernard T. Ayọ̀Ọlá Jan 2017

Spirit Determinism In The Christian Anthropology Of Yorù̀Bá Indigenous Churches, Bernard T. Ayọ̀Ọlá

CTS PhD Doctoral Dissertations

There are people who think everything in life is an accident. Then, there are the Yorùbá of Southwestern Nigeria who believe that life outcomes are prearranged by the Supreme Being but may also be altered, for better or for worse, by the spirit beings in the universe. Yorùbá Christians, like their non-Christian kin, believe that many experiences in life are manifestations of the activities of the superhuman spirit beings in the community. While the good spirits (such as ancestors and angels) ordinarily have positive impacts on society, the evil spirits (such as witches, wizards, and demons) often work in collaboration …

The purpose of this quantitative study was to see if a statistically significant relationship existed between principal communication style and school climate as perceived by elementary teachers in high achieving Title 1 elementary schools in a Midwest state. Teacher perceptions of principal communication style were assessed using the Communication Style Inventory (CSI). The six communication styles assessed were Expressiveness, Preciseness, Verbal Aggressiveness, Questioningness, Emotionality, and Impression Manipulativeness. Teacher perceptions of school climate were assessed using the Organization Climate Description Questionnaire – Revised Elementary (OCDQ-RE). School climate scores were calculated regarding a degree of principal openness and a degree of teacher …

The Electrochemical Behavior Of Molybdenum And Tungsten Tri-Nuclear Metal Clusters With Ethanoate Ligands, Edward Nelson Kennedy Jan 2017

The Electrochemical Behavior Of Molybdenum And Tungsten Tri-Nuclear Metal Clusters With Ethanoate Ligands, Edward Nelson Kennedy

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The goal of this research was to study the electrochemical behavior of tri-nuclear clusters of molybdenum and tungsten. In addition, the feasibility of using these clusters as catalysts for the purpose of oxidizing ethanol was investigated. Four tri-nuclear cluster compounds were studied: hexa-Mu2-acetatotriaquadi-Mu3-oxotrimolybdenum (IV, IV, IV) trifluoromethanesulfonate [Mo3O2(O2CCH3)6(H2O)3](CF3SO3)2, hexa-Mu2-acetatotriaquadi-Mu3-oxodimolybdenum (IV, IV) tungsten (IV) trifluoromethanesulfonate [Mo2W2O2(O2CCH3)6(H2O)3](CF3SO3)2, hexa-Mu2-acetatotriaquadi-Mu3-oxomolybdenum (IV) ditungsten (IV, IV) trifluoromethanesulfonate [MoW2O2(O2CCH3)6(H2O)3](CF3SO3)2, and hexa-Mu2-acetatotriaquadi-Mu3-oxotritungsten (IV, IV, IV) trifluoromethanesulfonate [W3O2(O2CCH3)6(H2O)3](CF3SO3)2.Data was gathered from experimental results with cyclic voltammetry for the four tri-nuclear clusters. Initially, an ionic liquid, EMIBF4 (1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate), was used as the solvent. Subsequent solvents for use with these …

Review Of Early Quakers And Their Theological Thought, Leah Payne Jan 2017

Review Of Early Quakers And Their Theological Thought, Leah Payne

Quaker Religious Thought

First-generation Quakers were a radical and persecuted sect of early modern British Christianity. Early Quakers and Their Theological Thought: 1647-1723 shows why the Quakers have survived when so many other 17th century radicals—including Diggers, Ranters, Levellers or Muggletonians—did not. Along the way readers also discover why the Friends, though initially derided, are so loved in the twenty-first century. Quaker theology, rejected by the powers that be in its own era, resonates with many 21st century readers.

Science And Christian Hope: A Dialogue And Integration Of Their End-Time Narratives, Wilson Angelo G. Espiritu Jan 2017

Science And Christian Hope: A Dialogue And Integration Of Their End-Time Narratives, Wilson Angelo G. Espiritu

Theology Department Faculty Publications

Ruminations about how the world will end continuously stir the curiosity and imagination of a lot of people. These thoughts mostly deal with the possible end-story of history. Science, on one hand, surmises history’s tragic end in its theories about cosmic death. On the other hand, Christianity believes in existence that transcends personal and cosmic death. On surface, the two seem to contradict each other. For some, this confirms the notion that science and Christianity cannot go hand and hand or, worse, that they are adversarial to each other. This paper argues that while the scientific and the Christian end-time …

Mitochondrial-Dna Phylogenetic Information And The Reconstruction Of Human Population History: The South American Case, María Bárbara Postillone, S. Ivan Perez

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

Objectives: Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequences are becoming increasingly important in the study of human population history. Here, we explore the differences in the amount of information of different mtDNA regions and their utility for the reconstruction of South American population history.

Material and methods: We analyzed six datasets comprising 259 mtDNA sequences from South America: Complete mtDNA, Coding, Control, hypervariable region I (HVRI), cytochrome b (cytb) plus Control, and cytb plus 12S plus 16S. The amount of information in each dataset was estimated employing several site-by-site and haplotype based statistics, distances among sequences, Neighbor-joining trees, distances among the estimated trees, …

Selfhood, Historical Consciousness, And The State In International Relations Theory, Edinson Oquendo Jan 2017

Selfhood, Historical Consciousness, And The State In International Relations Theory, Edinson Oquendo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This work seeks to examine the role of the state in international relations. While international relations treat states as institutions endowed with agency, they lack any means of explaining how the state can gain agency, autonomy, and rationality.

My dissertation seeks to reorient the theoretical assumptions of international relations in two ways. I develop a theory of the of the state that seeks to explain the mechanisms by which individuals are able to form collective social institutions and to endow them with authority and agency. I examine the relationship of the individuals to collective bodies such as states that can …

Resilience Theory In Climate-Based Agriculture Development Projects: Useful Framework Or Popular Buzzword?, Rebecca Ann Chillrud Jan 2017

Resilience Theory In Climate-Based Agriculture Development Projects: Useful Framework Or Popular Buzzword?, Rebecca Ann Chillrud

Bard Center for Environmental Policy

International development organizations are increasingly attempting to improve the resilience of the communities they serve through their projects in these communities. However, these projects often fail to address key concepts from the resilience theory literature, calling into question their ability to effectively promote resilience. This thesis attempts to locate these gaps in understanding by analyzing proposal documents from projects intending to promote agricultural resilience to climate change. A content analysis approach was used to analyze 55 projects from three international development groups—the Global Environment Facility, the World Bank, and the United Nations Development Program—proposed or completed between 2006 and 2016. …

Ambassador Dr. Cynthia Shepard Perry: A Sycamore Destined For Greatness, Crystal Mikell Reynolds

Student Diversity Histories

Ambassador Cynthia Shepard Perry is perhaps best known for her role as Ambassador to the African nations of Sierra Leone, and Burundi, and as Executive Director of the African Development Bank in Tunisia. This dynamic woman, born in Lost Creek, a suburb of Terre Haute, Indiana, was destined for greatness, according to her prophetic father, a veteran of WWI. He saw her birth date on November 11, Veteran’s Day, and her keen intellect as a sign that she was exceptional. Her father’s premonition about her would in fact come to fruition: in her thirty-year career as a United Nations and …

Juan Pablo Ortega Fermín, Ph.D.: El Quimico Krypton, Crystal Mikell Reynolds

Student Diversity Histories

Krypton is a chemical element that is colorless, odorless, and difficult to discover. Krypton takes its name from the Greek word for “hidden,” kryptos. Like the chemical, which is often hidden, Juan Ortega (the name he is commonly known as) is a name that is not well-known in the annals of the history of Indiana State University. Actually, very few people at the University have probably even heard of this hidden figure. Names like Bird and Baumgartner are much more recognizable. However, Ortega was a leader in his field and taught and mentored countless students in his native Venezuela, building …

Nonconsensual Collaborations, 2012-Present: Notes On A Shared Condition, Aliza Shvarts Jan 2017

Nonconsensual Collaborations, 2012-Present: Notes On A Shared Condition, Aliza Shvarts

Journal of Feminist Scholarship

"Nonconsensual Collaborations, 2012-present: Notes on a Shared Condition" is an extended performance text. It investigates the unmarked gendered dynamics of artistic collaboration, documenting a series of “nonconsensual collaborations”—that is, performances with other artists who did not agree to their participation. Presented here as written narratives, these nonconsensual collaborations frame everyday occurrences of violation, erasure, and misrecognition, exploring how discourses of consent arise from the raced and gendered histories of property relations. They call into question the politics of representation, the status of the document, the formation of evidentiary truth, and the interpenetration of sexual and aesthetic economies. These nonconsensual collaborations …

Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences Faculty Publications

Delivery of effective mental health and psychosocial support programs requires knowledge of existing health systems and socio-cultural context. To respond rapidly to humanitarian emergencies, international organizations often seek to design programs according to international guidelines and mobilize external human resources to manage and deliver programs. Familiarizing international humanitarian practitioners with local culture and contextualizing programs is essential to minimize risk of harm, maximize benefit, and optimize efficient use of resources. Timely literature reviews on traditional health practices, cultural beliefs and attitudes toward mental health and illness, local health care systems and previous experiences with humanitarian interventions can provide international practitioners …

Democratic Dissent And The Politics Of Rescue During The Twenty-First Century’S “Inhospitable” Eu Migration “Crisis”, Marouf Hasian Jr., José Ángel Maldonado Olivas, Stephanie Marek Muller Jan 2017

Democratic Dissent And The Politics Of Rescue During The Twenty-First Century’S “Inhospitable” Eu Migration “Crisis”, Marouf Hasian Jr., José Ángel Maldonado Olivas, Stephanie Marek Muller

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

This article uses critical approaches to examine the ways in which dissenters have objected to the European Union’s current “politics of rescue.” The authors argue that the term “hospitality” has been a key term in liberal theorizing about mobility since the Enlightenment, but that various neo-liberal “pull” theories, worries about securitization and the militarization of rescue efforts in the Mediterranean have converged in ways that have turned Europe into an “inhospitable” place for foreigners. The authors use three short case studies—of maritime captains’ and sailors’ rescue efforts, academic critiques of FRONTEX, and vernacular reactions to the iconic Kurdi image—to put …
