New Bad Girls Of Sudan: Women Singers In The Sudanese Diaspora, Anita H. Fábos Jan 2017

New Bad Girls Of Sudan: Women Singers In The Sudanese Diaspora, Anita H. Fábos

Faculty Works

Explores the new ‘bad girls’ of Sudanese music as they defy national boundaries to bring women’s perspectives and critiques to a global audience. Performers such as Alsarah and Rasha have access to a world music stage to comment upon gender and racial hierarchies, chide Sudanese power brokers about their transgressions, and encourage a more inclusive and just society. Pushback against new voices have included charges in the public domain (e.g. YouTube comments) that these performances are haram and sullied by foreign influence. Emerging out of a larger ethnographic investigation of the Sudanese acoustics of diaspora, my feminist analysis of ‘bad …

Provenance Investigations Of Raw Materials In Pre-Columbian Textiles From Pachacamac; Strontium Isotope Analyses, Karin Margarita Frei, Lena Bjerregaard Jan 2017

Provenance Investigations Of Raw Materials In Pre-Columbian Textiles From Pachacamac; Strontium Isotope Analyses, Karin Margarita Frei, Lena Bjerregaard

PreColumbian Textile Conference VII / Jornadas de Textiles PreColombinos VII (2016)

Pachacamac was considered a sanctuary or oracle by several of the pre-Columbian Andean cultures. As a pilgrimage destination, the site was rich in archaeological artifacts and yielded also many well preserved textiles. Some of the objects found at Pachacamac are considered offerings by the pilgrims to their Gods, and the majority are assumed to be of nonlocal origin. Others are from the Ychsma people, who lived in Pachacamac and the nearby Rimac Valley during the last centuries before the conquest. We have investigated 10 pre-Columbian textile samples, which were supposedly excavated at the archaeological site of Pachacamac, Peru. The textiles …

Two Types Of Bone Necrosis In The Middle Triassic Pistosaurus Longaevus Bones: The Results Of Integrated Studies, Dawid Surmik, Bruce M. Rothschild, Mateusz Dulski, Katarzyna Janiszewska Jan 2017

Two Types Of Bone Necrosis In The Middle Triassic Pistosaurus Longaevus Bones: The Results Of Integrated Studies, Dawid Surmik, Bruce M. Rothschild, Mateusz Dulski, Katarzyna Janiszewska

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Avascular necrosis, diagnosed on the basis of either a specific pathological modification of the articular surfaces of bone or its radiologic appearance in vertebral centra, has been recognized in many Mesozoic marine reptiles as well as in present-day marine mammals. Its presence in the zoological and paleontologic record is usually associated with decompression syndrome, a disease that affects secondarily aquatic vertebrates that could dive. Bone necrosis can also be caused by infectious processes, but it differs in appearance from decompression syndrome-associated aseptic necrosis. Herein, we report evidence of septic necrosis in the proximal articular surface of the femur of a …

Divergent Human Cortical Regions For Processing Distinct Acoustic-Semantic Categories Of Natural Sounds: Animal Action Sounds Vs. Vocalizations, Paula J. Webster, Laura M. Skipper-Kallal, Chris A. Frum, Hayley N. Still, B Douglas Ward, James W. Lewis Jan 2017

Divergent Human Cortical Regions For Processing Distinct Acoustic-Semantic Categories Of Natural Sounds: Animal Action Sounds Vs. Vocalizations, Paula J. Webster, Laura M. Skipper-Kallal, Chris A. Frum, Hayley N. Still, B Douglas Ward, James W. Lewis

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

A major gap in our understanding of natural sound processing is knowledge of where or how in a cortical hierarchy differential processing leads to categorical perception at a semantic level. Here, using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) we sought to determine if and where cortical pathways in humans might diverge for processing action sounds vs. vocalizations as distinct acoustic-semantic categories of real-world sound when matched for duration and intensity. This was tested by using relatively less semantically complex natural sounds produced by non-conspecific animals rather than humans. Our results revealed a striking double-dissociation of activated networks bilaterally. This included a …

Through A Broader Lens: An Exploration Of International Service Learning And Life Calling, Lauren Carter

Master of Arts in Higher Education (MAHE) Theses

One of the many opportunities presented to college students within their college experience is the opportunity to participate in an international service learning trip. The purpose of this study was to explore the impacts of international service learning on life calling. Through phenomenological research, this study examined the individual international service learning experiences of eleven alumni and addressed the following questions:

  1. Does international service learning impact a student’s sense of calling?
  2. How would students define their sense of calling after an international service learning trip?

Major emergent themes included the experiences on a team; the broadening of life calling; impacted …

"In Nova Fert Animus Mutatas Dicere Formas Corpora": A Comparison Of Three Themes In Ovid And Ancient Near Eastern Mythology, Austen Aquino

Honors Thesis Collection

This thesis will attempt to demonstrate the merits of structuralist, text-focused analysis, as opposed to historicist models of hypothetical cross-cultural contact. This thesis will present three comparative case studies—hospitality narratives, flood narratives, and creation narratives—each of which will utilize a structuralist methodology. In each chapter, the structure of each version of the umbrella myth will be diagrammed in relation to each other. The diagrams are tabular, and schematize the individual narrative functions that comprise each umbrella myth-type in a highly abstracted form. This visualization allows the reader to clearly see the role each function plays within its respective narrative context, …

Electronic On The Ground: Imagining Community And Crafting Culture In Beijing’S Electronic Music Scene, Juliet Liu Jan 2017

Electronic On The Ground: Imagining Community And Crafting Culture In Beijing’S Electronic Music Scene, Juliet Liu

Honors Thesis Collection

Electronic music, an art form that has existed in dynamic forms since the 1970s, is rapidly moving from the underground to the mainstream all across the globe. It is therefore a phenomenon that deserves significant cultural analysis in various global contexts. Still, there is a dearth of ethnographic explorations of electronic music and art in China. Over the course of three weeks, I conducted anthropological fieldwork in China to better understand the social worlds, aesthetic impulses, and musical philosophies of electronic producers in Beijing to better understand global circuits of cultural exchange, concepts of cultural authenticity, and the fluid concept …

Women’S Legal Agency And Property In The Court Records Of Late 19th-Century Brava, Lidwien Kapteijns, Alessandra Vianello Jan 2017

Women’S Legal Agency And Property In The Court Records Of Late 19th-Century Brava, Lidwien Kapteijns, Alessandra Vianello

Faculty Research and Scholarship

Drawing on the Islamic court records of Brava, a small Indian Ocean port city on the southern Benadir coast of Somalia, dating from the period 1893-1900, this essay analyzes the legal agency and economic roles of the women of Brava and sheds new light on social (especially family) relations in this town. The qāḍī’s court records give evidence of married women’s fully recognized (even if qualified) legal personhood and their full-fledged financial and economic agency. The free, married women of Brava of this period contributed fully and autonomously to the economic endeavors of their families and also interacted with non-related …

The Writing Center: Reports

This milestone [publication] invites a retrospective look at the impact and scope of our services. The many evolutions of the UM Writing Center—from a small “lab” for struggling writers in 2002 to a robust communication center for undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and staff in 2017—have consistently embodied education at its best: communities of practice at the intersection of students, faculty, staff, and tutors.

Archaeology And The Computing Age, Austin Valentine, Austin Valentine Jr.

Integrated Studies

The utilization of computer technology applied to historical artifact investigation has opened a number of locked doors despite numerous concerns by critics. Through the use of computer technology, both scientist and historians now have the ability to perform in-depth investigations into aspects surrounding various questionable historical occurrences. However, some critics feel the application of computer technology could bring unwanted answers to some historically significant events.

In this paper I will introduce my research by initially giving a brief background into the evolution of computer technology applied to historical investigation. Through the explanation of various technological tools of the trade, I …

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A taxonomic description of three novel species and update of two previously described Bacillariophyta (Diatom) species from the Pliocene Hadar Formation, Afar Depression of Ethiopia is presented. The taxonomic description preludes a quantitative reconstruction of the environmental conditions of Paleolake Hadar, also presented herein. This thesis plays an integral role in the Hominin Sites and Paleolakes Drilling Project (HSPDP), an interdisciplinary investigation into the climate, environment, and ecological context of human and hominin evolution in East Africa. The HSPDP aims to provide a continuous record of paleo-conditions that influenced hominin evolution. This thesis focuses on the Northern Awash Werenso drill-core …

Transcendental Resistance: The New Americanists And Emerson's Challenge, Johannes Voelz Jan 2017

Transcendental Resistance: The New Americanists And Emerson's Challenge, Johannes Voelz

Dartmouth College Press

About the Book

Johannes Voelz offers a critique of the New Americanists through a stimulating and original reexamination of the iconic figure of Ralph Waldo Emerson. Voelz argues against the prevailing tendency among Americanists to see Emerson as the product of an “all-pervasive scope of cultural power.” Instead he shows Emerson’s philosophy to be a deft response to the requirements of lecturing professionally at the newly built lyceums around the country. Voelz brings to light a fascinating organic relationship between Emerson’s dynamic style of thinking and the uplifting experience demanded by his public. This need for an audience-directed philosophy, the …

Women As Agents Of Salvation In The Old Testament: An Appraisal Of Hannah And Abigail In Israel's Early Monarchy (1 Samuel 1-3, 25), Lazarus Ejike Onuh Jan 2017

Women As Agents Of Salvation In The Old Testament: An Appraisal Of Hannah And Abigail In Israel's Early Monarchy (1 Samuel 1-3, 25), Lazarus Ejike Onuh

Theology Graduate Theses

The women of the Old Testament were not merely ancillary to the men. From the matriarchal era down to the monarchical period, the Old Testament eloquently attests to the equality and shared responsibility between man and woman. The creation of הָֽאָדָם֙ (mankind) in the image and likeness of God confers on both the male and female an ontological equality; an equality that is shown in their joint authority over creation (Genesis 1:27-28). While not denying the fact that the Old Testament can rightly be viewed as a product of predominantly male authors and features a galaxy of male actors, it …

Expanding Transnational Frames Into Composition Studies: Revising The Rhetoric And Writing Minor At The American University In Cairo, James P. Austin Jan 2017

Expanding Transnational Frames Into Composition Studies: Revising The Rhetoric And Writing Minor At The American University In Cairo, James P. Austin

English Faculty Publications

This chapter examines U.S.-based approaches to curricular revision of the Rhetoric and Writing Minor at the American University in Cairo (AUC) through analysis of faculty interviews and relevant artifacts. Through this analysis, and consideration of AUC’s development in the context of changes in Egypt, the chapter argues that U.S.-based curricular approaches satisfied various local needs among AUC’s writing faculty and students. These findings complicate claims within international composition studies, which are concerned with non-reflective export of U.S. linguistic, pedagogical and program models into international sites. This chapter calls for expanding the perspective of U.S.-based approaches to composition studies to include …

Executives, Administrators, & Staff Publications

Researchers have documented how race and racism influence the college experiences of U.S. citizens. However, research on the ways that race and racism affect international students warrants similar attention. This qualitative study explored how international students learned about U.S. concepts of race and racism and how such concepts shaped their college experiences. The participating international college students learned about U.S. concepts of race and racism through media, relationships, formal education, and lived experiences. They defined these concepts in varying ways and had varying racial ideologies.

Strategic Person And Organization Development: Implications Of Imago Dei For Contemporary Human Resource Management, Richard H. Jonsen

Rohrer College of Business Departmental Research

This paper examines and compares the foundational assumptions of contemporary scholarship and practice on strategic human resource management to those embedded in emerging Christian faith-based approaches to business. An alternative ecumenical, biblically based set of assumptions for a Christian approach to strategic human resource management — or strategic person and organization development — is developed, along with corresponding set principles for future scholarship and practice.

Understanding How Social Entrepreneurs Fit Into The Tourism Discourse, Ziene Mottiar, Karla Boluk Jan 2017

Understanding How Social Entrepreneurs Fit Into The Tourism Discourse, Ziene Mottiar, Karla Boluk

Books / Book chapters

This chapter discusses how social entrepreneurs fit into the existing tourism discourse. It examines four areas of literature in particular, tourism entrepreneurs, sustainability, destination development and intrapreneurship, and analyzes how introducing the concept of social entrepreneurs into these discussions is useful, and contributes to our understanding. Furthermore the paper illustrates that as social entrepreneurs are relevant to a broad range of issues in the tourism literature this should prevent the development of research silos where social entrepreneurship scholars seek out their own vein of research. The nexus of common ground and interests, as displayed in this chapter, should enhance the …

The Evolution Of Destination Branding: A Review Of Branding Literature In Tourism, Marta Almeyda-Ibáñez, Babu P. George

Management Faculty Publications

Tourism is a promise and destinations communicate the credibility of that promise by means of destination brands. Branding has become a key tool for tourism destinations to make explicit the complexity of experiences to be expected by tourists visiting a destination. This paper provides a comprehensive literature review of various issues associated with tourism destination branding. It brings together a wide range of debates in the generic marketing literature, places them alongside the nuances of tourism, and thereby identifies unique challenges of branding in tourism destination contexts. Finally, a case study of USP based national tourism branding campaigns in the …
