Bioethics In The Work Of Ernest Everett Just: + Missing - Some 400 Pages, Theodore Walker Jan 2017

Bioethics In The Work Of Ernest Everett Just: + Missing - Some 400 Pages, Theodore Walker

Perkins Faculty Research and Special Events

Biology + ethics = bioethics. Here we see that Howard University biologist Ernest Everett Just (born 1883, died 1941) connected biology to ethics.

According to Just, various forms of specific biology (including especially cell biology) plus “general biology” are necessary for explaining adequately the origin of ethical behaviors. Social ethical behaviors, especially mutual aid and cooperative interactions with others and the environment, are essential to evolutionary advances among living creatures, ranging from humans to cells. Accordingly, theory of ethics (moral theory) should have roots in biology.

Also, Just wrote an unpublished book-length manuscript—“some 400 typed pages” (Just 1940)—on seeking the …

Past Perfect: Utopian Visions In Historical Perspective, Seton Hall University, Department Of History Jan 2017

Past Perfect: Utopian Visions In Historical Perspective, Seton Hall University, Department Of History

Symposium in Comparative History

This symposium seeks to explore the phenomenon of utopias in all their incarnations—real and imagined; micro and macro; past, present and future. We seek to situate utopian thinking historically and culturally. Are these visions of a perfect world a distinctive feature of Western modernity or do they tap into a more universal impulse? What can utopias tell us about the societies and eras that produced them? What is the view of human nature underlying utopian ideals? We look to explore the processes by which utopian ideals are developed and disseminated. What sort of people build utopias? What makes some utopian …

The Great Prayer Of Thanksgiving At Baptism And The Lord's Supper, John D. Witvliet Jan 2017

The Great Prayer Of Thanksgiving At Baptism And The Lord's Supper, John D. Witvliet

Symposium on Worship Archive

In the past 40 years, many Protestant communions have recovered a robust, historically-oriented prayer of thanksgiving at celebrations of Baptism and the Lord’s Supper. Nearly every official denominational liturgical publication has featured strong examples of this practice. Yet thousands of local congregations do not practice this for a variety of reasons, including concern over the length of the service, and—quite likely—not really understanding the spiritually formative power of this practice for the daily life and faith of Christian believers. This session will feature a robust testimony about the value of this ancient practice, deeply rooted in the Psalms, and present …

Perceptions Of The Arkansas Association Of Chiefs Of Police Regarding Preferred Educational Curricula For Law Enforcement Training In Higher Education, Dawn Deneice Phillips

Student Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research project was to examine perceptions of Arkansas Chiefs of Police (AACP) regarding preferred curricula for law enforcement training in higher education. Respondents were asked if national core curricula, mandated for Law Enforcement Training Academies located on colleges and universities would, improve police professionalism; serve to legitimize the police professionalism; improve police productivity; and, reduce incidents of police misconduct. Respondents were then asked what curricula should be utilized to best prepare law enforcement personnel. Finally, quantitative analysis was performed to determine if a relationship exist between curricula perceptions and the independent variables of experience, education, region, …

Organizing Faculty Unions In A Right-To-Work Environment, Thomas Auxter Jan 2017

Organizing Faculty Unions In A Right-To-Work Environment, Thomas Auxter

Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy

Right-to-work states are generally considered to be hostile environments for public employees who try to organize and secure union representation in order to maintain rights to fair treatment and just compensation through collective bargaining over an extended period of time. However, in one right-to-work state, Florida, we find examples of unions that have managed to survive and develop over decades. To understand the significance of this phenomenon, we need to ask several questions. What conditions make this possible? What kinds of unions are favored by these conditions? What goals can unions realistically expect to set? What would it take for public …

South-South: Too Political?, Béatrice Joyeux-Prunel Jan 2017

South-South: Too Political?, Béatrice Joyeux-Prunel

Artl@s Bulletin

When it comes to researching South-South relationships, a powerful political imperative underpins studies of such relationships—an imperative that seems to always point northwards in one way or another. This imperative sometimes leads to the application of pre-existing theories to studies of circulation between different parts of the world and of the roles of the individuals driving these circulations. When, regardless of the situation in question, we must always identify a dominator and a dominated party, a predator and a victim, a colonizer and a colonial subject, we risk developing a historical picture that is incomplete or distorted. Promoting studies …

The Tension Between Religion And Democracy, B. Herry-Priyono Jan 2017

The Tension Between Religion And Democracy, B. Herry-Priyono

Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi

The growing revival of religious sentiments in the past few decades exposes serious faults in the explanatory power of the so-called modernization theories, urging social scien- tists to seek new avenues in understanding the phenomena. The article focuses on the way the present character of religious fundamentalism needs to be understood not as a form of traditionalism but as one of the springboard effects inseparable from hybrid modernity. In particular, it highlights the tension between religious fundamentalism and democracy as revolving around at least two points. One is the antinomy between diver- sity as the sine-qua-non of democracy and the …

Kebebasan Morfologis Dalam Budaya Konsumen Human Enhancement Technology: Studi Kasus Budaya Konsumen Obat Non-Terapeutik Pada Pemuda, Sony Matin Abdussalam

Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi

Nowadays, technological innovations and sciences have reached the stage of modification and improvement of the capacity of the human body. This technology varies from prosthetic devices, implants, plastic surgery, drugs, genetic engineering, nanotechnology, and others. Several previous studies have shown that the advancement of this technological intervention has created a consumer culture of human enhancement products and services, for instance, non-therapeutic drugs. However, previous discussions about human enhancement products and services failed to provide further explanation on morphological freedom from the perspective of consumer culture. Morphological freedom is an individual right to modify or otherwise, refuse to modify one’s physical …

Can Law Be A Source Of Insight For Other Academic Disciplines?, Stephen Matthew Feldman

Faculty Articles

Law has been a borrower but not a supplier Law schools in effect have been located on oneway streets with ideas flowing in but nothing going out This essay is intended to begin a dialogue that could change the oneway streets between law schools and other university departments into twoway streets I want to demonstrate that legal and jurisprudential studies can be a source of ideas for scholars in other fields In particular this essay argues that the legal concept of the burden of proof can illuminate disputes between theorists of modernism and postmodernism
