On My Grind: Freestyle Rap Practices In Experimental Creative Writing And Composition Pedagogy, Evan Nave Mar 2017

On My Grind: Freestyle Rap Practices In Experimental Creative Writing And Composition Pedagogy, Evan Nave

Theses and Dissertations

My work is always necessarily two-headed. Double-voiced. Call-and-response at once. Paranoid self-talk as dichotomous monologue to move the crowd. Part of this has to do with the deep cuts and scratches in my mind. Recorded and remixed across DNA double helixes. Structurally split. Generationally divided. A style and family history built on breaking down.

Evidence of how ill I am.

And then there’s the matter of skin. The material concerns of cultural cross-fertilization. Itching to plant seeds where the grass is always greener. Color collaborations and appropriations. Writing white/out with black art ink. Distinctions dangerously hidden behind backbeats or shamelessly …

Clientelism And Citizens' Right To The City In The Province Of Buenos Aires, Sara Hyman Mar 2017

Clientelism And Citizens' Right To The City In The Province Of Buenos Aires, Sara Hyman

University Honors Theses

This research examines the relationship between neoliberalism, clientelism, and citizen’s right to the city in the province of Buenos Aires. In the early 1990s a wave of neoliberal economic reform swept through Argentina. The social ramifications of this economic restructuring left many citizens marginalized and disenfranchised. In order to make ends meet, poor citizens exchanged their votes to receive basic necessities in a practice called clientelism. Urban clientelism, or the exchange of votes for goods, is analyzed within the theoretical understanding of Henri Lefebvre’s right to the city. Ethnographic accounts detailing the relationship between clientelist brokers and community residents in …

Smoking Trends Among U.S. Latinos, 1998–2013: The Impact Of Immigrant Arrival Cohort, Georgiana Bostean, Annie Ro, Nancy L. Fleischer

Sociology Faculty Articles and Research

Few studies examine nativity disparities in smoking in the U.S., thus a major gap remains in understanding whether immigrant Latinos’ smoking prevalence is stable, converging, or diverging, compared with U.S.-born Latinos. This study aimed to disentangle the roles of period changes, duration of U.S. residence, and immigrant arrival cohort in explaining the gap in smoking prevalence between foreign-born and U.S.-born Latinos. Using repeated cross-sectional data spanning 1998–2013 (U.S. National Health Interview Survey), regressions predicted current smoking among foreign-born and U.S.-born Latino men and women (n = 12,492). We contrasted findings from conventional regression analyses that simply include period and duration …

AND REFLECTIONS ON ALFA EDUCATIONAL SOCIETY

WRITTEN BY

CELESTINA DANKWA AGYEKUM

This paper practitioner’s report examines in three parts: the product, the professional and the personal chapters of my internship with ALFA Educational Society in Udaipur, India. ALFA Educational Society expresses its vision of youth led development by being a youth founded organization, youth run and by remaining at the grassroots level, while declining growth of the organization to keep true to its priorities of volunteerism. It is attentive about focusing on a moderate amount of villages it serves to remain …

Hegelian Dialectical Analysis Of U.S. Voting Laws, Charles Edward Andrew Lincoln Iv Mar 2017

Hegelian Dialectical Analysis Of U.S. Voting Laws, Charles Edward Andrew Lincoln Iv

Student Scholarship

This Comment uses the dialectical paradigm of German philosopher Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (1770-1833) to analyze the progression of United States voting laws since the colonial foundations of a participatory democratic process in this country. This analysis can be used to interpret past progression of voting rights in the United States as well as a provoking way to predict future trends in United States voting rights - as an ongoing "progressive" political process or rhetorical method of erasing categories or classifications and eliminating distinctions amongst persons.

Why Men Trophy Hunt, Chris T. Darimont, Brian F. Codding, Kristen Hawkes

Big-Game and Trophy Hunting Collection

The killing of Cecil the lion (Panthera leo) ignited enduring and increasingly global discussion about trophy hunting. Yet, policy debate about its benefits and costs focuses only on the hunted species and biodiversity, not the unique behaviour of hunters. Some contemporary recreational hunters from the developed world behave curiously, commonly targeting ‘trophies’: individuals within populations with large body or ornament size, as well as rare and/or inedible species, like carnivores. Although contemporary hunters have been classified according to implied motivation (i.e. for meat, recreation, trophy or population control, as well the ‘multiple satisfactions’ they seek while hunting (affiliation, …

No. 06: The Informal Sector’S Role In Food Security: A Missing Link In Policy Debates, Caroline Skinner, Gareth Haysom

Hungry Cities Partnership

This discussion paper aims to review what is currently known about the role played by the informal sector in general, and informal retailers in particular, in the accessibility of food in South Africa. The review seeks to identify policy-relevant research gaps. Drawing on Statistics South Africa data, we show that the informal sector is an important source of employment, dominated by informal trade with the sale of food a significant subsector within this trade. We then turn our attention to what is known about the informal sector’s role in food sourcing of poorer households. Surveys show that urban residents, and …

Continuity And Change In Puebloan Ritual Practice: 3,800 Years Of Shrine Use In The North American Southwest, Phil R. Geib, Carrie Heitman, Ronald C.D. Fields

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

Radiocarbon dates on artifacts from a Puebloan shrine in New Mexico reveal a persistence in ritual practice for some 3,800 years. The dates indicate that the shrine had become an important location for ceremonial observances related to warfare by almost 2000 cal. B.C., coinciding with the time when food production was first practiced in the Southwest. The shrine exhibits continuity of ritual behavior, something that Puebloans may find unsurprising, but also changes in the artifacts deposited that indicate new technology, transformations of belief, and perhaps shifting cultural boundaries. After briefly describing this shrine, we discuss some of the artifacts that …

Anthropology: Undergraduate Student Scholarship

Background: In the past fifty years, families in the USA have changed in configuration, size and dynamics. The percentage of families that do not conform to the traditional family unit (married mother and father with children) has increased as there are more single-parent families, LGBTQ families and interracial families. The proportion of unmarried or divorced families has also increased, as it has the number of married and unmarried couples that opt to not have children and, additionally, more couples are opting for adoption and foster parenting (Pew Research Center 2010). Furthermore, the percentage of households where all the adults work …

Extension Avenue Use Among Small-Scale Goat Producers In Missouri And Arkansas, Benjamin M. Onyango, Elizabeth L. Walker, Christine E. Sudbrock, Melissa A. Remley, Charlotte Clifford-Rathert, Kelsey F. Cole, Catherine Hoegeman, Mohammed Ibrahim Mar 2017

Extension Avenue Use Among Small-Scale Goat Producers In Missouri And Arkansas, Benjamin M. Onyango, Elizabeth L. Walker, Christine E. Sudbrock, Melissa A. Remley, Charlotte Clifford-Rathert, Kelsey F. Cole, Catherine Hoegeman, Mohammed Ibrahim

College of Agriculture

This study uses multivariate statistical procedures to explore extension avenues used by goat producers in Missouri and Arkansas. Use of an avenue is influenced by a number of factors including nature of issue, time, and scale of operation. The results show that professional avenues, which are deeply rooted in tradition and history, are the main outreach avenues, but the Internet is emerging as an important and increasingly utilized avenue by many goat producers. Demonstrational, family based, and specific client need based avenues are used less frequently.

Designing L2 Reading Lab Courseware At The Intermediate Level, Concepción B. Godev Mar 2017

Designing L2 Reading Lab Courseware At The Intermediate Level, Concepción B. Godev

Dimensions

Despite increasing attention on literacy-based approaches to foreign language instruction (e.g. Allen & Dupuy, 2013; Barrette, Paesani, & Vinall, 2010; Byrnes, 2005; Kern, 2004; Magnan, Murphy, & Sahakyan, 2014) the communicative approach’s emphasis on oral proficiency continues to shadow reading practices. Although research findings commonly report that extensive reading (pleasure reading) promotes L2 development (Al-Homoud & Schmitt 2009; Day, 2015; Mason & Krashen, 1997), instructors have reported that they do not include these reading practices in the curriculum due to budgetary constraints on reading resources, lack of instructional time, and concern over the complex coordination of reading resources (Macalister, 2010). …
