Objectives—Modern humans may have gracile skeletons due to low physical activity levels and mechanical loading. Tests using prehistoric skeletons are limited by the inability to assess behaviour directly, while modern industrialized societies possess few socio-ecological features typical of human evolutionary history. Among Tsimane forager-horticulturalists, we test whether greater activity levels and, thus, increased loading earlier in life are associated with greater later-life bone status and diminished age-related bone loss.
Materials and Methods—We used quantitative ultrasonography to assess radial and tibial status among adults aged 20+ years (mean±SD age=49±15; 52% female). We conducted systematic behavioural observations to assess earlier-life …

Open Mic: A Documentary Film Exploring Humorous Narratives, Ryan T. Cashman
Open Mic: A Documentary Film Exploring Humorous Narratives, Ryan T. Cashman
Theses and Dissertations
This documentary investigates hardship and identity through humor. The film shadows the lives of three individuals who are all going through a watershed experience with their identities ranging from changes in their family dynamics, gender, or environment. Participants will be writing and performing a stand-up routine in front of a live audience that focuses on a story about their identity. The film underscores how, or if, the sender’s use of humor helps them cope or achieve closure. The film does not explore the audience’s reaction to humor. Using in-depth interviews with each comic, the film centers around the sender, highlighting …

How To Conduct A Mini-Ethnographic Case Study: A Guide For Novice Researchers, Patricia I. Fusch Ph.D., Gene E. Fusch, Lawrence R. Ness
The Qualitative Report
The authors present how to construct a mini-ethnographic case study design with the benefit of an ethnographic approach bounded within a case study protocol that is more feasible for a student researcher with limited time and finances. The novice researcher should choose a design that enables one to best answer the research question. Secondly, one should choose the design that assists the researcher in reaching data saturation. Finally, the novice researcher must choose the design in which one can complete the study within a reasonable time frame with minimal cost. This is particularly important for student researchers. One can blend …

Huaxia Mythological Astronomy And The Comparative Literary Studies Of The Multi-Ethnic Chinese Nation, Yunhong Dai
Huaxia Mythological Astronomy And The Comparative Literary Studies Of The Multi-Ethnic Chinese Nation, Yunhong Dai
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Contemporary literary studies in China is moving towards a new direction, which is to reflect on and study the literature of multi-ethnic China by considering cultural-historical characteristics of the Chinese multi-ethnic nation and the multiple sources and ethnic groups in and of Chinese literature. Studies in Chinese mythology and archaeoastronomy indicate that Huaxia mythological astronomy is the source and basis of Chinese history, culture and literature. If the Chinese comparative literary studies reflect on their history, horizons and scope, Huaxia mythological astronomy should become a cornerstone and starting point of this discipline.

Transforming First-Year Information Literacy: Understanding Authority In A Sea Of Information, Michelle Reed, Jill Becker, Stephanie Gamble, Sofia Leung
UTA Libraries Staff Publications - Archive
This panel will discuss a university library's development and implementation of a 3-day information literacy unit that was integrated into 45 sections of the university's first-year experience seminar. Since 2012, the model of support for this course was a hands-on database searching session for each section of the course. Several factors warranted the revision of the information literacy component of the course. One, the model was not sustainable. A reduction in library staff strained the library's human resources, and the number of sections of the course was anticipated to grow. Two, conducting a workshop for each section revealed vast differences …
Self-Representation Of Women In Eighteenth-Century Europe: Lady Anna Miller And The Grand Tour, Annie Kristina Polzella
Self-Representation Of Women In Eighteenth-Century Europe: Lady Anna Miller And The Grand Tour, Annie Kristina Polzella
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The Grand Tour is known to scholars as a significant period of travel in which members of English society could immerse themselves in the foreign, while also adhering to established social customs. Scholarship previously regarded the Grand Tour as an intellectual journey for aristocratic Englishmen; however, an incorporation of women into this narrative has introduced many new and important themes that merit further study. Women’s increasing participation in the Grand Tour, which gained in popularity in the eighteenth century, reveals many unique aspects of British society in the period. The integration of women into the Tour is also an indication …

(Age)Ncy In Composition Studies, Alaina Tackitt
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The number of adult learners entering or returning to institutions of higher education is increasing in general and in relation to the traditional student population, and projections suggest that the trend will continue. As automation and technology impact the labor force, educational access is becoming a national concern and a necessity for more adult learners. Access to higher education impacts minority and economically depressed populations disproportionally and increases the personal and professional success of adult students and the long-term prosperity of their families. Although Composition Studies has a history of recognizing and facilitating student populations as they enter the Academy, …
Impacts Of Tourism Development On Livelihoods In Placencia Village, Belize, Crystal Ann Vitous
Impacts Of Tourism Development On Livelihoods In Placencia Village, Belize, Crystal Ann Vitous
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Placencia Village is one of Belize’s leading “eco-destinations,” due to its sandy-white beaches, coral reefs, and wildlife sanctuaries. While the use of “green washing,” the process of deceptively marketing products, aims or policies as being environmentally friendly, has proven to be effective in attracting consumers who are thought to be environmentally and socially conscious, the exponential growth, coupled with the absence of established policies, represents a significant threat to Belize. This thesis examines the political-ecologic dimensions of rapid tourism expansion in Southern Belize by investigating how the health of the biophysical environment is perceived, what processes are responsible for change, …
Linguistic And Sociological Dimensions Of The Illusive Concept Of Jamʿ, Mohamed Mohamed
Linguistic And Sociological Dimensions Of The Illusive Concept Of Jamʿ, Mohamed Mohamed
South East Coastal Conference on Languages & Literatures (SECCLL)
The Linguistic and Sociological Dimensions of the Illusive Concept of Jamʿ
Unlike ijmāʿ, which means consensus, jamʿ refers to mere collection, gathering or grouping. In other words, if ijmāʿ is grounded in reason, indicates a choice between two opposites, and represents a reified construction, jamʿ, on the contrary, avoids reason, (con) fuses opposites, and survives on ambiguity. Jamʿ neither dialectically integrates opposites, nor post-modernly juxtaposes them as collage. The secret of jamʿ is an epistemology of truth that is never complete, and always mixed with falsehood. This epistemology is rooted in Islamic theology, where the Truth is …

The Rattling Chains Of Race: Tying Together History, Alexander Rawson
The Rattling Chains Of Race: Tying Together History, Alexander Rawson
JCCC Honors Journal
Race in America has historically been a crucial point throughout, From the cruelty of Slavery to the terror of Jim Crow. The social reality of race is often looked at from a single point or time period, but it may be better to see it from a holistic perspective. Sociologically, racism has evolved and changed in history. While many people would like to say that this is merely a chapter that can finally be put to rest, the conflict of black and whites is still present in ever more covert and overt ways. The story of Racism is controlling, dominating …

Factors That Support Indigenous Involvement In Multi-Actor Environmental Stewardship, Nicholas J. Reo, Kyle P. Whyte, Deborah Mcgregor, Ma (Peggy) Smith, James F. Jenkins
Articles & Book Chapters
Regional, multi-actor environmental collaborations bring together diverse parties to achieve environmental protection and stewardship outcomes. Involving a range of participants helps involve alternative forms of knowledge, expertise, and perspectives; it may also present greater challenges in reaching agreements, particularly when both Indigenous and non-Indigenous parties are involved. The authors conduct a cross-case study of 39 regional partnerships involving Indigenous nations from the Great Lakes basin of North America with the aim of determining the factors that enable Indigenous partners to remain engaged in multi-actor collaborations. Six characteristics influenced Indigenous nations’ willingness to remain engaged: respect for Indigenous knowledges, control of …
