Southeast Asian American Community: Improving Students Literacy Performance Through The Involvement Of The After School Literacy Enrichment Program, Kalia Lee
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations
This research was influenced by the Author’s personal experience with literacy practices and education. The question addressed in this capstone is, how to improve third grade literacy performance through the involvement of the After-School Literacy Enrichment Program? The capstone explores a sense of encouraging positive behavior, self-esteem, and motivation with our culturally diverse students as well as connecting with our students on a genuine level. The capstone cover the history of the two Southeast Asian groups; Hmong and Karen/Karenni leading onto the disparities and challenges in the United States. By providing a culturally responsive classroom as well as becoming a …

An Integrated Social Studies And Writing Curriculum Guide For Primary Grade English Language Learners, Gayle E. Hammer
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations
Two guiding questions are addressed in this project. The first is: How can primary teachers of English Language Learners (ELLs) use a Comprehensive Curriculum Integration Guide (CCIG) to integrate the teaching of social studies content and standards with ELD? The second questions: How can using Student Learning Experiences for Engagement (SLEE) provide support for English Language Development (ELD) in the domains of speaking and writing for ELLs in the primary grades? It provides the research and rationale for creating a guide, which includes instructions, templates and resources for unit planning, weekly lesson planning, SLEE and suggested scaffolds and supports for …

Over the course of fifteen weeks, fourteen students and two professors explored the Criminal Justice System and the immense challenges faced by citizens as they attempt to reintegrate into their communities after being incarcerated. Through the lens of Systems Thinking, a system pioneered and described by Peter Senge, we dissected seemingly unrelated experiences to identify behaviors and patterns that have been intrinsic in the Criminal Justice System since “tough on crime” policies emerged into the early 1970’s. During this time, criminal justice and public opinion moved from a more rehabilitative stance to one of punishment and punitive vengeance on those …

Over the past two decades, the development of methods for visualizing and analysing specimens digitally, in three and even four dimensions, has transformed the study of living and fossil organisms. However, the initial promise that the widespread application of such methods would facilitate access to the underlying digital data has not been fully achieved. The underlying datasets for many published studies are not readily or freely available, introducing a barrier to verification and reproducibility, and the reuse of data. There is no current agreement or policy on the amount and type of data that should be made available alongside studies …
The Convergence Of Schenkerian Music Theory And Generative Linguistics: An Analysis And Composition, Michael A. Ciaramella
The Convergence Of Schenkerian Music Theory And Generative Linguistics: An Analysis And Composition, Michael A. Ciaramella
College Honors Program
This thesis engages a purported connection between Schenkerian music theory and the Minimalist Program within generative linguistics both scientifically and creatively. The first chapter expounds the link between Schenkerian theory and the Minimalist Program which has been recently substantiated in a doctoral dissertation by Somangshu Mukherji at Princeton University and details the methodological framework for investigating musical structures within this paradigm. Chapter two presents three case studies including the opening phrase of Mozart’s K. 332 Mvt. 1 piano sonata, and the tunes “Georgia on My Mind” and “Blue Bossa” in order to exemplify the aforementioned methodology and provide scientific evidence …
A Critical Analysis Of Grand Corruption With Reference To International Human Rights And International Criminal Law: The Case Of Nigeria, Florence Anaedozie
A Critical Analysis Of Grand Corruption With Reference To International Human Rights And International Criminal Law: The Case Of Nigeria, Florence Anaedozie
Doctoral
Grand corruption remains a domestic crime that is not directly addressed by the international human rights and international criminal law regulatory frameworks. Scholars argue that the right to a society free of corruption is an inherent human right because dignity, equality and participation significantly depend upon it. The academic discourse linking corruption to the violation of human rights is relatively new, no regional or global human rights instrument has referred specifically to corruption while anti-corruption treaties rarely refer to human rights. There is also insufficient research within this area, establishing the direct causal link between high-level corruption and systemic human …

The Use And Abuse Of Police Powers And Extrajudicial Killings In Nigeria, Emmanuel U. M. Igbo
The Use And Abuse Of Police Powers And Extrajudicial Killings In Nigeria, Emmanuel U. M. Igbo
African Journal of Criminology and Justice Studies
The paper examines the use and abuse of police powers in Nigeria, with emphasis on extrajudicial killing. It argues that extrajudicial killing is the most serious abuse of power and violation of victims’ rights to life and fair hearing. Using four typical case studies of live events from Nigerian newspapers, the paper shows that the police in Nigeria not only adopt the doctrine of maximum force in crime control, they often kill suspects and non-suspects at the flimsiest excuse because of an institutionalized culture of impunity. This culture of impunity is derived largely from Government’s authorization of a policy of …

Paese Di Accoglienza: Il Successo Di Un Modello Innovativo Di Accoglienza Dei Richiedenti Asilo In Italia, Isabela Arena Secanechia
Senior Capstone Theses
This work discusses Italy's migrant reception system including its flaws and their effects. Furthermore, this work explores an alternative, sustainable model of migrant reception created in Riace, Calabria, that has been successful in varying towns across Italy. Ultimately, this work argues that this system, which is beneficial to both Italians and incoming migrants — specifically asylum seekers — can and should be implemented nationally to counter the current flawed system.

This study is part of the IN.MIGRA-2 CM project, which studies the sociolinguistic integration of the immigrant population of Madrid. The present study focuses on the language attitudes of 16 residents of Alcalá de Henares, a community of Madrid. The participants were asked to rate their level of agreement with the following affirmations: (1) The Spanish of Madrid is more correct than the forms of speech of Latin American immigrants; (2) Mastery of the Spanish language is the principal demonstration of the integration of immigrants; (3) Immigrants of Latin American origin are integrated because they speak the same language. Burial Plots: Finding Theatre In The Thanatology Of Colonial North Coast Peru, Connie Ericksen
Burial Plots: Finding Theatre In The Thanatology Of Colonial North Coast Peru, Connie Ericksen
Theses and Dissertations
Spain's invasion of the Andes initiated a social drama unprecedented in the experience of the Andean natives. Spanish and Spanish-conscripted native chroniclers wrote extensively about Inca pageantry, spectacle, and ritual, and hastily attributed pagan belief to performances they witnessed or heard about. With equal haste, the Spanish appropriated performance as means of introducing and enforcing Christianity. In this thesis, I treat performance as the central feature of Andean Colonial transition. Performance may be viewed as an ephemeral feature of the Andean transition but fortunately, in mortuary performances (dealing with death and treatment of the body); there are many theatrical elements …
Using Online Grammar Lessons For Student Fluency In American Sign Language, Darby Campbell
Using Online Grammar Lessons For Student Fluency In American Sign Language, Darby Campbell
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
American Sign Language (ASL) is offered as a foreign language at many universities across the United States. Most research on ASL acquisition focuses on Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) children and first language (L1) acquisition. In this quantitative experimental study, a sample of undergraduate hearing students in intermediate ASL classes were given ASL grammar lessons that accompanied traditional language lessons. It was hypothesized that ASL students exposed to explicit written grammar lessons would show an increase in fluency. Participants were given a pre-test and post-test consisting of 20 English sentences and were asked to translate them into written ASL …

Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications
Water: The life force of all creation, the generative dynamism of existence. Long before scientific experimentation and quantifiable instrumentation verified the facts, human beings have perceived and understood water to be the essence of all life, both material and spiritual. From the beginnings of recorded history and even before, across the expanse of human settlement and migration, indigenous as well as extraneous religions and spiritual traditions have celebrated water as the primordial source: water was sacred before it was material and water took on for multitudes of generations until even today an expansive inclusivity that scanned the literal to the …

Land, Property And Sovereignty In International Law, Lorenzo Cotula
Land, Property And Sovereignty In International Law, Lorenzo Cotula
Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law
This article charts the relationship between land and international law. Tracing evolutions since the very origins of international legal ordering, the article identifies sovereignty and property as the two key concepts that have traditionally framed claims to land in international law. For centuries, international jurists primarily considered sovereignty and property claims in the context of changes in, and disputes over, territorial control. However, developments in international human rights, investment and environmental law have reconfigured the internal dimensions of the land-property-sovereignty.nexus, redefining space for states lawfully to exercise their sovereign powers vis-d-vis property within their jurisdiction.
Relevant international instruments advance diverse …

Challenging The Postwar Narrative: The Art And Agenda Of Boris Lurie, Kiersten Signe Remster
Challenging The Postwar Narrative: The Art And Agenda Of Boris Lurie, Kiersten Signe Remster
Honors Theses
Art history is shaped, studied, and taught based on narratives, artistic movements, and the biographies of celebrated artists. While contributing to an understanding of prevalent traditions and artists working in those traditions, these narratives are also constructions of inclusion and exclusion that establish art historical placement for certain artists while relegating others to historical obscurity. It is clear what happens to the critical fortunes of artists who are placed within these narratives. Yet what happens to the artists who do not fit within any of the categories established by these constructions? Are they then to be understood as simply minor …

How The Tā-Vā Theory Of Reality Constructs A Spatial Exposition Of Samoan Architecture, Albert L. Refiti
How The Tā-Vā Theory Of Reality Constructs A Spatial Exposition Of Samoan Architecture, Albert L. Refiti
Pacific Studies
This essay deals with a spatial exposition of Hufanga ʻOkusitino Māhina theory of tā-vā in which I argue that traditional Pacific concepts are recharged and extended by Māhina to create a new branch in Pacific Thought. I show that there is a consistency in the tā-vā theory of reality if one were to diagram its main tenets and, by doing so, enables the exposition of parts that sketch-out an overall form of theory. I also argue that doing theory is important to Pacific Thought because it allows for traditions and customs to be coiled-up into concepts allowing them to be …
