A Simulation Of Anthropogenic Mammoth Extinction, Matthew Klapman
A Simulation Of Anthropogenic Mammoth Extinction, Matthew Klapman
Undergraduate Honors Papers
There are multiple hypotheses as to why the Columbian Mammoth (Mammuthus columbi) and other megafauna in North America went extinct relatively recently and relatively quickly. The most popular of which are disease, climate change, meteorite strikes, and over hunting by humans [2, 9]. There is evidence to show that a combination of factors contributed to the megafaunal extinction, but ”overkill” explores the idea that early humans migrated onto the continent and then hunted the mammoths and other megafauna to extinction. The overkill hypothesis was first proposed by anthropologist Paul Martin in 1973 [8]. Evidence from radiocarbon dating shows that the …

Negating The Gender Citation Advantage In Political Science, Amy Atchison
Negating The Gender Citation Advantage In Political Science, Amy Atchison
Political Science and International Relations Faculty Publications
Open-access (OA) advocates have long promoted OA as an egalitarian alternative to traditional subscription-based academic publishing. The argument is simple: OA gives everyone access to high-quality research at no cost. In turn, this should benefit individual researchers by increasing the number of people reading and citing academic articles. As the OA movement gains traction in the academy, scholars are investing considerable research energy to determine whether there is an OA citation advantage—that is, does OA increase an article’s citation counts? Research indicates that it does. Scholars also explored patterns of gender bias in academic publishing and found that women are …

Racismo Y Lenguaje, Michele Back, Virgina Zavala
Faculty Published Works

Reaching For The Heart: An Analysis Of Language As A Weapon Of Empathy For Three Capetonians, Sarah Mcdonald
Reaching For The Heart: An Analysis Of Language As A Weapon Of Empathy For Three Capetonians, Sarah Mcdonald
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
In this paper, I examine the role that cross-cultural language study plays in the lives of three Capetonians in order to explore its capacity to foster empathy between people of different backgrounds. Framed in the context of South African history and modern academic discourse around language use in educational and public spaces in the country, I present the stories of my three interviewees and analyze particular experiences that they relayed in order to trace trends of empathy and understanding through their language use.
Through my discussion of this qualitative data, I reach the conclusion that language can be an effective …

Moving Forward By Looking Back Hunting/Gathering Societies And Models For The Future, Irene J. Dabrowski, Anthony L. Haynor
Moving Forward By Looking Back Hunting/Gathering Societies And Models For The Future, Irene J. Dabrowski, Anthony L. Haynor
Praxis Presentations
This paper reviews and assesses recent scholarship that focuses on the lessons that contemporary societies can learn from our hunting/gathering ancestors. The paper examines social organization for 99% of human history, with particular attention given to dominant “relational structures”: and modes of adaptation (cognitive, appreciative, moral, and technical) to the “physico-chemical, “organic,” and “telic” environments, on the institutional, symbolic, and self-identity levels. The paper then goes on to sketch fundamental relational and adaptive shifts as a result of the agricultural, industrial, digital revolutions, as well as scenarios for the emerging transhumanist age (involving the increasing merger of human and machine).

Religious And Cultural Foundation Of Reconciliation: The “Truth And Reconciliation Commission” In South Africa As A Suitable Model For Rwanda And Burundi, Egide Ndayisenga
Jesuit School of Theology Dissertations
The problem this thesis tackles is the difficult cohabitation between two ethnic groups found in Rwanda and in Burundi, namely Hutus and Tutsis. From the time of Independence, these two countries have known different tragedies, conflicts, lack of tolerance and exclusion of the other because of a gradual loss of deep cultural values that had sustained commonality and mutual respect for many years in both countries. The colonial rule and missionaries have contributed to the exacerbation of differences between Hutus and Tutsis by neglecting or erasing those values. Violations of human rights and genocidal acts that the history has recorded …
Perceptions Of Efficacy In Connecticut Social Studies Certification: An Analysis Of The #026 Social Studies Certification As It Relates To Sufficiency In Content Knowledge According To The Perceptions Of Department Chairpersons, Vincent A. Artese
EDL Sixth Year Theses
Content knowledge is important to the success of any teacher. A lack of content knowledge possessed by a teacher results in challenges for both teaching and learning. The purpose of this study was to analyze the perceptions of social studies department chairpersons throughout the state of Connecticut in regards to the #026 History/Social Studies 7-12 certification. The topics explored in the literature review of this paper comprise the importance of content knowledge, the sufficiency of social studies teacher preparation programs, and the benefits of content-based online professional development. The research questions asked included whether or not the #026 certification encompasses …
Accounting For Variability In Mother-Child Play, David F. Lancy
Accounting For Variability In Mother-Child Play, David F. Lancy
Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications
This paper highlights contrasting perspectives in the study of mother-child play. One contrast emerges as we look at the phenomenon using the lens offered by anthropology as opposed to the more commonly used lens of psychology. A second contrast is apparent from on-the-ground descriptions of childhood in the ethnographic record compared to observations of children in the upper strata of modern society. Psychologists and those public agents who adopt their perspective see mother-child play—from infancy—as both necessary for normal development and an unlimited good. Its self-evident value should be impressed upon those who are as yet, unenlightened. Anthropologists not only …

Marbles And Machiavelli: The Role Of Game Play In Children's Social Development, David F. Lancy, M. Annette Grove
Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications
The authors review several case studies of children engaged in rule-governed play and conclude that the process of learning rules—and of breaking them and making new ones—promotes what they call gamesmanship. They link the development of gamesmanship to the theory of Machiavellian intelligence, which considers social interaction primary in the evolution of human intelligence. They also question the benefits of adult-managed child play and assess the impact it may have on the ability of children to develop gamesmanship.
Self, Soul Loss, And Motorbikes In Modern Bali, Lucia Alexandrin
Self, Soul Loss, And Motorbikes In Modern Bali, Lucia Alexandrin
Award Winning Anthropology Papers
In this paper I argue that modernity has paradoxically led to a reinforcement of traditional Balinese ritual practices instead of its demise. Modernity in Bali has resulted in increased numbers of motorbikes on the roads and other factors which create dangerous driving conditions. Motorbike accidents, which can cause soul loss, are thus more likely to occur, causing Balinese people to more frequently seek out traditional practices as a way to remedy soul loss. Traditional rituals are also used to prevent motorbike accidents. Therefore, certain consequences of modernity reinforce traditional ritual and solidify Balinese conceptions of self.

Manual, a journal about art and its making. Give and Take. The eigth issue. Manual 8 (Give and Take) explores interaction, transaction, and social exchange and indebtedness.
"The earliest known use of the expression “give and take” can be traced to horse racing. It referred to races in which larger, stronger horses carried more weight, and smaller ones, less. Implied therein is an accounting for relative capacities. In such a race, the goal remains the same—crossing the finish line first—but introducing this variable highlights the relationship between the competing horses. A win is only meaningful if each horse can be …
