The People's Whisperers: A Comparative Discourse Analysis Of Donald Trump's And Silvio Berlusconi's Campaign Speeches, Andrea Bolinaga Assunto
The People's Whisperers: A Comparative Discourse Analysis Of Donald Trump's And Silvio Berlusconi's Campaign Speeches, Andrea Bolinaga Assunto
Open Access Theses
A new wave of populism is hitting the world. New political profiles are emerging to international politics. This case study develops a comparative discourse analysis of Italy’s Primer Minister Silvio Berlusconi and United States’ President Donald Trump during their first campaign as politicians. This comparison confirms the media outlets’ theory that both candidates are almost the same, at least when it comes to their populist speeches. To understand these outsiders of politics, two speeches per candidate were analyzed through three different discourse analysis methods. Despite the fact that each candidate came from different contexts, the study showed that they both …
The Benefits Of Swir Imagery For Archaeological Landscape Analysis: A Case Study From Easter Island (Rapa Nui), Chile, Dylan Davis, Carl Lipo
The Benefits Of Swir Imagery For Archaeological Landscape Analysis: A Case Study From Easter Island (Rapa Nui), Chile, Dylan Davis, Carl Lipo
Research Days Posters 2016-2019
"The use of multispectral imagery is particularly effective for mapping the archaeological record of Rapa Nui (Easter Island) due to the island’s lack of vegetation and exposed surficial lithic features. In 2010, Flaws demonstrated that near-infrared (NIR) imagery can be used to identify “lithic mulch” gardens, areas of cultivation that are enhanced through the prehistoric addition of broken bedrock. Here, we evaluate newly available, high-resolution short-wave infrared (SWIR) imagery for its potential to provide additional resolution and discrimination in mapping “lithic mulch” features."
Resource Scarcity And Monumental Architecture: Cost Signaling On Rapa Nui (Easter Island), Chile, Dylan Davis, Carl P. Lipo
Resource Scarcity And Monumental Architecture: Cost Signaling On Rapa Nui (Easter Island), Chile, Dylan Davis, Carl P. Lipo
Research Days Posters 2016-2019
Costly signaling theory (CST) explains a variety of elaborate behavioral displays as a consequence of competition over resources when the risk of direct conflict is high. Within an archaeological context, monumental architecture is potentially explained as a facet of costly signaling between individuals and groups. On Rapa Nui, CST offers an explanation for the construction of labor-intensive monuments including massive statues (moai) and ceremonial platforms (ahu). Using hypotheses derived from CST and spatial data about the distribution of archaeological features, the degree to which CST accounts for the investment in prehistoric monumental architecture on Rapu Nui is evaluated.
Paralyzed Traditions: European Influence On Global Dance, Katie Mcmorris
Paralyzed Traditions: European Influence On Global Dance, Katie Mcmorris
16th Annual Celebration of Undergraduate Research and Creative Performance (2017)
Although separated by cultural differences, language barriers, and geographic divides, many global dances share similarities in their purpose, style, and movement. Through a cross-examination of different cultural and global dances, one can recognize the innate human similarities that exist within dance as an art form. However, beyond these similarities, one more aspect remains the same among these dances from all over the world: through European influence, many global dances were degraded and therefore disassociated from their revered origins. As Europeans colonized places such as Hawaii, India, and Brazil, they viewed the traditional dances with disdain and fostered a continuous misperception …

The Tsimane Health And Life History Project: Integrating Anthropology And Biomedicine, Michael Gurven, Jonathan Stieglitz, Benjamin C. Trumble, Aaron D. Blackwell, Bret Beheim, Helen Davis, Hillard Kaplan, Paul L. Hooper
ESI Publications
The Tsimane Health and Life History Project, an integrated bio-behavioral study of the human life course, is designed to test competing hypotheses of human life-history evolution. One aim is to understand the bidirectional connections between life history and social behavior in a highfertility, kin-based context lacking amenities of modern urban life (e.g. sanitation, banks, electricity). Another aim is to understand how a high pathogen burden influences health and well-being during development and adulthood. A third aim addresses how modernization shapes human life histories and sociality. Here we outline the project’s goals, history, and main findings since its inception in 2002. …

Online Information Literacy Module For Freshman Composition Students, Paige J. Dhyne
Honors Projects
The purpose of this Open Access Information Literacy module is to provide students with an interactive, online question-and-answer module to teach the basic fundamentals of information literacy and its uses as defined by the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education. This module’s audience is a first-year/ freshman writing or composition student, but research has shown there is a lack of information literacy among all levels of college education. The need for information literacy and library classroom instruction at the collegiate level has grown significantly in response to the exponential growth of …
Legalization Of Gay Marriage And Its Impact On Military Stereotypes Of Homosexuals, Jasmine Moore
Legalization Of Gay Marriage And Its Impact On Military Stereotypes Of Homosexuals, Jasmine Moore
Celebration of Undergraduate & Graduate Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activities Materials
Homosexuality has become a popular research topic in a variety of professional fields, and over the last decade has become a priority for the military. Since the implementation of the law repealing Don't Ask Don't Tell (DADT) researchers have questioned what effects repealing this law has had on the military as a whole. Particular attention has been spent on studying the attitudes and stereotypes about homosexuals after DADT was repealed. However, there is a lack of research examining how marriage equality affects society's stereotypes about homosexuals serving in the United States military.
It was hypothesized that participants that have personal …

How To Plan, Budget, Write, And Implement A Student Sustainability Grant, Annalisa Wilder
Honors Theses
The Student Sustainability Grant program was created to give students valuable grant writing experience and to promote a culture of sustainability on Western Michigan University’s campus. Despite the enormous opportunity that this program provides, few students apply for the grants with their sustainable ideas. Even fewer students are able to fully complete the projects, research, and initiatives that receive funding. In order to help increase the number of grants that are fully implemented and to provide students interested in writing a grant with a useful resource, this guide was created. This ‘how-to manual’ provides an undergraduate student’s perspective on the …

Mother Goddesses And Subversive Witches: Competing Narratives Of Gender Essentialism, Heteronormativity, Feminism, And Queerness In Wiccan Theology And Ritual, Carly B. Floyd
Honors Projects
Wicca has typically been viewed as an empowering alternative to institutionalized and patriarchal religions, and women especially have been drawn to this religion because of its inclusion of women as goddesses and priestesses. It is also seen as a sex-positive religion, and many LGBTQ+ people embrace Wicca due to its lack of concepts such as sin and shame, especially around sex and sexuality. This research, however, troubles the claim that Wicca is a feminist, woman-friendly, queer-friendly religion. While women are celebrated and valued, I argue that women’s positive portrayal as mothers, nurturers, emotional, and intuitive portrays women’s nature in a …

Identifying Corners Stores As The Future Of Healthy Food Access In African American Communities, Victor Romano, Jennifer Lee, Elliott Royal, Katherine Metzo, William Ruth, Theodore Hartsook
Identifying Corners Stores As The Future Of Healthy Food Access In African American Communities, Victor Romano, Jennifer Lee, Elliott Royal, Katherine Metzo, William Ruth, Theodore Hartsook
Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice
For many people, the corner store remains the main grocer, or the only source of sustenance in minority communities. This study examined the distribution of corner stores as a future reference point to provide healthy food access to predominantly African American communities that lack full service grocery stores. Business data was obtained from respective county by use of Standard Industrial Codes. Each corner store was then categorized by either being Full Service (Stores that sell fresh produce, fresh meat, fresh dairy, and processed foods) or Non-Full Service (stores that do not sell all four categories of foods included in the …

Chinese American Immigrant Breast Cancer Survivors And Their Experiences With Post-Treatment Care, Tara Eaton Phd, Kristin Bright Phd, Xin Zeng Mph, Hayley S. Thompson Phd
Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice
This study examined the experiences of Chinese American immigrant breast cancer survivors with post-treatment breast cancer care and surveillance in New York City. As part of a mixed methods approach, in-depth interviews were conducted with 11 Chinese American immigrant breast cancer survivors treated in a public hospital setting regarding their final breast cancer treatment visit, perceived risk of breast cancer recurrence, and experiences with social and family networks following the completion of treatment. Several salient and shared themes emerged from the interviews including two areas of particular concern regarding the transition from the treatment to post-treatment setting: survivors’ lack of …
Subjective Retelling: The Influence Of External And Individual Factors On The Folktales Of The Brothers Grimm, Katherine R. Woodhouse
Subjective Retelling: The Influence Of External And Individual Factors On The Folktales Of The Brothers Grimm, Katherine R. Woodhouse
Young Historians Conference
Since a first edition of Children’s and Household Tales was published in 1812, the work of Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm has been read, told, watched, and referenced all over the world. When the Grimms initially set out to construct the famous anthology, they intended to objectively uncover a breadth of traditional German folktales, preserving them in their purest possible forms. These stories, the brothers believed, held the essence of the nation’s declining culture and collective identity. However, the assumption that the stories of Children’s and Household Tales holistically represent the genuine German history and dialogue of oral storytelling is inaccurate. …
