Do Non-Human Primates Have Gender?, Aaron Pelchat May 2017

Do Non-Human Primates Have Gender?, Aaron Pelchat

Senior Honors Projects

As activism for trans rights and gender equality becomes ever more prevalent in the current American political discourse, so too has there been a rise in questions about gender. Are sexuality and gender linked? Aren’t there only two genders? What is the difference between gender and sex? Is there a difference? How does one DO gender? Isn’t gender just something you are born with? Helping the public understand these questions is important to transgender and gender non-conforming individuals in a time when more people are “coming out of the closet” and identifying as genders other than cisgender. As an anthropologist, …

Now Presenting: Uri Theatre, Allyson Schiller May 2017

Now Presenting: Uri Theatre, Allyson Schiller

Senior Honors Projects

Honors Project Abstract

In my years as a theatre student and practitioner, I have learned that the most creative people aren’t necessarily found center stage. For every actor taking a bow, there are numerous support staff who created the production that will bring actors acclaim. Without an audience, the work of these artists will remain unseen and unappreciated. Therefore, those who promote the performances are certainly an integral part of the theatrical process. Often referred to as “show business”, the ticket sales and revenue are essential to the health and well being of any theatrical organization. URI Theatre, like any …

Progressive Education In Appalachia: East Tennessee State Normal School And Appalachian State Normal School, Holly Heacock May 2017

Progressive Education In Appalachia: East Tennessee State Normal School And Appalachian State Normal School, Holly Heacock

Undergraduate Honors Theses

In this thesis, I am examining how East Tennessee State Normal School in East Tennessee and Appalachian State Normal School in Western North Carolina interpreted progressive education differently in their states. This difference is that East Tennessee State began as a state funded school to educate future teachers therefore their school and their curriculum was more rounded and set to a structured schedule. Appalachian State Normal School was initially founded to educate the uneducated in the “lost provinces” therefore, curriculum was even more progressive than East Tennessee State’s – based strongly on the practices of farming, woodworking, and other practical …

Why Are We Fascinated With Violence? An Investigation Of Mass Media’S Role In Depicting Violence As Entertainment., Kseniya I. Dmitrieva May 2017

Why Are We Fascinated With Violence? An Investigation Of Mass Media’S Role In Depicting Violence As Entertainment., Kseniya I. Dmitrieva

Senior Honors Projects

A literature review was conducted to determine the most common patterns in violence- related topics portrayed in mass media. Psychological research suggests that violence is a by-product of society: as a learned behavior, violence and aggression are experienced through modeling by adults, peers, and outside sources. With the vast emergence of mass media in the 20th and 21st centuries, mass media channels have been branded “responsible” for the formation of aggressive behaviors in children and young adults. The relationship between publications of violent events in mass media and viewers’ role is far more complicated. Mass media is a common way …

Perceptions Of Diversity Among Uri Undergraduate Students: An Ethnographic Study, Emily Pitek May 2017

Perceptions Of Diversity Among Uri Undergraduate Students: An Ethnographic Study, Emily Pitek

Senior Honors Projects

This ethnographic research project explored URI student experiences and perceptions of cultural and racial diversity on campus. Given the URI’s office of Community, Equity, and Diversity’s explicit goal “to create an inclusive and supportive environment where each individual can thrive”, my goal was to understand how students, in their own words, understood, experienced, and described diversity in their daily lives across campus. Data was gathered using the methods of participant-observation, visual documentation, semi-structured interviews, and on-line surveys. A grounded theory approach was applied to the data analysis, which allowed me to generate and discover theory that emerged from the data …

Soul Simplicity: An Inquiry Into Dance, Women And Islam, Mariam T. Odetunde May 2017

Soul Simplicity: An Inquiry Into Dance, Women And Islam, Mariam T. Odetunde

Senior Honors Projects

Islam has guidelines and rules that its followers must abide by in order to fulfill the tenets of the religion. Lawful acts are labeled “al-halal” and the unlawful and prohibited are “al-haram.” Many al-haram activities affect Muslim women specifically – particularly some leisure activities, such as listening to music and dancing. For example, Islam does not permit activities that can be perceived as “erotic” or “arousing male passions.” Elder Muslim women guide and supervise younger women in order to pass along religious morals and values from generation to generation. I am the product of this tradition and my research is …

Violence Against Central American Unaccompanied Minors: From Home To United States Border, Katherine A. Owens

Senior Honors Projects

In the past four years, there has been a significant increase in apprehensions of unaccompanied minors from El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras at the Southwest Border of the United States: an estimated 207,000 since 2013. This paper researches the sexual and physical abuse the minors (aged 5 to 17) are subjected to while in their home country, on their journey north and upon arrival at the United States border. Data was collected through a literature review of federal investigations of human trafficking in Central America, Mexico, and Texas, along with federal publications on border apprehensions and unaccompanied minors. United Nations …

Does Personality Similarity In Bottlenose Dolphin Pairs Influence Dyadic Bond Characteristics?, Kelsey R. Moreno May 2017

Does Personality Similarity In Bottlenose Dolphin Pairs Influence Dyadic Bond Characteristics?, Kelsey R. Moreno

Master's Theses

Social structures are critical to the success of many species and have repercussions on health, well-being, and adaptation, yet little is known about the factors which shape these structures aside from ecology and life history strategies. Dyadic bonds are the basis of all social structures; however, mechanisms for formations of specific bonds or patterns in which individuals form which types of bonds have yet to be demonstrated. There is a variety of evidence indicating personality may be a factor in shaping bonds, but this relationship has not been explored with respect to bond components and is yet to be demonstrated …

Irrational In Its Rationality: A Critique Of The All Lives Matter Movement And One-Dimensional Society, Elliot Newell May 2017

Irrational In Its Rationality: A Critique Of The All Lives Matter Movement And One-Dimensional Society, Elliot Newell

Honors Theses

In his book One-Dimensional Man, Herbert Marcuse argues that modern society has lost the ability to critique itself. Contradictions are hidden through manipulative language and protest is suppressed. As a result, Marcuse asserts that our society has become rational in its irrationality, so that contradictions appear logical and even beneficial. Though published in 1964, Marcuse's theory is still relevant today, and is seen in the All Lives Matter movement. As a response to Black Lives Matter, All Lives Matter makes the seemingly rational claim that everyone in America is valued equally, and that racial prejudice is a thing of the …

The Implications Of A University Of Louisville First Year Experience Course On Student Success Outcomes Based On Race And Gender., Nadine C. Petty May 2017

The Implications Of A University Of Louisville First Year Experience Course On Student Success Outcomes Based On Race And Gender., Nadine C. Petty

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Extant research has shown that across U.S. institutions, the first and second years of college are the most precarious because of high attrition rates. To address this, many colleges and universities implement First Year Experience (FYE) interventions with hopes of increasing first year GPA, retention rates, and overall college success. Over 90% of colleges and universities either offer or make these FYE interventions mandatory for their first-year/first-time freshmen. There is a large body of research regarding the association of FYE interventions and student outcomes, but the findings are mixed. Extant literature also does little to focus on FYE student outcomes …

The Plight Of Undocumented Female Migrants: Identifying Structural Factors That Contribute To The Proliferation Of Sex Trafficking And The Failings Of International Law, Hannah K. Valles May 2017

The Plight Of Undocumented Female Migrants: Identifying Structural Factors That Contribute To The Proliferation Of Sex Trafficking And The Failings Of International Law, Hannah K. Valles

International and Global Studies Undergraduate Honors Theses

The aim of this thesis is to investigate the conditions at two specific border zones, the United States-Mexico border and the Mexico-Guatemalan border, that render undocumented female migrants vulnerable to abduction or recruitment into sexual exploitation. In addition to exploring the factors that expose women to trafficking networks, the study scrutinizes the legal failings of the international law-making community with regards to the safeguarding of women whose socio-economic conditions and environment of perpetual violence prompt their extralegal international movement. The paper provides an overview of the social, economic, and historical factors that underpin the flourishing of sex trafficking operations in …

Remote Sensing Insights Into Storage Capacities Among Plains Village Horticulturalists, Adam Wiewel May 2017

Remote Sensing Insights Into Storage Capacities Among Plains Village Horticulturalists, Adam Wiewel

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Maize was a fundamental component of the diet and economy of Middle Missouri Plains Village groups, sedentary farmers with settlements along the Missouri River during the last millennia. More than a century of study has contributed to our understanding of agricultural production among these peoples, but little effort has been made to consider temporal variation in production. Such an understanding is crucial to examining changes that occurred before and after the arrival of colonists and their trade goods in the seventeenth century. Plains archaeologists have suggested that the storage capacity of Middle Missouri villages increased during the sixteenth through the …

A Text Analysis Of Bound Morphemes In K-12 Science Texts And The Implications Of Bound Morphemes For English Language Learners’ Reading Comprehension, Matthew Koch May 2017

A Text Analysis Of Bound Morphemes In K-12 Science Texts And The Implications Of Bound Morphemes For English Language Learners’ Reading Comprehension, Matthew Koch

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the frequency of bound morphemes in science texts used in K-12 classrooms. The motivating factor for this capstone was to better understand why so many students struggle with the increased demands of academic language and unfamiliar vocabulary in science texts. Bound morphemes were chosen as the focal point because they appear frequently in academic language. A familiarity with bound morpheme structures helps readers to access unfamiliar words, which aids in reading comprehension (Kieffer & Leasaux, 2008). A quantitative research method was used and a random sampling of science books, one from each …

"It Is No Miracle": A Methodological Discussion Of Medieval Natural Medicine And Early Modern European Corpse Medicine, Adam Lubbers May 2017

"It Is No Miracle": A Methodological Discussion Of Medieval Natural Medicine And Early Modern European Corpse Medicine, Adam Lubbers

Honors College

This paper will challenge the current historic methodology used by historians when examining Early Modern European corpse medicine. The history has been interpreted with a structuralist methodology within a framework of cannibalism, which has created anachronism. This paper will argue that Early Modern European corpse medicine needs to be viewed within the framework of natural medicine that began with medieval alchemy and astrology. The very brief history of alchemy and astrology will be explored in this paper, which will be compared with the pharmacopeias of Early Modern Europe and the philosophical tracts of prominent medicinal cannibal physicians Paracelsus and Jean …

Andrew Lang: A World We Have Lost, William Donaldson

Studies in Scottish Literature

Discusses the career and wide-ranging accomplishments of the Scottish essayist, poet and critic Andrew Lang (1844-1912), author of Myth, Ritual and Religion (2 vols., 1887), arguing that Lang was "an original thinker with a powerful oppositional streak;" reviews his significance for late Victorian anthropology and the studies of religions (including psychical research), and on his work as a translator and classicist, reviewer, ballad scholar, biographer, and Scottish historian, as well as his contribution to children's literature; includes an assessment of a new 2-volume selection of Lang's writing; and concludes that Lang's "virtuosic range" and "slashing keenness of intellect" "contributed significantly …

Laterality Preferences Completing A Tool-Use Task In Asian Small-Clawed Otters (Aonyx Cinereus), Stephanie E. James May 2017

Laterality Preferences Completing A Tool-Use Task In Asian Small-Clawed Otters (Aonyx Cinereus), Stephanie E. James

Honors Theses

Laterality is defined as the occurrence of each cerebral hemisphere having asymmetric control over the different sides of the body, leading to preferences to use one side of the body over the other for various behaviors. Many types of laterality exist, but handedness is the form that is most predominantly assessed. Handedness in animals is of special interest to laterality researchers, as humans were once thought to be the only species that exhibited lateralized hand preferences. The aim of the current study was to determine if Asian small-clawed otters exhibit significant paw preferences in behaviors associated with completing a tool-use …

Spangle Lakes: An Investigation Of Late Archaic Human Land-Use Within The Sawtooth Mountains, Kaitlyn Mansfield May 2017

Spangle Lakes: An Investigation Of Late Archaic Human Land-Use Within The Sawtooth Mountains, Kaitlyn Mansfield

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Recent high altitude archaeological research has provided evidence for seasonal utilization of high mountain landscapes during the Late Archaic era. Sites in the Western United States display varying patterns of land use suggesting that during the Late Archaic, mountain landscapes were used differently based upon unique environmental conditions. Hypotheses about land-use in the Spangle Lakes area of the Sawtooth Mountains, Idaho, were compiled from regional Late Archaic high elevation sites, regional ethnographic data, and a Binfordian database that utilizes environmental and ethnographic measurements to develop projections on hunter-gatherer behavior. Through a reinvestigation of the Spangle Lakes area, it was determined …

Symbolic Versus Sustainable: Tracking The Apparel Industry’S Response To Crisis Over Time, Sadell R. Crabb May 2017

Symbolic Versus Sustainable: Tracking The Apparel Industry’S Response To Crisis Over Time, Sadell R. Crabb

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In this study I investigate the impact different director types have on firm commitments to voluntary labor regulation. Using an author-constructed dataset of eight focal firm’s boards of directors for a nineteen-year period, I examine the impacts of gender and racial diversity, as well as the inclusion of independent interlocking board members on firm commitments to voluntary labor regulation following a legitimacy crisis in the 1990s. Framing firms’ responses within a chronological approach to institutional theory, I test how trends for these three director types varied for firms most and least committed to voluntary labor regulation, as well as for …

Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation

Cook, Timios E. “Ad Gloriam Dei: Humanism and Theology in David Chytraeus’ Regulae Studiorum.” Ph.D. diss., Concordia Seminary, 2017. 296 pp.

Luther theologian David Chytraeus (1530–1600) devoted much of his career to education, serving especially at the University of Rostock. While today is he is often remembered for his contributions to the Formula of Concord, in his own time he was highly regarded as an educator and was sought out beyond Rostock to design and implement curriculum reforms. Chytraeus was a student of Melanchthon and built both upon and beyond his mentor’s insights throughout his pedagogical works. This dissertation explores …

“A Theoretical Model For Critical Geographies Of Gentrification: A Comparative Analysis Of Globalization In Two Gay Villages”, Spencer Nelson May 2017

“A Theoretical Model For Critical Geographies Of Gentrification: A Comparative Analysis Of Globalization In Two Gay Villages”, Spencer Nelson

Geography Honors Projects

Abstract: The role of gay villages in gentrification has long been contemplated yet their relationship to the global circulation of capital is understudied. This thesis sheds light on this phenomenon through an urban political ecology of gentrification and provides a new model of critical geographies of gentrification. The model is illustrated through ethnographic research in the two gay villages of De Waterkant in Cape Town, South Africa, and Loring Park in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The relationship between gentrification and globalization is analyzed through the four lenses that bring flows of financial capital, culture, technology, and ideology into focus and offers a …

On The Cover Of The Rollin’ Stone: How Rolling Stone Magazine Frames Politics And News, Ashley Anne Walter

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Rolling Stone magazine is a significant artifact spanning throughout American pop culture; yet it has fought to be considered a legitimate news source in American media. This thesis study examines how Rolling Stone frames news and politics, and how the magazine portrays itself as being political, through its front covers. Research has shown that magazine covers “communicate,” “visually summarize” and work “as an advertisement to attract customers” (Kang & Heo, 2013). The purpose of this study is to understand how Rolling Stone presents itself as a legitimate news source and how the covers convey the publication’s identity. A mixed-methods …

A Portrait Of Work And Ohs Among 15-Year-Olds In Québec, Élise Ledoux, Pascale Prud'homme May 2017

A Portrait Of Work And Ohs Among 15-Year-Olds In Québec, Élise Ledoux, Pascale Prud'homme

Portraits statistiques
