The Spatial Ordering Of Nabataea: An Integrated Analysis Of The Geography, Architecture, And Morphology Of Nabataean Petra, Christopher Clifton Angel May 2017

The Spatial Ordering Of Nabataea: An Integrated Analysis Of The Geography, Architecture, And Morphology Of Nabataean Petra, Christopher Clifton Angel

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Nabataean city of Petra is well known for its sandstone architecture and rock-hewn funerary landscape. Over the last few decades, numerous studies examined their history, culture, art, and architecture. The few studies that assessed the urban space of Petra focused on the functional properties of individual architectural forms and their nominal placement within the overall landscape. This study focused on the spatial configurations of architecture as relational to the dynamics of Nabataean politics and ritual where shifts in social order manifested similar shifts in spatial order which in turn produced and reproduced forms of social order. The production of …

On Space Program Planning: Quantifying The Effects Of Spacefaring Goals And Strategies On The Solution Space Of Feasible Programs, Mark Douglas Coley May 2017

On Space Program Planning: Quantifying The Effects Of Spacefaring Goals And Strategies On The Solution Space Of Feasible Programs, Mark Douglas Coley

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dissertations - Archive

An organization's space program represents the coalescence of top-level goals and strategies with the specific, lower-level combinations of mission architectures, hardware, and technology. High costs and long lead times necessitate substantial planning and key decisions to be made years, possibly decades, in advance. Unfortunately, the methods and processes available for planning have historically been unable to provide decision-makers with objective, quantitative information from both the top and lower levels of the space program. Instead, decision-makers are forced to turn to top-level, qualitative assessments, disconnected from any of the fundamental, technical details, where inconsistent comparisons and secondary effects often become the …

Factors Impacting Retention Among African American Students At Mississippi State University, Ariel Johnson May 2017

Factors Impacting Retention Among African American Students At Mississippi State University, Ariel Johnson

Honors Theses

African American retention is low at the college level, especially at Predominantly White Institutions. Factors such as resources, support systems, aggressions, and racism impact African American enrollment and graduation. Mississippi State University has low enrollment and retention rates for African American students, despite programs in place to increase these rates. This research uses anthropological methods to explore the experiences and knowledge of resources among African American students at Mississippi State University. Results indicate that the programs meant to combat low retention rates are ranked low and not widely known by participants. Understanding this will help increase effectiveness of retention programs …

The Economic, Health, And Psychological Effects Of The Israeli-Palestinian Conflict, Ilana Siegal May 2017

The Economic, Health, And Psychological Effects Of The Israeli-Palestinian Conflict, Ilana Siegal

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

This paper analyzes the economic, health, and psychological impacts of conflict and the effectiveness of United Nations agencies and organizations in addressing these issues. I use the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as a case study, representing intractable conflicts due to disagreements regarding land, religion, politics, and ethnicity. Focusing on the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), I argue that the effectiveness of WHO and UNRWA programs depends on the economic wellbeing, conflict status, and the level of funding at the time. However, the largest factor impacting the economy, health, and psyche of the Palestinians is …

Please Forget To Floss: Developing An Assay For Identifying Tuberculosis In Dental Calculus From The Smithsonian’S Huntington Collection (1893-1921), Soleil Young

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Tuberculosis is one of the most ubiquitous diseases in human history. Despite the long history of human interactions with the disease, tracking it retroactively is difficult because of its low rate of associated, diagnostic bony changes. Ancient DNA, also called aDNA, is a novel method for examining the presence of disease in the past. Currently, the only way to isolate tuberculosis aDNA is to drill and section bone, a method that is both invasive and expensive, limiting its use in the archaeological record. This capstone examines new ways of tracking and understanding tuberculosis in the past, utilizing the DNA trapped …

The Ecology Of Being, Wesley Nolan Mattingly May 2017

The Ecology Of Being, Wesley Nolan Mattingly

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Ours is a world unsettled by ecological catastrophe. From its scorched horizons, unsettled questions issue. Do we in our time have a sense for ecology? Nature? Have we truly understood its sense? This dissertation unearths the pre-theoretical simplicity, elemental ecstasy, and untold history of experience in search of answers – unthought by science yet copious to the senses. In it I develop a lived ontology of nature through the twofold ecological difference between: the sensible earth and world; the sentient flesh and body. Theoretically, this sense of ecology is an extension and enrichment of concepts sown by Martin Heidegger and …

Personality And Subjective Well-Being In Psittacines, Meghan Gresham

2017 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

Parrots are popular pets due to their complex social behavior, intelligence, and long lifespan. Many captive parrots develop abnormal behaviors, such as feather plucking, which may result in illness and surrender. This study investigates the link between personality traits, abnormal behavior, and subjective well-being (SWB) in four genera of parrots commonly kept as pets: Amazons (Amazona), African Greys (Psittacus), Cockatoos (Cacatua), and Macaws (Ara). Two volunteers, well acquainted with each parrot, collected data using an online survey. Principal component analysis of multiple personality traits, used in human Big-Five Factor research, revealed three parrot personality dimensions: Neuroticism, Extraversion, and Assertiveness. Many …

The Impact Of High School Extracurriculars: Similarities And Differences In Sense Of Community Among Competitive, Performance, And Participatory Activities, Erica M. Hawvermale

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Extant research links high sense of community in adolescence to adaptive outcomes such as enhanced motivation, self-efficacy, and coping ability (Battistich, Solomon, Watson, & Schaps, 1997; Vieno, Perkins, Smith, & Santinello, 2005; Henry & Slater, 2007), as well as reduced stress, anxiety, and depression (Chipuer, Bramston, & Pretty, 2002). In light of these findings, the present study was designed to assess the relationship between high school students’ participation in extracurricular activities and their perceptions of sense of community, enjoyment, and commitment, as well as the aspects of these organizations that help to facilitate feelings of community. Study 1 participants (N= …

The Inevitable Fusion: A Mixed-Methods Sociological Approach To Comprehensive Kodiak Bear Viewing Management, Jacqueline M. Keating May 2017

The Inevitable Fusion: A Mixed-Methods Sociological Approach To Comprehensive Kodiak Bear Viewing Management, Jacqueline M. Keating

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge is home to one of the highest concentrations of brown bears in Alaska. As the public demand for bear viewing opportunities continues to increase, managers are faced with the challenge of accommodating this new kind of visitor use on a refuge that was traditionally managed for the sustainable hunting of bears. To inform the public use management planning process, the Kodiak Refuge allocated funding to support social science research that objectively assessed the current nature of bear viewing opportunities and the factors that influence the quality of those opportunities. Ecologist Aldo Leopold claimed that the …

What It Means To Be A Global Campus: A Case Study Of Internationalization On The University Of Washington Campus, Catherine Rock May 2017

What It Means To Be A Global Campus: A Case Study Of Internationalization On The University Of Washington Campus, Catherine Rock

Capstone Collection

The following paper presents an analysis of internationalization on the University of Washington (UW) campus. The UW attracts students from all over the world each year while also sending students abroad for a quarter or two. The goals and purpose of gaining an international education, however, are not clear. As a result, key stakeholders are often left out of conversations surrounding international education because of a lack of communication and no centralized purpose. These ideas led to a series of research questions including: Should the UW have an official statement on internationalization and international education? What is the current state …

Islam In Saudi Arabia: The Homogeneous Portrayal And Heterogeneous Reality, John Rogeberg May 2017

Islam In Saudi Arabia: The Homogeneous Portrayal And Heterogeneous Reality, John Rogeberg

Masters Theses

The objective of this thesis is to apply commonly held statistics in the world of missiology regarding folk Islamic practices to the least likely country for such practices to be found, Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia is believed by most to be the birth-site of an austere, strict, orthodox form of Islam, responsible for the nature and nurture (education, promotion, and financing) of Islamic extremism. Conversely, I posit that through tracing the development of Wahhabism and its current global influence on Islam, its literalist interpretation becomes a profitable tool for the student of anthropology, missiology, and cross-cultural studies to gain a …

Rekindling The Role Of Affectivity In Ignatian Discernment Of Spirits In The Context Of Christian Life Communities In Darjeeling, India, S. John Kennedy May 2017

Rekindling The Role Of Affectivity In Ignatian Discernment Of Spirits In The Context Of Christian Life Communities In Darjeeling, India, S. John Kennedy

Jesuit School of Theology Dissertations

This thesis addresses and offers solutions to the issue of lack of affectivity in decision making among the Christian Life Community members in Darjeeling. The problem has been traced from their former religious practices of immediately appeasing spirits by offerings material things through village priests when the spirits interfere in their life. This practice has come down to instant decision making without out paying close attention to the consequences, as they would cease all activity to appease the spirits. To examine and resolve this issue, this thesis first presents the relationship between affectivity and discernment. Second, the thesis presents an …

Leaving Experiences Of Survivors Of Intimate Partner Violence In Emergency Shelter And Transitional Housing, Alicia Christine Hawley-Bernardez

Social Work Dissertations - Archive

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a pervasive public health problem across the United States disproportionately affecting women and children. IPV has four primary categories of violence: physical, sexual, stalking, and psychological aggression. This dissertation utilized an interpretative phenomenological as well as a directed content analysis approaches to better understand leaving experiences of survivors of IPV. The study consisted of semi-structured interviews with 19 survivors of IPV who had left an abusive relationship and were living in either an emergency shelter or transitional housing. Participants were recruited from several domestic violence agencies. Interpretative phenomenology served as the framework for understanding the …

Community Gardens As Instruments Of Group And Neighborhood Cohesion: A Mixed Methods Case Study, Howard Scott Clemens May 2017

Community Gardens As Instruments Of Group And Neighborhood Cohesion: A Mixed Methods Case Study, Howard Scott Clemens

Sociology & Anthropology Theses - Archive

A mixed methods case study, which investigated whether community gardens can foster a sense of community within its members and whether that engenders a deeper sense of community about the neighborhood. Using SEM-based path analysis on survey generated data, the hypothesis was tested that variables connected to cohesion and norms of healthy eating would influence a participant’s neighborhood psychological sense of community (NPSOC). Though an SEM model containing both paths yielded mixed results, two smaller sub-models separately representing the two paths of cohesion and norms of healthy eating were both found to be well-fitting, affirming the research question. The qualitative …

Chronotype, Class Times, And Academic Achievement Of University Students, Tristan Enright, Roberto Refinetti May 2017

Chronotype, Class Times, And Academic Achievement Of University Students, Tristan Enright, Roberto Refinetti

Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Numerous studies over the years have documented an effect of human chronotypes on physiological and psychological processes. Studies evaluating the impact of an individual’s chronotype on his/her academic achievement have indicated that morning chronotypes have an academic advantage over evening chronotypes. However, these studies did not account for the time of day in which the participants were being evaluated. The goal of the present study was to examine whether morning chronotypes do have an academic advantage over evening chronotypes when the time-of-day of classes and exams is taken into consideration. We obtained morningness-eveningness scores and course grades from 207 university …

Taking Up One's Cross With Hope: A Christian Approach To Suffering, Linda George Debrecht May 2017

Taking Up One's Cross With Hope: A Christian Approach To Suffering, Linda George Debrecht

Theses

The purpose of this study is to encourage a more contemporary understanding of the traditional Christian approach to suffering — the belief that we can experience great goodness and enrich our lives as a result of taking up our cross as Jesus did. This concept of "redemptive suffering" seems to be losing its viability in contemporary life. Instead, advancing support for the Assisted Suicide movement reflects a growing sense that suffering is a "problem" that can be "solved" even if it means taking one's own life. The author contends that a more contemporary understanding of Jesus' suffering — one that …
