The Off-Season: Masculinities, Rurality, & Family Ties In Alaska Commercial Fishermen, Cruz M. Morey May 2017

The Off-Season: Masculinities, Rurality, & Family Ties In Alaska Commercial Fishermen, Cruz M. Morey

Linfield University Student Symposium: A Celebration of Scholarship and Creative Achievement

The purpose of this study is to explore the intersections of masculinity, rurality, the family, and economics through the experiences of commercial fishermen in Alaska. Understanding masculinity as plural and the rural space as a sphere in which individuals operate, this study examines the relationship between the masculine rural and the rural masculine and how it pertains to commercial fishermen. I focus on the discourse already present about Alaska and commercial fishermen and combine this approach with notions of cultural and economic capital, as well as the local ecological knowledge (LEK). The fishermen describe their experiences in the industry as …

Making A Murderer: How Media Influences The Legitimacy Of The Legal System, Tasha A. Lane May 2017

Making A Murderer: How Media Influences The Legitimacy Of The Legal System, Tasha A. Lane

Linfield University Student Symposium: A Celebration of Scholarship and Creative Achievement

I analyzed how media’s discussion of a legal case altered the public’s perceptions of the U.S. legal system. The purpose of this study was to see if the media’s coverage of legal cases influences how the public views the legal system. It was hypothesized that the format media presents a legal case in alters how people view the legal system and that it most often leads to a negative perception. In this research, a documentary about a case, 30 online news articles discussing the case, and 197 public reactions to the case and the legal system were analyzed. I use …

Power Of Fate Through Light And Sound In Rupert Goold’S Macbeth, Hannah Eckhardt May 2017

Power Of Fate Through Light And Sound In Rupert Goold’S Macbeth, Hannah Eckhardt

BYU English Symposium

Rupert Goold’s 2010 film adaptation of Macbeth features a modern warlike setting in depiction the scene of Shakespeare’s play. Act 4 Scene 1 features the famous “Double, double, toil and trouble” scene in which Goold displays the three witches in nun-like headgear, displayed in a hospital like setting. In this scene, he uses light, sound, and transposition in order to illuminate the idea that the witches have power over Macbeth’s fate, and he also uses it to transmit the idea of how the witches allot Macbeth a temporary control over his own fate which results in his own downfall. This …

Revolutionary Rooms, Briana J. Fountain

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

Residence Halls are a social center on college campuses. The common spaces within a residence hall are a space for informal collectivism. However, they have become increasingly task specific and redundant. How do social constructs influence design? Should common spaces within the residence hall typology influence the design of the entire domicile? This thesis develops a methodology that prioritizes sociospatial relationships in the design of residence halls. This was accomplished through the exploration of college culture, socio-spatial relationships, and notions from sister typologies.

Scaling Of Anatomically Derived Maximal Bite Force In Primates, Ashley Deutsch May 2017

Scaling Of Anatomically Derived Maximal Bite Force In Primates, Ashley Deutsch

Senior Theses

Bite force analysis is important the examination of the evolutionary factors that have shaped the masticatory apparatus. Unfortunately, in primates, empirically measured bite force is largely unavailable because of the invasive nature of the procedure. Because of this, we have estimated bite force in a large sample across the primate order at three different realistic bite points along the tooth row: the first maxillary incisor, the maxillary canine, and the paracone of the first maxillary molar. Here, we model bite force by combining measured physiological crosssectional area of the jaw adductors from Hartstone-Rose and colleagues (2017) with osteological measurements from …

Memes And Politics: An Analysis Of The Digital Memetic Rhetoric Employed During The 2016 Presidential Election, Haley Nystrom May 2017

Memes And Politics: An Analysis Of The Digital Memetic Rhetoric Employed During The 2016 Presidential Election, Haley Nystrom

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

This paper examines the rhetorical strategies employed in the most popular political memes posted during the 2016 election year. It seeks to analyze thematic trends in rhetorical content reflective of cultural perceptions about American politics, anthropological realities, and information sharing and acquisition in The Digital Age. It measures how these different factors contributed to the “success” or lack thereof of the memes analyzed through various forms of reinforcement.
Pulling from a pool of the 500 most-shared political memes within the given time frame, I analyze recurring trends that appeared in fifty liberal and fifty conservative memes. My findings demonstrate how …

The Role Of Soccer In The Post-Colonial Relationship Between Brazil And Portugal, Hunter Johnson

Senior Theses

This thesis analyses the role of soccer in the post-colonial relationship between Brazil and Portugal. It begins by discussing the history of the two countries, in particular the discovery and colonization of Brazil by Portugal. The Paleoindian Occupation Of Southern New England: Evaluating Sub-Regional Variation In Paleoindian Lifeways In The New England-Maritimes Region, Zachary L. Singer May 2017

The Paleoindian Occupation Of Southern New England: Evaluating Sub-Regional Variation In Paleoindian Lifeways In The New England-Maritimes Region, Zachary L. Singer

Doctoral Dissertations

Using a multi-scalar approach, this dissertation investigates the Paleoindian occupations of New England with a focus on adaptive strategies related to environmental factors and the potential role that caribou played in Paleoindian subsistence. I analyze individual sites, geographic clusters of sites, sub-regions, and regional study areas. A data set inclusive of southern New England was obtained through three methodologies: my own excavations in Connecticut; reanalyses of Connecticut Paleoindian sites; and collaboration with researchers who shared data on Paleoindian sites in the Northeast.

On the scale of individual sites, I present site reports detailing the excavation and analysis of Ohomowauke and …

The Asia Culture Shock Experience, Judith Lin May 2017

The Asia Culture Shock Experience, Judith Lin

Senior Theses

While students go abroad to learn about new cultures and advance their language skills, there is typically an initial culture shock when entering these unfamiliar environments. It is important to understand the causes and effects of culture shock, in particular experiences in Asia, a region whose culture is significantly different from the individualist cultures in the United States and Europe. While being exposed to new cultures is increasingly important for our interdependent world, it becomes more important to observe reactions to that exposure and understand how those reactions form or how to handle them. In particular, students who study abroad …

Rapping Back: Counter-Narratives From Auckland, New Zealand, Mariel Lopez Rogers May 2017

Rapping Back: Counter-Narratives From Auckland, New Zealand, Mariel Lopez Rogers

Master's Theses

Across the Pacific in Auckland, New Zealand two rap groups, Homebrew and @Peace, are contributing to a theoretically rich and socially conscious Hip Hop scene. Their music critically questions commercialism and conformity in a culture shaped by a history of colonialism. This makes their message starkly opposed to the normative values of New Zealand. The musicians of Homebrew and @Peace, a mix of Polynesian and Pakeha (people of European descent), employ methods of decolonization theory through the use of storytelling and focus on indigenous values. In a country that has adopted the neoliberal beliefs that competition drives human relations, and …

Documentation Authority And Reliability In The Cultural Space Of The Wiki, Robert Kehler May 2017

Documentation Authority And Reliability In The Cultural Space Of The Wiki, Robert Kehler

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

The wiki is an online collaborative document that requires analysis and consideration from scholars of digital documentation. The wiki's authority style is based on reliability instead of authority. In a wiki, information becomes stable through discourse and conversation to produce a stable truth within the wiki itself. The wiki is unique for open-source access style, meaning all users are equal and anyone can participate. When more users are able to participate, more information is created, making the wiki an almost unlimited source of information creation. Also, the wiki has little to no barriers of entry, so wikis become a space …

Cédric Klapisch: My Piece Of The Pie (2011) – Intersecting Markets And Lives, Derya Özkan

Markets, Globalization & Development Review

This is a review of the film My Piece of the Pie (2011) by Cédric Klapisch, which brings together the separate lives of a working class woman and a hedge fund manager in France. The review explores the ways in which the film features emotional labor, shows the social inequalities between a winner and a loser of global economic markets, while also highlighting the reverse inequalities when it comes to skills in the world of emotions.

Jenny Slater, Youth And Disability - A Challenge To Mr. Reasonable (2015), Murad Canbulut May 2017

Jenny Slater, Youth And Disability - A Challenge To Mr. Reasonable (2015), Murad Canbulut

Markets, Globalization & Development Review

As Dholakia and Atik (2016) emphasize in the opening article of MGDR, we can “live with” labels such as advanced and emerging, rich, mid-income and poor, ancient and modern (and postmodern), Third World and First World. In addition to these labels, this review brings out labels and dualities such as able and disabled, reasonable and unreasonable. Introducing disability studies to the marketing field, this review analyzes Jenny Slater’s book which helps us gain a critical perspective on disability research.

Extending The Marketing Dialog On Poverty, Ravi S. Achrol, Philip Kotler May 2017

Extending The Marketing Dialog On Poverty, Ravi S. Achrol, Philip Kotler

Markets, Globalization & Development Review

We appreciate Professor Aneel Karnani’s contributions to the marketing dialog on poverty and our article “Marketing’s Lost Frontier: The Poor” (Achrol and Kotler 2016). We do not necessarily disagree with some of his criticisms but rather see them as an opportunity for expanding the discussion of marketing’s role in reducing world poverty. In this response, we revisit and elaborate on Social Marketing for the bottom-of-the-pyramid (BOP) and Distributed Production-Consumption view presented in the original article. These new marketing models – focused on distributing economic opportunity, income and standards of life to local communities – can substantially displace the giant centralized …

Marketing And Poverty Alleviation: The Perspective Of The Poor, Aneel Karnani May 2017

Marketing And Poverty Alleviation: The Perspective Of The Poor, Aneel Karnani

Markets, Globalization & Development Review

The best way to reduce poverty is to focus on raising the productive capacity – not the consumption capacity – of the poor. This implies poverty reduction efforts must focus on two dimensions: raising income of the poor, and providing the poor access to basic public services (such as public health, education, sanitation, infrastructure and security). First, the best way to raise income is to create employment opportunities for the poor. The private sector is clearly the best engine for job creation; the government can play a useful facilitating role. Second, governments are responsible for, and should be held accountable …

Adam Smith, Market And Social Change: Then And Now, Dominique Bouchet May 2017

Adam Smith, Market And Social Change: Then And Now, Dominique Bouchet

Markets, Globalization & Development Review

Adam Smith (1723-1790) provided us with a remarkable synthesis of the economic and political ideas of his time and developed a conceptual system to analyze social interactions that mattered for the wealth of nations. He proposed a radically different roadmap for the future development of the society he lived in. The fact that his original analyses were rooted in a given historical context and were founded on a well thought-through conceptual system should not be ignored. The dribs and drabs of Adam Smith ideas that are bandied about, particularly to support ‘free’ market and anti-regulatory policies, are a far cry …

The Fifth Epoch: Socio-Economic Approach To Sustainable Capitalism, David M. Boje, Yue Cai Hillon May 2017

The Fifth Epoch: Socio-Economic Approach To Sustainable Capitalism, David M. Boje, Yue Cai Hillon

Markets, Globalization & Development Review

The purpose of this conceptual essay is to challenge the inevitability of living with the destructive beast of speculative market economics in the 4th epoch of global capitalism. We are facing an existential socio-ecological threat from the short-term excesses of financial capitalism, a socially irresponsible form that consumes without producing value and without bearing entrepreneurial risk, benefitting only the few. The fate of roughly 90% of humanity hangs in the balance. The primary contribution of this paper proposes a 5th epoch of capitalism, inspired by Savall and Zardet’s socio-economic and sustainable approach that restores human potential and value …
