Bodies As Living, Twirling Sacrifices: Performing Black Girlhood, Liturgical Dance, And The Black Church Tradition, Brianna Heath May 2017

Bodies As Living, Twirling Sacrifices: Performing Black Girlhood, Liturgical Dance, And The Black Church Tradition, Brianna Heath

Cultural Studies Capstone Papers

The purpose of this study is to investigate liturgical dance in the black church tradition as a gendered space. I argue that black girls perform their sexuality as ascribed to hetero-patriarchal ideology—as preached within the black church—through liturgical dance. This ideology akin to politics of respectability separates the sacred from the secular which causes a tension. This tension shows up in the hyper-ness of liturgical dancing. This study discusses this by contextualizing liturgical dance within a history of black concert dance and embodied practices of resistance. This study frames liturgical dance within the black dance tradition, black feminist studies, and …

Yellow Tokens: From Racist Depictions To Token Minorities, Debra Kates May 2017

Yellow Tokens: From Racist Depictions To Token Minorities, Debra Kates

Cultural Studies Capstone Papers

The project argues that the misrepresentation of Asians in film is a direct result of white supremacy. It researches the presentation of East Asian Americans in films as a result of the hegemonic ideology of whiteness, focusing on the standard of movie star perfection as a form of white supremacy, and includes films that have white men and women cast in lead roles, even when the story is uniquely Asian. Using the theoretical lens of whiteness studies the project analyzes examples from the American film industry from the past fifteen years.

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Robot-Assisted Therapy (RAT) has successfully been used to improve social skills in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) through remote control of the robot in so-called Wizard of Oz (WoZ) paradigms. However, there is a need to increase the autonomy of the robot both to lighten the burden on human therapists (who have to remain in control and, importantly, supervise the robot) and to provide a consistent therapeutic experience. This paper seeks to provide insight into increasing the autonomy level of social robots in therapy to move beyond WoZ. With the final aim of improved human-human social interaction for the children, …

Faculty Response To Deselection In Academic Libraries: A Psycholinguistic Analysis, Ann Agee May 2017

Faculty Response To Deselection In Academic Libraries: A Psycholinguistic Analysis, Ann Agee

Faculty and Staff Publications

Deselection is a necessary but politically sensitive part of an academic librarian's responsibilities. To provide an overview of the emotional dynamics involved in weeding an academic collection, this article analyzes editorials, articles, and book chapters chronicling faculty response to weeding from a psycholinguistic viewpoint. Using computer-based text analysis, these accounts are examined for the amount and type of emotional content they contain. These findings provide a template for what librarians can expect when beginning a deselection process and point to best practices for working effectively with faculty to create a robust and healthy collection.

Zika 2016: A 3-Phase Longitudinal Study Of The Media Impact On Public Attitudes And Behavioral Response Characteristics, Karly Kownslar

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

Using the Extended Parallel Processing Model (EPPM) as a theoretical framework, the present 3-phase longitudinal study examines the impact of media exposure to Zika information on public perception of the threat severity, personal susceptibility, and behavioral intentions toward the threat of Zika virus between May and November of 2016. A total of 826 participants took an online survey throughout three phases, roughly one month apart. Participants were recruited using Amazon Mechanical Turk and TurkPrime. Measured EPPM concepts include: perceived severity, susceptibility, self- efficacy, response-efficacy, third-person effects, combined with behavioral intentions. Participants also selected the sources from which they …

Mega-Development Projects In Chile And Nicaragua: Social Costs And The Future Of Indigenous And Human Rights, Emily Kawahigashi May 2017

Mega-Development Projects In Chile And Nicaragua: Social Costs And The Future Of Indigenous And Human Rights, Emily Kawahigashi

SUURJ: Seattle University Undergraduate Research Journal

In this paper, I explore the impacts of mega-development projects in Chile and Nicaragua using a postcolonial framework to critically analyze the effects on the indigenous Pehuenche and Rama. Through an analysis of the Ralco Hydroelectric Dam in Chile and the proposed Interoceanic Nicaraguan Canal, I will examine the historical context and postcolonial practices that allowed for state approval of foreign-funded mega-development projects. I will then review each project’s impact on traditional, indigenous ways of life. Finally, I will propose a combined bottom-up and top-down strategy based on indigenous empowerment. My proposal is supported by the objectives of international multilateral …

How Will A Fourth Cross Curriculum Priority Of Catholicity And An Eighth General Capability Of Wisdom Contribute To Catholic Curriculum In Tasmanian Catholic Schools?, Bobbi-Jo Bailey, Alanna Stretton, Anita Cunningham May 2017

How Will A Fourth Cross Curriculum Priority Of Catholicity And An Eighth General Capability Of Wisdom Contribute To Catholic Curriculum In Tasmanian Catholic Schools?, Bobbi-Jo Bailey, Alanna Stretton, Anita Cunningham

eJournal of Catholic Education in Australasia

The Australian Curriculum identifies seven general capabilities (knowledge, skills, behaviours and dispositions) and three cross curriculum priorities (Sustainability; Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures; Asia and Australia’s Engagement with Asia) that students require for twenty-first century engagement and learning. In its implementation of the Australian Curriculum, The Tasmanian Catholic Education Office (TCEO) is considering introducing a fourth cross curriculum priority of Catholicity and an eighth general capability of Wisdom, in order to enhance the Catholic curriculum for Tasmanian Catholic schools. Using the stages of theological reflection outlined by Dr. Drasko Dizdar, this article will explore why a fourth …

Keres Language Loss In The Santo Domingo Pueblo Community, Christopher Chavez May 2017

Keres Language Loss In The Santo Domingo Pueblo Community, Christopher Chavez

American Studies ETDs

The purpose of this research is to consider the effect of the Keres language loss in the Santo Domingo Pueblo community and the need for language revitalization. The Keres-speaking community of Santo Domingo Pueblo has been adamantly opposed to instituting oral and written Keres language in the school system. The Santo Domingo people began to withhold information in response to the European intrusion into the Pueblo world. Isolating itself from the colonial powers served to maintain the unity of the Pueblo’s traditions and culture. However, a revitalization of the Keres language requires integration with the global society. Without the written …

Collision Or Cohesion? Hmong Shamanism And Ontological Holism In France, Madison Harmer, Telisha Pantelakis May 2017

Collision Or Cohesion? Hmong Shamanism And Ontological Holism In France, Madison Harmer, Telisha Pantelakis

FHSS Mentored Research Conference

The Hmong are an ethnic group from Southeast Asia who’ve lived as forced migrants and political refugees for the past several hundred years. Current U.S. literature has attributed Hmong difficulties adapting to Western culture, specifically health care from shamanic practices. They claim that traditional and western healing practices are incompatible. (Franzen-Castle & Smith 2013, Fadiman 1997). While living in a small town in central France, we conducted an ethnographic study observing Hmong refugees and their interactions and beliefs between traditional healing practices and Western medicine to explore this claim.
