The Amish Rule Of Order: Conformity And Deviance Among Amish Youth, Ashley M. Mendez Ruiz
The Amish Rule Of Order: Conformity And Deviance Among Amish Youth, Ashley M. Mendez Ruiz
Senior Capstone Theses
While there has been a good deal of publicity given to the Amish communities in the United State as a tourist attraction, little attention if any, focuses on the social problems they face as a community. Just like other subcultures, the Amish experience social problems being youth deviance as the most common among them. By answering my research question, I planned to support how some Amish practices like Rumspringa and shunning have a significant negative effect on the Amish youth. Criminological theory could help explain the nature of conformity and deviance among the Amish youth. The evidence suggest the Rumspringa …

La Madre Competitiva: An Experimental Study Of Women's Competitiveness In Medellin, Colombia, Miranda I. Lambert
La Madre Competitiva: An Experimental Study Of Women's Competitiveness In Medellin, Colombia, Miranda I. Lambert
Master's Theses
Abstract: This project is a follow up to Cassar, Wordofa, and Zhang (2015), which aimed at testing whether extending incentives beyond cash would alter the estimated competitive tendencies of men and women. Here we extend this work to an urban Colombian setting. In the previous study conducted in China, men have proven more competitive than women; however, once the incentive changes to a child-benefitting voucher, women increased their likeliness to compete. This research uses statistical and regression analysis to test whether or not women become more competitive when competing for a voucher, which directly benefits their child as opposed to …
Gender Differences In Willingness To Compete: Experimental Evidence From Bosnia, Boris Jokic
Gender Differences In Willingness To Compete: Experimental Evidence From Bosnia, Boris Jokic
Master's Theses
Abstract: This research examines gender differences in willingness to compete with differing incentives . The results of previous experiments show that women are significantly less competitive, even when they perform equally well as men. However, in these experiments cash was the only incentive provided. Therefore, we investigate what happens to gender differences in willingness to compete when we switch the incentive from cash to non-cash prize. Similar to Cassar, Whordofa, and Zhang (2016) who found that women become equally competitive as men when incentive is related to wellbeing of their children, we find that the gender gap in competitiveness still …
Children In Trouble With The Law And The United Nations Convention On The Rights Of The Child, Jennifer L. Swick
Children In Trouble With The Law And The United Nations Convention On The Rights Of The Child, Jennifer L. Swick
Theses and Dissertations
Children in trouble with the law are the focus of much research in the US, but when the scope broadens to include these children across the world, few studies can be found. The United Nations (UN) Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) articulates a set of universal rights for children. For children in trouble with the law, there are seven articulated rights across Articles 37 and 40; these are: protection against cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment or punishment; the right not to be detained in jails or prisons with adult convicts; the right to maintain contact with family …

Despite an increase in the number of PhDs earned by women and faculty of color in recent decades, they are less numerous among faculty at US colleges and universities. This scarcity is most pronounced at the level of full professor. Why are women and faculty of color not reaching the upper levels of academia? Previous research in the cultural taxation literature suggests that women and faculty of color experience heavier service burdens than their white male colleagues. In order to examine whether a heavier service burden could be at the root of the “leaky pipeline” from PhD to full professor …

Slices: Critical Theory As Praxis And Research-Based Service Learning, Anna C. Smedley-López, Heidi R. Johnson, Arléne Amarante
Humboldt Journal of Social Relations
Abstract: In an era of increasing racial and ethnic diversity, both in the larger U.S. society and in institutions of higher education, using teaching strategies that explicitly address racial justice can be a meaningful way to engage a diverse student. Service Learning Initiative for Community Engagement in Sociology (SLICES) is a research-based program in the Department of Sociology at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas that uses critical theories as praxis to foster academic and professional development, and civic engagement while paying particular attention racial justice. This paper describes the use of Feminist Standpoint Theory and Information Has Value as …

I Would Teach It, But I Don't Know How: Faculty Perceptions Of Cultural Competency In The Health Sciences, A Case Study Analysis, Andrew J. Young, Michelle L. Ramirez
Humboldt Journal of Social Relations
This paper presents results from a survey of faculty perceptions of cultural competency training at “Health Sciences University,” a small, private university in a major city in the Northeastern United States. We found high levels of support among faculty for cultural competency training for students in bench and health sciences broadly, though data suggests that faculty are unsure how to effectively teach cultural competency and how to evaluate its effectiveness. Placing this data alongside literature exploring the lack of diversity and a “chilly climate” in STEM and health science disciplines for marginalized groups, we argue for 1) a need to …
A Tale Of Two Settings: Rethinking Methods And Approaches For Diversity Research, Michelle Samura
A Tale Of Two Settings: Rethinking Methods And Approaches For Diversity Research, Michelle Samura
Humboldt Journal of Social Relations
In order to better understand the range of experiences of diverse college students, scholars engaging in diversity research must be mindful of our methodological assumptions. Existing research on environment and space suggests that the concept of a “setting” is not neutral or static. In this article, I emphasize the need to consider campus spaces as dynamic and fluid. I also suggest that depictions and reports of studies’ settings should capture diverse perspectives because different populations can view a single setting very differently. A singular version of a research setting may be inadequate. I offer an example of how one setting …
Teaching While White: White Identity Development And Antiracism For Educators, Amber Mackenzie Taylor
Teaching While White: White Identity Development And Antiracism For Educators, Amber Mackenzie Taylor
Master's Projects and Capstones
This project explores the use of mindfulness in antiracist professional development for educators, documenting the development and implementation of workshop curriculum across three conference settings. The purpose of the project was to engage White educators in the important inner work of understanding White racial conditioning and actively challenging the institutional and structural racism inherent in our education system. Beginning with an understanding of race, racism and Critical Race Theory, the curriculum was designed to support White educators in developing their own racial identities to further their own personal development. The workshop focuses on White Identity development (Helms, 1990) to support …
Incorporating The Cultures Of English-Language Learners In Daily Lesson Plans: A Two-Way Street, James G. Doyle
Incorporating The Cultures Of English-Language Learners In Daily Lesson Plans: A Two-Way Street, James G. Doyle
Master's Projects and Capstones
Teaching and learning culture have been matters of interest for teachers of English to speakers of other languages during the past half century. Since the development of the concept of communicative competence, theorists and practitioners have asked questions about the role of culture in the classroom. This field project was designed assist teachers in developing a heightened awareness of the roles of culture in the acquisition of communicative competence. It is my hope that teachers will use the awareness and the skills developed in the exercises and interactions presented in the field project to increase their effectiveness by adapting materials …

Practical Pragmatics: A Workshop To Learn Strategies For Teaching Pragmatic Awareness To Adult English Language Leaners, Sara G. Ziogas
Master's Projects and Capstones
The lack of teacher training and textbook teaching materials for developing pragmatic awareness in ESL (English as a second language) and EFL (English as a foreign language) classrooms has led to a gap in the development of students’ communicative competence in English as a second or foreign language. The purpose of this project is to provide an opportunity for teachers, who may be unaware of how to recognize their own first language pragmatic competence, to learn how to reverse-engineer their innate knowledge and then use those strategies to create practical, teachable lessons for their students to gain pragmatic awareness in …
Soaking In Manhood: (Re)Negotiating Masculinities And Sexualities In The Spas Of Quito, Ecuador, Ronnie Anthony Shepard
Soaking In Manhood: (Re)Negotiating Masculinities And Sexualities In The Spas Of Quito, Ecuador, Ronnie Anthony Shepard
Doctoral Dissertations
In this ethnographic investigation, the narratives of several Ecuadorian males are used to address the current intersections between personal sexual identities and masculinities. The intersections considered often take place within the Ecuadorian spa, an ethnosexual frontier in which heteronormative identities are negotiated against a backdrop of homosocial camaraderie and homoerotic desire. The role of the spa in these negotiations is twofold: it offers a space for men who have sex with men (MSM) to gain culturally requisite sexual experience, and it challenges the stereotypes of MSM as hyper-sexualized by doubling as a homosocial space in which no sexual activity is …

Teleterrestrial: The Universe Of Technological And Natural Scenes, Nat Rainer
Graduate School of Art Theses
In the Universe of Technical and Natural scenes, is Telerrarin. Telerrain is composed from my point of view as an artist. This terrain of combined forms is seen in three scenes that assemble technology, humanity, and the natural world. Each scene is set in different landscapes: the desert, the countryside, and the ocean. As an artist, I see these settings with the vision of a director that drives the atmosphere, life forms, and cyclical verves that make these landscapes real. As a writer, my voice describes how technology, humanity, and the natural world fit together, and then asserts the kinds …
Cat Metamorfosis: Becoming Animal And The Freedom Of Non-Identity, Hannah Becker
Cat Metamorfosis: Becoming Animal And The Freedom Of Non-Identity, Hannah Becker
Bachelor of Fine Arts Senior Papers
A large number of modern and contemporary female artists have employed the state of becoming to either free themselves of or challenge the social norms that come with being a woman. Kara Walker frees the Mammy of her expectation by combining her with a sphinx in her monumental sugar sculpture, A Subtlety. The Guerilla Girls have an impenetrable and unidentifiable voice when they speak from behind gorilla masks. Lucy Gunning’s The Horse Impressionists depicts women mimicking the behavior of horses to lose their human consciousness, and more specifically, female identity. Looking beyond the art world and into recent consumerist …

Mechanically Derived Narrative Through Perception Of Video Game Characters, Matthew Cappo
Lexia: Undergraduate Journal in Writing, Rhetoric & Technical Communication
In this research paper composed for WRTC 200: Introduction to Studies in Writing, Rhetoric and Technical Communication, Cappo uses industry-related articles and academic studies to demonstrate how various interactive design choices in video games serve to influence the impression players feel toward a game's world and its characters. Thorough and analytical, the piece serves as a guiding example of how interactive elements of a video game can work constructively with its storytelling to create an enjoyable and immersive experience.
Down Syndrome, The Image Of God, And Personhood, Paris Webb
Down Syndrome, The Image Of God, And Personhood, Paris Webb
Dialogue & Nexus
People with Down syndrome help Christians understand what being made in the image of God truly means. After describing Down syndrome, we will examine the different views of the image of God and how these relate to people with Down syndrome. Another approach will be to define personhood in light of God’s image and relate it to Down syndrome. We will use the principles held by the L’Arche community as an exemplar in this discussion to demonstrate that those with Down syndrome encourage us to expand our understanding of the image of God. Consequently, Down’s persons allow us to apply …
Race Relations: A Dialogue Between Science And Theology On The Basis Of Race, Shanice Latham
Race Relations: A Dialogue Between Science And Theology On The Basis Of Race, Shanice Latham
Dialogue & Nexus
When the topic of race is breached the emotions expressed can range from extreme feelings of guilt to extreme feelings of anger. Why is a word that is, today, commonly associated with a person’s skin color and other physical characteristics responsible for such strong emotional reactions? Much of the violence, poverty, injustice, and hurt in the world has been and is caused by racial division. With the continued use of such an arbitrary system as race these issues will continue to persist and deteriorate. This paper will explore the origin, as well as scientific and theological perspectives of race and …
Feminism In Biology And Belief, Rachel Hurst
Feminism In Biology And Belief, Rachel Hurst
Dialogue & Nexus
As feminism has become more hotly-contested in today’s society, the need to analyze the movement’s claims from a scientific and theological perspective has developed. Labor statistics and sociological research reveal that income inequality persists between the sexes. Neuroscience and evolutionary psychology show that subtle differences exist between male and female brains, and these slight variations can potentially be traced to the differing selective pressures between the genders. Ultimately, the biological differences that favor power differentials must be overcome to remedy inequality and injustice. Although Christians have historically upheld these differences and viewed women as inferior, a more modern theological understanding …

Subjectivity Of Solar Power: Using Q Methodology To Evaluate Perceptions Of Solar Energy Projects In The San Luis Valley, Aaron D. Russell
Subjectivity Of Solar Power: Using Q Methodology To Evaluate Perceptions Of Solar Energy Projects In The San Luis Valley, Aaron D. Russell
Geography ETDs
Renewable energy is on the verge of becoming a significant source of power generation and for many Americans, that will mean thinking and talking about energy technologies in new ways. Land intensive energies such as solar and green will compete more and more with aspects of our social world. This project focuses on the perception, acceptance, and discourse of renewable energy projects by examining the solar energy conversation in the San Luis Valley of Southern Colorado. This vast high-desert valley holds the excellent geographic conditions needed for the siting of large solar energy installations, but such projects continue to run …
Fair Labor Practices In Values-Based Agrifood Supply Chains?, Larry L. Burmeister, Keiko Tanaka
Fair Labor Practices In Values-Based Agrifood Supply Chains?, Larry L. Burmeister, Keiko Tanaka
Community & Leadership Development Faculty Publications
This research commentary reviews our exploratory study of the incorporation of fair labor practices into the business models of values-based agrifood supply chains (VBSCs) studied in the USDA-sponsored “agriculture-of-the-middle” (AOTM) regional research project. We examined what the certification affiliations of AOTM enterprises signaled about their values priorities as described in AOTM case study documents and in the enterprises’ website advertising outreach. While we found weak evidence for prioritization of the fair labor practices value in these case study materials, our analysis suggests that characteristics of VBSC lead enterprises—whether the VBSCs are producer-, consumer-, or aggregator-driven—provide a promising focus for future …
Environmental Forensics: An Innovative Technique Using Bone To Identify Mercury And Stable Isotope Levels In Internal Tissues Of Wildlife In A Changing Western Alaska Environment, Bonita Hope Dainowski
Environmental Forensics: An Innovative Technique Using Bone To Identify Mercury And Stable Isotope Levels In Internal Tissues Of Wildlife In A Changing Western Alaska Environment, Bonita Hope Dainowski
Chemistry and Biochemistry
We evaluated if total mercury (THg) concentrations of keratin-based and bone-based tissues can predict THg concentrations in skeletal muscle, renal medulla, renal cortex, and liver. The THg concentration in matched tissues of 65 red foxes, Vulpes vulpes, from western Alaska was determined. Hair THg concentration had a significant positive correlation with liver, renal medulla, renal cortex, and muscle. The THg concentration is moderately predictive of THg concentration in the renal cortex and liver for these foxes based on R² values (R² = 0.61 and 0.63, respectively), but was not moderately predictive of THg for renal medulla R² = 0.50 and …
Separation In The Sara Female Initiation Ceremony, Kelsey Moe
Separation In The Sara Female Initiation Ceremony, Kelsey Moe
Religious Studies Undergraduate Research
This paper employs hermeneutics as opposed to a comparative, explanatory, or descriptive method to engage the phenomenon of Sara female initiation as captured by Lori Leonard’s ethnography, “Female Circumcision in Southern Chad: Origins, Meaning, and Current Practice.” The Sara people of Southern Chad – although predominantly Christian – have their roots in a pre-colonial religion that reveres ancestors. The spirits of Sara ancestors are believed to exist in the bush outside of the village. In the female initiation ceremony, girls are removed from the village and enter the surrounding bush to undergo the ritual transition. This separation is key to …
Subsistence And Commercial Fisheries Through The Lenses Of Culture And Economy In Three Coastal Alaskan Communities, Davin L. Holen
Subsistence And Commercial Fisheries Through The Lenses Of Culture And Economy In Three Coastal Alaskan Communities, Davin L. Holen
Anthropology
Commercial and subsistence fisheries in Alaska are complex social-ecological systems constituting interdependent components which include economics and culture at the local and regional levels. Each fishery has unique challenges and benefits; however, a commonality that can be found in coastal communities in Alaska is that salmon fisheries are for many a way of life that serve to link commercial and subsistence practices to family and traditions. This research investigated whether and how culture is a key component of subsistence and commercial fisheries in three core study communities in different parts of coastal Alaska; Chenega Bay in Prince William Sound, Kokhanok …
A Metric Investigation Of The Cranial Base And Vertebrae Among Extant African Homininae: Discrimination Across Posturo-Locomotory Complexes, David Alexander Lukaszek
A Metric Investigation Of The Cranial Base And Vertebrae Among Extant African Homininae: Discrimination Across Posturo-Locomotory Complexes, David Alexander Lukaszek
Anthropology
Cranial base angle, vertebral dimensions, vertebral curvature, and locomotive behavior differ among Homo, Pan, and Gorilla; but many distinctions are obfuscated by dimensional and behavioral overlap among the genera and their fossil relatives. To address these issues, cranial and vertebral measurements (suites) were examined among Homo, Gorilla, and Pan as representative hominines for their posture and locomotion or positional-locomotory complexes. An additional analysis considered Australopithecus afarensis (A.L. 288-1 and A.L. 333) for comparative purposes. Using size-adjusted values with applied Bonferroni adjusted alpha levels, significant results for both the Kruskal-Wallis H-test and Mann-Whitney U-tests indicated statistically significant differences among species for …
