How Can We Critically & Creatively Engage With Power Relations In Collaborative Design Research?, Åsa Ståhl, Mathilda Tham, Sara Hyltén-Cavallius
Nordes Conference Series
This workshop explores power relations in collaborative design research. As co-creation is becoming more established and even something of a holy grail, it is important to revisit and further understandings of, for example, the limits to democracy in collaborative research and conflicting agendas. The workshop draws on ongoing research that explores housing needs and solutions at the intersection of an ageing population, students and migrants, and that engages multiple stakeholder groups in collaborative processes. The proposed workshop will stage an enactment of the research design, from invitation to analysis, with the workshop participants playing the different roles in the process. …
Power Of Design Agency In Building And Sustaining Collaboration: Two Cases In São Paulo, Janaina Barbosa, Heather Wiltse, João Mota
Power Of Design Agency In Building And Sustaining Collaboration: Two Cases In São Paulo, Janaina Barbosa, Heather Wiltse, João Mota
Nordes Conference Series
Design research has considered the power of collaboration in terms of the politics of artefacts, services and practices to build or to support publics. Working within a framework of “commons” as continuing processes of negotiation in collaboration, this study asks: How can design skills and agency build up collaborative capacities in urban communities for sustained processes of social innovation? This qualitative research explores two case studies in Brazil, where design agency is identified in social practices carried out by both designers and non-designers. Three key processes involved in designing collaboration were identified: experimenting, disrupting and sustaining. This work concluded that …

What Is Your Critical Approach? Design, Power And Proximity, Shana Agid, Sissel Olander
Nordes Conference Series
This workshop explores strategies and tactics for “doing” critique in and through design research, The workshop invites design researchers from both descriptive-analytical fields and practise based and experimental fields to discuss the possibilities of critique and critical approaches in design research. The workshop invokes notions of critical distance and proximity through discussions of empirical examples provided by the organisers and participants in tandem. Participants will introduce themselves through a short, informal presentation of their work and its critical questions. Together, these case examples and questions will provide a frame for thinking about the critical capacities of descriptive-analytical and constructive design …
What Does Scripture Say About Homosexuality?: Ethical Questions For Christian Communities, Emily Toler
What Does Scripture Say About Homosexuality?: Ethical Questions For Christian Communities, Emily Toler
Denison Journal of Religion
This article seeks to articulate a close reading of the treatment of homosexuality in the bible in order to help Christians discern an appropriate reaction to homosexuality and homosexuals on a community level. First delving into the traditional verses used to condemn homosexuality like the story of the Sodomite, the Holiness Code in Leviticus, and Paul's letter to the Romans, the author finds that these passages frequently have competing interpretations. For example, the story of the Sodomites is often told as a condemnation of rape, violence, and inhospitableness, not homosexuality. The Holiness Code could be interpreted not only as a …
Monks As Model Men: Gender Anomalies Or Heroic Ideal?, Aaron Raverty Osb
Monks As Model Men: Gender Anomalies Or Heroic Ideal?, Aaron Raverty Osb
Saint John’s Abbey Publications
The movie The Mask You Live In portrays gender socialization for men in the United States today as dominated by a trajectory emphasizing ruthless competition, a never-ending search for prestige in material wealth, and a largely self-serving quest to overcome and control women. The movie graphically depicts all the accompanying psychological dysfunction, legal difficulties, and emotional distress experienced by boys and young men desperately trying to conform to such a scripted model of masculinity. Anthropological research invites alternate ways of thinking about the relationship between sex and gender. This is especially true among those who claim a close relationship with …

The Political Man As A Sick Animal: On The “Ideology Of Kisêdjê Political Leadership”, André Drago
The Political Man As A Sick Animal: On The “Ideology Of Kisêdjê Political Leadership”, André Drago
Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America
Eloquent, wise, generous; in short, “exemplary,” Kisêdjê political leaders are also said to be “animal-like” dangerous beings. For Anthony Seeger, this “ideological ambivalence” expresses the contradiction which constitutes the leader’s position-function, whose “political power” working at the center of the village derives from peripheral kinship affiliations. Moreover, supposed to withhold the group’s “norms”, he is surprisingly entitled to violate them–primarily, he is exempted from uxorilocality. I try to demonstrate that the inflections the leader subjects patterns of kinship-making process alter his body and agency, rendering him more or less human and, therefore, capable of mediating between the Kisêdjê and their …

“Being Flexible”: Reflections On How An Anthropological Theory Spills Into The Contemporary Political Life Of An Amazonian People, Stine Krøijer
Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America
This article examines the work of William T. Vickers and describes how his theory about the flexible adaptation of the Siona-Secoya to their forested environment has spilled into their contemporary political life. Based on recurring fieldwork among the Secoya in Northeastern Ecuador, the article shows that “being flexible” has become a particular way of talking about and managing relations to powerful outsiders such as representatives of oil companies and government officials. The article brings together ethnography on the Secoya’s relationship to Occidental Petroleum Company in 1999–2001 and their turn to oil palm cultivation as subcontractors to a plantation company after …
Etnologia Brasileira: Behind The Scenes, Vanessa R. Lea
Etnologia Brasileira: Behind The Scenes, Vanessa R. Lea
Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America
This text reflects on the changing role of anthropologists carrying out research with indigenous peoples in Brazil and on the increasing constraints that they are subjected to, both in terms of the legislation they must comply with and in terms of the way they are envisioned by contemporary indigenous peoples and non-anthropologists. At the time of this writing, sixty-seven people in Brazil who have acted in defense of the rights of indigenous peoples and Maroon descendants (Quilombolas) face bogus criminal charges. Frequently anthropologists are denigrated and accused of using the knowledge acquired during their research for personal enrichment …

Safer Sex Practices Among Newly Diagnosed Hiv-Positive Men Who Have Sex With Men In China: Results From An Ethnographic Study, Haochu Li, Andrea Sankar, Eleanor Holroyd, Baofa Jiang
School of Nursing & Midwifery, East Africa
The study reported here sought to understand the rationales of safer sex practices adopted by newly diagnosed HIV-positive men who have sex with men (MSM). Guided by a socio-ecological framework, an ethnography was conducted among newly diagnosed HIV-positive MSM. In-depth interviews and participant observation were employed to produce an account of the social and cultural settings that was faithful to the perspectives of participants. A total of 31 participants with diverse backgrounds were recruited in a southern city of China. Participant observation was conducted in local healthcare settings, MSM venues, and NGO offices. Most participants (24/31) reported stopping unprotected anal …

A Review On Literature Of Waqf For Poverty Alleviation Between 2006-2016, Nur Atikah Atan, Fuadah Johari
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Background - The success of Waqf as a source of socio-economic financing in Islamic history in developing a country by providing the social and public goods to the society have been a major factor for Waqf practices to be retrieved back today. In order to exterminate the poverty, depending in Zakat alone is not enough. Waqf can be an alternative in solving the socio-economic problem of the Ummah which covers the issues such as poverty, inequality and rising cost of living as well in promoting the social well-being in the society. Purpose - The purpose of this article is to …

Sentiments, Conduct, And Trust In The Laboratory, Vernon Smith, Bart J. Wilson
Sentiments, Conduct, And Trust In The Laboratory, Vernon Smith, Bart J. Wilson
ESI Publications
In this essay we provide a brief account and interpretation of The Theory of Moral Sentiments showing that it departs fundamentally from contemporary patterns of thought in economics that are believed to govern individual behavior in small groups, and contains strong testable propositions governing the expression of that behavior. We also state a formal representation of the model for individual choice of action, apply the propositions to the prediction of actions in trust games, report two experiments testing these predictions, and interpret the results in terms directly related to the model. In short, we argue that the system of sociability …
Religion And Genocide Nexuses: Bosnia As Case Study, Kate E. Temoney
Religion And Genocide Nexuses: Bosnia As Case Study, Kate E. Temoney
Department of Religion Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Social scientists have been involved in systematic research on genocide for over forty years, yet an under-examined aspect of genocide literature is a sustained focus on the nexuses of religion and genocide, a lacuna that this article seeks to address. Four ways religion and genocide intersect are proposed, of which two will receive specific attention: (1) how religious rhetoric and (2) how religious individuals and institutions foment genocide. These two intersections are further nuanced by combining a Weberian method of typologies, the Durkheimian theory of collective violence, and empirical data in the form of rhetoric espoused by perpetrators and supporters …

Pembelahan Ideologi, Kontestasi Pemilu, Dan Persepsi Ancaman Keamanan Nasional: Spektrum Politik Indonesia Pasca 2014?, Ari Ganjar Herdiansah, Junaidi -, Heni Ismiati
Jurnal Wacana Politik
Building A Relationship With The Earth: Humans And Ecology In Genesis 1-3, Stephen Grosse
Building A Relationship With The Earth: Humans And Ecology In Genesis 1-3, Stephen Grosse
Denison Journal of Religion
Grosse reimagines the relationship between 21st century Christians and nature by doing a close analysis of Genesis 1-3. While these chapters have long been used to prove that humans have dominion over the earth and can use it as they see fit, Grosse argues that a closer look at the language used by the Genesis writers provides a far different picture. In fact, he claims that this analysis results in a challenge issued to those invested in the Genesis story to treat the earth with respect and care.
Grosse's close reading of Genesis 1, the creation of the earth, shows …
