Conversations In The Rainforest: Culture, Values, And The Environment In Central Africa, Richard B. Peterson
Conversations In The Rainforest: Culture, Values, And The Environment In Central Africa, Richard B. Peterson
Environmental Studies Faculty Books
This book examines the environmental perceptions, values, and practices of inhabitants of Central Africa’s rainforests in order to help build a more firm foundation for ecological and social sustainability at the local level, while also making contributions to global environmental ethics from underrepresented African cultural traditions. It focuses on two case studies in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), one an integrated health and sustainable development project in the Ubangi region, and the other a large wildlife reserve in the Ituri Forest. Through in-depth interviews, focus groups, and participant observation conducted with local farmers and foragers, project staff, and local …
Examining Cross-Cultural Affective Components Of Global Competence From A Value Perspective, Nadia Awaida-Nachabe
Examining Cross-Cultural Affective Components Of Global Competence From A Value Perspective, Nadia Awaida-Nachabe
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to explore perceived importance of cultural values and affective components in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region and their relationships. This study identified which of the nine affective components of global competence and four higher order cultural values were perceived to be important in the MENA region. It also examined the correlations between cultural values and affective components and whether significant differences existed based on gender, age, and country of citizenship.
This research involved the combination of Wallenberg-Lerner’s Affective Component Questionnaire (ACQ) and Schwartz’s Portrait Value Questionnaire (PVQ). In conjunction with a …
The Racialized And Gendered Representations Of Multiculturalism From An Elite Firm Approach, Ryeora Choe
The Racialized And Gendered Representations Of Multiculturalism From An Elite Firm Approach, Ryeora Choe
Sociology ETDs
This thesis explores how Korean business firms reproduce racial division and hierarchies in the face of changing immigration under new post-colonial dynamics. In my exploration, I ask the following questions: How is the idea of multiculturalism represented, framed, and carried out in their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs? Who is included as ‘multicultural’ in these programs? What racial meanings do these programs convey in the Korean context? Using qualitative content analysis of reports and websites, I analyze how the top 30 Korean firms negotiate the meanings of multiculturalism and shape notions of it through their CSR programs. Findings show that …

The Task Force met twice during spring 2016 and monthly from September 2016 through June 2017. The co-chairs and research assistants met weekly to discuss progress …
I Was Taught To Yell Fire, Marina Gutierrez
I Was Taught To Yell Fire, Marina Gutierrez
Honors Theses
From a very young age my mother always told me to yell, “Fire,” if I was ever in a situation where I needed help from a potential attacker, but I never understood why I couldn’t just yell, “Help.” Her reasoning was that many people will run towards a fire to help put it out or save potential victims, but when someone yells for help others will shy away because they don’t want to get involved. I would just nod and promise to yell fire not really understanding the underlying meaning she had just explained to me.
It wasn’t until I …

Les Recueils D'Ornements Latino-Américains. Instrumentalisations Nationales Et Internationales (1923 - 1947), Élodie Vaudry
Artl@s Bulletin
Water, Roads, And Mapping Diaspora Through Biomythography, Lia T. Bascomb
Water, Roads, And Mapping Diaspora Through Biomythography, Lia T. Bascomb
Anthurium: A Caribbean Studies Journal
Reading Paule Marshall’s 2009 memoir Triangular Road as a biomythography illumines the ways in which the African diaspora is imagined in and through personal and collective narrative. African diaspora studies has sought to map the historical moments, cultural practices, political considerations, and geographical and conceptual spaces that constitute the African diaspora. This article explores how biomythography can possibly map African diaspora discourse beyond the temporal and the spatial. Triangular Road connects diasporic movement and misunderstanding. It uses the concept of bodies of water to map Marshall’s life path. It crosses the lines of official nation-state representations, social gatherings, and international …
Grow-Made Textiles, Carole Collet
Grow-Made Textiles, Carole Collet
Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series
This paper explores the emergent notion of the ‘grow-made’ by evaluating current work produced for Mycelium Textiles, a design research project that investigates the potential for co-making and co- designing with mycelium. Mycelium is the root of fungi, it is composed of a fine network of thread-like branches and is found underground. By cultivating mycelium on a range of substrates, it is possible to grow materials by harnessing its ability to digest and transform cellulosic food into natural composites. This paper will specifically discuss work in progress into mycelium colonisation techniques applied to textiles and their potential to propose innovative …

Interlacing Surfaces: Relating Tim Ingold’S Understanding Of Material With Material In Interface And Interaction Design, Alice Rzezonka, Fabian Hemmert
Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series
Unlike in other fields of design, interface and interaction designers rarely relate an understanding of material to the process and outcome of their work. Their practice seems to be to engage with information rather than material. However, a different perspective has been brought into focus recently: Researchers have started to investigate the material dimension of digital data from a theoretical angle, while new developments in the field of wearables, e-textiles and smart materials focus on the material side of interaction. However, when discussing these approaches, it is still difficult to establish what kind of understanding of material should be applied. …
Tinkering With Mycelium. A Case Study., Stefano Parisi, Valentina Rognoli
Tinkering With Mycelium. A Case Study., Stefano Parisi, Valentina Rognoli
Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series
Creative hands-on experimentation with materials is a significant practice for material-driven design. It allows to understand materials, move further experimentations and generate meaningful visions. Through Material Tinkering, the tinkerer establish an intimate dialogue with the material, allowing the material to express its agency and letting it speaks. The material suggests and moves the designer’s choices and actions, co-performing in a proactive way, as it was alive. This is even more evident when experimenting with a living organism, e.g. mycelium, when the material is alive. How does tinkering contribute in understanding these materials? How do living and growing materials influence tinkering? …

Radically Relational: Using Textiles As A Platform To Develop Methods For Embodied Design Processes, Bruna Petreca, Carmem Saito, Xuemei Yu, Nadia Bianchi-Berthouze, Andy Brown, Jasmine Cox, Maxine Glancy, Sharon Baurley
Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series
This position paper builds on textiles as a metaphor to explore the experiential knowledge observed through embodied design processes. In order to build understanding, we have tailored our tools and methods to support our explorations so far. As literature shows articulating our sensory experiences with materials is a challenging task. In order to support our investigations, in this paper we present a reflection on our diverse approaches to introduce tools that support us in interrogating how designers relate with materials, particularly textiles, and use their sensorial body to experience them during the creative process. We build on our previous research …
Uncovering Digital Craft Methods In The Design Of Enhanced Objects And Surfaces, Lucie Hernandez
Uncovering Digital Craft Methods In The Design Of Enhanced Objects And Surfaces, Lucie Hernandez
Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series
This paper focuses on the growing field of creative practice that aligns physical and digital spaces, processes and experiences. This field recognises the potential for heightening human expression and sensibility through practice that engages multi-disciplinary, hybrid approaches taken from computing, engineering, e-textiles, craft and design. Craft practice is explored within a broader field of making, which in this research, is applied to the design of responsive objects in a move towards more nuanced, empathetic interfaces. The situated body is central to comprehending the nature of experience, as we perceive the world through multiple sensory modes. Key commentators have framed an …
Tolkien’S Sub-Creation And Secondary Worlds: Implications For A Robust Moral Psychology, Nathan S. Lefler
Tolkien’S Sub-Creation And Secondary Worlds: Implications For A Robust Moral Psychology, Nathan S. Lefler
Journal of Tolkien Research
In his work, “On Fairy Stories,” J. R. R. Tolkien offers a detailed account of what he calls Sub-creation, along with the corresponding notions of Primary and Secondary Worlds. In this paper, I suggest that Tolkien’s concept of Sub-creation can be creatively appropriated in the realm of moral psychology and there applied to the fundamental relationship between self and other – or in Judeo-Christian terms, “I” and my neighbor. Through appeal to Tolkien’s thought and to the wider Christian theological tradition, and in constructive tension with the contemporary psychoanalytic attention to “intersubjectivity,” I attempt to elucidate the power and appropriate …
Time Warp: Cinematic Pilgrimage To Lourdes And Santiago, Alison T. Smith
Time Warp: Cinematic Pilgrimage To Lourdes And Santiago, Alison T. Smith
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
Pilgrims experience time in ways that deviate from the norm. The pilgrim’s encounter with time can be disorienting due to environmental changes, physical hardships, and unexpected occurrences. Pilgrims may also feel an intense connection with the historical or personal past. This chapter will examine two films in which pilgrims experience dramatic shifts in the perception of time. Julian Schnabel’s The Diving Bell and the Butterfly is a cinematic interpretation of Jean-Dominique Bauby’s memoires by the same name. Bauby, the editor of Elle magazine, suffers a sudden stroke at the height of his career. Subsequent to the stroke, he experiences a …
Grit Or Grace: Packing For The Camino De Santiago, Megan Havard
Grit Or Grace: Packing For The Camino De Santiago, Megan Havard
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
As the director of a new collegiate study-abroad program that will invite students to complete a segment of a Christian pilgrimage across northern Spain, the Camino de Santiago (Way of St. James), I am tasked with setting the expectations of students, parents and administrators, and with addressing the needs of student travellers. The present chapter analyses several genres of cultural artefacts that novice pilgrims, such as my students, are likely to encounter prior to departure: travel guidebooks and manuals, publications more generally about sacred journeys, pilgrimage memoirs and films. These texts help to frame the journey ahead as a pilgrimage, …

Identity And Community In Rural Higher Education: Creating New Pathways To Women's Leadership In Oaxaca, Mexico, Amanda Marie Elder
Identity And Community In Rural Higher Education: Creating New Pathways To Women's Leadership In Oaxaca, Mexico, Amanda Marie Elder
Dissertations and Theses
The emergence of higher education opportunities in rural areas of Mexico such as throughout the state of Oaxaca has opened new opportunities for young women's professional development and new individual and community identities. I explore tensions between the collective imaginary of rural Mexico and rural women's emerging sense of independence and self-determination in light of higher education's expanding opportunities. Educational opportunities lead to community formation around commonality of experience in addition to ascribed community relationships and roles. I situate this analysis within the context of the Universidad Tecnológica de los Valles Centrales de Oaxaca (UT), a small university in San …
The Riddle Of Malnutrition : The Long Arc Of Biomedical And Public Health Interventions In Uganda, Jennifer Tappan
The Riddle Of Malnutrition : The Long Arc Of Biomedical And Public Health Interventions In Uganda, Jennifer Tappan
Ohio University Press Open Access Books
More than ten million children suffer from severe acute malnutrition globally each year. In Uganda, longstanding efforts to understand, treat, and then prevent the condition initially served to medicalize it, in the eyes of both biomedical personnel and Ugandans who brought their children to the hospital for treatment and care. Medicalization meant malnutrition came to be seen as a disease—as a medical emergency—not a preventable condition, further compromising nutritional health in Uganda.
Rather than rely on a foreign-led model, physicians in Uganda responded to this failure by developing a novel public health program known as Mwanamugimu. The new approach prioritized …
Shouts Of The Khori-Challwa: Andean Mythological And Cosmological Reconsiderations Of The American Identity In Gamaliel Churata’S El Pez De Oro, Stephen Delaney Mcnabb
Shouts Of The Khori-Challwa: Andean Mythological And Cosmological Reconsiderations Of The American Identity In Gamaliel Churata’S El Pez De Oro, Stephen Delaney Mcnabb
Dissertations and Theses
This thesis explores the possible creation of a new categorization of American Literature as presented in the Andean novel El pez de oro: Retablos del Laykhakuy (1957) by Gamaliel Churata. In El pez de oro, Gamaliel Churata presents a strategy for the recuperation of native Andean cultural agency that enables the Andean subject to reclaim traces of their ancestral past under more verisimilar and verifiable terms. Churata argues that through a recuperation of native language and its infusion into the body of the major colonial language, Spanish, the Andean subject is equipped with a new culture producing tool that …
From Womb To Tomb: Learning To Live With Documents, Frederick W. Guyette
From Womb To Tomb: Learning To Live With Documents, Frederick W. Guyette
Proceedings from the Document Academy
Official records are ubiquitous in American life. Even before a birth certificate is issued for a child, medical professionals create an ultrasound image. The family regards that image as sublime, but the doctor scutinizes it in a different way. When a child is older, the birth certificate is what the school wants to see. Later in life, many other documents will be generated: a driver's license and car insurance, employment and tax records, financial documents associated with buying a home, passports for travel, and then a last will and testament, followed by a death certificate. Coping with documents throughout the …
