Gene Drives, Nature, Governance: An Ethnographic Perspective, Irus Braverman
Gene Drives, Nature, Governance: An Ethnographic Perspective, Irus Braverman
Contributions to Books
Published as chapter 3 in Gene Editing, Law, and the Environment, Irus Braverman, ed.
Synthetic gene drives raise ethical, ecological, and legal questions that are sometimes difficult to grasp. What is clear, however, is that the power to directly alter not just a singular form of life but the genetics of entire populations and species are currently both under-regulated and under-theorized. In place of state regulations, what seems to be emerging is a form of self-regulation by the gene drive scientists themselves. My chapter draws on in-depth interviews with several prominent gene drive scientists to explore their approach toward nature, …

Manner Of Death And Willingness To Nullify In A Euthanasia Case, Daniel Bell
Manner Of Death And Willingness To Nullify In A Euthanasia Case, Daniel Bell
Theses
Jurors are subject to many biases that hinder their ability to make objective decisions and nullification may occur when the jury believes the law is unfair or immoral. In a case involving euthanasia, a defendant may not be viewed as having committed a crime if it was done out of mercy and a jury may be more likely to choose to nullify as a result. However, nullification can encourage jurors to make decisions based on their attitudes and subjective interpretations of events. One unexplored potential influence on euthanasia attitudes and the decision to nullify may be the manner of death. …

Genotype imputation is a powerful strategy for achieving the large sample sizes required for identification of variants underlying complex phenotypes, but imputation of rare variants remains problematic. Genetically isolated populations offer one solution, however population-specific reference panels are needed to assure optimal imputation accuracy and allele frequency estimation. Here we report the Anabaptist Genome Reference Panel (AGRP), the first whole-genome catalogue of variants and phased haplotypes in people of Amish and Mennonite ancestry. Based on high-depth whole-genome sequence (WGS) from 265 individuals, the AGRP contains >12 M high-confidence single nucleotide variants and short indels, of which ~12.5% are novel. These …
What Is 'Natural' About Natural Science: Philosophical Naturalism In The Evolution Debate, Hya P. Winham
What Is 'Natural' About Natural Science: Philosophical Naturalism In The Evolution Debate, Hya P. Winham
Episteme
Creationist Phillip E. Johnson argues that evolution theory is a product of a bias toward naturalistic explanation—a materialist philosophical ideology that encroaches on empirical science. This position even got some support from philosopher Michael Ruse. But the fact is science must include a base level of presupposition; the creationist, while supplying her own, mistakenly thinks that science can operate without such an explanatory guide. This paper defends naturalism in science, thereby rejecting the concerns and arguments of neo-creationists. In this effort, the author argues why naturalism is important to science, uses Dewey to explain why anti-naturalism leads to careless science, …

The Importance Of Ritual According To Alumni At A Southern Liberal Arts University, Shane C. Pruitt
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This study sought to understand how alumni members from a small, private university in the southern region of the United States experienced campus rituals during their college career as well as currently engage with the institution via rituals post-graduation. The following central research question guided the inquiry in an effort to describe the essence of alumni participation at Southern Liberal Arts University (SLAU): in what ways do alumni perceive the importance of campus rituals in both the student and alumni experience? This study utilized a social constructivist lens adopting a phenomenological approach to qualitative analysis including the use of interviews, …
Pequot Cultural Entanglement In 17th-Century Connecticut, William A. Farley
Pequot Cultural Entanglement In 17th-Century Connecticut, William A. Farley
Doctoral Dissertations
The primary goal of this dissertation is to explore the nature of cultural change and continuity during the earliest years of colonial interaction in southern New England. It will focus primarily on the Pequot, a Native American polity who in the early 17th-century controlled territories in present-day Connecticut and Rhode Island. The dissertation utilizes a combination of artifactual, ecofactual, spatial, and historical data to elucidate the ways that the Pequot mitigated the harsh realities of early colonial life including during times of war. This dissertation adds substantively to the scholarship of indigenous architecture, household archaeology, cultural entanglement, and …

Signs are everywhere and are clear that we are heading toward uncertainty. People are speculative on either our immediate or long-term future. Our life situation is deteriorating momentarily. We admit that we are in a crisis. The author addresses our contemporary plight by drawing our attention to the final moments of ancient Israel on their forty-year journey from Egypt to Canaan. The author focuses on this historical biblical event and draws practical lessons that amazingly impact people today who are living in the very last stages of the earth’s history. He shows that we can learn from past history and …

Afro-Peruvian Creoles: A Social And Political History Of Afro-Descended Peruvians In An Era Of Nationalism And Scientific Racism, Daniel S. Cozart
History ETDs
This dissertation analyzes the history of Afro-descended Peruvians after the abolition of slavery in 1854 until the census of 1940, which asserted that Afro-Peruvians comprised less than two percent of the national population. It combines analyses of primary and secondary sources to examine Afro-Peruvian historical agency, demographic erasure and the politics of censuses, contested definitions of race and citizenship, self-representation in politics, culture, and the arts, as well as the labor history of Afro-Peruvians. The dissertation builds on the framing of Atlantic History to revise prior assumptions that Afro-Peruvians nearly disappeared from census records in the twentieth century because they …

Texas-Mexico Border Cultural Production: Ethnographic Aesthetics And Modernity In Folklore, Literature, And Film, Margie Montañez
Texas-Mexico Border Cultural Production: Ethnographic Aesthetics And Modernity In Folklore, Literature, And Film, Margie Montañez
American Studies ETDs
This dissertation develops the trope of an ethnographic aesthetic to dissect the cultural production of Jovita González, Américo Paredes, and more recent works by Alicia Gaspar de Alba and Lourdes Portillo. The dissertation argues that Texas-Mexican cultural production actively produces knowledge. In other words, when understood within the framework of ethnographic aesthetics, Texas-Mexican border cultural anticipates and imagines local futures in a constant shifting colonial space. Texas-Mexico border cultural production is not passive or residual but is in fact active and emergent.
The dissertation situates Texas-Mexico border cultural production as responding to and within post-national American Studies discourse that “stresses …

Evidence-Based Research And Delayed Cord Clamping: Implications For Cross-Cultural Education, Research, And Policy, Mary Ann Faucher
Evidence-Based Research And Delayed Cord Clamping: Implications For Cross-Cultural Education, Research, And Policy, Mary Ann Faucher
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Purpose: Conduct an educational capacity building research initiative for nurse midwives in India to improve iron status of newborns by delaying the clamping of the umbilical cord at birth. In India, iron deficiency affects nearly 80% of reproductive aged women and their offspring (Viveki 2012). Compared to immediate cord clamping, delayed cord clamping is a physiologic practice that also results in significantly enhanced serum levels of iron in newborns up to 6 months after birth (McDonald et al., 2013).
Methods: A two-part research design was implemented. Part 1 was quantitative utilizing a single group pre and post-test research design incorporating …
The Adaptive Value Of Complex Socio-Communicative Behavior, Sara A. Skiba
The Adaptive Value Of Complex Socio-Communicative Behavior, Sara A. Skiba
Master of Science in Integrative Biology Theses
Human spoken language represents the most elaborate communication system, however the selection pressures leading to its emergence are still uncertain. Unlike humans, bonobos and chimpanzees do not have language. However, bonobos may have been subjected to similar selection pressures as early hominins, subsequent to their phylogenetic split from chimpanzees roughly 1.5 million years ago. The current study investigated the similarities and differences in sociality and communicative production between bonobos and chimpanzees in captive settings, using 9, 10-minute focal follows for each individual. Analyses revealed a significant positive correlation between social proximity score and total communicative signals produced, as well as …

Oldest Human Occupation Of Wallacea At Laili Cave, Timor-Leste, Shows Broad-Spectrum Foraging Responses To Late Pleistocene Environments, Stuart Hawkins, Sue O'Connor, Tim Ryan Maloney
KIP Articles
The Wallacea Archipelago provides an extraordinary laboratory for the study of human colonisation and adaptation, yet few detailed archaeological studies have been conducted in the region that span the earliest phase of human settlement. Laili Cave, in northern Timor-Leste, preserves the oldest human occupation in this insular region with a cultural sequence spanning 11,200 to 44,600 cal BP. Small-bodied vertebrates and invertebrates were recovered to the lowest excavated levels, associated with highly concentrated stone artefacts. We report on human behavioural adaptations within the context of Pleistocene environments and changing landscapes using zooarchaeological, stone artefact, bathymetric, and experimental isotopic analyses. Results …

Moving Backwards, Moving Forward: The Experiences Of Older Filipino Migrants Adjusting To Life In New Zealand, Jed Montayre, Stephen Neville, Eleanor Holroyd
School of Nursing & Midwifery, East Africa
Purpose: To explore the experiences of older Filipino migrants adjusting to living perma- nently in New Zealand.
Method: The qualitative descriptive approach taken in this study involved 17 individual face- to-face interviews of older Filipino migrants in New Zealand.
Results: Three main themes emerged from the data. The first theme was “moving backwards and moving forward”, which described how these older Filipino migrants adjusted to chal- lenges they experienced with migration. The second theme was “engaging with health services” and presented challenges relating to the New Zealand healthcare system, including a lack of knowledge of the nature of health services, …
A Portrait In Black And White: An Analysis Of Race In The Adult Education Classroom, Tealia N. Deberry
A Portrait In Black And White: An Analysis Of Race In The Adult Education Classroom, Tealia N. Deberry
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Adult education is a reciprocal relationship between adult learners and adult education practitioners. As such, it is essential to understand the experiences of adult educators and adult education practitioners as they teach adults. This study focuses on how ideas about race and racism are examined in the graduate-level classroom and the adult learners’ experience as they focus on subject matter that challenges their assumptions and forces them to create new understandings about race. This study examines, through the portraiture methodology, the experiences of a White researcher and the adult learners engaging in dialogues about race in a CRT course.

The Influence Of Adult Attachment Orientations And Multicultural Competence On Higher Education Faculty Perceptions Of Ell Students, Helene Zongo Brou
All Student Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this investigation was to explore the influence of adult attachment orientations and multicultural competence on higher education faculty perceptions of ELL (English Language Learner) students. My primary research question is whether difficulty working with ELL students, from the perspective of faculty members, is associated with individual differences in adult attachment orientations or cultural competence. There were 60 faculty members from three Midwestern American universities who completed the survey. Faculty perceptions, the dependent variable, were measured through faculty reports of their attitudes towards ELL students and their perceived adequacy of the English language proficiency of ELL students. Examining The Use Of Amazon’S Mechanical Turk For Edge Extraction Of The Occlusal Surface Of Fossilized Bovid Teeth, George K. Thiruvathukal, Gregory J. Matthews, Maxwell P. Luetkemeier, Juliet K. Brophy
Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works
In order to reconstruct environments associated with Plio-Pleistocene hominins in southern Africa, researchers frequently rely upon the animals associated with the hominins, in particular, animals in the Family Bovidae. Bovids in southern Africa are typically identified by their teeth. However, identifying the taxon of a bovid tooth is challenging due to various biasing factors. Furthermore, inaccurate identification of fossil bovids can have significant consequences on the reconstructed paleoenvironment. Recent research on the classification of bovid fossil teeth has relied on using elliptical Fourier analysis to summarize the shape of the outline of the occlusal surface of the tooth and the …

The Living Syllabus: Rethinking The Introductory Course To Art History With Interactive Visualization, Caroline Bruzelius, Hannah L. Jacobs
Art History Pedagogy & Practice
This essay describes an experiment in adopting mapping and timeline technologies in the Introduction to Art History course taught at Duke University. The creation of an interactive, “living,” syllabus in Neatline and Omeka allowed us to embed maps, course powerpoints, links to museum websites, news articles, videos, and clips from movies. In this article, we describe how the integration of mapping tools and multimedia transformed our approach to the discipline of Art History, enabling us to engage with trade and exchange networks for raw materials, artistic ideas and motifs, and the art market.
Subjectivity Vs. Use: A Heideggerian Critique Of Sartrean Values, Laura M. Bruce
Subjectivity Vs. Use: A Heideggerian Critique Of Sartrean Values, Laura M. Bruce
Episteme
Dostoevsky laments: is everything truly permitted? This article illustrates how Heidegger avoids the phenomenological and ethical deficiencies found in Sartre’s philosophy. The author argues that a rejection of ethical absolutes does not inevitably lead to Sartrean relativism, because Heidegger’s account of Being critiques Sartre and considers shared practices of ordinary experience, which is necessary for values and ethics. Sartre’s phenomenology is characterized by Husserl’s influence and the subject/object distinction that finds values to arise necessarily from Nothingness. The author exposes why Sartre believes what he does and why Heidegger provides a substantially different ontology. Contrary to Sartre’s problematic phenomenology, Heidegger …
