Geographically Apart, Attitudinally Very Close: A Comparison Of Attitudes Toward Animals Between Romania And Mexico City, Alina Simona Rusu, Denisa Pop, Dennis C. Turner
People and Animals: The International Journal of Research and Practice
Among other regions, Romania and Mexico (particularly Mexico City) are often cited as problematic areas in surveys and reports on the growing population of stray animals in urban areas. The aim of our study was to adapt for Romanian and Spanish languages usage of an instrument that includes significant psychological and social dimensions of the attitudes toward animals (i.e., Attitudes toward Animals questionnaire [ATA]; Fehlbaum, Waiblinger, & Turner, 2010; Turner, 2010) and compare these attitudes between two countries that are confronted with similar situations regarding stray animals (dogs and cats). ATA consists of 27 statements on nature conservation, wild animals, …

Speech Codes Theory, Tabitha Hart
Speech Codes Theory, Tabitha Hart
Faculty Publications
Rooted in the ethnography of communication and based on empirical research, speech codes theory is a theoretical/methodological tool for studying situated communication practices. Two important applications of speech codes theory are to reveal local cultures and to examine the ways in which people make use of communication to accomplish important goals pertaining to communal life. Speech codes theory offers researchers a systematic approach to describing, interpreting, analyzing, and comparing local communicative practices and the cultures which they instantiate.

Mexican Working-Class Literature, Or The Work Of Literature In Mexico, Eugenio Di Stefano
Mexican Working-Class Literature, Or The Work Of Literature In Mexico, Eugenio Di Stefano
Foreign Languages and Literature Faculty Publications
Working-class literature has never had a wide audience in Mexico, always overshadowed by other types of literature, such as the novel of the Mexican Revolution, the regionalist novel, and the indigenous novel. Nevertheless, there is no better place, as this chapter will suggest, to consider the status of literature and its relationship to history and ideology than from the genre of work and the worker. Approaching working-class literature as an evolving genre in relation to different modernization projects, this chapter will map out similarities and point to differences between various labor literatures—including proletarian literature in the 1930s, the testimonio (a …
Paleo Journey: An Interactive Paleolithic Cave Art Experience. Using The User Experience (Ux) Design Process To Develop An Interactive And Immersive Paleolithic Cave Art Exhibit Suitable For Children Between Five (5) And Seven (7) Years Old., James J. Parrillo
Theses
Most European caves containing Paleolithic cave art paintings (dating from approximately 10,000 – 50,000 years BP) are no longer accessible to the general public, and their visitor centers often require lengthy travel for tourists. In addition, the interactivity associated with these exhibits largely focus upon computer screens, and not a tactile interface. This Thesis project seeks to create a prototype of a tactile interface on a mock cave surface using projection mapping and motion tracking.
In developing this exhibit, the user experience (UX) design process was used as a methodology for defining, researching and co-designing for a particular user segment. …
Progress For Whom, Toward What? Progressive Politics And New York City’S Mandatory Inclusionary Housing, Samuel Stein
Progress For Whom, Toward What? Progressive Politics And New York City’S Mandatory Inclusionary Housing, Samuel Stein
Publications and Research
In both its historical Progressive Era roots and its contemporary manifestations, U.S. urban progressivism has evinced a contradictory tendency toward promoting the interests of capital and property while ostensibly protecting labor and tenants, thus producing policies that undermine its central claims. This article interrogates past and present appeals to urban progressive politics, particularly around housing and planning, and offers an in-depth case study of one of the most highly touted examples of the new urban progressivism: New York City’s recently adopted Mandatory Inclusionary Housing program. This case serves to identify the ways in which progressive rhetoric can disguise neoliberal policies. …

On The Borders Of The Document: Trip To Turakia, Sabine Roux, Caroline Courbieres
Proceedings from the Document Academy
Analysis of documentary boundaries through the study of a set of documents related to the French Theater Company Turak. We describe as artistic documents the different documents that circulate during the creation of a play. There is an initial documentary collection comprised of the documentation for the performance on which the company relies to stage the play itself. At different stages of artistic creation, the company designs documents that are useful for the pursuit of creative reflection. The theater company also develops documents aimed at promoting the play for professionals and the public. Finally, the spectators also produce many documents …
Before The Antelope: Robert Pagès On Documents, Michael K. Buckland
Before The Antelope: Robert Pagès On Documents, Michael K. Buckland
Proceedings from the Document Academy
In 1951 Suzanne Briet wrote, with minimal explanation, that an antelope could become a document. In 1948 Robert Pagès (1919-2007) published an explanation of the same and related ideas. Textual and other graphic documents are about something, hence descriptive and derived. Animals and other objects are informative because they are illustrative of themselves either as specimens of a class (tokens of a type) or simply as particular individuals (“autodocuments”). Pagès’ career and ideas are briefly discussed.
The Materiality Of Documents And The Genocidal Continuum, Martin I. Nord, D. Grant Campbell
The Materiality Of Documents And The Genocidal Continuum, Martin I. Nord, D. Grant Campbell
Proceedings from the Document Academy
This paper uses Nancy Scheper-Hughes’s concept of the “genocidal continuum” to examine the materiality of documents in the context of Canada’s historical treatment of indigenous peoples. We discuss Canada’s Report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, using a hermeneutic perspective inspired by Hans-Georg Gadamer, and argue that the Report’s status as a material document plays a complex role in Canada’s acknowledgement of its past treatment of indigenous cultures and its current efforts at reconciliation. Virtually all societies contain philosophical, religious, and social norms that implore us to be responsible, ethical, or loving to everyone, even the stranger. But in cases …

The Spider: Anaylsis Of An Automaton, Susannah N. Munson
Proceedings from the Document Academy
[Editors' note: This paper is the 2017 winner of the Student Paper Award in Document(ation) Studies, http://documentacademy.org/award. Susannah Munson wrote the paper as a Kent State University, School of Information, Museum Studies student.]
The physical objects that surround us document vast amounts of information about themselves, their histories, and their roles in broader social and cultural contexts. To reveal this sometimes hidden information, we examine these objects through analytical frameworks that go beyond descriptive accounts to explore how an object existed and was culturally understood throughout its history. Document phenomenology (Gorichanaz and Latham, 2016), conceived in two Acts, …
Embodied Nonverbal Microaggressions From The Perspective Of Dance/Movement Therapists: Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, Rebecca A. Schultz
Embodied Nonverbal Microaggressions From The Perspective Of Dance/Movement Therapists: Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, Rebecca A. Schultz
Creative Arts Therapies Theses
This interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) study explored dance/movement therapist’s embodied experiences of nonverbal microaggressions and how they experience nonverbal microaggressions in the clinical relationship. Data were collected via hour-long, video recorded, in-person interviews of four (N = 4) current practicing dance/movement therapists in the Chicago area. Data analysis was conducted using IPA of verbal and movement data where five key themes emerged (a) personal offense, (b) anger, and (c) curiosity towards experiences of nonverbal microaggressions; and microaggressions have the potential to both (d) strengthen and (e) harm the clinical relationship. Their experiences implicate the vital role the body plays in …

Contemporary Trends In Management Education Versus Student Expectations, Agnieszka Postuła
Studia i Materiały Wydział Zarządzania Uniwersytet Warszawski
Modern universities are experiencing constant changes which are extremely meaningful nowadays. These changes reflect on the further directions of the management education development in a broad context. This paper presents the results of research on the condition of management education in the students’ perception. The methodology of this research was inspired by ethnography and based on anthropological interviews (12 conducted with first-year students and 13 with last-year students). They pointed out some university domains insufficiently supervised by the academic authorities both financially and mentally. The conclusions presented in the text are based on the expectations of students confronted with the …

Face To Face: Painting Basque Identity In The Diaspora, Zoe Bray
Face To Face: Painting Basque Identity In The Diaspora, Zoe Bray
BOGA: Basque Studies Consortium Journal
I draw on my experience of painting portraits to reflect on the Basque diaspora today. Whilst living in different countries, I have painted Basque individuals that I have met through Basque organizations, through common friends in the Basque Country, or through “non-Basque” people who introduce us presuming that as fellow Basques we have something in common. We are thus brought together through the networks that typically define a diaspora. At the same time, Basque identity in the diaspora, as I have come to understand - and paint - it, is a personal and contextual experience. In this article, I offer …
Subject — Not Only Object — Of Study: Basque Studies, Aitor Anduaga
Subject — Not Only Object — Of Study: Basque Studies, Aitor Anduaga
BOGA: Basque Studies Consortium Journal
To establish a discipline implies a responsibility. Whose is it? As vascólogos (or experts in Basque studies) and vascófilos (or scholars of the Basque language), our first thought should be addressed to discern the Basque studies as an object of study or as a subject of study. This distinction is fundamental. The historical review of the condition of object and/or subject in these studies reveals a crucial feature that defines both us and the Basque studies: our renunciation of their status of subject. This paper suggests a double task to address this deficiency: instituting, not renouncing, Basque studies as a …

In Search Of Lasting Calmness: How Sustainable Is The Federal Government’S Amnesty Program As A Peace Strategy In The Niger Delta Region Of Nigeria?, Lasisi Raimi, Nwoke N. Bieh, Kidi Zorbari
International Journal of African Development
The exploitation of natural resources and the associated marginalization of indigenous occupants of areas with such endowments continue to act as major driving forces for conflicts around the world, especially in Africa. In Nigeria’s Niger Delta Region, the major triggers of resource-based violent conflicts have been the subject matter of many academics and policy analysts. With the introduction of several peace strategies especially the Federal Government of Nigeria’s Amnesty Program notwithstanding, pockets of violent activities have generated questions as to the sustainability of the program. This study examines the sustainability of the Federal Government’s Amnesty Program in the Niger Delta …
Beyond No Fracking: An Anthropological Study Of Individuals Pursuing Sustainable Lifestyles In Eastern Kentucky, Meg Carter
Honors Theses
This study combines research and oral histories that were conducted with eight individuals in Kentucky who are pursuing sustainable lifestyles through practicing methods such as homesteading, living off-the-grid, permaculture, and natural farming techniques. The paper provides a brief history of homesteading and details how the homesteading of today differs from off-the-grid living. It also provides some of the history of Eastern Kentucky and gives insights into the history of homesteading and sustenance farming in the area. The unrehearsed oral history interviews share information that includes, but is not limited to, interviewees’ reasons for why and how they began their transition …

Understanding A Discourse Marker In Quito, Ecuador, Hannah Jesberger
Honors Projects
The present research project examines the possible factors to explain the word-final /f/ in Ecuadorian Spanish including but not limited to: where it is used, who uses it (gender, age ranges, social class), and with which words it is most commonly used. As the first extensive research study on the word-final /f/, the project may lead to other investigations of this phenomenon and other features of Ecuadorian Spanish. In addition, if there are other variations of the marker pues in the Spanish varieties spoken in different regions and/or countries, researchers can use this present study as basis to analyze the …

Building Globally Accepted Local Brands And Locally Authentic Global Brands, Ellen Schmidt-Devlin
Building Globally Accepted Local Brands And Locally Authentic Global Brands, Ellen Schmidt-Devlin
Student Scholarship
In academic literature, brands have been categorized as either global or local, driven primarily by the distance their businesses reach beyond their national borders. This difference is evaporating with the advent of digital marketing and ecommerce. Academics clearly recognize this changing landscape and have researched the impacts to consumer perceptions and identities, but literature has provided less strategic direction for global and local brand leaders as they compete head-to-head in the fast-paced global marketplace. This qualitative study of fifty executives in the global/local sports product industry reveals distinctly different paths taken by global brands toward local authenticity and local brands …

Engaging Collective Embodied Resilience, Enacting Ritual Movement Practice In A Social Change Process, Lauren Rose Milburn
Engaging Collective Embodied Resilience, Enacting Ritual Movement Practice In A Social Change Process, Lauren Rose Milburn
Creative Arts Therapies Theses
Twenty-first century American society requires individual and collective bodies to navigate large and often invisible systems of oppression despite the felt-influence of inequality, injustice, and affective control. Drawing from convergent theories of social movements and dance/movement therapy, collective embodied resilience emerges as a dually activating and healing resource for change making. This qualitative research study utilized a participatory/action embodied artistic inquiry methodology to investigate how arts-activist co-researchers experience collective embodied resilience during participation in collective action. Employing arts-based methods of data collection and analysis, coresearchers explored collective embodied resilience to generate and share an accessible ritual movement practice within a …
