Biosorption And Bioreduction's Impact On The Mobility Of Uranium And Cesium, Sarah Tandy Hennessy
Biosorption And Bioreduction's Impact On The Mobility Of Uranium And Cesium, Sarah Tandy Hennessy
All Theses
Microbial interactions with radionuclides in the environment are multi-faceted and play an important role on the fate and the extent of transport of these metals within the biosphere. Understanding how these biotic interactions affect radionuclides could prove useful in developing more suitable waste containment facilities and improve the overall risk management strategies at legacy waste sites around the world. This study investigates two microbial interactions with these metals: biosorption and bioreduction. To elucidate the impact of biosorption on uranium and cesium, active and inactive biomass were analyzed using batch sorption experiments in the presence of complexing ligands, EDTA and citrate, …
Modeling Clemson Football Traffic: New Techniques For Small Communities, Stephen Daniel Fry
Modeling Clemson Football Traffic: New Techniques For Small Communities, Stephen Daniel Fry
All Theses
Many communities host planned special events that generate several times the communties' AADT around the event period (e.g. pro and college football games). Larger metropolises benefit from ITS to collect data from, model, plan for, and analyze potential solutions to event-caused congestion. The smaller communities, which do not have the resources for traffic management centers, could benefit from more cost-appropriate methodologies. This thesis presents a cost-effective methodology for traffic data collection before and after these events. Modelers can then use this data in a microsimulation package, such as VISSIM, to model how the transportation network performs during this period, to …
Colleges And Universities: Prime Habitat For Hunter Recruitment And Retention, Brett Jonathon Stayton
Colleges And Universities: Prime Habitat For Hunter Recruitment And Retention, Brett Jonathon Stayton
All Theses
Hunting has played a prominent role throughout American history and continues to serve many important social, economic, and ecological functions in our society today. However, hunting participation in the United States is in a gradual state of decline. Today, less than 5% of the population hunts. In hopes of reversing these trends, many state fish and wildlife agencies, conservation organizations, and hunting and shooting sports industries have increasingly invested in new programs designed to enhance the recruitment, retention, and reactivation (R3) of new hunters from non-traditional hunting backgrounds. For example, many R3 initiatives have been designed to focus on women, …
Locating Stable Sites: Climate Refugia In The Southern Appalachians, Alexander Harper Nelson
Locating Stable Sites: Climate Refugia In The Southern Appalachians, Alexander Harper Nelson
All Theses
Climate change continues to be one of the most challenging threats to global biodiversity and species persistence. In response, conservation design researchers and applied practitioners have recently begun to call for the identification of critical areas of stable climatic and environmental conditions that may preserve the platform of current climate dynamics, and promote the adaptation and dispersal of diverse taxa across the landscape. Due to their historically buffered and resilient features, climate refugia are considered valuable conservation targets that may function as robust bastions for climatically-sensitive endemic species. In this thesis research, I have worked to define the potential stability …
Analyzing The Biomechanical Nature Of Thoracic Kyphosis And Other Mid-Sagittal Spinal Deformities Using Finite Element Analysis, Jaylin M. Carter
Analyzing The Biomechanical Nature Of Thoracic Kyphosis And Other Mid-Sagittal Spinal Deformities Using Finite Element Analysis, Jaylin M. Carter
All Theses
Thoracic kyphosis is the mid-sagittal misalignment in the human thoracic spine. Occurring in both adults and children, this spinal deformity is caused by the likes of poor posture, genetics, osteoporosis and intervertebral disc degeneration. This disease results in the patient having a rounded or hump back appearance causing strain on muscles, internal organs and improper walking gate. Corrections for this condition involve surgical implantation of metallic hardware to straighten the patient's posture. However, this treatment does not come without its own drawbacks such as a retrogressive forward head posture (FHP) which can occur post-surgery. With the assistance of computer aided …
Building A Carbon Footprint Of Clemson University's Main Campus, Raeanne June Clabeaux
Building A Carbon Footprint Of Clemson University's Main Campus, Raeanne June Clabeaux
All Theses
Greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories have become a popular means for colleges and universities to better understand their environmental impact and quantify sustainability efforts. Clemson University is one of the many institutions that signed the American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment, which explicitly calls for a comprehensive inventory of GHG emissions to be created. In the past, Clemson University has contracted an external consulting firm to quantify Clemson's GHG emissions, however, a transparent method of calculating emissions is needed. Carbon footprinting is an effective method to measure GHG emissions, and carbon footprinting of higher education institutions is currently an underdeveloped …
Kingdom Rush Tribute: Porting A 2d Tower Defense Game To A 3d World Using Unreal Engine 4, Christian Stith
Kingdom Rush Tribute: Porting A 2d Tower Defense Game To A 3d World Using Unreal Engine 4, Christian Stith
All Theses
Video game remakes are a popular modern phenomenon in which an existing game is remade to target a different platform, a higher resolution, or simply a different audience. Seldom, however, are video games remade into a different genre altogether. In this paper, we describe the process of remaking Kingdom Rush, a popular top-down 2D tower defense game, into a 3D third-person shooter in Unreal Engine 4. In addition to recreating all visual components of the game in 3D, this process revealed several challenges that arose related to transferring the gameplay from a 2D screen to a 3D world. We describe …
Multifuntional Nanotherapeutics For The Combinatorial Drug And Gene Therapy In The Treatment Of Glioblastoma Multiforme, Breanne Hourigan
Multifuntional Nanotherapeutics For The Combinatorial Drug And Gene Therapy In The Treatment Of Glioblastoma Multiforme, Breanne Hourigan
All Theses
Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), a grade IV glioma, is the most common primary brain tumor, affecting about 3 out of 100,000 persons per year in the United States. GBM accounts for about 80% of primary malignant brain tumors, and is also the most aggressive of malignant brain tumors. With exhaustive treatment, survival only averages between 12 and 15 months, with a 2-year survival rate less than 25%. New therapeutic strategies are necessary to improve the outcomes of this disease. Chemotherapy with temozolomide (TMZ), a DNA alkylating agent, is used as a first-line of treatment for GBM. However, GBM tumors develop resistance …
A Holistic Investigation And Implementation Of Fluidic Origami Cellular Solid For Morphing And Actuation, Hrishikesh Sane
A Holistic Investigation And Implementation Of Fluidic Origami Cellular Solid For Morphing And Actuation, Hrishikesh Sane
All Theses
Engineering applications of origami are gaining momentum in the recent decades. These applications range from nano-scale biomedical devices to large architectural and aerospace structures. Motivated by the rich kinematic behavior due to folding, the concept of fluidic origami was proposed as a versatile actuator. The idea is to seal deformable cylinders based on the origami patterns and apply pressure to achieve shape morphing and actuation. However, previous research relied on an idealistic kinematic model, which assumes that origami facets are rigid and have zero thickness so that the folding deformation is concentrated at the hinge-like creases. To address this issue, …
Effects Of Embryonic Arsenic Exposure On Killifish (Fundulus Heteroclitus) Growth, Feeding Behavior, And Intestinal Morphology And Cell Types, Kaleigh Caroline Sims
Effects Of Embryonic Arsenic Exposure On Killifish (Fundulus Heteroclitus) Growth, Feeding Behavior, And Intestinal Morphology And Cell Types, Kaleigh Caroline Sims
All Theses
Arsenic is found as a contaminant of drinking water, rice, and other crops. Epidemiological studies have shown that embryonic exposure to arsenic can cause changes in behavior and reductions in growth, but the mechanisms for these effects are not well understood. So, we were interested in examining potential mechanisms by which arsenic could be affecting growth. Additionally, while many studies have looked at higher levels of arsenic exposure, we wanted to focus on environmentally-relevant levels to see if these concentrations could have lasting consequences on growth, even after the exposure had ended. Killifish (Fundulus heteroclitus) were used as the model …
Abundance Modeling And Movement Of Smallmouth Bass In A Regulated Section Of The Broad River, Sc, Seth Mycko
Abundance Modeling And Movement Of Smallmouth Bass In A Regulated Section Of The Broad River, Sc, Seth Mycko
All Theses
Dams and altered flow regimes impact riverine fish. In addition to ecological impacts, unpredictable changes in flow influence the ability to access rivers and effectively sample fish populations. Fisheries management practices are often influenced by water regulation and hydropower generation, thus designing distinct methods of monitoring populations in regulated rivers is critical for effective management. Recurrent changes in river flow also influence behavior of fish inhabiting the flow-regulated portions of rivers, and such individual behavior may ultimately have population-level effects (e.g. fish abundance). I investigated population abundance and movement of smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieu) within a regulated portion of the …
Processing And Cooking On Lentil Prebiotics To Reduce Obesity, Niroshan Siva
Processing And Cooking On Lentil Prebiotics To Reduce Obesity, Niroshan Siva
All Theses
Lentil is a rich source of proteins, range of prebiotic carbohydrates including sugar alcohols (SA), raffinose family oligosaccharides (RFO), fructooligosaccharides (FOS), and resistant starch (RS), minerals, and vitamins. Research indicated that foods rich in prebiotics reduce obesity via modulating gut microbiota. The objectives of this thesis were 1) to determine the effects of lentil processing (dehulling, splitting, and cooking) on SA, RFO, FOS, and RS in three lentil market classes (red, green, and pardina), and 2) to determine the effects of lentil diet on rat body weight, percent body fat, plasma triglycerides (TGs) concentration, and change of fecal bacteria. Lentil …

Background and Rationale: Worldwide, human norovirus is a significant public health problem. One way to reduce the burden of illness attributed to norovirus is to educate consumers about prevention and control strategies. A common vehicle to do so is the Internet. Unfortunately, the accuracy of information posted to the Internet is not well known as no universal review system is in place. Aim and Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine if web-based Spanish-language norovirus educational materials targeting consumers were clearly written and accurate (aligned with evidence-based prevention and control strategies). The objectives were: (1) determine if the …
Selective Serotonin Re-Uptake Inhibitors Effects On Hybrid Striped Bass Predatory Behavior And Internal Chemistry, Lauren E. Stoczynski
Selective Serotonin Re-Uptake Inhibitors Effects On Hybrid Striped Bass Predatory Behavior And Internal Chemistry, Lauren E. Stoczynski
All Theses
Prescription drug use continues to increase across the United States. An important part of these medications are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) that function as anti-depressants and include drugs as citalopram (Celexa) and sertraline (Zoloft). SSRI's main mode of action is the inhibition of the serotonin reuptake transporter, causing a buildup of extracellular serotonin, one of the neurotransmitters in the central and peripheral nervous system. SSRIs can be considered persistent pollutants due to their continuous release from wastewater treatment effluent, drug manufacturing effluent, and agricultural runoff. Aquatic organisms can become non-target organisms when subjected to sub-lethal concentrations (low ppb to …
Defining The Immune Response And Cellular Pathologies In Multiple System Atrophy, Annamarie Valenti
Defining The Immune Response And Cellular Pathologies In Multiple System Atrophy, Annamarie Valenti
Masters Theses
Multiple System Atrophy (MSA) is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by the accumulation of misfolded α-synuclein (α-Syn) in oligodendrocytes of the central nervous system (CNS). A previous study in our lab used Affymetrix DNA microarray analysis to show the downregulation of various mitochondrial related genes, as well as the upregulation of genes involved in inflammatory/immune responses in MSA brain tissue. Therefore, it is hypothesized that an increased presence of immune proteins exists in the MSA brain accompanied by glial cell pathology including decreases in cell metabolism and cell viability. This study uses immunohistochemistry (IHC) to show the increased presence of CD68 …

Putative Mechanisms Of Atrazine's Toxic Interactions, Allison Schmidt
All Theses
Atrazine is an herbicide with several known toxic effects, including interactions with other chemicals. Atrazine increases the toxicity of several organophosphates and has been shown to reduce the toxicity of triclosan to D. magna in a concentration dependent manner. Atrazine is a potent activator in vitro of the xenobiotic-sensing nuclear receptor, HR96, related to vertebrate constitutive androstane receptor (CAR) and pregnane X-receptor (PXR). HR96 is a promiscuous nuclear receptor that is activated and inhibited by a variety of xenobiotics, and regulates transcription of Phase I-III enzymes, as well as genes involved in cholesterol homeostasis and triglyceride uptake. RNA sequencing (RNAseq) …
Determining The Relationship Between Mean Paraspinal Muscle Area Ratios And Percent Inter-Vertebral Foraminal Area Change In Flexion Versus Extension Positions Of Military Working Dogs Using Computed Tomography, Krystina Lynn Rowland
All Theses
Core (paraspinal) muscle strengthening exercises are increasingly applied as methods for management of lower back pain in military working dogs. However, more evidence-based studies are needed to justify these methods. A previous publication correlated increased flexion/extension changes in lumbosacral intervertebral foraminal area (positional foraminal stenosis) with lower back pain in dogs. Aims of this thesis project were to test hypotheses that 1) lumbosacral paraspinal muscle areas will be associated with positional changes in inter-vertebral foraminal areas, 2) muscle areas will significantly differ by positioning, and 3) lumbosacral angles and range of motion values will significantly differ by measurement technique. A …
Fabrication And Characterization Of Electrospun Anti-Proliferative Sutures For Vascular Applications, Erica Beal
Fabrication And Characterization Of Electrospun Anti-Proliferative Sutures For Vascular Applications, Erica Beal
All Theses
There are multiple surgical procedures that require vascular or microvascular anastomosis; some of which include free tissue transfer for soft tissue reconstruction, vascular grafts and bypass surgeries. The two most common complications with a procedure involving vascular anastomosis are thrombosis and stenosis. The current method to prevent anastomotic thrombosis is the use of an anti-coagulant such as heparin. Heparin has also shown to reduce vascular smooth muscle cell proliferation which is an initiating factor for intimal hyperplasia and ultimately, stenosis. Another well-known treatment for stenosis prevention in vascular injuries is the anti-proliferative drug, paclitaxel. Previously in our 4D lab, we …
Cellulose Reinforced Thermoplastic Composites By In-Situ Ring-Opening Polymerization, Shahab Kashani Rahimi
Cellulose Reinforced Thermoplastic Composites By In-Situ Ring-Opening Polymerization, Shahab Kashani Rahimi
Dissertations
Over the past two decades, the increasing concern about the negative environmental impacts of synthetic materials has led to rising interests in utilizing renewable natural resources to develop polymer materials with comparable properties and performance to their synthetic counterparts. One of the major fields of interest is polymer composites where the replacement of synthetic fibers with bio renewable natural fibers is of great potential. However, the processing difficulties, in terms of fiber dispersion and thermal stability have limited the application of cellulosic fibers to polymers with low processing temperatures which are mostly hydrophobic polymers. As a result, the true reinforcing …

An Evaluation Of The Emerald Shiner (Notropis Atherinoides) As A Bioindicator Of Urban Water Pollution In The Upper Niagara River, Rebecca J. Johnson
An Evaluation Of The Emerald Shiner (Notropis Atherinoides) As A Bioindicator Of Urban Water Pollution In The Upper Niagara River, Rebecca J. Johnson
Great Lakes Center Masters Theses
Using fishes as bioindicator species can be an effective method for detecting poor water quality in aquatic ecosystems. In the Niagara River, the emerald shiner (Notropis atherinoides) is a keystone species that is sensitive to ecosystem degradation and, therefore, fills the bioindicator role. Like other model bioindicators, emerald shiners are abundant and, when exposed to a persistent disturbance, exhibit individual signs of stress before the onset of population decline. This research evaluated the health of emerald shiners captured from the upper Niagara River, which is at times inundated with untreated sewage from combined sewer overflows (CSOs). Water samples …
Dietary Analysis Of The Emerald Shiner (Notropis Atherinoides) In The Upper Niagara River Using Fatty Acids, Stomach Contents, And Stable Isotopes, Colleen Kolb
Great Lakes Center Masters Theses
Describing ontogenetic and temporal shifts in diet is a fundamental step in understanding food web structure in any ecological community. I conducted a dietary analysis of the emerald shiner (Notropis atherinoides), a keystone species in the Niagara River (NY), using a detailed analysis of fatty acids combined with data on stomach contents and stable isotopes. For both 2014 and 2015, oleic acid and DHA were important fatty acids responsible for the majority of the differences among groups. There was a seasonal shift in fatty acids from relatively high levels of 22:5n-6 and DHA early in the season to …

Fit Or Fitting In: Deciding Against Normal When Reproducing The Future, Roxanne Mykitiuk, Isabel Karpin
Fit Or Fitting In: Deciding Against Normal When Reproducing The Future, Roxanne Mykitiuk, Isabel Karpin
Articles & Book Chapters
‘Normal’ is a contentious term. Descriptively, ‘normal’ represents ‘what is’ as a statistical average. However, the term also represents normative or prescriptive content about what is ‘right’ or ‘what should be’. Correspondingly, abnormality is a deviation from the norm. It is both a factual exception to the average and a value judgement about what is a ‘wrong’ state of being. Pursuing ‘normal’ or deciding against it can be a defining moment in the high technology environment of assisted reproduction. Here, we explore notions of normalcy articulated through legal and policy regimes around screening and testing of gamete and embryo donors. …

The discordance between genome size and the complexity of eukaryotes can partly be attributed to differences in repeat density. The Muller F element (∼5.2 Mb) is the smallest chromosome in Drosophila melanogaster, but it is substantially larger (>18.7 Mb) in D. ananassae. To identify the major contributors to the expansion of the F element and to assess their impact, we improved the genome sequence and annotated the genes in a 1.4-Mb region of the D. ananassae F element, and a 1.7-Mb region from the D element for comparison. We find that transposons (particularly LTR and LINE retrotransposons) …

While bushmeat hunting is critical to the livelihoods of millions of people throughout the tropical world, it is also a major threat to wildlife conservation. Assessing the sustainability of hunting has been a major goal in conservation biology but developing methods that accurately predict patterns of prey depletion has proven notoriously problematic. In this study, we sought to assess the sustainability of the hunting of indigenous Waiwai in Guyana by comparing results from the most commonly used static sustainability index, the production model, with results from spatially explicit biodemographic models for three indicator species; tapirs Tapirus terrestris, spider monkeys …

From the perspective of signal-detection theory, different lineup instructions may induce different levels of response bias (Clark, 2005). If so, then collecting correct and false identification rates across different instructional conditions will trace out the ROC – the same ROC that, theoretically, could also be traced out from a single instruction condition in which each eyewitness decision is accompanied by a confidence rating. We tested whether the two approaches do in fact yield the same ROC. Participants were assigned to a confidence rating condition or to an instructional biasing condition (liberal, neutral, unbiased, or conservative). After watching a video of …
The Effect Of Hemodynamic Force On The Maturation Of Blood Vessels During Embryogenesis, Rachel Lee Padget
The Effect Of Hemodynamic Force On The Maturation Of Blood Vessels During Embryogenesis, Rachel Lee Padget
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Throughout embryonic development, blood vessels are derived from endothelial cells by way of vasculogenesis. During angiogenesis, vessels remodel to form a hierarchy of large-diameter arteries that branch into small-diameter capillaries. In this maturation, vessels respond to unidentified signaling events to become surrounded with an outer layer of vascular smooth muscle cells (vSMCs). This results in arteries that have a thick vSMC layer, veins that have a thin vSMC layer, and capillaries that have a very thin or absent vSMC layer. What remains to be determined is the cause of the thicker layer of vSMCs around proximal arteries. Previous studies …
Geochemical Fractionation, Speciation, And Bioavailability Of Heavy Metals In Stream Sediments In Aurora, Mo, Miles Pearson
Geochemical Fractionation, Speciation, And Bioavailability Of Heavy Metals In Stream Sediments In Aurora, Mo, Miles Pearson
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Stream sediments from Chat Creek in Aurora, MO, part of the former Tristate Mining District, were digested via a sequential extraction procedure modeled after the Tessier method. Prior sampling had shown elevated levels of zinc, lead, and cadmium in sediments located near former chat piles. Metals in sediments were divided into four geochemical fractions: 1) easily exchangeable, 2) carbonate-bound, 3) iron-manganese oxides-bound, and 4) organic matter-bound. The distribution of the metals within these fractions can help predict the bioavailability and speciation of said metals. The majority of metals were contained in the third and to a lesser extent the fourth …
