Translation And Transformation: Uncovering The Source Of Alchemy’S Association With Magic Through A Study Of Its Translation Into Latin In The High Medieval Period, Morgan Taylor Greer
Translation And Transformation: Uncovering The Source Of Alchemy’S Association With Magic Through A Study Of Its Translation Into Latin In The High Medieval Period, Morgan Taylor Greer
University Honors Theses
Alchemy is one of the longest lived ideas and practices in intellectual history and one of the most habitually misunderstood. Until the 1950's historians of science considered alchemy to be pseudoscience or a facet of magic. Since then historians of alchemy have produced a considerable body of work that is mostly concerned with making corrections and establishing the scientific character of alchemy. Alchemists made significant contributions to chemistry, theology, and medicine. Alchemy itself influenced art, literature, and pop culture. The current literature on alchemy lacks one component, a study of the source of alchemy’s association with magic and relegation to …
Hunger Games: Policies To Address Food Deserts In Rhode Island's Low Income Communities, Jessi Mcneill
Hunger Games: Policies To Address Food Deserts In Rhode Island's Low Income Communities, Jessi Mcneill
Pell Scholars and Senior Theses
This policy paper examines the global, health, and social implications of food deserts in the state of Rhode Island. This paper assesses the inception of the food desert phenomenon and draws attention to three policy options for the state. While there is sufficient research on food deserts in large cities like New York and Philadelphia, little information is available regarding the implications of food deserts and policy options available to provide low-income Rhode Islanders with healthy, affordable food. Research methodology consists of site visits and interviews, as well as research courtesy of the 2017 Rhode Island Food Strategy and nonprofit …
Habitat Use Of Blacktip Sharks (Carcharhinus Limbatus) At Fishing Piers, Kelsey L. Spencer
Habitat Use Of Blacktip Sharks (Carcharhinus Limbatus) At Fishing Piers, Kelsey L. Spencer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Blacktip sharks (Carcharhinus limbatus) can be observed near fishing piers throughout the summer along the northeast coast of South Carolina. These piers attract and support a wide variety of potential prey and sharks are able to forage on fishers’ discards with minimal energetic cost. I tagged 12 blacktip sharks with acoustic transmitters, monitored piers with acoustic receivers, and conducted pier-creel surveys to determine the habitat use of blacktip sharks at fishing piers, factors that influenced residence time and presence/absence at piers, and any cyclical patterns in visits to piers. Data were analyzed with pier association indices (PAI), mixed models, and …
Cultivating Cultural Exchange: Improving University Study Abroad Programs, Katherine Crawford
Cultivating Cultural Exchange: Improving University Study Abroad Programs, Katherine Crawford
Honors Theses
My affinity for culture, both foreign and domestic, has greatly shaped my life and future career path. As I have been frequently reminded, I did not take the “typical” exchange route. However, I accredit this atypical experience to my passion towards the subject. My first immersive cultural experience occurred during a yearlong, high school, Rotary led exchange to Bourges, France. Simply put, it changed my life. I encountered the culture first hand, accepting a new normal: bisous greetings, daily baguettes, and a well-structured hierarchy. Within six months, I considered myself fluent in the language. I lived with French families, was …
Trajectories Of Change In Mediterranean Holocene Vegetation Through Classification Of Pollen Data, Ralph M. Fyfe, Jessie Woodbridge, C. Neil Roberts
Trajectories Of Change In Mediterranean Holocene Vegetation Through Classification Of Pollen Data, Ralph M. Fyfe, Jessie Woodbridge, C. Neil Roberts
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
© 2017 Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature Quantification of vegetation cover from pollen analysis has been a goal of palynologists since the advent of the method in 1916 by the great Lennart von Post. Pollen-based research projects are becoming increasingly ambitious in scale, and the emergence of spatially extensive open-access datasets, advanced methods and computer power has facilitated sub-continental analysis of Holocene pollen data. This paper presents results of one such study, focussing on the Mediterranean basin. Pollen data from 105 fossil sequences have been extracted from the European Pollen database, harmonised by both taxonomy and chronologies, and …

Using Mixed Effects Modeling To Quantify Difference Between Patient Groups With Diabetic Foot Ulcers, Rachel French
Using Mixed Effects Modeling To Quantify Difference Between Patient Groups With Diabetic Foot Ulcers, Rachel French
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
When diabetes progresses, many patients suffer from chronic foot ulcers. In a study described in Matrix Metalloproteinases and Diabetic Foot Ulcers (Muller et al., 2008), sixteen patients with diabetic foot ulcers were examined throughout a twelve week healing period. During this period, levels of matrix metalloproteinases (MMP-1), their inhibitors (TIMP-1), and the extracellular matrix in a wound area were measured at distinct time intervals for each patient. The ratios of these healing components are vital in determining whether a wound will heal or become chronic and never properly heal. Connecting Local and Global Sensitivities in a Mathematical Model for Wound …

Using Thermography To Monitor Inflammation As A Non-Invasive Supplementary Diagnostic Tool For Mild Traumatic Brain Injury In A Sprague Dawley Rat Model, Sonja Anne Jensen
Using Thermography To Monitor Inflammation As A Non-Invasive Supplementary Diagnostic Tool For Mild Traumatic Brain Injury In A Sprague Dawley Rat Model, Sonja Anne Jensen
Theses and Dissertations
Incurring high economic cost due to medical imaging modalities, there is a need for a low-cost, on site, diagnostic screening tool for the early detection of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). We hypothesize that patients with TBI will exhibit temporal and spatial gradient dynamics in the thermal signature on the surface of the skin, and that these dynamics reflect the inflammatory process. Hence, we implemented far-infrared (FIR) thermography using a blunt TBI rat model to analyze changes in the external, surface temperature gradient as an indication of internal inflammation. Results show a consistent increase in average surface temperature after 0.5 days …
A Game We Have To Lose: Overcoming The Harm Of Coming Into Existence, Hannah Strang
A Game We Have To Lose: Overcoming The Harm Of Coming Into Existence, Hannah Strang
Honors Projects
This paper explores the asymmetry of pleasure and pain as expressed in David Benatar’s book Better Never to Have Been, which is the basis for the argument that it is always an irreparable harm to bring a person into existence, and therefore we are morally obligated to pursue extinction as a species. I will examine Benatar’s argument in support of the asymmetry’s existence and analyze the strength of his argument for extinction overall, ultimately determining that his conclusion is too strong. I will defend this claim on the grounds that Benatar’s asymmetry implies the truth of two claims that must …

An Investigative Study Toward The Development Of A Crosslinked Porcine Xenograft Meniscus Total Replacement, Patrick Ehren Barton
An Investigative Study Toward The Development Of A Crosslinked Porcine Xenograft Meniscus Total Replacement, Patrick Ehren Barton
Theses and Dissertations
Meniscus damage is very common and eventually leads to the deterioration of the entire knee joint. The goal of this study was to provide evidence that supports a proof of concept for a decellularized porcine meniscal xenograft to be used as a treatment method for meniscal injury as a partial or full meniscus transplant. This research adapted an antigen removal protocol for articular cartilage to produce decellularized xenografts in 48% of the time and with no significant difference in DNA content as other current methods. DNA and GAG content, and the compression moduli were significantly lower in the xenograft than …

An Analysis Of The Perceptions Of Quality Professional Development And Its Relationship To Teacher Turnover, Job Satisfaction, And School Performance, Cammesha Rana Sims
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between educators' perceptions of the quality of Professional Development to which they have been exposed and the three outcomes related to school productivity, specifically teacher retention, job satisfaction, and student proficiency in basic skills. For that purpose, secondary data extracted from the 2013 administration of the Teaching, Empowering, Leading, and Learning Questionairre (TELL) were merged with pertinent school demographic information archived on the Tennessee Department of Education (TDOE) website. The results of the Hierarchial Multiple Regression indicated that the teacher- perceived quality of Professional Development appeared to make a substantial contribution …

Authentic Leadership, Research Integrity, And Institutions Of Higher Learning: Why Focusing On Departmental Leadership Is Critical For Preserving The Sanctity Of Science, Katherine I. Echols
Authentic Leadership, Research Integrity, And Institutions Of Higher Learning: Why Focusing On Departmental Leadership Is Critical For Preserving The Sanctity Of Science, Katherine I. Echols
Theses and Dissertations
One of the most overlooked and complex problems that universities and colleges face nation-wide is how to reduce and eliminate research misconduct. Because of the confidential nature of allegations of research misconduct and the high rate of underreporting, administrators at scholarly institutions struggle with understanding the cause of such behavior. Without a clear picture of the prevalence of misconduct or the barriers to reporting, leaders at institutions of higher learning find themselves at a disadvantage when dealing with these problems. This uncertainty coupled with a growing regulatory emphasis from federal funding agencies, results in a reactionary approach while questionable practices …
Effect Of Water Temperature, Angling Time, And Dissolved Oxygen Concentration On The Survival Of Angled And Tournament-Handled Largemouth Bass, Kevin Randy Keretz
Effect Of Water Temperature, Angling Time, And Dissolved Oxygen Concentration On The Survival Of Angled And Tournament-Handled Largemouth Bass, Kevin Randy Keretz
Theses and Dissertations
Largemouth Bass Micropterus salmoides is the most sought after species by recreational anglers in the United States. Survival of angled and tournament-handled Largemouth Bass is related to numerous factors; however, the independent effects of water temperature, angling time, and live well dissolved oxygen concentration on survival have not been measured. Survival was evaluated in simulated catch and release and tournament trials over the range of temperatures encountered by Largemouth Bass anglers (17-33°C) while also testing independent effects of angling time, live well temperature, and live well dissolved oxygen treatments. Caught-and-released Largemouth Bass experienced 100% survival at temperatures ≤33°C after 1 …
An Application Of Roger Ulrich's Methods: Designing A Healing Garden For African American Women Living In Low-Income Public Housing, Juriel Annishia Rogers
An Application Of Roger Ulrich's Methods: Designing A Healing Garden For African American Women Living In Low-Income Public Housing, Juriel Annishia Rogers
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this preference study is to identify the effects that the presence of a healing garden may have, on the perceived stress of African American women living in in low-income public housing. Literature states that women who live in public housing experience higher rates of malnutrition, fatigue, susceptibility to infection, and premature death (Adler et al., 1994; Whelch and Kneipp, 2005). Few of these studies address healing gardens as solutions. The explanation of behavior while visiting a healing garden in this study will help to identify particular aspects of gardens that are perceived as therapeutic. This research compared …
Does Prior Nssi Moderate The Relationship Between Alcohol Intoxication, Pain, And Deliberate Self-Harm?, Matthew A. Timmins
Does Prior Nssi Moderate The Relationship Between Alcohol Intoxication, Pain, And Deliberate Self-Harm?, Matthew A. Timmins
Theses and Dissertations
Experimental studies suggest alcohol facilitates deliberate self-harm (DSH). One explanation might be that alcohol increases pain tolerance (PT), which may then lead to DSH. This study aimed to examine whether PT mediated the relationship between alcohol and DSH. Further, alcohol is neither necessary nor sufficient to self-harm. Given past non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a good predictor of future DSH, NSSI may moderate these relationships. This study also aimed to examine if mediation was conditional upon past NSSI. Participants (106 men and 104 women) reported on past NSSI and received a drink sufficient to produce target blood-alcohol content (BAC = .000%, …
Application Of Food-Grade Ingredient Treated Nets To Control Tyrophagus Putrescentiae (Schrank) (Sarcoptiformes: Acaridae) Infestations On Dry Cured Hams, Xue Zhang
Theses and Dissertations
Tyrophagus putrescentiae (Schrank) (Sarcoptiformes: Acaridae), also known as the ham mite, may infest dry cured hams during the aging process. The fumigant methyl bromide is currently used to control mite infestations, but eventually will not be available for use since it contributes to the depletion of the ozone layer. The use of ham nets treated with xanthan gum, carrageenan, propylene glycol alginate, propylene glycol (PG), and lard were evaluated for their impact on mite orientation to or oviposition on treated or untreated ham cubes, mite reproduction and population growth over a 10-week period. When nets were infused with gum and …
An Examination Of Child Abuse Disclosures In Mississippi: The Effects Of Child And Interviewer Characteristics, Morgan Colley
An Examination Of Child Abuse Disclosures In Mississippi: The Effects Of Child And Interviewer Characteristics, Morgan Colley
Theses and Dissertations
Each year, hundreds of thousands of children fall victim to child abuse in the United States, most often perpetrated by a parent or legal guardian (Children’s Bureau – An Office of the Administration for Children and Families, 2015). The current project used secondary data from a Children’s Advocacy Center to explore abuse disclosure rates in forensic interviews. The three main objectives of this project were as follows: 1) to determine whether children with certain demographic characteristics (i.e., race, gender, and age) were more likely to disclose abuse, 2) to determine whether interviewers with certain demographic characteristics (i.e., race and age) …
"A Grave Subject:" Hollywood Cemetery And The Ideology Of Death In Mid-Nineteenth Century America, Kelli Brooke Nelson
"A Grave Subject:" Hollywood Cemetery And The Ideology Of Death In Mid-Nineteenth Century America, Kelli Brooke Nelson
Theses and Dissertations
During the nineteenth century, Americans began to develop a new relationship with death. Urbanites were less confronted with the constant presence of the dead and dying than they had in the past. A new trend in cemeteries also developed as a result. The Rural Cemetery Movement promoted the idea that the dead should be buried amongst a natural setting that was pleasing and calming to visitors. The first few initial cemeteries were an immediate success, but this was not the case in Richmond, Virginia. Although the developers had grand ideas about their cemetery project, Richmonders opposed the cemetery in the …

"Deep" South: Mammoth Cave, Kentucky, And Environmental Knowledge, 1800-1974, Alyssa Diane Warrick
Theses and Dissertations
Mammoth Cave in Kentucky is the longest known cave in the world. This dissertation examines the history of how scientists and non-scientists alike contributed to a growing body of knowledge about Mammoth Cave and how that knowledge in turn affected land use decisions in the surrounding neighborhood. During the nineteenth century visitors traveled through Mammoth Cave along with their guides, gaining knowledge of the cave by using their senses and spreading that knowledge through travel narratives. After the Civil War, cave guides, now free men who chose to stay in the neighborhood, used the cave as a way to build …

Ethnic Studies Research Paper Award
My paper is a narrative research essay that involves me interviewing my grandma about her time in Laos during the Secret War and her transition to America. Throughout the paper, I had conducted researches to support my points. It does relate to the field of ethnic studies because this paper basically explains how my people (Hmong) lived back then, and how they're adjusting to the new life here in America.
