Children’S Hospice: A Place To Stay, A Place To Play, Madalyn Faye Lillie
Children’S Hospice: A Place To Stay, A Place To Play, Madalyn Faye Lillie
Theses
Children diagnosed with terminal illness most often receive end-of-life care in a traditional hospital setting or at home due to the dearth of children’s hospices in the United States. Children hospices provide an environment that not only is aesthetically designed for children, but also is attentive to the specific physical and emotional needs of their special patients and their families. The purpose of this thesis is to define a model of children’s hospice that integrates the successful features of similar hospitals throughout the United States and adapts them to the writer’s home region in upstate New York. To accomplish this …

Findings From Nasa’S 2015-2017 Electric Sail Investigations, Bruce Wiegmann, Jason Vaughn, Todd Schneider, Michael Bangham, Andrew Heaton
Small Satellite Conference
Personnel from NASA’s MSFC have been investigating the feasibility of an advanced propulsion system known as the Electric Sail (E-Sail) for future scientific exploration missions. This team initially won a NASA Space Technology Mission Directorate (STMD) Phase I NASA Innovative Advanced Concept (NIAC) award and then a two-year follow-on Phase II NIAC award in October 2015. This paper documents the findings from this three-year investigation.
An Electric sail, a propellant-less propulsion system, uses solar wind ions to rapidly travel either to deep space or the inner solar system. Scientific spacecraft could reach Pluto in ~5 years, or the boundary of …

The Neuroprotective Compound P7c3-A20 Promotes Neurogenesis And Improves Functional Outcomes After Focal Cerebral Ischemia, Zachary Balmuth-Loris
Open Access Dissertations
Ischemic stroke is the second leading cause of death worldwide and the leading cause of adult long-term disability in the United States. Despite its prevalence, there are few therapeutic interventions available. The neuroprotective compound P7C3-A20 (A20) has been shown to reduce mature neuronal cell death while also increasing the net magnitude of postnatal neurogenesis in models of neurodegeneration and acute brain injury. A20 compounds demonstrate protection by enhancing the flux of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) in mammalian cells, a proposed therapeutic approach to treating cerebral ischemia. The studies carried out in this dissertation sought to investigate the effectiveness of A20 …

Cardio-metabolic disease, namely ischemic heart disease, stroke, obesity, and type 2 diabetes, represent substantial health and economic burdens. Almost one half of cardio-metabolic deaths in the U.S. might be prevented through proper nutrition. Plant-based (vegetarian and vegan) diets are an effective strategy for improving nutrient intake. At the same time, they are associated with decreased all-cause mortality and decreased risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, and coronary heart disease. Evidence suggests that plant-based diets may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease events by an estimated 40% and the risk of cerebral vascular disease events by 29%. These diets also …

Constructing An International Community, Monica Hakimi
Constructing An International Community, Monica Hakimi
Articles
What unites states and other global actors around a shared governance project? How does the group—what I will call an “international community”—coalesce and stay engaged in the enterprise? A frequent assumption is that an international community is cemented by its members’ commonalities and depleted by their intractable disagreements. This article critiques that assumption and presents, as an alternative, a theory that accounts for the combined integration and discord that actually characterize most global governance associations. I argue that conflict, especially conflict that manifests in law, is not necessarily corrosive to an international community. To the contrary, it often is a …

Braun (The ecological rationality of historical costs and conservatism. Accounting, Economics and Law: A Convivium, this issue) argues that the traditional accounting principles underlying the revenue-expense approach such as Historical Cost and Conservatism are ecologically rational in that they help organizations survive better in uncertain economic environments. More importantly, Braun argues that the revenue-expense approach generates new private information, which informs markets and makes them more effective (Hayek, 1945, The use of knowledge in society. The American Economic Review, 35(4), 519–530), as opposed to merely reflecting back market data under the asset-liability approach (e.g. Sunder, 2011, IFRS monopoly: …
Mechanisms Of Invasion And Competition In Anolis Sagrei And Anolis Carolinensis Lizards In Southeastern Louisiana, Jessica R. Edwards
Mechanisms Of Invasion And Competition In Anolis Sagrei And Anolis Carolinensis Lizards In Southeastern Louisiana, Jessica R. Edwards
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Invasive species can have a variety of effects on the behavior and ecology of native species. Currently in New Orleans, Louisiana, both A. sagrei and A. carolinensis lizards are relatively abundant, but the A. sagrei population is expanding rapidly. I used a combination of laboratory and field studies to investigate factors that might be influencing local dominance of invasive A. sagrei over native A. carolinensis populations, including habitat use, display behavior, interspecific aggressive interactions, and plasticity. When comparing display behavior and habitat use in anole populations across three field sites in southern Louisiana, I found differences in male display behavior …
The Blanket Of The Dark, Tracy L. Norwood
The Blanket Of The Dark, Tracy L. Norwood
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The Blanket of the Dark is a psychological thriller that explores the horrors of postpartum psychosis, a rare but serious illness a new mother can experience in the days and weeks following the birth of her child. The film is an intimate portrayal of the psychology of a new mother suffering from the hallucinations and delusions that are symptoms of this horrific and oftentimes undiagnosed illness. In the end, motherhood for women with undiagnosed postpartum psychosis is anything but joyful, and can lead to suicide and murder.
This paper is a candid analysis, a production report as it were, of …

Objective
The upregulated expression of heparin binding EGF-like growth factor (HB-EGF) in the vessel and circulation is associated with risk of cardiovascular disease. In this study, we tested the effects of HB-EGF targeting using HB-EGF-specific antisense oligonucleotide (ASO) on the development of aortic aneurysm in a mouse aneurysm model.
Approach and results
Low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR) deficient mice (male, 16 weeks of age) were injected with control and HB-EGF ASOs for 10 weeks. To induce aneurysm, the mice were fed a high fat diet (22% fat, 0.2% cholesterol; w/w) at 5 week point of ASO administration and infused with angiotensin …

Co-occurrence of closely related taxa on islands could be attributed to sympatric speciation or multiple colonization. Sympatric speciation is considered to be rare in small islands, however multiple colonizations are known to be common in both oceanic and continental islands. In this study we investigated the phylogenetic relatedness and means of origin of the two sympatrically co-occurring Zosterops white-eyes, the endemic Zosterops ceylonensis and its widespread regional congener Z. palpebrosus, in the island of Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka is a continental island in the Indian continental shelf of the Northern Indian Ocean. Our multivariate morphometric analyses confirmed the …

Operating Small Sat Swarms As A Single Entity: Introducing Soda, Tracie Conn, Andres Perez, Laura Plice, Michael Ho
Small Satellite Conference
NASA’s decadal survey determined that simultaneous measurements from a 3D volume of space are advantageous for a variety of studies in space physics and Earth science. Therefore, swarm concepts with multiple spacecraft in close proximity are a growing topic of interest in the small satellite community. Among the capabilities needed for swarm missions is a means to maintain operator-specified geometry, alignment, or separation. Swarm stationkeeping poses a planning challenge due to the limited scalability of ground resources. To address scalable control of orbital dynamics, we introduce SODA – Swarm Orbital Dynamics Advisor – a tool that accepts high-level configuration commands …

The Role Of P16 In Controlling Mammary Epithelial Cell Senescence And Brca1-Deficient Tumorigenesis, Alexandria Scott
Open Access Dissertations
A major risk factor of breast cancer is aging. Aging is caused partly by cellular senescence, a tumor suppressive mechanism that prevents the proliferation of cells at risk of transformation. p16INK4A (p16), an inhibitor of CDK4 and CDK6, plays a critical role in controlling senescence. Functional inactivation of p16 is frequently detected in human breast cancers. However, loss of p16 alone in mice does not result in mammary tumorigenesis. How p16 loss contributes to mammary cell aging and tumorigenesis in vivo is not fully understood. We reported that senescence was induced in mammary epithelial cells (MECs) during aging with increased …
Sustainability In Production: Exploring Eco-Creativity Within The Parameters Of Conventional Theatre, Tanja Beer, Dominique Hes
Sustainability In Production: Exploring Eco-Creativity Within The Parameters Of Conventional Theatre, Tanja Beer, Dominique Hes
Behind the Scenes: Journal of Theatre Production Practice
Contemporary ecological concerns bring with them an opportunity for innovation; to
rethink traditional practices and forge new approaches that not only strive for
sustainability, but also push intellectual and creative boundaries. Despite this, current
notions of sustainability are still dominated by suppositions of creative limitations; the
perception that sustainability and theatre do not mix is a common assumption. This
paper explores the possibilities of sustainable production practices within the
parameters of conventional theatre. Using a practice-led research project, Helicopter
(Melbourne Theatre Company, 2012), the investigation examines the designer’s
journey of integrating creative processes with eco-efficiency, aesthetics,
organisational considerations and director’s …
Examining The Relationship Between Mesohabitats And Freshwater Mussels In An East Texas River, Andrew R. Glen
Examining The Relationship Between Mesohabitats And Freshwater Mussels In An East Texas River, Andrew R. Glen
Biology Theses
North America is home to 302 unionoid species, with approximately 53 occurring in Texas, and are considered one of the most imperiled group of organisms in North America. Several hypotheses have been proposed to explain the spatial distribution of mussels within a stream reach, but only certain hydraulic characteristics appear to be correlated with their distribution. Emerging evidence indicates that freshwater mussels may use flow refugia to remain embedded during high flow events. As the use of hydraulic variables to characterize mussel habitat becomes more widespread, it may be useful to implement sampling that captures these measures. One option may …

Background: Despite many animal studies and clinical trials, mortality in sepsis remains high. This may be due to the fact that most experimental studies of sepsis employ young animals, whereas the majority of septic patients are elderly (60 - 70 years). The objective of the present study was to examine the sepsis-induced inflammatory and pro-coagulant responses in aged mice. Since running exercise protects against a variety of diseases, we also examined the effect of voluntary running on septic responses in aged mice. Methods: Male C57BL/6 mice were housed in our institute from 2-3 to 22 months (an age mimicking that …

Toward A Decarceral Sexual Autonomy: Biopolitics And The Compounds Of Projected Deviance In Carceral Space, Raechel Tiffe
Journal of Prison Education and Reentry (2014-2023)
This essay examines the rhetorical and structural divides between the “inside” and “outside” carceral world as they exist within the intersections of racialized state violence and biopolitics. It is also a reflection on my embodied experience, as a volunteer and activist, inside penal and correctional facilities, not in an attempt to center my “freeworld” body as more important than the embodied experiences of incarcerated people, but rather to trouble that binary altogether and to use my experience as a perceived outsider to illuminate what I call the compounds of projected deviance. I will use my experiences working in jails …

One of the main questions in the humanities is how cultures and artistic expressions change over time. While a number of researchers have used quantitative computational methods to study historical changes in literature, music, and cinema, our paper offers the first quantitative analysis of historical changes in visual art created by users of a social online network. We propose a number of computational methods for the analysis of temporal development of art images. We then apply these methods to a sample of 270,000 artworks created between 2001 and 2010 by users of the largest social network for artÐDeviantArt (www.deviantart.com). We …
