We present unifying rules governing the efficient locomotion of swimming fish and marine mammals. Using scaling and dimensional analysis, supported by new experimental data, we show that efficient locomotion occurs when the values of the Strouhal (St) number St(=f A/U) and A∗(=A/L), two nondimensional numbers that relate forward speed U, tail-beat amplitude A, tail-beat frequency f , and the length of the swimmer L are bound to the tight ranges of 0.2–0.4 and 0.1–0.3, respectively. The tight range of 0.2–0.4 for the St number has previously been associated with optimal thrust generation. We show that the St number alone is …
Sand Dune Field Paleoenvironment, Paleoecology, And Human Environmental Interaction In The Middle Tanana River Valley Near The Gerstle River, Subarctic Alaska: The Late Glacial To The Middle Holocene, Robert C. Bowman
Anthropology
This study was conducted to explore paleoenvironmental change within the Gerstle-Sawmill Dune Field (GSDF), located just west of the Gerstle River in the middle Tanana River valley, Interior Alaska from the late Glacial to the middle Holocene. Specifically, this study was undertaken to document human-environment interaction on the landscape. Geoarchaeological methods were used in order to determine the history of sand dune development across the area, how the local ecological systems changed through time, and determine prehistoric human use of environment and response to environmental and ecological change. The data collected from these locations was used to create a model …

Multiphysics Simulation Of Low-Amplitude Acoustic Wave Detection By Piezoelectric Wafer Active Sensors Validated By In-Situ Ae-Fatigue Experiment, Yeasin Bhuiyan, Victor Giurgiutiu
Faculty Publications
Piezoelectric wafer active sensors (PWAS) are commonly used for detecting Lamb waves for structural health monitoring application. However, in most applications of active sensing, the signals are of high-amplitude and easy to detect. In this article, we have shown a new avenue of using the PWAS transducer for detecting the low-amplitude fatigue-crack related acoustic emission (AE) signals. Multiphysics finite element (FE) simulations were performed with two PWAS transducers bonded to the structure. Various configurations of the sensors were studied by using the simulations. One PWAS was placed near to the fatigue-crack and the other one was placed at a certain …

Surgical meshes, in particular those used to repair hernias, have been in use since 1891. Since then, research in the area has expanded, given the vast number of post-surgery complications such as infection, fibrosis, adhesions, mesh rejection, and hernia recurrence. Researchers have focused on the analysis and implementation of a wide range of materials: meshes with different fiber size and porosity, a variety of manufacturing methods, and certainly a variety of surgical and implantation procedures. Currently, surface modification methods and development of nanofiber based systems are actively being explored as areas of opportunity to retain material strength and increase biocompatibility …

Genomic Signatures Of Local Adaptation Reveal Source-Sink Dynamics In A High Gene Flow Fish Species, Katherine Cure, Luke Thomas, Jean-Paul A. Hobbs, David V. Fairclough, Winn Jason Kennington
Fisheries Research Articles
Understanding source-sink dynamics is important for conservation management, particularly when climatic events alter species’ distributions. Following a 2011 ‘marine heatwave’ in Western Australia, we observed high recruitment of the endemic fisheries target species Choerodon rubescens, towards the cooler (southern) end of its distribution. Here, we use a genome wide set of 14 559 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) to identify the likely source population for this recruitment event. Most loci (76%) showed low genetic divergence across the species’ range, indicating high levels of gene flow and confirming previous findings using neutral microsatellite markers. However, a small proportion of loci showed strong …

Water, one of the most vital elements of the environment, is severely polluted with different industrial wastes like heavy metal ions, dyes, oil, nitrogen containing compounds, sulfur containing compounds, pharmaceutical and personal care products etc. All of these contaminated elements pose a threat to not only human beings by causing different diseases, but also to the environment and other living organisms in water. In order to remove these contaminated waste products from water, researchers have found that adsorptive removal is better than other removal processes because of its relatively low cost, higher removal capacity with selectivity, easy and simple operation, …

Propaganda And Comic Books And Their Relationship With World War Ii, Shakeelah Rahmaan
Theses and Dissertations
Sequential art is a way of telling a story with images. Throughout history, telling stories by way of graphics has been conveyed in many different ways. Visual narratives began in caves as wall painting and hieroglyphs, and they evolved into newspaper comic strips, and then comic book magazines, and, in more modern times, graphic novels. Over time, many countries have had their own versions of a comic book, but for the United States of America, it became prominent in the 1930’s, and became a major component in World War II by effectively spreading propaganda to American citizens. During the years …

Arthropod Communities And Passerine Diet: Effects Of Shrub Expansion In Western Alaska, Molly Tankersley Mcdermott
Arthropod Communities And Passerine Diet: Effects Of Shrub Expansion In Western Alaska, Molly Tankersley Mcdermott
Biological Sciences
Across the Arctic, taller woody shrubs, particularly willow (Salix spp.), birch (Betula spp.), and alder (Alnus spp.), have been expanding rapidly onto tundra. Changes in vegetation structure can alter the physical habitat structure, thermal environment, and food available to arthropods, which play an important role in the structure and functioning of Arctic ecosystems. Not only do they provide key ecosystem services such as pollination and nutrient cycling, they are an essential food source for migratory birds. In this study I examined the relationships between the abundance, diversity, and community composition of arthropods and the height and cover of several shrub …
Divergence, Gene Flow, And The Speciation Continuum In Trans-Beringian Birds, Jessica F. Mclaughlin
Divergence, Gene Flow, And The Speciation Continuum In Trans-Beringian Birds, Jessica F. Mclaughlin
Biological Sciences
Understanding the processes of divergence and speciation, particularly in the presence of gene flow, is key to understanding the generation of biodiversity. I investigated divergence and gene flow in nine lineages of birds with a trans-Beringian distribution, including pairs of populations, subspecies, and species, using loci containing ultraconserved elements (UCEs). I found that although these lineages spanned conditions from panmixia to fully biologically isolated species, they were not smoothly distributed across this continuum, but formed two discontinuous groups: relatively shallow splits with gene flow between Asian and North American populations, no fixed SNPs, and lower divergence; and relatively deeply split …
Development Of Respiratory Centers In The Bullfrog Tadpole Brainstem, Mitchell D. Reed
Development Of Respiratory Centers In The Bullfrog Tadpole Brainstem, Mitchell D. Reed
Biological Sciences
Among vertebrates, rhythmic motor behaviors such as breathing, swallowing, and sucking are controlled by rhythm generators or neural oscillators located at various sites in the medulla of the brainstem. That all vertebrates exhibit these behaviors, leads investigators to hypothesize common ancestry for the cellular networks responsible for homeostatic rhythm generation in the brainstem. While the locations and functions of rhythm generating sites controlling some of these behaviors have been well investigated, details regarding the development of these sites remain largely unknown. Recent work has suggested that neural oscillators in the rostral and caudal medulla, which contribute to ventilation in amphibians, …

Taxonomy And Phylogeny Of The Rove Beetle Genus Phlaeopterus (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae: Omaliinae: Anthophagini), Logan J. Mullen
Biological Sciences
The rove beetle genus Phlaeopterus contained 15 species prior to this work, which are found in mountainous regions of northwestern North America, and in East Siberia for one species. These beetles can be found in perpetually cold, wet habitats, usually living in close association with permanent or long-lasting alpine snowfields. Very little is known of the life history of Phlaeopterus, but they have been observed on the surface of snowfields mating as well as feeding on windblown arthropods that have become stranded on snowfield's surface. In this thesis, I present a taxonomic revision of the genus Phlaeopterus as well as …
Networks Of Change: Extending Alaska-Based Communication Networks To Meet The Challenges Of The Anthropocene, Richard E. Hum
Networks Of Change: Extending Alaska-Based Communication Networks To Meet The Challenges Of The Anthropocene, Richard E. Hum
Communication
The Anthropocene is a contested term. As I conceptualize it throughout this dissertation, the Anthropocene is defined by an increased coupling of social and environmental systems at the global scale such that the by-products of human processes dominate the global stratigraphic record. Additionally, I connect the term to a worldview that sees this increased coupling as an existential threat to humanity's ability to sustain life on the planet. Awareness that the planet-wide scale of this coupling is fundamentally a new element in earth history is implicit in both understandings. How individuals and communities are impacted by this change varies greatly …

Characterizing The Diet And Population Structure Of Lampreys Lethenteron Spp. Using Molecular Techniques, Katie G. Shink
Characterizing The Diet And Population Structure Of Lampreys Lethenteron Spp. Using Molecular Techniques, Katie G. Shink
Fisheries
Lampreys contribute to the health of aquatic ecosystems and are targeted in both subsistence and commercial fisheries. Despite their ecological and commercial importance, the management and conservation of native lampreys have been largely overlooked. The goal of this study was to close current knowledge gaps of lamprey biology through the examination of Lethenteron spp. in Alaska. This study applied two molecular techniques, DNA metabarcoding and microsatellite genotyping, to (1) characterize the diet of marine-phase Arctic lamprey Lethenteron camtschaticum (N = 250) in the eastern Bering Sea and (2) investigate the population structure of larval lampreys Lethenteron spp. (N = 120) …

Effects Of A Standardized, Freeze-Dried Grape Powder In Adults With Metabolic Syndrome, Quinn Duclos
Master's Theses
Diets rich in fruits and vegetables have been correlated to lower disease risk. This is thought to be due to bioactive components such as: vitamin C, vitamin E, carotenoids, and polyphenols. Grapes are a food source of many bioactive components, including polyphenols. The effects standardized, freeze-dried, grape powder (GRAPE) were examined in adults with metabolic syndrome (MetS). Twenty men and women (aged 30-70 y) were instructed to consume 60 g/day of GRAPE (equivalent to 2.5 cups fresh grapes daily) or nutritionally-matched placebo powder in a randomized, placebo-controlled, crossover intervention study for 13 weeks. This included 2-week run-in, 4-week intervention (GRAPE …

"Cut - And That's A Wrap" - The Film Industry's Fleecing Of State Tax Incentive Programs, Randle B. Pollard
Akron Law Review
When film production costs in California skyrocketed in the 1990s, states began creating tax incentive programs to attract film industry production. Currently, thirty-seven states have some type of film industry incentives and twenty-two states offer film tax credits. The 2014 movie Divergent, based on a science fiction book trilogy that takes place in a future post-apocalypse Chicago, cost $85 million to create, $30 million of which was spent in Illinois. The film producers promised to produce 1,000 jobs and in return received over $5 million in Illinois film tax credits. Did the reduction of tax revenue collected by the state …
Tax Treaty Models - Past, Present, And A Suggested Future, Doron Narotzki
Tax Treaty Models - Past, Present, And A Suggested Future, Doron Narotzki
Akron Law Review
Most scholarly research on tax treaties deals with the question of whether tax treaties are essentially necessary and how they work to eliminate double taxation, attract foreign direct investments, and promote the exchange of information. Although these questions are important, each of them treats one specific aspect of tax treaties in a way that can be described as, at best, speculative. That specific aspect is the tax policy a country wishes to implement in each tax treaty. Although everyone assumes a policy exists, no one actually knows what the policy is or any other details regarding it. All too often, …

National Training Aircraft Symposium (NTAS)
Prior to a flight, pilots gather meteorological information in order to assess the weather conditions pertaining to their flight and to make decisions based on it. This information can come in various formats, such as text and graphical weather information. Research has shown that people have varying learning preferences and that most people prefer visual learning to verbal learning (i.e., graphical over text). It is hypothesized that this difference in learning preference can affect the way pilots interpret and apply the information they obtain prior to their flight. The researcher hypothesizes that graphical weather information has a greater, more positive …

Background
Decades of intensive genetic selection in the domestic chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus) have enabled the remarkable rapid growth of today’s broiler (meat-type) chickens. However, this enhanced growth rate was accompanied by several unfavorable traits (i.e., increased visceral fatness, leg weakness, and disorders of metabolism and reproduction). The present descriptive analysis of the abdominal fat transcriptome aimed to identify functional genes and biological pathways that likely contribute to an extreme difference in visceral fatness of divergently selected broiler chickens.
Methods
We used the Del-Mar 14 K Chicken Integrated Systems microarray to take time-course snapshots of global gene transcription …
