Spatial Soundscape Ecology: Application In A Paleotropical Rainforest, Jack Vanschaik Aug 2017

Spatial Soundscape Ecology: Application In A Paleotropical Rainforest, Jack Vanschaik

The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research

The world’s biodiversity is declining with much of the decrease attributed to human activity. The paleotropical rainforests of Borneo contribute 10% of the world biodiversity but are at risk of destruction due to logging and other human interests. Soundscape ecology, defi ned as the study of the composition of sounds in an environment, is a new fi eld that offers solutions for assessing biodiversity and disturbance. Spatial dynamics are an important component of an ecosystem, yet the link between spatial dynamics and soundscapes has not yet been studied. It should be possible to assess disturbance of an ecosystem by analyzing …

Water Contaminated With The Herbicide Atrazine: Alteration Of Cancer Associated Tumor Protein D52-Like 1 (Tpd52l1) Gene Using The Zebrafish Model, Devang Thanki Aug 2017

Water Contaminated With The Herbicide Atrazine: Alteration Of Cancer Associated Tumor Protein D52-Like 1 (Tpd52l1) Gene Using The Zebrafish Model, Devang Thanki

The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research

Atrazine is a commonly used herbicide in the Midwestern United States. Currently, Indiana uses about 26% of its land to grow corn, and atrazine is used in ample amounts, resulting in contamination of drinking water supplies. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has set the Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) at 3 parts per billion (ppb) in drinking water, but the herbicide is often found at higher concentrations. However, data suggests that atrazine can cause adverse health impacts even at 3 ppb. Previous studies from our laboratory in the zebrafish model system have shown atrazine alters gene expression associated with neuroendocrine …

The Role Of Vitamin D In Breast Cancer: Investigating Potential Inhibition Through Matrix Metalloproteinase 2, Hyesoo Chae Aug 2017

The Role Of Vitamin D In Breast Cancer: Investigating Potential Inhibition Through Matrix Metalloproteinase 2, Hyesoo Chae

The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research

Breast cancer remains the second leading cause of cancer death among women in the United States, with 99% of breast cancer patients surviving fi ve years after diagnosis if the tumor is localized. However, if the tumor has metastasized, the survival rate decreases to 22%. Epidemiological and animal studies, as well as previous studies from our laboratory in in vitro 3D cell culture models, support the hypothesis that vitamin D may inhibit breast cancer metastasis in humans, but the mechanisms remain unknown. The purpose of the present studies was to investigate the effect of the bioactive vitamin D metabolite, 1α,25-dihydroxyvitamin …

Agriculture, Water Pollution, And The Future Of Epa’S Regulatory Authority In A Post-American Farm Bureau Federation V. U.S. Epa America, Henry Brudney Aug 2017

Agriculture, Water Pollution, And The Future Of Epa’S Regulatory Authority In A Post-American Farm Bureau Federation V. U.S. Epa America, Henry Brudney

Seattle Journal of Environmental Law

Until the recent decision of American Farm Bureau Federation v. U.S. EPA, the EPA’s total maximum daily load (TMDL) regulation under the Clean Water Act contained no substantive standard for water quality. However, in this decision, the Third Circuit added such substantive criteria to the TMDL, which should have a monumental effect on the improvement of water quality standards in the United States.

Of Mines And Men: Toward A Foundational Theory Of The Rise, Evolution And Decay Of Property, Guillermo Arribas Irazola Aug 2017

Of Mines And Men: Toward A Foundational Theory Of The Rise, Evolution And Decay Of Property, Guillermo Arribas Irazola

Seattle Journal of Environmental Law

Why and how is property created? Through a historical analysis, this paper proposes that property is created not out of ideology, but by chance. Depending on the resources encountered by newcomers, a rising civilization will establish property through a centralized controlling government (a top-down system) or through people’s recognized possession (a bottom-up or Lockean system). In the former, the government will create and allocate property at its own discretion, while in the latter, the government will recognize and provide protection for the property of individuals.

When the Spaniards conquered Peru in the 1528, they found immense amounts of gold and …

The Disperata, From Medieval Italy To Renaissance France, Gabriella Scarlatta Aug 2017

The Disperata, From Medieval Italy To Renaissance France, Gabriella Scarlatta

Research in Medieval and Early Modern Culture

Rich with morose invectives, the Italian lyric genre of the disperata builds toward a crescendo of despair, with the speakers damning and condemning their beloved, their enemy, their destiny, Fortune, Love, and often themselves. Although Petrarch and Petrarchism have been amply analyzed as fertile sources for late Renaissance poets in France, the influence of the Italian disperata in this context has yet to receive proper scholarly attention. This study explores how the language and themes of the disperata - including hopelessness, death, suicide, doomed love, collective trauma, and damnations - are creatively adopted by several generations of poets from its …

Liturgical Drama And The Reimagining Of Medieval Theater, Michael Norton Aug 2017

Liturgical Drama And The Reimagining Of Medieval Theater, Michael Norton

Early Drama, Art, and Music

The expression "liturgical drama" was formulated in 1834 as a metaphor and hardened into formal category only later in the nineteenth century. Prior to this invention, the medieval rites and representations that would forge the category were understood as distinct and unrelated classes: as liturgical rites no longer celebrated or as theatrical works of dubious quality. If this distinction between liturgical rites and non-liturgical representations holds, should we not examine the works called "liturgical drama" according to the contexts of their presentations within the manuscripts and books that preserve them? Given the ways that the words "liturgy" and "drama" have …

Reconstruction Of Piñon-Juniper Forest Structure To Examine Historic Wildlife Habitat Characteristics In The Davis Mountains, Usa, Brian P. Oswald, John R. Lanham, James C. Kroll, Mohammed M. Bataineh, Yanli Zhang

Faculty Publications

Changes in piñon-juniper (Pinus spp., Juniperus spp.) communities across the southwestern United States have often decreased ecological diversity of the understory and increases of exotic species. Reconstructing age and establishment patterns provides essential understanding to guide treatments and management for anthropogenically-altered forests. The goal of this study was to determine how patterns of piñon and juniper growth in the Davis Mountains, Texas, varied over time and how this pattern influenced wildlife habitat of several indicator species. Establishment patterns and basal area growth progression were identified, canopy cover estimates regressed from pre-developed canopy regression equations to re-construct historic forest stand …

Understanding And Optimizing Growth And Development Of California Yellowtail (Seriola Dorsalis) In Aquaculture Using Physiological Tools, Laura Schwebel Aug 2017

Understanding And Optimizing Growth And Development Of California Yellowtail (Seriola Dorsalis) In Aquaculture Using Physiological Tools, Laura Schwebel

Theses

Physical fitness metrics were used to assess the health and development of California Yellowtail, Seriola dorsalis, in an aquaculture environment during two grow-out experiments. The first experiment sought to evaluate the effects of a common aquaculture deformity (an improperly inflated swim bladder) that has been hypothesized to impact energy allocation, growth, and development. Metrics including metabolic rate, critical swimming speed, feed conversion ratio, and growth rate, were monitored over a 32-week period in three groups of California Yellowtail: wild-caught (“wild”), healthy hatchery-reared (“inflated”), and hatchery-reared with uninflated swim bladders (“uninflated”). At the start of the grow-out period, wild fish …

Simplex Solutions For Optimal Control Flight Paths In Urban Environments, Michael D. Zollars, Richard G. Cobb, David J. Grymin Aug 2017

Simplex Solutions For Optimal Control Flight Paths In Urban Environments, Michael D. Zollars, Richard G. Cobb, David J. Grymin

Faculty Publications

This paper identifies feasible fight paths for Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems in a highly constrained environment. Optimal control software has long been used for vehicle path planning and has proven most successful when an adequate initial guess is presented flight to an optimal control solver. Leveraging fast geometric planning techniques, a large search space is discretized into a set of simplexes where a Dubins path solution is generated and contained in a polygonal search corridor free of path constraints. Direct optimal control methods are then used to determine the optimal flight path through the newly defined search corridor. Two scenarios …

Identity Behind Glass: The Second Gore Place Greenhouse, Sean P. Romo Aug 2017

Identity Behind Glass: The Second Gore Place Greenhouse, Sean P. Romo

Graduate Masters Theses

This thesis examines the second greenhouse at Gore Place, a historic country estate in Waltham, Massachusetts. Gore Place was owned by and named for Christopher and Rebecca Gore, members of the 18th- and 19th-century political and economic elite in New England. The greenhouse was constructed in 1806, and excavation at the site took place in 2004, 2008, and 2012. The latter two projects were data recovery excavations, which exposed portions of the greenhouse’s foundations and interior, as well as several features in the yard surrounding the building. Historic greenhouses were prestigious structures, financially accessible only to institutions, governments, and the …
