Pause With Paws: Implementation Of An Evidence-Based Animal Visitation Program At A Small Vermont University, Angela Smith Sep 2017

Pause With Paws: Implementation Of An Evidence-Based Animal Visitation Program At A Small Vermont University, Angela Smith

DNP and Student Works

This evidence-based practice change pilot project explored college student perceptions of the efficacy of an animal visitation program (AVP) toward reducing perceived stress. Using a quantitative, longitudinal pre- and post-intervention design, a convenience sample of students from a Vermont college were recruited to attend seven-weekly, 90-minute AVP meetings where they interacted with dogs in a casual environment, while practicing mindfulness techniques. Participants completed the Perceived Stress Survey (PSS-10) pre-, intra-, and post-intervention to measure student perceived stress; and the Center for the Study of Animal Wellness Pet Bonding Scale® adapted (CSAWPBS) intra-and post-intervention to measure perceived attachment to the dogs. …

Cave Acoustics In Prehistory: Exploring The Association Of Palaeolithic Visual Motifs And Acoustic Response, Bruno Fazenda, Scarre, Rupert Till Sep 2017

Cave Acoustics In Prehistory: Exploring The Association Of Palaeolithic Visual Motifs And Acoustic Response, Bruno Fazenda, Scarre, Rupert Till

KIP Articles

During the 1980 s, acoustic studies of Upper Palaeolithic imagery in French caves—using the technology then available—suggested a relationship between acoustic response and the location of visual motifs. This paper presents an investigation, using modern acoustic measurement techniques, into such relationships within the caves of La Garma, Las Chimeneas, La Pasiega, El Castillo, and Tito Bustillo in Northern Spain. It addresses methodological issues concerning acoustic measurement at enclosed archaeological sites and outlines a general framework for extraction of acoustic features that may be used to support archaeological hypotheses. The analysis explores possible associations between the position of visual motifs (which …

The Challenge: Innovation for Refugees and Displaced Populations

One of the great challenges of our time is how to help refugees and displaced populations, and how to prevent the causes in the first place. Every minute, 24 people around the world are forced to flee their homes. That’s 34,000 people a day who leave everything behind in the hope of finding safety and a better tomorrow. The impact of war, political, racial and religious …

Blackfish Lessons On Environmental Sustainability, Food, And Indigenous Culture, Thomas Swensen Sep 2017

Blackfish Lessons On Environmental Sustainability, Food, And Indigenous Culture, Thomas Swensen

Wellness & Healing: Indigenous Innovations & Alaska Native Research

This essay, “Blackfish Lessons on Environmental Sustainability, Food, and Indigenous Culture,” examines Yup’ik interventions into understanding the place of human-nonhuman animal relations in regard to ecological sustainability. In lending consideration to Indigenous culture, the first part of the essay explicates the Yup’ik way of living, the Yuuyaraq, and its relationship to the environment. Then the essay turns toward two Yup’ik stories about blackfish, John Active’s “Why Subsistence is a Matter of Cultural Survival: A Yup’ik Point of View” (2001) and Emily Johnson’s “Blackfish,” taken from The Thank-You Bar recorded performance (Johnson, 2009), that speak to the imbrications of Indigenous culture …

No-Pesticide, Conventional, And Nitrogen Management Strategies For Lawns And Athletic Fields In Southern New England, Julie Campbell Sep 2017

No-Pesticide, Conventional, And Nitrogen Management Strategies For Lawns And Athletic Fields In Southern New England, Julie Campbell

Doctoral Dissertations

Pesticide and fertilizer usage throughout the United States is coming under increased scrutiny from both the public and scientific communities due to potential negative environmental impacts and perceived health concerns. The three studies presented here focus on evaluating different management plans for home lawns and athletic fields, while also providing improved dissemination of information to athletic field managers. Results of the athletic field and home lawn management plan study indicate that pesticide treatments outperformed non-pesticide treatments across most measures. However, if a non-pesticide plan is desired then the high input organic or high input pesticide-free plan would be preferred over …

Wellness & Healing: Indigenous Innovations & Alaska Native Research

This article summarizes a roundtable discussion from the 2016 Alaska Native Studies Conference among professors and students from two English Studies courses at the University of Alaska Anchorage: History of the English Language and History of Rhetoric. Jennifer and Heather discuss how the courses are traditionally taught and how they redesigned the courses to incorporate place-based and indigenous pedagogies. Then, Tayler, Samantha, Hailey, and Arlo--students from a range of backgrounds who took one or both of the classes--describe how the courses encouraged them to develop critical perspectives, build new knowledge through undergraduate research, and experience personal and professional transformations that …

Influence Of The Presidential Inaugural Address On Audience Perceptions Of Candidate Image And The State Of The Nation, Kyle Alexander Rush Sep 2017

Influence Of The Presidential Inaugural Address On Audience Perceptions Of Candidate Image And The State Of The Nation, Kyle Alexander Rush

Dissertations and Theses

This study asks whether and how the presidential inaugural address influences American audiences. The current study explores how the 2017 Presidential Inaugural Address of Donald Trump influences audiences. Two areas were studied: Candidate image and the state of the nation. I hypothesized that participants who watched the address would have different attitudes regarding candidate image and the state of the nation compared to non-viewers. I also hypothesized that viewers of the address who voted for Donald Trump would respond differently to candidate image and the state of the nation when compared with those who did not vote for Trump.

Fibroblast-Specific Tgf-Β–Smad2/3 Signaling Underlies Cardiac Fibrosis, Hadi Khalil, Onur Kanisicak, Vikram Prasad, Robert N. Correll, Xing Fu, Tobias Schips, Ronald J. Vagnozzi, Ruijie Liu, Thanh Huynh, Se-Jin Lee, Jason Karch, Jeffery D. Molkentin Sep 2017

Fibroblast-Specific Tgf-Β–Smad2/3 Signaling Underlies Cardiac Fibrosis, Hadi Khalil, Onur Kanisicak, Vikram Prasad, Robert N. Correll, Xing Fu, Tobias Schips, Ronald J. Vagnozzi, Ruijie Liu, Thanh Huynh, Se-Jin Lee, Jason Karch, Jeffery D. Molkentin

Peer Reviewed Articles

The master cytokine TGF-β mediates tissue fibrosis associated with inflammation and tissue injury. TGF-β induces fibroblast activation and differentiation into myofibroblasts that secrete extracellular matrix proteins. Canonical TGF-β signaling mobilizes Smad2 and Smad3 transcription factors that control fibrosis by promoting gene expression. However, the importance of TGF-β–Smad2/3 signaling in fibroblast-mediated cardiac fibrosis has not been directly evaluated in vivo. Here, we examined pressure overload–induced cardiac fibrosis in fibroblast- and myofibroblast-specific inducible Cre-expressing mouse lines with selective deletion of the TGF-β receptors Tgfbr1/2, Smad2, or Smad3. Fibroblast-specific deletion of Tgfbr1/2 or Smad3, but not Smad2, markedly …

Transcriptome Sequencing And Delimitation Of Sympatric Oscarella Species (O. Carmela And O. Pearsei Sp. Nov) From California, Usa, Alexander V. Ereskovsky, Daniel J. Richter, Dennis V. Lavrov, Klaske J. Schippers, Scott A. Nichols

Biological Sciences: Faculty Scholarship

The homoscleromorph sponge Oscarella carmela, first described from central California, USA is shown to represent two superficially similar but both morphologically and phylogenetically distinct species that are co-distributed. We here describe a new species as Oscarella pearsei, sp. nov. and re-describe Oscarella carmela; the original description was based upon material from both species. Further, we correct the identification of published genomic/transcriptomic resources that were originally attributed to O. carmela, and present new Illumina-sequenced transcriptome assemblies for each of these species, and the mitochondrial genome sequence for O. pearsei sp. nov. Using SSU and LSU …

The Clash Of The Trinities: A New Theoretical Analysis Of The General Nature Of War, Daniel Maurer Major Sep 2017

The Clash Of The Trinities: A New Theoretical Analysis Of The General Nature Of War, Daniel Maurer Major

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

This monograph reimagines war’s fundamental nature, extending Clausewitz’s theory of its political origin and “Trinitarian” elements in a way that embraces alternative, sociological explanations like that of John Keegan. Ultimately, it proposes a new way to visualize the complexities of war’s intrinsic elements, operating at any scale, and expresses war with a completely new and universal definition.

Vincent De Paul And The Galleys Of France, John E. Rybolt C.M., Ph.D. Sep 2017

Vincent De Paul And The Galleys Of France, John E. Rybolt C.M., Ph.D.

Vincentian Studies

For decades, Vincent de Paul was the Royal Chaplain of the Galleys and sought to improve the living and working conditions of criminals condemned to galley service. He provided better housing for those awaiting their service, and both the Daughters of Charity and the Vincentians ministered to rowers’ physical and spiritual needs. Vincentians also managed a large hospital for convicts. The galleys’ function, the brutal journey to them, and the convicts’ life at sea and ashore are described. The possibility of Vincent having once substituted for a convict is discussed, as is Vincent’s view of the galley service system.

Slavery On The Frontier: The Report Of A French Missionary On Mid-Seventeenth-Century Tunis, Alison Forrestal Ph.D., Felicia Roșu Ph.D.

Vincentian Studies

This document is a report sent in 1654 by Jean Le Vacher, member of the Congregation of the Mission, vicar apostolic of the Holy See and acting French consul in Tunis, to the cardinals of the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith, in Rome. It describes his missionary work in and around Tunis. Le Vacher’s letter focuses on the life and conditions of the Christian slaves (mostly Catholic, but Protestant too) in the region and on his efforts to provide spiritual and material assistance to them. It offers insights into early modern slavery in North Africa, the efforts of …

The Golden Age Of Phenomenology At The New School For Social Research, 1954–1973, Lester Embree, Michael D. Barber

Ohio University Press Open Access Books

This collection focuses on the introduction of phenomenology to the United States by the community of scholars who taught and studied at the New School for Social Research from 1954 through 1973. During those years, Dorion Cairns, Alfred Schutz, and Aron Gurwitsch—all former students of Edmund Husserl—came together in the department of philosophy to establish the first locus of phenomenology scholarship in the country. This founding trio was soon joined by three other prominent scholars in the field: Werner Marx, Thomas M. Seebohm, and J. N. Mohanty. The Husserlian phenomenology that they brought to the New School has subsequently spread …

Development Of Markers For Embryonic Reproductive Competence In Assisted Reproduction, Xin Tao Sep 2017

Development Of Markers For Embryonic Reproductive Competence In Assisted Reproduction, Xin Tao

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

In humans, early embryo development is a complex process that consists of sequential events: oocyte maturation, fertilization, embryonic growth and implantation. Disruption of these highly regulated processes results in reproductive failure and infertility. This study characterizes and describes embryonic aneuploidy, mitochondrial content level and endometrial microbial environment related to reproductive competence, in particular instances in which failure results.

To examine the molecular underpinnings of mammalian gamete and early embryo chromosome segregation, we established a comprehensive chromosomal screening (CCS) method for mice poly bodies, oocytes and embryos by the application of whole genome amplification (WGA) and next generation sequencing (NGS). First, …
