Leonard Baskin: Imaginary Artists, Kathya M. Lopez, Erica M. Schaumberg

Schmucker Art Catalogs

Leonard Baskin (1922-2000) was an American sculptor, illustrator, and printmaker. He is perhaps best known as a figurative sculptor and a creator of monumental woodcuts. The Gehenna Press, Baskin’s private press, operated for over 50 years (1942-2000) and produced more than 100 volumes of fine art books. His most prominent public commissions include sculpture for the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial and the Woodrow Wilson Memorial, both in Washington D.C., and the Holocaust Memorial in Ann Arbor, MI. Baskin received numerous honors, among them a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Gold Medal of the National Academy of Arts and Letters, and the Jewish …

Investigation Of Seed And Seedling Predation And Natural History Of Bushveld Savanna Rodents, Christopher Banotai Oct 2017

Investigation Of Seed And Seedling Predation And Natural History Of Bushveld Savanna Rodents, Christopher Banotai

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

There is currently a decline in large, old trees within many ecosystems where they play important ecological and economic roles. One ecosystem suffering from this decline is the bushveld savanna of South Africa. One particularly important species in decline is the ecologically, economically, and culturally significant marula tree (Sclerocarya birrea subsp. caffra). This species’ decline is characterized by a steep drop in recruitment of seedlings into the population. Rodents are known to influence plant communities across many ecosystems through herbivory of adult plants as well as predation of seeds and seedlings. This research provides a record of rodent species present …

Sequence Extension Of The Tryptophan And Shikimate Operons In Clostridium Scatologenes Atcc 25775, Shawn Johnston Smiley Oct 2017

Sequence Extension Of The Tryptophan And Shikimate Operons In Clostridium Scatologenes Atcc 25775, Shawn Johnston Smiley

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

3-Methylindole and 4-methylphenol are cytotoxic and malodorant compounds derived from tryptophan and tyrosine, respectively. Each is present in swine waste lagoons and contributes to malodorous emissions from agricultural facilities. Clostridium scatologenes ATCC 25775 produces both compounds and serves as a model organism to study their metabolism and function. Through the repeated assembly and annotation of the Clostridium scatologenes genome, we propose a novel pathway for tryptophan degradation and 3-methylindole production by this organism. The genome of Clostridium scatologenes was sequenced, and re-assembled into contigs. Key elements of the tryptophan and shikimate pathways were identified. Contigs containing these elements were extracted …

Prisoner Of Context: The Truman Doctrine Speech And J. Edgar Hoover’S Rhetorical Realism, Stephen Underhill Oct 2017

Prisoner Of Context: The Truman Doctrine Speech And J. Edgar Hoover’S Rhetorical Realism, Stephen Underhill

Communications Faculty Research

In this project, I argue that J. Edgar Hoover’s style of political realism should be studied by critics because it long preceded that of President Harry S. Truman. Thestyle belonged to a stockpile of anti-Communist imagery that helped to shape how the Truman Doctrine speech was drafted and how audiences interpreted its meanings in more local domestic politics. When Truman fınally announced that the Soviet Union had challenged international protocol, I argue that he confırmed the vision that his Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) director and other detractors had developed throughout the New Deal to discredit reformers who challenged issues …

The Uncertain Foundation Of Work Product, Michael A. Blasie Oct 2017

The Uncertain Foundation Of Work Product, Michael A. Blasie

Faculty Scholarly Works

Work product is heavily litigated, extensively studied, and sorely misunderstood. Most blissfully accept it as a combination of codified rules and the seminal case of Hickman v. Taylor. This view settles for a superficial understanding that neither recognizes nor questions underlining assumptions. The codified rules are legislative mandates, Hickman is Supreme Court common law, and they define the doctrine differently. To understand its proper scope of work product, we must know the basis of Hickman v. Taylor, whether it can coexist with codified rules, and what happens when they conflict. This Article takes the novel view that work product is …

Galloway-Mowat syndrome (GAMOS) is an autosomal-recessive disease characterized by the combination of early-onset nephrotic syndrome (SRNS) and microcephaly with brain anomalies. Here we identified recessive mutations in OSGEP, TP53RK, TPRKB, and LAGE3, genes encoding the four subunits of the KEOPS complex, in 37 individuals from 32 families with GAMOS. CRISPR-Cas9 knockout in zebrafish and mice recapitulated the human phenotype of primary microcephaly and resulted in early lethality. Knockdown of OSGEP, TP53RK, or TPRKB inhibited cell proliferation, which human mutations did not rescue. Furthermore, knockdown of these genes impaired protein translation, caused endoplasmic reticulum stress, activated DNA-damage-response signaling, and ultimately induced …

Spatiotemporal Subspace Feature Tracking By Mining Discriminatory Characteristics, Richard D. Appiah Oct 2017

Spatiotemporal Subspace Feature Tracking By Mining Discriminatory Characteristics, Richard D. Appiah

Doctoral Dissertations

Recent advancements in data collection technologies have made it possible to collect heterogeneous data at complex levels of abstraction, and at an alarming pace and volume. Data mining, and most recently data science seek to discover hidden patterns and insights from these data by employing a variety of knowledge discovery techniques. At the core of these techniques is the selection and use of features, variables or properties upon which the data were acquired to facilitate effective data modeling. Selecting relevant features in data modeling is critical to ensure an overall model accuracy and optimal predictive performance of future effects. The …

Respiratory Protection Program Policies And Procedures Oct 2017

Respiratory Protection Program Policies And Procedures

Environmental Health & Safety Policies

It is the policy of the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy in St. Louis to provide its employees with a safe and healthful work environment. The guidelines in the respiratory protection program are designed to help reduce employee exposure against occupational dusts, fumes, mists, biological, radionuclides, gases and vapors. The primary objective is to prevent excessive exposure to these contaminants. This is accomplished as far as feasible by accepted engineering and work practice control measures. When effective engineering controls are not feasible, or while they are being implemented or evaluated, respiratory protection may be required to achieve this goal. …

Interfaces Of Strategic Leaders: A Conceptual Framework, Review, And Research Agenda, Zeki Simsek, Ciaran Heavey, Brian Curtis Fox

Publications

Interfaces are of growing importance for theorizing and testing the influence of strategic leaders on firm behavior and actions. But despite their relevance and ubiquity, the lack of a commonly accepted definition and unifying framework has hindered researchers’ ability to take stock, synthesize, and systematize extant knowledge. We first develop an encompassing definition and organizing framework to review 122 prior studies across three decades. We then chart promising directions for future research around three concepts central to the framework and review: (1) Why do interfaces occur? (2) What happens at these interfaces? and (3) What are the impacts of interfaces? …

Phylogenetic Evidence From Freshwater Crayfishes That Cave Adaptation Is Not An Evolutionary Dead-End., David B Stern, Jesse Breinholt, Carlos Pedraza-Lara, Marilú López-Mejía, Christopher L Owen, Heather Bracken-Grissom, James W Fetzner, Keith A Crandall

Computational Biology Institute

Caves are perceived as isolated, extreme habitats with a uniquely specialized biota, which long ago led to the idea that caves are "evolutionary dead-ends." This implies that cave-adapted taxa may be doomed for extinction before they can diversify or transition to a more stable state. However, this hypothesis has not been explicitly tested in a phylogenetic framework with multiple independently evolved cave-dwelling groups. Here, we use the freshwater crayfish, a group with dozens of cave-dwelling species in multiple lineages, as a system to test this hypothesis. We consider historical patterns of lineage diversification and habitat transition as well as current …

Circulating Early- And Mid-Pregnancy Micrornas And Risk Of Gestational Diabetes., Pandora L Wander, Edward J Boyko, Karin Hevner, Viraj J Parikh, Mahlet G Tadesse, Tanya K Sorensen, Michelle A Williams, Daniel A Enquobahrie

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

AIMS: Epigenetic regulators, including microRNAs (miRNAs), are implicated in type 2 diabetes, but evidence linking circulating miRNAs in pregnancy and risk of gestational diabetes (GDM) is sparse. Potential modifiers, including pre-pregnancy overweight/obesity and offspring sex, are unexamined. We hypothesized that circulating levels of early-mid-pregnancy (range 7-23weeks of gestation) candidate miRNAs are related to subsequent development of GDM. We also hypothesized that miRNA-GDM associations might vary by pre-pregnancy body-mass index (ppBMI) or offspring sex.

METHODS: In a case-control analysis (36GDM cases/80 controls) from the Omega study, a prospective cohort study of pregnancy complications, we measured early-mid-pregnancy plasma levels of 10miRNAs chosen …

Dignity, Inequality, And Stereotypes, Luke A. Boso Oct 2017

Dignity, Inequality, And Stereotypes, Luke A. Boso

Washington Law Review

In Obergefell v. Hodges, the Supreme Court held that same-sex marriage bans violate the Equal Protection Clause for two primary reasons. First, they subordinate; they send the message that lesbians and gays are inferior to heterosexuals. Second, they unequally deny lesbian and gay individuals the liberty to make fundamental decisions about identity and self. These two conjoined themes—anti-group subordination and pro-individual liberty—comprise the two pillars of “equal dignity” that anchor Obergefell’s holding. This Article proposes that these pillars also support the Court’s anti-stereotyping jurisprudence, and equal dignity is thus one important aspect of what the Equal Protection Clause …

Housing Availability, Accessibility And Affordability For Nebraska's Rural Aging Populations, Jordan G. Grummert Rasmussen Oct 2017

Housing Availability, Accessibility And Affordability For Nebraska's Rural Aging Populations, Jordan G. Grummert Rasmussen

Community and Regional Planning Program: Theses

Rural America and the nation as a whole has entered a phase of significant demographic change, as the number of Americans over the age of 65 is estimated to double by 2050. Nebraska counties and the state are, too, experiencing this shift in the age demographic. As the population ages, consideration must be given to the housing options for older adults, specifically those who reside and wish to remain in rural areas.

While broad consideration is given to either population aging or housing in rural areas, there is limited county level analysis adjoining these demographic and housing realities. This study …

Benefits Of Public R&D In U.S. Agriculture: Spill-Ins, Extension And Roads, S L. Wang, A Plastina, Lilyan E. Fulginiti, E. Ball

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

This paper uses panel data for the 1980-2004 period to estimate the contributions

of public research to US agricultural productivity growth. Local and social

internal rates of return are estimated accounting for the effects of R & D

spill-in, extension activities and road density. R & D spill-in proxies were constructed

based on both geographic proximity and production profile to examine

the sensitivity of the rates of return to these alternatives. We find that

extension activities, road density, and R & D spill-ins, play an important role

in enhancing the benefit of public R & D investments. We also find …
