Estrogens As Neuroprotectants: Estrogenic Actions In The Context Of Cognitive Aging And Brain Injury, E. B. Engler-Chiurazzi, C. M. Brown, J. M. Povroznik, J. W. Simpkins Oct 2017

Estrogens As Neuroprotectants: Estrogenic Actions In The Context Of Cognitive Aging And Brain Injury, E. B. Engler-Chiurazzi, C. M. Brown, J. M. Povroznik, J. W. Simpkins

Clinical and Translational Science Institute

There is ample empirical evidence to support the notion that the biological impacts of estrogen extend beyond the gonads to other bodily systems, including the brain and behavior. Converging preclinical findings have indicated a neuroprotective role for estrogen in a variety of experimental models of cognitive function and brain insult. However, the surprising null or even detrimental findings of several large clinical trials evaluating the ability of estrogen-containing hormone treatments to protect against age-related brain changes and insults, including cognitive aging and brain injury, led to hesitation by both clinicians and patients in the use of exogenous estrogenic treatments for …

Auditory Object Perception: A Neurobiological Model And Prospective Review, Julie A. Brefczynski-Lewis, James W. Lewis Oct 2017

Auditory Object Perception: A Neurobiological Model And Prospective Review, Julie A. Brefczynski-Lewis, James W. Lewis

Clinical and Translational Science Institute

Interaction with the world is a multisensory experience, but most of what is known about the neural correlates of perception comes from studying vision. Auditory inputs enter cortex with its own set of unique qualities, and leads to use in oral communication, speech, music, and the understanding of emotional and intentional states of others, all of which are central to the human experience. To better understand how the auditory system develops, recovers after injury, and how it may have transitioned in its functions over the course of hominin evolution, advances are needed in models of how the human brain is …

Trends In Brain Cancer Mortality Among U.S. Gulf War Veterans: 21 Year Follow-Up., Shannon K. Barth, Erin K. Dursa, Robert M. Bossarte, Aaron I. Schneiderman Oct 2017

Trends In Brain Cancer Mortality Among U.S. Gulf War Veterans: 21 Year Follow-Up., Shannon K. Barth, Erin K. Dursa, Robert M. Bossarte, Aaron I. Schneiderman

Clinical and Translational Science Institute

Objective—Previous mortality studies of U.S. Gulf War veterans through 2000 and 2004 have shown an increased risk of brain cancer mortality among some deployed individuals. When veterans possibly exposed to environmental contaminants associated with demolition of the Khamisiyah Ammunition Storage Facility at Khamisiyah, Iraq, have been compared to contemporaneously deployed unexposed veterans, the results have suggested increased risk for mortality from brain cancer among the exposed. Brain cancer mortality risk in this cohort has not been updated since 2004. Methods—This study analyzes the risk for brain cancer mortality between 1991–2011 through two series of comparisons: U.S. Gulf War deployed and …

Oldowan Stone Tools And Hominin Cognition, Brittney Highland Oct 2017

Oldowan Stone Tools And Hominin Cognition, Brittney Highland

Anthropology Undergraduate Senior Theses

The manufacturing of Oldowan stone tools marks a significant first step in human technological adaptation as part of the larger story of human evolution. Stone tools allow manipulation of the environment in a manner not capable by human ancestors’ “tooth and claw,” or biology, and just as importantly stone tool manufacture and use changes selective pressures related to cognition and learning. These cognitive/technological abilities drove the members of the genus Homo to become one of the most flexibly adaptive creatures on the planet. Examination of the evolution of human cognition and pedagogy allows for a more complete understanding of the …

Bringing About Fullness Of Life With Care And Compassion: Learnings From The Social Enterprise Of The Good Shepherd Sisters, Julius B. Lunar Oct 2017

Bringing About Fullness Of Life With Care And Compassion: Learnings From The Social Enterprise Of The Good Shepherd Sisters, Julius B. Lunar

Center for Business Research and Development

One of the principles of the Church’s social teachings is integral human development. In his encyclical, Populorum Progressio, Pope Paul VI stated that “authentic human development is the development of the whole human being and of all human beings.” The importance of individuals as human beings is also rooted in the conviction of St. Mary Euphrasia Pelletier, foundress of the Good Shepherd Sisters, who kept reminding her daughters that “a person is of more value than the whole world.”

The Integral Human Development Approach guides the business model of the Mountain Maid Training Center (MMTC) in Baguio, which is a …

Communitarianism And The Roberts Court, Robert M. Ackerman Oct 2017

Communitarianism And The Roberts Court, Robert M. Ackerman

Florida State University Law Review

In this Article, Professor Ackerman examines the work of the Roberts Court through a communitarian lens. Communitarians strive for a reasonable balance between individual rights and the collective good. They believe that even in a rights-conscious society, rights have limits, and involve responsibilities. And so, communitarians will often consider whether the Supreme Court has struck a proper balance between individual liberty and the public interest.

But communitarian theory has other, multidimensional aspects. Communitarians view people as social animals, who are not mere autonomous agents with nobody to care about but themselves. They therefore see the value not only of large-scale …

Keeping Our Cool: In Defense Of Air Conditioning, Arthur M. Diamond Jr. Oct 2017

Keeping Our Cool: In Defense Of Air Conditioning, Arthur M. Diamond Jr.

Economics Faculty Publications

In the last 15 years three books have been published that are critical of air conditioning (Cooper 1998; Ackermann 2002; Cox 2010). No books (or even articles) in those years have been primarily devoted to a general defense. Such a defense should make the following points. Air conditioners reduce disease and mortality, especially among the ill and aged. They reduce aggressive behavior, including road rage, assaults, and murders. They increase the quality and quantity of nighttime sleep. They improve student and worker productivity by reducing noise and increasing the ability to concentrate. They increase comfort and free choice.

Prey Availability Affects Territory Size, But Not Territorial Display Behavior, In Green Anole Lizards, Chelsea M. Stehle, Andrew C. Battles, Michelle N. Sparks, Michele A. Johnson Oct 2017

Prey Availability Affects Territory Size, But Not Territorial Display Behavior, In Green Anole Lizards, Chelsea M. Stehle, Andrew C. Battles, Michelle N. Sparks, Michele A. Johnson

Biology Faculty Research

The availability of food resources can affect the size and shape of territories, as well as the behaviors used to defend territories, in a variety of animal taxa. However, individuals within a population may respond differently to variation in food availability if the benefits of territoriality vary among those individuals. For example, benefits to territoriality may differ for animals of differing sizes, because larger individuals may require greater territory size to acquire required resources, or territorial behavior may differ between the sexes if males and females defend different resources in their territories. In this study, we tested whether arthropod abundance …
