Delayed Spinal Cord Infarction Following Anterior Cervical Surgical Decompression, Muhammad Faheem Khan, Rashid Jooma, Fauzan Alam Hashmi, Muhammad Faraz Raghib
Section of Neurosurgery
Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) for cord compression is a safe and effective procedure with good outcomes. However, worsening of myelopathy is the most feared adverse event of the surgery. We report the case of a 36-year-old male patient who presented with an acute non-traumatic C5-6 cervical disc herniation causing incomplete quadriparesis. He underwent an uncomplicated ACDF at C5-6, and after an initial period of improvement, he developed a delayed onset of an anterior cord syndrome on day 3, without any discerning cause. We have reviewed similar cases reported in the literature and believe that our patient's postsurgical course …

Cadaveric Study For Intraoral Needle Access To The Infratemporal Fossa: Application To Posterior Superior Alveolar Nerve Block Technique., Joe Iwanaga, Emily Simonds, Rod J Oskouian, R Shane Tubbs
Articles, Abstracts, and Reports
The posterior superior alveolar (PSA) nerve block is, from an anatomical perspective, challenging because the mandibular ramus and the zygomatic process of the maxilla can interfere with the course of the needle. Dentists empirically know that shifting the patient's mandible to the ipsilateral side can improve visibility and accessibility for such blocks. This cadaveric study aimed to establish anatomical evidence for the ipsilateral mandible shifting used in the PSA. The distance between the lateral most bulging point of the alveolar part of the maxilla and ipsilateral anterior border of the ramus of the mandible ranged from 1.4 to 6.9 mm …

This report describes the results of research performed with funds from the Sture Fredrik Anliot Grant Fund granted in March 2016 and the Wright State University College of Science and Mathematics. The title of the grant was “Lytle Creek and Indian Run Sediment and Water Pollution Assessment” and its primary aim was to identify and measure pollutants that could be causing a lack of biodiversity in Lytle Creek in Wilmington, OH. The project formed the basis of Amira Alsenbel’s Masters in Chemistry thesis research.

Escape Burrowing Of Modern Freshwater Bivalves As A Paradigm For Escape Behavior In The Devonian Bivalve Archanodon Catskillensis, Katja Knoll, Rebecca B. Chamberlain, John A. Chamberlain
Escape Burrowing Of Modern Freshwater Bivalves As A Paradigm For Escape Behavior In The Devonian Bivalve Archanodon Catskillensis, Katja Knoll, Rebecca B. Chamberlain, John A. Chamberlain
Publications and Research
Many freshwater bivalves restore themselves to the sediment water interface after burial by upward escape burrowing. We studied the escape burrowing capacity of two modern unionoids, Elliptio complanata and Pyganodon cataracta and the invasive freshwater venerid Corbicula fluminea, in a controlled laboratory setting varying sediment grain size and burial depth. We found that the relatively streamlined E. complanata is a better escape burrower than the more obese P. cataracta. E. complanata is more likely to escape burial in both fine and coarse sand, and at faster rates than P. cataracta. However, successful escape from 10 cm burial, especially in fine …

The complexity of processes and interactions that drive soil C dynamics necessitate the use of proxy variables to represent soil characteristics that cannot be directly measured (correlative proxies), or that aggregate information about multiple soil characteristics into one variable (integrative proxies). These proxies have proven useful for understanding the soil C cycle, which is highly variable in both space and time, and are now being used to make predictions of the fate and persistence of C under future climate scenarios. However, the C pools and processes that proxies represent must be thoughtfully considered in order to minimize uncertainties in empirical …
Effect Of Time At Temperature For Natural Fibres, Alexander Hart, John Summerscales
Effect Of Time At Temperature For Natural Fibres, Alexander Hart, John Summerscales
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
The manufacture of natural fibre reinforced polymer matrix composites is generally assumed to be limited to temperatures not exceeding 200°C. However, given the covalent bonding in the various constituents of natural fibres, they should retain properties to an extent dependent on the time at temperature. This study considers fibre mechanical properties after heating in air for various temperatures and times.

Whatever happens to the Affordable Care Act (ACA) over the next few years, it is fair to assume that state Medicaid programs will be subjected to cost control measures. Despite the recent deployment of substantial arguments to the contrary, the belief still persists that the Supreme Court’s decision in Alexander v. Choate over thirty years ago stands for the proposition that disability anti-discrimination law does not impose requirements on the structure of Medicaid benefits. This belief is misleading at best. In this article, we challenge the access/content distinction and the straitened interpretation of Alexander v. Choate that has resulted from …
Gum Arabic Promotes Oxidation And Ester Hydrolysis, Koen P. Vercruysse, Lauren E. Tyler, Jade Readus
Gum Arabic Promotes Oxidation And Ester Hydrolysis, Koen P. Vercruysse, Lauren E. Tyler, Jade Readus
Chemistry Faculty Research
We studied the interactions between gum Arabic and select catecholic compounds like caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid and catechol. We observed that GA is capable of promoting the auto-oxidation of the above-mentioned compounds into darkly colored pigments without the addition of redox-sensitive cations. Gum Arabic appeared to be unique among polysaccharide-based materials as many other types of polysaccharides promote the oxidation of the above-mentioned compounds only in the presence of redox cations like Fe2+ or Cu2+. RP-HPLC and SEC chromatographic techniques were employed to monitor the reactions and to observe the formation of high molecular mass, pigmented materials from gum Arabic …

Patricide Or Mourning The Nation-State In Francis Leclerc’S Looking For Alexander, Sophie Boyer
Patricide Or Mourning The Nation-State In Francis Leclerc’S Looking For Alexander, Sophie Boyer
CALL: Irish Journal for Culture, Arts, Literature and Language
This article examines two closely connected dimensions of Francis Leclerc’s 2004 film, Looking for Alexander: a psychoanalytical dimension and a political one. Freud’s theories on the murder of the primal violent father in his essay Totem and Taboo provide the framework for a psychoanalytical interpretation of the protagonist’s fate: Alexandre Tourneur, a veterinarian struck by amnesia, embarks on a quest for his lost identity. Facilitated by the totemic figure of the deer, the act of remembering gradually leads to a conscious awakening to the events of an abusive childhood and the crime of patricide he committed as a boy …
Kunst Fürs Volk: Genre Painting As Mass Culture In Nineteenth-Century Germany, Colleen Becker
Kunst Fürs Volk: Genre Painting As Mass Culture In Nineteenth-Century Germany, Colleen Becker
CALL: Irish Journal for Culture, Arts, Literature and Language
Kunst fürs Volk repositions genre painting in nineteenth-century Germany as a form of mass culture, rather than high art, to achieve new insight into the form and function of a rather tired pictorial format. Genre paintings were as commonplace at galleries and large-scale art exhibitions as they were in commercial art, and they were used to illustrate all manner of objects and ephemera. The reiteration of forms within genre paintings had become, in a sense, a ‘massification’ of artistic technique and expression, just as the images and figurative elements themselves were repeated endlessly within different media formats. To the extent …
Nikolai Shpanov And The Evolution Of The Soviet Spy Thriller, Duccio Colombo
Nikolai Shpanov And The Evolution Of The Soviet Spy Thriller, Duccio Colombo
CALL: Irish Journal for Culture, Arts, Literature and Language
It is a common opinion that Stalinist literature knew no explicitly popular genres, and that, consequently, its whole body can be regarded as popular culture. The case of Nikolai Shpanov is one of the most evident arguments against such an interpretation.
From the late Thirties to the early Fifties, Shpanov's works, centered around the fight with fiendish spies, had huge print runs and conspicuous success among the readers; yet, Soviet critics nearly ignored them. The publishing channels were not those of the officially endorsed "classics" of Socialist Realism, but rather what can be regarded as a Soviet equivalent of a …
When Popular Cultures Are Not So Popular: The Case Of Comics In France, Sylvain Aquatias
When Popular Cultures Are Not So Popular: The Case Of Comics In France, Sylvain Aquatias
CALL: Irish Journal for Culture, Arts, Literature and Language
Studies about comics in France have often focused on the process of cultural legitimation. This process is made complex by the composition of the French readership of comics, which consists largely of children, and by the transmedia circulation and expansion of comics, including cartoons and videogames. These factors, and the role of peers’ prescription reduce the impact of cultural legitimacy. By contrast, when adults are concerned, a correlation between education and tastes in comic art can be clearly identified, as evidenced in the preference shown by adult readers with higher instruction level for graphic novels.
Comic art is characterised by …
The Way We Read Now: Middlebrow Fiction In Twenty-First Century Europe, Diana Holmes
The Way We Read Now: Middlebrow Fiction In Twenty-First Century Europe, Diana Holmes
CALL: Irish Journal for Culture, Arts, Literature and Language
The allocation of a novel to the category ‘middlebrow’ is partly a matter of marketing and shifting attitudes to literary value, but this article argues that it also designates certain stylistic and narrative qualities that are little esteemed by ‘serious’ critics, but appeal consistently to a wider reading public. The article focuses on one sub-category of contemporary middlebrow fiction, feminine crime, through a comparative analysis of novels by Fred Vargas (French) and Kate Atkinson (British). The argument addresses the relationship between popular and middlebrow within the genre of crime writing, and the ways in which a female perspective inflects generic …
