Nigella Sativa Extract Improves Seminiferous Tubule Epithelial Thickness In Lead Acetate-Exposed Balb/C Mice, Alis Nur Diana, Reny I'Tishom, Sri Agus Sudjarwo

Folia Medica Indonesiana

Lead that enters the body may lead to increased production of ROS (Reactive Oxygen Species) that may affect reproductive system. Black cumin (Nigella sativa) extract contains high antioxidant, tymoquinone, that may be used to suppress oxidative stress induced by lead in animal experiments. This study aimed to prove that black cumin (Nigella sativa) extract improves the thickness of seminiferous tubular epithelium in Balb/c mice exposed to lead (Pb) acetate. This study used post-test only control group design. The subjects in this study were 30 Balb/c male mice (Mus musculus), divided into 5 groups. K-group: control group without lead acetate and …

The Effect Of Recombinant Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor 121 On Nitride Oxide Level In Mice (Mus Musculus) Model Of Preeclampsia, Soetrisno Soetrisno, Isharyadi Isharyadi, Sri Sulistyowati Nov 2017

The Effect Of Recombinant Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor 121 On Nitride Oxide Level In Mice (Mus Musculus) Model Of Preeclampsia, Soetrisno Soetrisno, Isharyadi Isharyadi, Sri Sulistyowati

Folia Medica Indonesiana

Preeclampsia is a multifactorial syndrome in pregnancy whose cause is still unknown. Several proangiogenic and antiangiogenic mediators such as Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) and Nitrite Oxide (NO) play important roles in preventing preeclampsia. VEGF can increase NO level that lowers maternal blood pressure, improves endothelial function and reduces placental hypoxia in preeclampsia. Recombinant VEGF 121 is expected to be an option in the prevention and treatment of preeclampsia. This experimental study used mice (Mus musculus) as the model. The objective of this study was to observe the effect of recombinant VEGF 121 in increasing the level of nitric oxide …

The goal of the present project is to build capacity here at the Institute of Archaeology in deployment of animation technologies for rendering of archaeological findings and narratives. To this end I have assembled a team of two graduate students with significant computer skills (Jared Wilson and Stanley Lebrun) and one undergraduate student (Paul Roschman) who will collaborate with me to animate, using Esri CityEngine software, the story of long-term change in the cultural landscape of …

Pl-1 The Waldensians: A Story Of Faith And Survival, Kathleen Demsky Nov 2017

Pl-1 The Waldensians: A Story Of Faith And Survival, Kathleen Demsky

Celebration of Research and Creative Scholarship

The history of the Waldenses, an ancient group of Christians who resided in the mountain valleys of Piedmont, Italy, is a complicated story of faith and survival. Piecing this history together is difficult because so many Waldensian records were destroyed by papal powers. This study seeks to present a comprehensive perspective on the origins of the Waldenses and their relationship to Christian Scripture, while viewing the Waldenses as examples for modern Christians. The Waldenses were of apostolic origin, inhabiting the Valleys long before the advent of Peter Waldo, their alleged founder, and did not consider themselves reformers. They were among …

Puddling By Female Florida Tiger Swallowtail Butterflies, Papillo Glaucus Australis (Lepidoptera: Papilionidae), J. Mark Scriber

The Great Lakes Entomologist

(excerpt)

Many species from all families of Rhopaloccra have been reported to drink water (Norris 1936). Bates (1863) noted that, in the Amazon, 80 species from 22 genera flocked about the damp edges of water and, with very few exceptions, all of these individuals were males.

Cereal Leaf Beetle (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) And Winter Wheat: Host Plant Resistance Relationships, Stanley G. Wellso Nov 2017

Cereal Leaf Beetle (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) And Winter Wheat: Host Plant Resistance Relationships, Stanley G. Wellso

The Great Lakes Entomologist

The cereal leaf beetle was introduced into North America from Europe prior to 1960. An overview of the control of the insect in North America is presented with major emphasis on host plant resistance. The length and density of the adaxial trichomes (pubescence or leaf hairs) convey resistance to wheat, and the amount of resistance can be estimated mathematically without the insect being present.

Neuronal Degeneration And Short-Term Memory Impairment After Tbi, Obiamaraije Igwe Nov 2017

Neuronal Degeneration And Short-Term Memory Impairment After Tbi, Obiamaraije Igwe

Posters-at-the-Capitol

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) was associated with impaired short-term memory with causes of vehicle accidents and falls. Protein plaques containing fibrinogen (Fg), are associated with memory loss. After TBI, Fg in blood was higher than normal (>~2 mg/ml), which resulted in increased Fg in extravascular space. Therefore, Fg bonded to its endothelial receptor intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1). Fg then interacted with cellular prion protein (PrPC), which had a strong effect on the loss of memory and cognition. Mechanisms of Fg and PrPC complex formation and its functional implication are not known. This present study tested the level of Fg-PrPC …

Microbial And Genomic Analysis Of Environmental Samples In Search Of Pathogenic Salmonella, Jorie L. Skutas Nov 2017

Microbial And Genomic Analysis Of Environmental Samples In Search Of Pathogenic Salmonella, Jorie L. Skutas

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

Salmonellosis or “food poisoning” is a foodborne infection brought on by the pathogen Salmonella from the ingestion of the bacterium on contaminated foods such as vegetables. Infection from Salmonella leads to the highest incidence of hospitalizations and deaths each year, compared to any other bacterial foodborne illness. South Florida is the second largest agricultural winter vegetable producer in the United States, and contamination of vegetables is often observed in preharvest practices. A hardy bacterium, Salmonella, has been shown to live up to 6 weeks in soil and water up to 42°C without a host.

The Florida Everglades is a tropical …

Evaluating Small-Scale Simulation For Training Firearm Safety Skills, Trevor Maxfield Nov 2017

Evaluating Small-Scale Simulation For Training Firearm Safety Skills, Trevor Maxfield

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

There is limited research using small-scale simulation in applied behavior analysis. We used small-scale simulation to train firearm safety skills to 3 to 5-years-old children and assessed whether the skills generalized to the natural environment through in situ assessment. Three participants completed the training and all participants learned the safety skills from simulation training. Two of the participants acquired the safety skills after the first simulation training and the third participant required one booster training before demonstrating the safety skills in the natural environment.

How Did I Get Here? Testing The Translation Of The Morris Water Maze And The Influence Of Hemoglobin A1c On Spatial Navigation Performance, Colleen Pappas Nov 2017

How Did I Get Here? Testing The Translation Of The Morris Water Maze And The Influence Of Hemoglobin A1c On Spatial Navigation Performance, Colleen Pappas

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Changes in cognitive status occur with aging and significant attention has been placed on developing interventions to possibly delay cognitive decline and identifying risk factors that exacerbate cognitive deficits. One issue that arises when studying interventions is that they do not always effectively translate from animal models to human subjects. When testing potentially modifiable risk factors related to cognitive impairment, more sensitive metrics could help in identifying targets for intervention at earlier time-points. Therefore, the aims of the current dissertation were twofold. The first study examined the ability to translate between species using a common behavioral paradigm, the Morris water …

Not So Bad: Avoidance And Aversive Discounting Modulate Threat Appraisal In Anterior Cingulate And Medial Prefrontal Cortex, Michael W. Schlund, Adam T. Brewer, David M. Richman, Sandy K. Magee, Simon Dymond Nov 2017

Not So Bad: Avoidance And Aversive Discounting Modulate Threat Appraisal In Anterior Cingulate And Medial Prefrontal Cortex, Michael W. Schlund, Adam T. Brewer, David M. Richman, Sandy K. Magee, Simon Dymond

Psychology Faculty Publications

The dorsal anterior cingulate (adACC) and dorsal medial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC) play a central role in the discrimination and appraisal of threatening stimuli. Yet, little is known about what specific features of threatening situations recruit these regions and how avoidance may modulate appraisal and activation through prevention of aversive events. In this investigation, 30 healthy adults underwent functional neuroimaging while completing an avoidance task in which responses to an Avoidable CS+ threat prevented delivery of an aversive stimulus, but not to an Unavoidable CS+ threat. Extinction testing was also completed where CSs were presented without aversive stimulus delivery and an …

Evaluation Of Winter Management Methods To Enhance Survival Of The Giant Salvinia Weevil, Cyrtobagous Salviniae, Lori Robyn Moshman Nov 2017

Evaluation Of Winter Management Methods To Enhance Survival Of The Giant Salvinia Weevil, Cyrtobagous Salviniae, Lori Robyn Moshman

LSU Master's Theses

Giant salvinia (Salvinia molesta Mitchell) is a noxious aquatic weed in the southeastern United States. Dense plant mats create ecological and economic consequences by displacing native species and impacting freshwater industries. Biological control programs using the salvinia weevil (Cyrtobagous salviniae Calder and Sands, Coleoptera: Curculionidae) have limited efficacy in giant salvinia’s northernmost range due to the weevil’s low cold tolerance and long-term establishment rates. Spunbonded polypropylene (SBP) fabrics and manipulation of plant density were evaluated as two strategies for managing giant salvinia mats during winter. Greenhouse, laboratory, and field experiments were conducted to determine the suitability of these …

Human-Environment Interactions: Sea-Level Rise And Marine Resource Use At Eleanor Betty, An Underwater Maya Salt Work, Belize, Valerie Renae Feathers Nov 2017

Human-Environment Interactions: Sea-Level Rise And Marine Resource Use At Eleanor Betty, An Underwater Maya Salt Work, Belize, Valerie Renae Feathers

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Dissertation excavations were performed in the spring of 2013 at the underwater site of Eleanor Betty in Paynes Creek National Park, Belize. The marine environment preserved wooden architecture associated with the salt works. Excavation goals included: 1) excavating and defining the boundaries of the submerged shell midden; 2) collecting sediment samples for paleoenvironmental analyses; and 3) recovering cultural remains to determine the site’s purpose (residence versus production workshop).

Four transects were added to the existing transect from excavations performed during the 2011 field season. The shell midden measured 5 meters in length (north-to-south throughout all transects) by 0.5-to-1 meters in …
