Discretion Bites: The Current State Of Animal Emergency Planning, Paige Chretien Jan 2017

Discretion Bites: The Current State Of Animal Emergency Planning, Paige Chretien

San Diego Journal of Climate & Energy Law

Natural disasters have historically wreaked havoc on the lives of animals. Hurricane Katrina, which hit the gulf coast of Louisiana in 2005, exposed the tragic vulnerabilities of pets and pet owners in disasters and brought awareness to the significance of the human-animal bond.[1] As climate change will likely breed storms that are more deadly than their predecessors, planning and preparedness are essential to mitigating the impacts of these storms. The current status of animal emergency planning and preparedness in the state of California does not ensure that such vulnerable population will be adequately protected.
Part I begins by discussing the …

Journal of Public Affairs and Development

Rainfed lowland and upland farmers have less access to new technologies especially those that would reduce their vulnerability to climate change. In the Philippines, the Philippine Rice Research Institute developed a package of technology called “Palayamanan” that is suited to rainfed sites. This paper presents the results of the study that disseminated the Palayamanan technology through the climate field school (CFS) in rainfed areas in Bicol. Thirty-eight farmers from two barangays of Pamplona, Camarines Sur, and 78 farmers from three barangays of Milagros, Masbate were the respondents. A five-point scale was used to self-assess farmers’ knowledge on topics discussed in …

The Prosecution Of Pirates And The Enforcement Of Counter-Piracy Laws Are Virtually Incapacitated By Law Itself, Waseem Ahmad Qureshi Jan 2017

The Prosecution Of Pirates And The Enforcement Of Counter-Piracy Laws Are Virtually Incapacitated By Law Itself, Waseem Ahmad Qureshi

San Diego International Law Journal

The legal framework to fight and suppress piracy is embodied largely in the United Nations Convention on the Law of Sea (“UNCLOS”), 1982, which is supplemented by United Nations Security Council Resolutions, and international conventions and treaties. This Article aims to critique the existing legal framework against piracy and challenge its efficacy in successfully curbing and eradicating piracy around the world throughout history. Unlike the extensive literature on legal studies of piracy, this Article recognizes piracy as a global menace, rather than observing it through the lens of regional differences. Consequently, this Article seeks to identify creeks and holes within …

Physician-Assisted Suicide: Removing Residency Requirements In The U.S. To Comport With An International Right To Health, Alexi Silverman Jan 2017

Physician-Assisted Suicide: Removing Residency Requirements In The U.S. To Comport With An International Right To Health, Alexi Silverman

San Diego International Law Journal

In 1948, the UN General Assembly passed a resolution, known as the International Bill of Human Rights. The Bill contains the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, articulating a human right to health. A subsequent treaty, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights states that “every human being has the inherent right to life.” Furthermore, the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights protects access to healthcare. However, these treaties do not explicitly recognize a “right to die,” leaving the decision of whether to allow euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide within the discretion of individual countries.

With this international background …

Exploring factors impacting veterans’ hypertension (HTN) control is essential in reducing the common cardiovascular disease event of stroke, heart attack, chronic kidney disease and mortality. The purpose of this study was to describe multidimensional factors impacting veterans’ HTN control. Utilizing a descriptive, exploratory, cross-sectional, retrospective, convenience sampling research design, 331 electronic medical records in a VA dashboard data set were reviewed for men and women veterans between the age 24 and 98 years (M=62, SD=13) in a Southern California Veterans Affair primary care clinic from October 17, 2014 through October 17, 2016. Data were analyzed by univariate, bivariate and multivariate …

Skeletal Muscle Arteriole Dysfunction And Microvessel Density In Metabolic Syndrome And Depression: How Exercise Can Be Used As An Intervention, Kayla Whitney Branyan Jan 2017

Skeletal Muscle Arteriole Dysfunction And Microvessel Density In Metabolic Syndrome And Depression: How Exercise Can Be Used As An Intervention, Kayla Whitney Branyan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The present study examined the effect of unpredictable chronic mild stress (UCMS) on peripheral microvessel function in healthy and metabolic syndrome (MetS) rodents, and whether exercise training could prevent the vascular dysfunction associated with UCMS. Our initial hypothesis was that: 1) LZRs exposed to UCMS would have peripheral microvascular dysfunction similar to that evident in the OZRs controls due to a reduction in NO bioavailability and an increase in ROS production; 2) the comorbidity between MetS exposed to UCMS will exacerbate the already existing peripheral microvascular dysfunction; 3) exercise could limit the peripheral microvascular dysfunction by decreasing oxidative stress and …

Whole-Farm Phosphorus Management In West Virginia Beef Cattle Operations, Justin Brackenrich Jan 2017

Whole-Farm Phosphorus Management In West Virginia Beef Cattle Operations, Justin Brackenrich

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Demand for animal proteins is increasing worldwide, spurring an increase in forage based agricultural production. Forage based agriculture utilizes grass and legume crops from areas which are not suited for row-crop production to feed ruminant animals. These systems provide increased animal proteins to consumer markets, while using minimal amounts of cereal crops that would otherwise be used for human consumption. However, forage based agriculture does not come without a risk of environmental degradation. The US EPA determined that agriculture non-point source (NPS) pollution is among the top three causes of phosphorus (P) related surface water impairment and accounts for an …

Baltimore City Reservoir Watershed Forests Deer Exclosure Study: Deer Impact In An Even-Aged, Second Growth, Hardwood Forest Over A Ten Year Period, Walter Buck

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) have the potential to change forest community dynamics by affecting the persistence of individual tree species and altering overstory composition. We evaluated the Baltimore City Reservoir Watershed Forests Deer Exclosure Study for a better understanding of the effects of over-browsing in this hardwood forest. The study examined the effects of deer browsing over a ten year period, using 20 fenced deer exclosure plots (8x8 feet), paired with unfenced reference control plots. Tree seedling and sapling abundance was compared between the fenced deer exclosure plots and the unfenced control plots over the ten year period. Total tree …

Geography

The PREDICTS project—Projecting Responses of Ecological Diversity In Changing Terrestrial Systems (www.predicts.org.uk)—has collated from published studies a large, reasonably representative database of comparable samples of biodiversity from multiple sites that differ in the nature or intensity of human impacts relating to land use. We have used this evidence base to develop global and regional statistical models of how local biodiversity responds to these measures. We describe and make freely available this 2016 release of the database, containing more than 3.2 million records sampled at over 26,000 locations and representing over 47,000 species. We outline how the database can help in …

Diversity And Function Of Fungi Associated With The Fungivorous Millipede, Brachycybe Lecontii, Angie M. Macias Jan 2017

Diversity And Function Of Fungi Associated With The Fungivorous Millipede, Brachycybe Lecontii, Angie M. Macias

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Brachycybe (Wood) is a genus of fungivorous millipedes. To date, the fungal associates of these millipedes have never been characterized. In an attempt to resolve these relationships, culture-based approaches combined with DNA barcode sequencing were used. Sampling of 313 individuals collected from three of four B. lecontii clades and 20 sites across seven states uncovered at least 183 genera in 40 orders from four fungal phyla. At least seven putative new species were recovered in this study, despite the use of more classical culture-based approaches. Three of these fungi were phylogenetically resolved using ITS + LSU and include two new …

Storytelling, Survival, And Child Figures In Contemporary American Life-Writing, Yvonne Michelle Swartz Hammond Jan 2017

Storytelling, Survival, And Child Figures In Contemporary American Life-Writing, Yvonne Michelle Swartz Hammond

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

My dissertation explores strategies for survival primarily related to acts of storytelling, and more specifically storytelling with the tacit agreement for measures of truth, what I refer to in my title as life-writing. The term "life-writing" refers broadly to literary and theatrical works that are connected to the lived-experience. The texts I examine, all written in the U.S. after 1990, consider the impact of traumatic and unjust pasts through sweeping, epic narratives. Each of these texts tells a separate story about injustice through stories that reveal children as victims of discursive and/or actual violence arising out of conflict between and …

Identification Of Snps Potentially Associated With Asthma Using A Di-Isocyanate Luciferase Reporter Assay, Wentao Jiang Jan 2017

Identification Of Snps Potentially Associated With Asthma Using A Di-Isocyanate Luciferase Reporter Assay, Wentao Jiang

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Occupational Asthma (OA) is a common lung disorder that can be caused or aggravated by exposures and conditions in the work places. Di-isocyanate asthma (DA) is one type of OA. Despite years of research, there are no reliable markers to predict risk or susceptibility for DA. Previous studies have identified 23 candidate single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that are potentially associated with genes that are related with DA. In this study, we tested the functional relevance of the 23 candidate SNPs (mostly intronic) in several DA-related genes. We hypothesized that some of these SNPs may affect the binding of relevant transcription …

Study Of Parameter Estimation And Model Calibration Using Bayesian Analysis Of Noisy Data For A Virus Model, Alejandro Mejia Jan 2017

Study Of Parameter Estimation And Model Calibration Using Bayesian Analysis Of Noisy Data For A Virus Model, Alejandro Mejia

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Numerous engineering problems are concerned with the challenge of representing real life systems through mathematical equations: modeling. Properly generated mathematical models can accurately predict the behavior of natural processes. The key objective of model development is to correctly build a set of equations or expressions that can reproduce the results observed from experimental measurements. By following this methodology, sources of error and uncertainty will arise as most natural processes have random factors that make the results stochastic, and therefore can never be exactly reproduced. A model can try to best approximate the actual outcome, but many times assumptions or simplifications …

Inhibiting The Cannabinoid Catabolic Enzyme Magl To Potentiate The Anti-Arthritic Properties Of The Synthetic Glucocorticoid Dexamethasone, Sara R. Nass Jan 2017

Inhibiting The Cannabinoid Catabolic Enzyme Magl To Potentiate The Anti-Arthritic Properties Of The Synthetic Glucocorticoid Dexamethasone, Sara R. Nass

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA, Table 1) is the most common type of inflammatory arthritis, and is characterized by swelling, inflammation, pain, and destruction of the synovial joints (i.e., knees, elbows, wrists, hips, and fingers). Glucocorticoid receptor agonists are a type of steroid hormone and are among the most common treatments for inflammatory arthritis because of their powerful anti-inflammatory effects. However, harmful side effects are associated with these glucocorticoids (GCs), including increasing patients' vulnerability to infections. Cannabinoids (i.e., cannabis-like signaling molecules) exert anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects with limited side effects compared to traditional immunosuppressants making them excellent targets for the development of …

Cannabinoid Withdrawal Produces Altered Somatic And Emotionality-Related Behavior In Mice, Kristen R. Trexler Jan 2017

Cannabinoid Withdrawal Produces Altered Somatic And Emotionality-Related Behavior In Mice, Kristen R. Trexler

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Cannabis sativa is the most commonly abused illicit drug in the United States. An estimated 9 percent of those who use cannabis will develop some level of cannabinoid use disorder (CUD). Although behavioral therapy has some success in treating CUD, many users still relapse. Moreover, there are no FDA approved pharmacological treatments available to complement behavioral therapy. The need for appropriate treatments highlights the need for nonhuman animal models to test target compounds. The current study aimed to (1) evaluate the MAGL inhibitor JZL184 as a possible treatment for cannabinoid withdrawal, and (2) to develop a spontaneous model of cannabinoid …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A comprehensive review of current literature was conducted to investigate nutrient retention, texture and color during processing and storage of green beans. Consumers do not take into consideration of the effects of processing and storage on the nutritional and sensory quality of the green beans. Freezing and canning are the main processing methods used to extend the shelf-life of green beans. Both frozen and canned green beans are blanched during processing. Green beans are either frozen after blanching or for canning undergo additional thermal processing. Ascorbic acid was found to remain stable after steam blanching at 90°C for 3.5 minutes. …

Us-Cool Retaliation: The Wto’S Article 22.6 Arbitration, Chad P. Bown, Rachel Brewster Jan 2017

Us-Cool Retaliation: The Wto’S Article 22.6 Arbitration, Chad P. Bown, Rachel Brewster

Faculty Scholarship

This paper examines the World Trade Organization’s Article 22.6 arbitration report on the dispute over the United States’ country of origin labeling (US–COOL) regulation for meat products. At prior phases of the legal process, a WTO Panel and the Appellate Body had sided with Canada and Mexico by finding that the US regulation had negatively affected their exports of livestock – cattle and hogs – to the US market. The arbitrators authorized Canada and Mexico to retaliate by over $1 billion against US exports – the second largest authorized retaliation on record and only the twelfth WTO dispute to reach …

Patriotic Philanthropy? Financing The State With Gifts To Government, Margaret H. Lemos, Guy-Uriel Charles Jan 2017

Patriotic Philanthropy? Financing The State With Gifts To Government, Margaret H. Lemos, Guy-Uriel Charles

Faculty Scholarship

Federal and state law prohibit government officials from accepting gifts or “emoluments” from outside sources. The purpose of gift bans, like restrictions on more explicit forms of bribery, is to protect the integrity of political processes and to ensure that decisions about public policy are made in the public interest — not to advance a private agenda. Similar considerations animate regulations on campaign funding and lobbying. Yet private entities remain free to offer gifts to government itself, to foot the bill for particular public projects they would like to see government pursue. Such gifts — dubbed “patriotic philanthropy” by one …

Repugnance Management And Transactions In The Body, Kieran Healy, Kimberly D. Krawiec Jan 2017

Repugnance Management And Transactions In The Body, Kieran Healy, Kimberly D. Krawiec

Faculty Scholarship

Researchers have made progress in understanding the role of repugnance in transactions involving the human body. Yet, often, the focus remains on exchange between individuals and how they mentally cope (or not) with repugnance. But these exchanges also entail a “vertical” dimension in which organizational and state actors both directly manage repugnance and also limit the repugnance management tools available to the marketplace. Analyzing repugnance and its management as an organizational and regulatory problem, in addition to an individual one, suggests that a single, harmonized system of exchange in bodily goods is unlikely to emerge with the passage of time.

Signing Statements And Presidentializing Legislative History, John De Figueiredo, Edward H. Stiglitz Jan 2017

Signing Statements And Presidentializing Legislative History, John De Figueiredo, Edward H. Stiglitz

Faculty Scholarship

Presidents often attach statements to the bills they sign into law, purporting to celebrate, construe, or object to provisions in the statute. Though long a feature of U.S. lawmaking, the President has avowedly attempted to use these signing statements as tool of strategic influence over judicial decision making since the 1980s — as a way of creating “presidential legislative history” to supplement and, at times, supplant the traditional congressional legislative history conventionally used by the courts to interpret statutes. In this Article, we examine a novel dataset of judicial opinion citations to presidential signing statements to conduct the most comprehensive …

Cumulative Constitutional Rights, Kerry Abrams, Brandon L. Garrett Jan 2017

Cumulative Constitutional Rights, Kerry Abrams, Brandon L. Garrett

Faculty Scholarship

Cumulative constitutional rights are ubiquitous. Plaintiffs litigate multiple constitutional violations, or multiple harms, and judges use multiple constitutional provisions to inform interpretation. Yet judges, litigants, and scholars have often criticized the notion of cumulative rights, including in leading Supreme Court rulings, such as Lawrence v. Texas, Employment Division v. Smith, and Miranda v. Arizona. Recently, the Court attempted to clarify some of this confusion. In its landmark opinion in Obergefell v. Hodges, the Court struck down state bans on same-sex marriage by pointing to several distinct but overlapping protections inherent in the Due Process Clause, including the right to individual …

Coupling Ecological And Social Network Models To Assess “Transmission” And “Contagion” Of An Aquatic Invasive Species, Danielle Haak, Brian D. Fath, Valery E. Forbes, Dustin R. Martin, Kevin L. Pope Jan 2017

Coupling Ecological And Social Network Models To Assess “Transmission” And “Contagion” Of An Aquatic Invasive Species, Danielle Haak, Brian D. Fath, Valery E. Forbes, Dustin R. Martin, Kevin L. Pope

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

Network analysis is used to address diverse ecological, social, economic, and epidemiological questions, but few efforts have been made to combine these field-specific analyses into interdisciplinary approaches that effectively address how complex systems are interdependent and connected to one another. Identifying and understanding these cross-boundary connections improves natural resource management and promotes proactive, rather than reactive, decisions. This research had two main objectives; first, adapt the framework and approach of infectious disease network modeling so that it may be applied to the socio-ecological problem of spreading aquatic invasive species, and second, use this new coupled model to simulate the spread …

Rage, Rage Against The Dying Of The Light: A Rhetorical Analysis Of The Role Of Existentialism, Grieving, And Space In Science Fiction Films, Daniel J. Roemer Jan 2017

Rage, Rage Against The Dying Of The Light: A Rhetorical Analysis Of The Role Of Existentialism, Grieving, And Space In Science Fiction Films, Daniel J. Roemer

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

This research explores a collection of science fiction films released in four consecutive years that are wholly unique among the genre, including Gravity (2013), Interstellar (2014), The Martian (2015), and Arrival (2016). These films advance themes first enacted in 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) and Contact (1997). In fact, Ron Howard’s Apollo 13, while based on a real event, set the stage for many of the more frantic scenes of the four films under study. The films are examined using genre analysis in order to first illuminate common criteria that are found within the films, and then to explore why …

Invasion Routes And Evolution Of Brook Stickleback (Culaea Inconstans) In Eastern Washington, Samuel Gunselman

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

Chapter 1. Invasive species pose a serious threat to native ecosystems. In eastern Washington brook stickleback (Culaea inconstans) is an important invasive species, especially at Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge, where they compete with waterfowl for food resources and are associated with declines in habitat quality. Understanding the invasion routes of this invasive species may help managers implement strategies to prevent further spread and mitigate damages caused by these fish. The objectives of this study were to identify the most likely point of brook stickleback invasion, to determine their most likely invasion routes, and to investigate landscape features and processes that …

The Effects Of Predictor Method Factors On Selection Outcomes: A Modular Approach To Personnel Selection Procedures, Filip Lievens, Paul R. Sackett Jan 2017

The Effects Of Predictor Method Factors On Selection Outcomes: A Modular Approach To Personnel Selection Procedures, Filip Lievens, Paul R. Sackett

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Past reviews and meta-analyses typically conceptualized and examined selection procedures as holistic entities. We draw on the product design literature to propose a modular approach as a complementary perspective to conceptualizing selection procedures. A modular approach means that a product is broken down into its key underlying components. Therefore, we start by presenting a modular framework that identifies the important measurement components of selection procedures. Next, we adopt this modular lens for reviewing the available evidence regarding each of these components in terms of affecting validity, subgroup differences, and applicant perceptions, as well as for identifying new research directions. As …
