Day Hikers And Bear Safety: An Elaboration Perspective On Communication In Yellowstone National Park, Zachary David Miller
Day Hikers And Bear Safety: An Elaboration Perspective On Communication In Yellowstone National Park, Zachary David Miller
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
As the National Park Service (NPS) celebrates its 100th year, Yellowstone National Park – the world’s first national park - is dealing with a variety of difficult and complex challenges. Human-wildlife conflict has become a flashpoint for these challenges, as increased visitation results in fewer managers dealing with more people in the park. A recent spate of deaths of day hikers in the park due to grizzly bears set further focus on this point. Yellowstone officials realized that effective communication strategies are more important than ever before.
This research was part of a broader project designed to examine the effectiveness …
Drivers And Feedbacks Of The Fire-Grazing Interaction In The Northern Great Plains, Jacob E. Powell
Drivers And Feedbacks Of The Fire-Grazing Interaction In The Northern Great Plains, Jacob E. Powell
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
The fire-grazing interaction is well studied in mesic grasslands worldwide, but research is lacking in semiarid systems. In addition, the fire-grazing interaction reduces the invasion of exotic forage species in mesic grasslands by increasing the scale of grazing selection and may be a tool to control invasive plants in other grasslands. We examined the principal drivers and feedbacks of the fire-grazing interaction on the strength of cattle grazing selection, forage quantity and quality, and vegetation structure and composition in two pastures in northeast Montana at The Nature Conservancy’s Matador Ranch. We also determined the influence of time since fire, within …
Explaining And Monitoring Population Performance In Grizzly And American Black Bears, Jeffrey Brian Stetz
Explaining And Monitoring Population Performance In Grizzly And American Black Bears, Jeffrey Brian Stetz
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Understanding how environmental factors influence wildlife populations is at the heart of ecology and management. Populations and their habitats are, however, inherently dynamic, which requires monitoring responses to changes in the environment. Beyond quantifying population dynamics, understanding why populations respond as they do may allow improved predictions within and across populations, ideally leading to better management. Grizzly bears (Ursus arctos) and American black bears (U. americanus) have been researched in North America for decades, providing excellent opportunities to explore ecological questions involving inter- and intraspecific competition and responses to spatial and temporal variation in resources. The wealth of data collected …
Ground Fires: Essays On Land And Scouting, Matthew R. Hart
Ground Fires: Essays On Land And Scouting, Matthew R. Hart
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Ground Fires is a collection of creative nonfiction probing the social and environmental complexities that marked the narrator’s long membership in the Boy Scouts of America. I grew up a Scout, part of a quirky, adventurous troop in a New England college town. After earning Eagle and graduating high school, I moved west, working for seven summers and a few more seasons at Philmont Scout Ranch in northern New Mexico. I led backpacking trips through the mountains and high desert, teaching teenagers about land I knew and loved, land that was changing fast. From bears to wildfire to challenging politics, …
A Biogeographic Perspective On The Impacts And Importance Of Rodent Granivory On Native Vs. Invasive Plants, Jacob Elias Lucero
A Biogeographic Perspective On The Impacts And Importance Of Rodent Granivory On Native Vs. Invasive Plants, Jacob Elias Lucero
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
One of the most well-known explanations for the success of invasive plants in novel environments is enemy release, which predicts that 1) invasive plants are limited by natural enemies in the native range but not the non-native range, and 2) native competitors in recipient communities remain limited by their natural enemies. Despite considerable empirical attention, very few studies have tested these basic predictions, especially with respect to generalist herbivores. We tested whether invasive cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum) has experienced enemy release from granivorous rodents – an important guild of generalists – using exclosures and experimental seed additions in western Asia (where …
Utilization Of Landsat Imagery To Assess The Impacts Of Oil And Gas Extraction On The Tazovsky Peninsula, Siberia, Nicholas B. Kline
Utilization Of Landsat Imagery To Assess The Impacts Of Oil And Gas Extraction On The Tazovsky Peninsula, Siberia, Nicholas B. Kline
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Climatic warming of the Arctic is leading to landscape change through cascading biophysical feedbacks; development, such as oil and gas exploration and extraction, can accelerate or worsen these impacts. Due to restricted access to oil and natural gas fields, in situ environmental impact studies are only allowed in some regions. Satellite imagery analysis provides a mean for assessing impacts in areas with limited access. The Yamburg oil and gas field in western Siberia serves as a case study to assess the effects of infrastructure on an Arctic landscape.
This project quantifies the land-cover disturbance that occurred during the development and …

Isotope Investigation Of Nitrate In Soils And Agricultural Drain Waters Of The Lower Yakima Valley, Washington, Dallin Jensen
Isotope Investigation Of Nitrate In Soils And Agricultural Drain Waters Of The Lower Yakima Valley, Washington, Dallin Jensen
All Master's Theses
Nitrate in the groundwater of the Lower Yakima Valley, Washington has long been known to frequently exceed the EPA maximum contaminant level standard for potable water (10 mg/L), adversely impacting communities with disadvantaged socio-economic status. In this research, nitrogen and oxygen isotopic signatures were determined for nitrate soil leachates and irrigation return flow collected in the Lower Yakima Valley, Washington and compared to previous isotopic studies of nitrate in Central Washington. δ15N, δ18O and Δ17O values are used to constrain sources of to groundwater. Isotope signatures for nitrate from soil leachate largely overlapped with …
Impact Of Ideological Disagreements On International Relations: A Study On Islam And The West, Bashir Abulqaraya
Impact Of Ideological Disagreements On International Relations: A Study On Islam And The West, Bashir Abulqaraya
All Works
In order to analyse the impact of these ideological disagreements between Islam and the West on international political behaviour and international relations, this paper highlights the different visions of Western societies’ understanding of the meaning of divinity and prophecy compared with that of Muslim societies. Accordingly, the paper focuses on exploring multiple opinions of Western intellectual elites in regards to this issue in addition to the approach by the media and common traditions in the West. However, the paper assumes that, despite the existence of a misconception in Western societies toward the meaning of prophecy, there are positive aspects in …
Examining The Reversal Of Vocal Fold Dehydration Using Aerosolized Saline In An Excised Larynx Model, Maya Elena Stevens
Examining The Reversal Of Vocal Fold Dehydration Using Aerosolized Saline In An Excised Larynx Model, Maya Elena Stevens
Theses and Dissertations
Previous studies have found vocal fold hydration to be crucial for healthy function of the vocal mechanism. Surface tissue hydration facilitates efficient vocal fold oscillation. The composition of vocal fold surface fluid includes protective water and mucus layers, similar to the fluid that covers the mucosa and epithelia of the upper airway. Laryngeal dehydration has been linked to several factors such as mouth breathing, obstructive sleep apnea, dry air exposure, upper airway hypersensitivity, and certain diseases or behavioral voice use factors. Laryngeal dehydration affects phonation threshold pressure (PTP) and phonation threshold flow (PTF), defined as the pressure and flow observed …

© 2017 APA, all rights reserved). Cues that signal rewards can motivate reward-seeking behaviors, even for outcomes that are not currently desired. Three experiments examined this phenomenon, using an outcome-selective Pavlovian-instrumental transfer (PIT) design and an outcome devaluation procedure. In Experiment 1, participants learned to perform one response to earn crisps points and another response to earn popcorn points. One outcome was then devalued by adulterating it to make it taste unpleasant. On test, overall response choice was biased toward the outcome that had not been devalued, indicating goal-directed control. Stimuli that signaled crisps and popcorn also biased instrumental response …
Cultural Differences In Attention: Eye Movement Evidence From A Comparative Visual Search Task., Albandri Alotaibi, Geoffrey Underwood, Alastair D. Smith
Cultural Differences In Attention: Eye Movement Evidence From A Comparative Visual Search Task., Albandri Alotaibi, Geoffrey Underwood, Alastair D. Smith
School of Psychology
Individual differences in visual attention have been linked to thinking style: analytic thinking (common in individualistic cultures) is thought to promote attention to detail and focus on the most important part of a scene, whereas holistic thinking (common in collectivist cultures) promotes attention to the global structure of a scene and the relationship between its parts. However, this theory is primarily based on relatively simple judgement tasks. We compared groups from Great Britain (an individualist culture) and Saudi Arabia (a collectivist culture) on a more complex comparative visual search task, using simple natural scenes. A higher overall number of fixations …
Residents' Attitudes Toward Tourism On Catalina Island, Kristin Braun
Residents' Attitudes Toward Tourism On Catalina Island, Kristin Braun
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Catalina Island, located off the coast of Southern California, has been a tourist destination for over 100 years and continues to draw large numbers of visitors. This study seeks to determine the attitudes of permanent residents of Catalina Island toward past, current, and future development and tourism on the island. Local communities of destination areas are often excluded from having input toward tourism development which affects their daily lives. This thesis examines Catalina Island residents’ personal accounts concerning their opinions about tourism, current and future tourism plans, and community involvement. This research employed a mixed method approach including, participant observation, …
Cooperative Learning Through Storytelling And The Plant World, Emma Hathaway
Cooperative Learning Through Storytelling And The Plant World, Emma Hathaway
University Honors Theses
At a time when young people are disengaging in school, how do we begin to acknowledge that we, as a nation have failed them and how might we look at storytelling and the plant world to establish more inclusive practices in education? Data from a 2015 American Community Survey suggests that in the state of Hawai'i, 40% of public school 8th graders do not meet the Department of Education (DOE) standards in mathematics. This fall, the National Center for Educational Statistics noted that over half of the country’s public schools reported incidents of criminal activity. As a way to …
A Critical View Of Helminthic Therapy: Is It A Viable Form Of Treatment For Immune Disorders Under The Category Of Inflammatory Bowel Disease?, Alyssa Murphy
University Honors Theses
In the developed world, Crohn’s disease and colitis affects the lives of many individuals. Recently, a new form of treatment for these autoimmune diseases has gained recognition. This treatment uses helminths (Trichuris trichiura and Trichuris suis) as an immunomodulant to a human immune system. Various studies (Summers et. al., 2004; Dige et. al., 2016; Lopes et. al., 2016) have shown the safety and viability of this form of treatment, but many believe this area of research leaves much to be desired. Through this paper, the topic of helminthic therapy and its viability as a form of treatment for …

Proteoglycan Neofunctions: Regulation Of Inflammation And Autophagy In Cancer Biology., Liliana Schaefer, Claudia Tredup, Maria A. Gubbiotti, Renato V. Iozzo
Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers
Inflammation and autophagy have emerged as prominent issues in the context of proteoglycan signaling. In particular, two small, leucine-rich proteoglycans, biglycan and decorin, play pivotal roles in the regulation of these vital cellular pathways and, as such, are intrinsically involved in cancer initiation and progression. In this minireview, we will address novel functions of biglycan and decorin in inflammation and autophagy, and analyze new emerging signaling events triggered by these proteoglycans, which directly or indirectly modulate these processes. We will critically discuss the dual role of proteoglycan-driven inflammation and autophagy in tumor biology, and delineate the potential mechanisms through which …

The Biological Flora Of Coastal Dunes And Wetlands: Avicennia Germinans (L.) L., Robert I. Lonard, Frank W. Judd, Kenneth R. Summy, Hudson R. Deyoe, Richard Stalter
School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)
Avicennia germinans (L.) L. is a pantropical, subtropical, and occasionally warm-temperate mangrove species that occurs on shorelines that have a broad horizontal tidal range. Also known as black mangrove, stands typically develop under anoxic, water-logged conditions in substrates of silt or clay. Black mangrove can tolerate salinity values ranging from 0 to 90 parts per thousand. Salt is excreted from salt glands on both leaf epidermal surfaces, and aerosol salt spray and salt crystals are frequently observed on the upper leaf epidermis. Avicennia germinans is viviparous. The embryos have no dormancy requirements, and there is no seed bank. This mangrove …
Fish Oil With Higher Dha Content And Voluntary Exercise Decreases Postmenopausal Bone Loss, Jameela Banu, Gabriel Fernandes
Fish Oil With Higher Dha Content And Voluntary Exercise Decreases Postmenopausal Bone Loss, Jameela Banu, Gabriel Fernandes
School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)
There is increasing evidence suggesting that fish oil (FO) decreases bone resorption by reducing osteoclastogenesis and regular exercise (EX) increases bone mass. EX is associated with increasing bone formation. Therefore, the combined effects of FO intake and EX may have additive effects by both increasing bone formation and decreasing bone resorption. To demonstrate this, we studied the effects of FO and EX on the bone of mice after an ovariectomyinduced bone loss.
Twelve months old C57BL/6 female mice were either sham operated or ovariectomized, divided into different dietary and EX group and maintained for 3 months before sacrifice.
The distal …

The Breeding Bird Community Of A Remnant Urban Woodland In Mcallen, Texas, John S. Brush, Alexis Racelis, Timothy Brush
School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)
We conducted a breeding bird survey of a remnant thorn-forest at McAllen Nature Center in 2015 and 2016 to assess the breeding bird community and compare it to that of a larger, exurban refuge. We recorded 37 territorial species in McAllen Nature Center, including 15 species not reported at the exurban tract. Thirteen of these predominantly used the more open, human -maintained habitats in the northern and western sides of the park. The presence of many common thorn-forest birds, including a subset of the regions “South Texas specialty” species, is encouraging. Small remnant woodlands such as McAllen Nature Center may …

Predictors Of Information Retrieval Effectiveness Among Library And Information Science Undergraduates In Kwara State Universities, Adeyinka Tella
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
In this information age, it is observed that, as the quantity of information grows the ability of individuals to search and retrieve the needed information decreases in a dramatically manner, which implies that our information retrieval activity lacks effectiveness. It assumed that some factors should be responsible; however, there is no empirical evidence that predict or determine information retrieval effectiveness. This study examined predictors of information retrieval effectiveness among Library and Information Science (LIS) undergraduate students in universities in Kwara State, Nigeria; considered correlation among the predictors of information retrieval effectiveness, identify the best predictive factor of information retrieval effectiveness, …

Ownership Of Intellectual Property In The Library Complex, Patrick Roughen
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
In order to broadly explore intellectual property in the context of the library complex, this research examines the patents produced by companies that provide goods and services to libraries, as well as patents associated with international libraries. This paper also surveys the trademarks and copyrights held by Charlotte Mecklenburg Library, located in Charlotte, North Carolina. This research suggests ways in which development of intellectual property by U.S. libraries might evolve in the future, with evidence obtained primarily through the searching of online databases.
