Autonomous Driving With A Simulation Trained Convolutional Neural Network, Cameron Franke
Autonomous Driving With A Simulation Trained Convolutional Neural Network, Cameron Franke
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Autonomous vehicles will help society if they can easily support a broad range of driving environments, conditions, and vehicles.
Achieving this requires reducing the complexity of the algorithmic system, easing the collection of training data, and verifying operation using real-world experiments. Our work addresses these issues by utilizing a reflexive neural network that translates images into steering and throttle commands. This network is trained using simulation data from Grand Theft Auto V~\cite{gtav}, which we augment to reduce the number of simulation hours driven. We then validate our work using a RC car system through numerous tests. Our system successfully drive …

Using A Mixed-Methods Approach To Understand Urban Children's Nature Conceptions, Ecological Worldviews And Environmental Perceptions And Preferences Before And After Attending An Environmental Education Program, Alejandra Maria Bozzolasco
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
The main objective of this dissertation is to utilize multiple instruments to measure urban children’s nature conceptions, ecological worldviews, and environmental perceptions and preferences, and to determine whether they are impacted by an environmental education (EE) intervention. This information is critical today in light of growing urbanization that is considered a contributor to nature deficit disorder (NDD) in which children, particularly urban children, are growing up distanced from the natural world, thereby impacting children’s development, public health, and the environment. Urban children from northern New Jersey who attended the New Jersey School of Conservation’s (NJSOC) EE program participated in this …

Expression, Purification And Characterization Of Lysine Methyltransferase Smyd5, Wen Xue
Expression, Purification And Characterization Of Lysine Methyltransferase Smyd5, Wen Xue
Wayne State University Theses
Methylation of histones and non-histone proteins play vital roles in numerous cellular processes including gene expression regulation and DNA damage response. The identifications of methyltransferase SMYD protein family are not well characterized. SMYD5 is a unique and critical member of SMYD family involved in immune response, stem cell renew, hematopoiesis regulation and cancer metastasis. Understanding its function and structure is monumental to human disease. With the achievement of SMYD5 expression and purification, the association between SMYD5 and its substrate histone H4 has been investigated. While possessing a poly-E tail instead of the TPR domain included in other members, SMYD5 is …

Enduring Originalism, Kevin C. Walsh
Enduring Originalism, Kevin C. Walsh
Law Faculty Publications
If our law requires originalism in constitutional interpretation, then that would be a good reason to be an originalist. This insight animates what many have begun to call the "positive turn" in originalism. Defenses of originalism in this vein are "positive" in that they are based on the status of the Constitution, and constitutional law, as positive law. This approach shifts focus away from abstract conceptual or normative arguments about interpretation and focuses instead on how we actually understand and apply the Constitution as law. On these grounds, originalism rests on a factual claim about the content of our law: …
Republicanism And Natural Rights At The Founding, Jud Campbell
Republicanism And Natural Rights At The Founding, Jud Campbell
Law Faculty Publications
Today we tend to think about natural rights as non-positivist claims to limits on governmental authority — typically claims derived from religion, morality, or logic. These “rights,” by their very definition, exist independent of governmental control. Indeed, that is what makes them “natural.” This Essay, responding to Randy Barnett's Our Republican Constitution, sketches a different view of Founding-Era natural rights, their relationship to governmental authority, and their enforceability. With the exception of certain “rights of the mind,” natural rights were not really “rights” at all, in the sense of being determinate legal privileges or immunities. Rather, embracing natural rights meant …

Adrenal Crises: Perspectives And Research Directions, R Rushworth, D Torpy, H Falhammar
Adrenal Crises: Perspectives And Research Directions, R Rushworth, D Torpy, H Falhammar
Medical Papers and Journal Articles
Adrenal crises (AC) are life-threatening complications of adrenal insufficiency (AI). These events have an estimated incidence of between 5 and 10 ACs/100 patient years (PY) and are responsible for some of the increased morbidity and excess mortality experienced by patients with AI. Treatment involves urgent administration of IV/IM hydrocortisone and IV fluids. Patient education regarding preventive measures, such as increasing the dose of replacement therapy (“stress dosing”) when sick, using parenteral hydrocortisone as necessary and accessing medical assistance promptly, is still considered the best approach to averting the onset of an AC at times of physiological stress, most commonly an …

Gene Expression Analysis Of Bovine Embryonic Disc, Trophoblast And Parietal Hypoblast At The Start Of Gastrulation, P Pfeffer, C Smith, P Maclean, D Berg
Medical Papers and Journal Articles
In cattle early gastrulation-stage embryos (Stage 5), four tissues can be discerned: (i) the top layer of the embryonic disc consisting of embryonic ectoderm (EmE); (ii) the bottom layer of the disc consisting of mesoderm, endoderm and visceral hypoblast (MEH); (iii) the trophoblast (TB); and (iv) the parietal hypoblast. We performed microsurgery followed by RNA-seq to analyse the transcriptome of these four tissues as well as a developmentally earlier pre-gastrulation embryonic disc. The cattle EmE transcriptome was similar at Stages 4 and 5, characterised by the OCT4/SOX2/NANOG pluripotency network. Expression of genes associated with primordial germ cells suggest their presence …

Editorial Commentary: The Acrid Bioscrew In Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction Of The Knee, Leo Pinczewski, Lucy J. Salmon
Medical Papers and Journal Articles
Bioresorbable screws have been widely adopted for graft fixation in knee anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction on the promise of screw resorbtion and replacement by bone. When considering the value of bioresorbable screws, it is imperative to understand that the “A” in PGA and PLA, the base ingredient of all bioscrews, is for Acid. All resorb by a process of hydrolysis; the speed and extent of resorbtion is determined by both the acidity of the screw and the environment in which it is placed. Regrettably, the promise of reliable, predictable screw resorbtion and replacement by bone remains elusive, despite the …

Lateralization of behaviors and information processing are common across species. Hypothesized to be crucial for more efficient responding to environmental stimuli, lateralization has been investigated for a number of topics. Cetaceans are proposed to be hemispheric specialists, given a small corpus callosum, complete decussation of the optic nerve, and the ability to respond to a different visual stimulus presented to each eye simultaneously. Research with cetaceans has shown strong biases in a number of behaviors, including swimming, foraging, social interactions, and responses to myriad visual stimuli. Given similar evolutionary pressures, different species of cetaceans should display similar lateralized preferences. Previous …
Heme Oxygenase 1 Expression After Traumatic Brain Injury And Effect Of Pharmacological Manipulation On Functional Recovery., Nicholas H. Russell
Heme Oxygenase 1 Expression After Traumatic Brain Injury And Effect Of Pharmacological Manipulation On Functional Recovery., Nicholas H. Russell
Theses and Dissertations
Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is an increasingly diagnosed constellation of injuries derived from acute mechanical trauma to the brain. With the rise of advanced neuroimaging techniques recent focus has oriented primarily towards the mild-moderate range of TBI which previously was missed diagnostically. Characteristically, these advances have shown increasing areas of micro-hemorrhage in susceptible areas of the brain and to date there are no treatment modalities targeting micro-hemorrhages or their sequelae. This dissertation explores the effects of the resulting heme processing response in the days following injury with a particular focus on inducing early heme clearance from the parenchyma using a …
Persistence Of The Larval Environment On Post-Metamorphic Performance And Population Dynamics In Amphibians, Julie Charbonnier
Persistence Of The Larval Environment On Post-Metamorphic Performance And Population Dynamics In Amphibians, Julie Charbonnier
Theses and Dissertations
Organisms with complex life cycles may experience diverse stressors during their development. Stressors experienced in early life stages may influence the quantity and quality of individuals in later life stages. However, it is unclear if these effects persist later in life and how they may influence population dynamics. This dissertation uses two amphibian species, the Western spadefoot toad (Pelobates cultripes) and the spotted salamander (Ambystoma maculatum) to explore how biotic and abiotic factors experienced in aquatic and terrestrial environments influence phenotype and survival. We use a combination of field mesoscosm studies, laboratory studies and modeling to …

PNPase is a gene implicated as a potential target for cancer therapy; human mutations also present with deafness, myopathies, and neuropathies. In this study, C. elegans was used to investigate the effect of knocking out PNPase in a whole animal. C. elegans knockdown studies have reported an extended lifespan via an increase in ROS production. Further noted are larger mitochondria and an increase in fzo-1 expression. Knockout animals previously constructed using CRISPR/Cas9 were used for this study. We aimed to confirm these findings validating previous studies. It was discovered that PNPase knockout animals demonstrated a similar lifespan extension that was …
Antidepressant-Like Effects Of Amisulpride, Ketamine, And Their Enantiomers On Differential-Reinforcement-Of-Low-Rate (Drl) Operant Responding In Male C57/Bl/6 Mice, Doug Smith
Theses and Dissertations
Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a widespread psychiatric disorder that affects millions of people worldwide and is hypothesized to occur due to impairments in several neurotransmitter systems, including the monoaminergic and glutamatergic neurotransmitter systems. Antidepressant medications targeting multiple monoamine neurotransmitters have been shown to be effective for the treatment of depression. Racemic amisulpride is an atypical antipsychotic that has been used at low doses to treat dysthymia, a mild form of depression, and functions as an antagonist at DA2/3, 5-HT2B, and 5-HT7 receptors. Recent preclinical studies have suggested that the S(+) isomer may be more …
Evolution Of Antagonistic Relationships In Proteins: A Case Study Of Radialis- And Diviricata-Like Genes, Ao Gao
Theses and Dissertations
The antagonistic relationship of proteins describes the opponent interactions that result in one protein suppressing the function of another. Developmental genetic studies of Antirrhinum majus demonstrated that two transcription factors from the MYB gene family, RAD and DIV, interact through antagonism to regulate floral dorsoventral asymmetry. Interestingly, similar antagonistic interactions were found among proteins of FSM1 (RAD-like), MYBI (DIV-like), and DRIF in Solanum lycopersicum, which is involved in fruit development. Here, we report on the homology of these antagonistic MYB proteins based on reconstruction of the phylogeny of I-box-like and R-R-type clades, where RAD- and DIV-like belong, …
