Objectives To evaluate characteristics and prognostic factors of open globe injuries (OGI) presented to King Fahad Specialist Hospital in the Jazan region, Saudi Arabia. Methods This study is a retrospective review of medical records of OGI patients who underwent operative repair of their injuries in King Fahad Central Hospital, Jazan, Saudi Arabia between January 2011 and December 2013. Demographic information, eye injury, preoperative, and postoperative visual acuity were collected. The initial and final visual acuity outcomes were compared to identify subjects who witnessed any improvement in their visual acuity. System monitoring and contingency analysis are crucial functions in power control centers. In order to perform these analyses, a complete model of the power network is needed. Moreover, to account for system configuration dynamics, this model must be continuously updated for the purpose of on-line analysis. Several topology processing schemes have been developed in the literature to accomplish this task. The majority of these schemes process breaker statuses to detect changes in system topology. The development of an automatic, dynamic, parallel, Cartesian, linear forest-of-octree grid generator and partial differential equation (PDE) solver framework is presented. This research is bundled into an application programmed with C++ which uses MPI for distributed parallelism. The application is named paros which stands for PARallel Octree Solver. In its current implementation, the application provides a 'zeroth' order representation of the target geometry, and as such, no cut-cell algorithm, projection method, or immersed boundary condition are implemented. We prove weak and vague convergence results for spectral shift functions associated with self-adjoint one-dimensional Schr\"odinger operators on intervals of the form $(-\ell,\ell)$ with periodic boundary conditions to the full-line spectral shift function in the infinite volume limit $\ell\to \infty$. The approach employed relies on the use of a Krein-type resolvent identity to relate the resolvent of the operator with periodic boundary conditions to the corresponding operator with Dirichlet boundary conditions in combination with various operator theoretic facts.

A time-dependent adjoint approach for obtaining sensitivity derivatives for shape optimizations of acoustic metamaterials and phononic crystals is presented. The gradient-based design procedure is suitable for large numbers of design variables, and results are shown on achieving effective material properties with a unit cell and the broadband noise reduction with periodic arrays of cylinders. The acoustic wave propagation problem is solved in the time-domain using a Streamline Upwind/Petrov Galerkin formulation. Topology parameterization is accomplished using the homogenization method, and shape optimization is subsequently used afterwards to refine the geometries. The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification program serves as a benchmark for ‘green’ construction in the U.S. Although considerable research has investigated the marketability of LEED-certified buildings, no direct attention has been given to assessing if the benefits of LEED certification filter down to the profitability of products manufactured in those buildings. To investigate this potential influence, I conducted a large-scale survey of regional owners of the Volkswagen Passat, which is manufactured in the world's first automobile plant to achieve LEED Platinum status. We use p-value as a basis for hypothesis testing. Electrochemical NOx reduction was studied using a novel, nanostructured nitrogen-doped carbon nanospikes catalyst (CNS). NOx is a major environment and health concern that is typically eliminated using noble-metal gas-phase catalytic reactors. Alternatively, an electrocatalytic approach may reduce NOx to N2 using electric potential and reaction, foregoing noble metal catalysis. For these studies nitrate 〖(NO〗_3^-) and nitrite (〖NO〗_2^-) (the end products of dissolved NOx in water) were used as surrogate reagents. Basic solutions were more favorable than acidic solutions for nitrate reduction. The nitrate reduction reaction with three different electrolytes, Lithium hydroxide, Sodium hydroxide, and Potassium hydroxide has been compared. Identification …
