Competing Visions And Current Debates In Interculturalism In Québec, Marie Mcandrew Dec 2016

Competing Visions And Current Debates In Interculturalism In Québec, Marie Mcandrew

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Competing Visions and Current Debates in Interculturalism in Québec" Marie McAndrew posits that interculturalism is the quest for a middle path between Canadian multiculturalism (criticized for essentializing and isolating cultures) and French Jacobinism (which relegates diversity to the private sphere). The theoretical underpinnings of the three approaches are first compared using major works in political philosophy, sociology of ethnic relations, and social psychology. The polysemic nature of actual policies is then explored through the example of Québec's immigration society where two versions of interculturalism developed since the late 1970s and are still competing. McAndrew analyzes four recent …

Immigrant And Irish Identities In Hand In The Fire And Hamilton's Writing Between 2003 And 2014, Dervila Cooke

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Immigrant and Irish Identities in Hand in the Fire and Hamilton's Writing between 2003 and 2014" Dervila Cooke discusses the intertwining of Irish and immigrant identities. Cooke examines the connection between openness to memory and embracing migrant identities in Hamilton's writing both in the 2010 novel and as a whole. The empathetic and inclusive character of Helen in Hand in the Fire is analyzed in contrast to characters who have repressed memory including the Serbian Vid. Helen's ties to elsewhere, her openness to new influence, and her willingness to engage with traumatic elements of the past (Irish …

Young People's Literature Of Algerian Immigration In France, Anne Schneider Dec 2016

Young People's Literature Of Algerian Immigration In France, Anne Schneider

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Young People's Literature of Algerian Immigration in France" Anne Schneider discusses questions of language, hybridity, and heritage in some works for young people published in France about Algeria and/or Algerian-French identity, by Leïla Sebbar, Jean-Paul Nozière, Azouz Begag, and Michel Piquemal. She argues for the need for an intercultural education at primary school that uses literature about immigration to highlight questions of place, belonging, exile and language. Schneider's focus is on Begag's Un train pour chez nous (2001) and Piquemal's Mon miel, ma douceur (2004). These texts use linguistic hybridity and an emphasis on common human experiences …

Minor Transnational Writing In Ireland, Borbála Faragó Dec 2016

Minor Transnational Writing In Ireland, Borbála Faragó

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Minor Transnational Writing in Ireland" Borbála Faragó investigates the poetic work of some of Ireland's migrant writers through the lens of minor transnationalism. Ireland's peculiar migration history where there are two quite distinct groups of inward migrants, requires careful rethinking of terminology. Faragó proposes to circumnavigate the binary approach of investigating center versus periphery and instead look for lateral connections between marginalized groups. Reading the works of Ireland's internal others brings to the fore issues of authenticity, ethics, and identity that can foreground some of the ambiguities inherent in transnational studies today. Interpreting the oeuvre of these …

Traversing The Borders Of Écriture Migrante And Transnational Writing In Québec, Catherine Khordoc Dec 2016

Traversing The Borders Of Écriture Migrante And Transnational Writing In Québec, Catherine Khordoc

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In "Traversing the Borders of écriture migrante and Transnational Writing in Québec" Catherine Khordoc questions the relevance of the term écriture migrante, which has become a type of ghetto for writers who have immigrated, creating an implicit expectation that immigrant writers write exclusively about experiences of immigration and exile. She proposes a transnational approach as an alternative way of considering contemporary Québécois writing, examining works written by immigrants alongside works by non-immigrants. She discusses four novels, two by authors who have immigrated to Québec (Émile Ollivier and Dany Laferrière), and two by authors who were born and raised in …

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Feline leukemia virus (FeLV) is the cause of neoplastic and degenerative disorders and immunosuppression in domestic cats. FeLV has never been reported in Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris). Necropsy findings of a white Bengal tigress were a subcutaneous mass of 10 cm in diameter in the right rear limb which was classified as fibrosarcoma. In agreement with macroscopic and microscopic lesions, the morphologic diagnosis was consistent with a multisystemic disease characterized by fibrinonecrotic and suppurative broncopneumonia with multifocal severe bronchiectasis, severe icteric hepatomegaly and renal amyloidosis with membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis. Furthermore, a serum sample was positive to FeLV when diagnosed by …

Field Study Of Seroconversion Of Three Different Commercial Vaccines Of Chicken Infectious Anemia Virus In Thailand, Niwat Chansiripornchai

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of different chicken infectious anemia virus (CIAV) vaccine strains in breeders and progeny under field conditions. For this experiment, one commercial poultry company was selected, and independent management for each house was applied to avoid vaccine cross contamination. No natural infection was found before vaccination. BioChek ELISA kits were used, and a minimum of 20 birds per flock were sampled in each sampling time. Three commercial CIAV vaccine strains that are available in Thailand were selected for the study: 26P4 was vaccinated subcutaneously, Cux-1 was vaccinated orally, and Del Ros …

Immunophenotyping Of Cutaneous Extramedullary Plasmacytoma In Two Dogs, Chutchai Piewbang, Sirintra Sirivisoot, Sitthichok Lacharoje, Anudep Rungsipipat, Somporn Techangamsuwan

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Skin biopsied tissues from two dogs, initially diagnosed as hemophagocytic histiocytic sarcoma (HHS) by histopathology, were immunostained with a series of antibodies against lambda light chains, kappa light chains, multiple myeloma oncoprotein 1 (MUM-1), CD-3, paired box 5 (PAX-5), E-cadherin and lysozyme. Heteroduplex polymerase chain reaction for antigen receptor rearrangements (hPARR) was additionally performed on formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissues to rule out lymphomas from histiocytomas. Results showed that both cases were immunopositive for lambda light chains, MUM-1, PAK-5 and lysozyme, indicating a diagnosis of extramedullary plasmacytoma (EMP). Moreover, negative PCR result provided additional evidence confirming the diagnosis. Even though hPARR …

Protection Of Pipe Networks From Water Hammer Effects Using Air Vessels (Case Study: Bosat Kareem El-Dein Water Network)., Kasem El Alfy, O. Rageh, A. Zidan

Mansoura Engineering Journal

Water hammer phenomenon is usually happened in water distribution networks due to pumps power failure or sudden closure, opening valves which lead to generate massive positive and negative pressures that may be catastrophic. In this research Bentley HAMMER Vi 8 is used to study the effect of roughness coefficient on water hammer wave in pipes. There are different methods to control and reduce these transient effects such as surge tanks, air vessels and pressure reducing valves. Choosing one of these methods depends on the design criteria, location and topography that strongly affect the decision maker. Air vessel was chosen in …

Editorial Policy, Religious Freedom Acts And Denying Access To Same-Sex Marriage, Leah N. Williams Dec 2016

Editorial Policy, Religious Freedom Acts And Denying Access To Same-Sex Marriage, Leah N. Williams

Research Papers

Generations of readers have bought and shared space inside the wedding pages in newspapers, and the introduction of same-sex wedding announcements has not always been granted immediate access. Although polls show same-sex marriage has become more generally accepted by society, the lifestyle and complete inclusion have been perceived as being directly challenged by newspaper policies and legislative efforts to pass religious freedom restoration acts. This paper explores the history of the wedding lifestyles pages, the evolution of media coverage surrounding lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) issues and the recent wave of a religious freedom restoration act in Indiana and …

Understanding The Law Of Torts In China: A Political Economy Perspective, Wei Zhang Dec 2016

Understanding The Law Of Torts In China: A Political Economy Perspective, Wei Zhang

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

In this paper, I tried to connect the text of the Chinese tort law with the institutional context of lawmaking in China from a political economy perspective. Two determinants, political influence and populist pressure, were identified for the tort law legislation in China, and a simple spatial model was presented to demonstrate the mechanism through which these determinants might have affected the text of the law. In particular, my research suggested that, when injurers’ political influence kept constant, the populist pressure on the injurer group tended to push the tort law rules toward the pro-victim end. On the contrary, with …

Electromagnetically Induced Alteration Of Hydraulic Conductivity Of Coarse-Grained Soils For Geotechnical Applications, Rakesh Acharya Dec 2016

Electromagnetically Induced Alteration Of Hydraulic Conductivity Of Coarse-Grained Soils For Geotechnical Applications, Rakesh Acharya

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Electromagnetic (EM) waves of various power levels and frequencies can be used to alter the hydraulic conductivity of soil with minimal heat generation. The result can lead to a number of potential applications such as contamination remediation and liquefaction mitigation. In this research, the possibility of radio-frequency (RF) waves’ effect on the excess pore-water pressure (EPWP) generation and hydraulic conductivity of coarse-grained soils has been investigated.

Impact tests were performed on glass beads to examine the effect on the generation of EPWP due to RF waves. These tests were performed on a rigid box made of Plexiglas. The impacts were …

Security Testing With Misuse Case Modeling, Samer Yousef Khamaiseh

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Having a comprehensive model of security requirements is a crucial step towards developing a reliable software system. An effective model of security requirements which describes the possible scenarios that may affect the security aspects of the system under development can be an effective approach for subsequent use in generating security test cases.

Misuse case was first proposed by Sinder and Opdahl as an approach to extract the security requirements of the system under development [1]. A misuse case is a use case representing scenarios that might be followed by a system adversary in order to compromise the system; that is …

When The System Becomes Your Personal Docent: Curated Book Recommendations, Nevena Dragovic

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Curation is the act of selecting, organizing, and presenting content most often guided by professional or expert knowledge. While many popular applications have attempted to emulate this process by turning users into curators, we put an accent on a recommendation system which can leverage multiple data sources to accomplish the curation task. We introduce QBook, a recommender that acts as a personal docent by identifying and suggesting books tailored to the various preferences of each individual user. The goal of the designed system is to address several limitations often associated with recommenders in order to provide diverse and personalized …
