Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of placed implants using two different guided implant surgery materials: thermoplastic vs. 3-D printed surgical guides. Materials and Methods:Twenty duplicate mandibular models, ten thermoplastic and ten 3-D printed surgical guides were used. Twenty implants were placed following the guided surgery protocol. Cone beam computed tomography scans of placed implants and the control implant were superimposed to measure deviations. Results: The thermoplastic group showed average deviations of 3.4 degrees, 1.3mm at the head, and 1.6mm at the apex of the implant compared to 2.36 degrees, 0.51mm, and …

The Role Of Two Homologous E3 Ligases In Muscle Physiology, Gabrielle F. Gloston Dec 2016

The Role Of Two Homologous E3 Ligases In Muscle Physiology, Gabrielle F. Gloston

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Ubiquitin-mediated proteasomal degradation is an essential cellular function that is coordinated by three key components: E1 ubiquitin activating enzyme, E2 ubiquitin conjugating enzyme, and E3 ubiquitin ligases. There are an estimated 600 E3 ligases, some of which share high sequence homology; however, the functional significance often remains unknown. FBXL3 and FBXL21 are two homologous E3 ligases that have previously been reported to dictate circadian periodicity, with FBXL3 being the dominant E3 ligase and FBXL21 playing a regulatory role. A recent Yeast Two-Hybrid screen revealed a new shared target of FBXL3 and FBXL21: Telethonin (also known as TCAP). TCAP is a …

Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary Sacred Waters Film, Cory B. Jones

Communication Studies

The debate to designate a National Marine Sanctuary off the Central Coast of California has been alive for nearly 30 years.

With a recent move by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to nominate the stretch of water as a sanctuary the issue has become one of great concern to local stakeholders.

With concern for additional bureaucracy and regulation that could negatively impact the local economy people choose to stand in opposition. Yet many that are concerned for the future of the region's waters want the protections from offshore oil drilling and other harmful practices that a Sanctuary would …

Engineered Human Acidic Fibroblast Growth Factor (Fgf1) With An Enhanced Thermal And Proteolytic Stability, Duaa Abdullah Almansaf Dec 2016

Engineered Human Acidic Fibroblast Growth Factor (Fgf1) With An Enhanced Thermal And Proteolytic Stability, Duaa Abdullah Almansaf

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Fibroblast growth factor receptor (FGFR) is made up of three significant domains. The most important domain is the intracellular domain where the dimerization and autophosphorylation occur. Fibroblast growth factor (FGF) interacts with specific FGFR to regulate many cellular processes during the embryonic stage. Furthermore, FGF is significant for adults because FGF plays an important role in regulating cellular differentiation as well as wound healing. The cellular regulating processes are initiated through binding FGF to heparin followed by binding FGF/heparin to FGFR to form FGF/heparin/FGFR complex. Thus, FGFR is dimerized and autophosphorylated. The phosphorylation of FGFR triggers downstream signaling pathways, which …

The Neglected History Behind Preble V. Maine Central Railroad Company: Lessons From The "Maine Rule" For Adverse Possession, Luke Meier Dec 2016

The Neglected History Behind Preble V. Maine Central Railroad Company: Lessons From The "Maine Rule" For Adverse Possession, Luke Meier

Hofstra Law Review

Under the “Maine Rule” for adverse possession, only possessors who have the requisite intent can perfect an adverse possession claim. The Maine Rule has been consistently criticized. The history behind the adoption of the Maine Rule, however, and the purpose it was to serve, have been ignored. This Article fills that void. This inquiry leads to some surprising revelations about the Maine Rule. The Maine Rule was originally adopted so as to distinguish prior Maine cases rejecting adverse possession in mistaken boundary situations. The purpose behind the Maine Rule, then, was to enable—rather than prohibit— adverse possession. The history surrounding …

Relocation Redux: Labrador Inuit Population Movements And Inequalities In The Land Claims Era, Kirk Dombrowski, Patrick Habecker, G. Robin Gauthier, Bilal Khan, Joshua Moses Dec 2016

Relocation Redux: Labrador Inuit Population Movements And Inequalities In The Land Claims Era, Kirk Dombrowski, Patrick Habecker, G. Robin Gauthier, Bilal Khan, Joshua Moses

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

The importance of community relocation experiences for aboriginal land claims movements is well documented; the role played by successful land claims in prompting ongoing out-migration is not. Data collected in 2011 on the lives of migrants are used to test three hypotheses: H1, Inuit leaving the land claims area for a nearby nonaboriginal city show markedly different social outcomes based on the length of time since migration; H2, these social outcomes map onto patterns of intergroup boundaries in their new communities; and H3, both of these outcomes are better explained by migration patterns after the land claims than by the …

Carbon And Nitrogen Dynamics Of Anthropogenically Disturbed Seagrass Ecosystems, Alison Shepherd Dec 2016

Carbon And Nitrogen Dynamics Of Anthropogenically Disturbed Seagrass Ecosystems, Alison Shepherd

Theses and Dissertations

As atmospheric CO2 concentrations continue to rise, understanding factors that influence size and longevity of carbon (C) pools within coastal and marine ecosystems (i.e., “blue carbon”) is critical. In 2013, the global average atmospheric CO2 concentration reached 396 ppm, which was the highest recorded level in the last 800,000 years. Recent research acknowledges the importance of “blue carbon” in the global C cycle, finding that these ecosystems capture up to 70% of organic C in the marine realm, rendering them one of the most efficient C sinks on the planet. Specifically, seagrass ecosystems are critically important to the global C …

Developing A Multimetric Index To Assess Resaca Ecosystem Health, Buford J. Lessley Dec 2016

Developing A Multimetric Index To Assess Resaca Ecosystem Health, Buford J. Lessley

Theses and Dissertations

As the only freshwater ecosystem in the lower Rio Grande Valley aside from the Rio itself, resacas are critical habitat for many species of flora and fauna. Old distributaries of the Rio Grande, resacas provided conveyance routes moving floodwater to the Laguna Madre. Today these wetlands are novel ecosystems and are artificially maintained. Urbanization and agriculture have lead to sedimentation, habitat loss, contaminants, poor water quality, and invasive species. The objective of this study was to assess and monitor resaca pools and to compose the Resaca Health Index (RHI) from selected indicators of ecosystem structure and function including leaf litter …
