Response Surface Method For Assessing Energy Production From Geopressured Geothermal Reservoirs, Esmail Ansari, Richard Hughes
Response Surface Method For Assessing Energy Production From Geopressured Geothermal Reservoirs, Esmail Ansari, Richard Hughes
Faculty Publications
Developing low-enthalpy geothermal resources along the US Gulf Coast is attractive for reducing global warming and providing clean energy. In this work, synthetic yet representative models for typical geopressured geothermal reservoirs located along the US Gulf Coast are considered. A Box–Behnken experimental design is used to select a small set of these models to perform detailed reservoir simulation runs. Full quadratic linear models are fit to the simulation results, and their sufficiency is confirmed by comparing them to kriging response surfaces. To achieve a higher degree of efficiency in using the response surfaces, Hammersley sequence sampling (HSS) method is used …

The Brave New Path Of Energy Federalism, Jim Rossi
The Brave New Path Of Energy Federalism, Jim Rossi
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
For much of the past 80 years courts have fixated on dual sovereignty as the organizing federalism paradigm under New Deal era energy statutes. Dual sovereignty’s reign emphasized a jurisdictional “bright line,” with a fixed, legalistic boundary between federal and state regulators. This Article explores how recent Supreme Court decisions limit dual sovereignty’s role as the organizing federalism principle under energy statutes.
These recent decisions do not approach federal-state jurisdiction as either/or proposition, but instead recognize it is concurrent in certain contexts. Concurrent jurisdiction opens up a brave new path of possibilities for energy federalism but also has been target …

Roles Of Nucleolin: Focus On Cancer And Anti-Cancer Therapy, Zhuo Chen, Xinhua Xu
Saudi Medical Journal
Nucleolin, a multifunctional protein distributed in the nucleolus, participates in many modulations including rDNA transcription, RNA metabolism, and ribosome assembly. Nucleolin is also found in the cytoplasm and on the cell membrane, and surface nucleolin can bind to various ligands to affect many physiological functions. The expression and localization of nucleolin is often abnormal in cancers, as the differential distribution of nucleolin in cancer can influence the carcinogenesis, proliferation, survival, and metastasis of cancer cells, leading to the cancer progression. Thus, nucleolin may be a novel and promising target for anti-cancer treatment. Here, we describe how nucleolin act functions in …

From Social Networking To Activism: The Role Of Social Media In The Free West Papua Campaign, Jason Titifanue, Jope Tarai, Romitesh Kant, Glen Finau
Pacific Studies
West Papua has one of the most repressive media environments in the world with a long history of media censorship and banning of foreign journalists, and only recently has this policy been somewhat relaxed. The tight media restrictions have led to the increasing use of social media, such as Facebook and Twitter, by West Papuan activists who broadcast the atrocities and human rights violations committed in West Papua. Driven by developments in information and communications technologies, Pacific Islanders are increasingly “switching on” and leveraging social media as a political tool. Digital tools such as hashtags are being used to organize, …

New Rituals For Old: Change And Competition In Samoa, Cluny Macpherson, La‘Avasa Macpherson
Pacific Studies
In precontact Samoa, extended families, āiga, and villages, nu‘u, demonstrated their social and political cohesion in periodic, competitive displays of conspicuous consumption, hospitality, and in warfare. Demonstrations of economic capacity and military superiority increased their sociopolitical capital and established, or maintained, their claims to social and political power. These competitive rituals were central features of precontact social organization: the fa‘asamoa.

Measuring The Financial Shocks Of Natural Disasters: A Panel Study Of U.S. States, Qing Miao, Yilin Hou, Michael Abrigo
Center for Policy Research
This paper employs panel vector autoregression to examine the dynamic fiscal response to disaster shocks. With 50-state, 1970-2013 panel data of state government finance and disaster damage, we estimate disaster impacts on revenue, expenditure, debt issuance, and intergovernmental transfers. We find that following a disaster, states increase program expenditure, but receive more federal transfers. Disasters have limited impact on total tax revenues but amplify fluctuations in sales, income, and property tax revenues. Our findings suggest that disaster-induced additional spending is largely financed through federal transfers, which include not only disaster relief funds but also non-disaster-related public welfare aids.

The purpose of this qualitative research was to generate a grounded theory to comprehend the concept of “inspiring professor” in Mexico. The question to be answered which originated this research was “what are the characteristics of professors who inspire students?”. Thirty- nine professors were interviewed, 19 of them were identified as “truly inspiring” by students. The findings that distinguish inspiring professors are: they …
End-User Innovation Within Information Systems--A Post Deployment Impact Of Enterprise Resource Planning Systems, Amos Allie
Student Scholarship
The focus of this study concentrates on understanding the antecedents that explain post implementation interaction of End-User Analysts (EUA) within unique environments of Enterprise Resource Planning Systems deployment. Although contemporary literature on ERP Systems explain the relevance of End-User Analysts (EUA) at various spheres of post implementation space, we are yet to understand first, what explains End-User outcomes on Post Implementation Processes within ERP Systems. Also how and to what extent do End-Users involvement transform Post Implementation deployment outcomes. In minimizing perceptible projections in post implementation environments, we posit that End-User Analysts are strategically structured within post implementation environments to …

A New System For Human Microrna Functional Evaluation And Network, Jiachun Han
A New System For Human Microrna Functional Evaluation And Network, Jiachun Han
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
MicroRNAs are functionally important endogenous non-coding RNAs that silence host genes in animal and plant via destabilizing the mRNAs or preventing the translation. Given the far-reaching implication of microRNA regulation in human health, novel bioinformatics tools are desired to facilitate the mechanistic understanding of microRNA mediated gene regulation, their roles in biological processes, and the functional relevance among microRNAs. However, most state-of-the-art computational methods still focus on the functional study of microRNA targets and there is no e ective strategy to infer the functional similarity among microRNAs. In this study, we developed a new method to quantitatively measure the functional …
On Path Consistency For Binary Constraint Satisfaction Problems, Christopher G. Reeson
On Path Consistency For Binary Constraint Satisfaction Problems, Christopher G. Reeson
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Constraint satisfaction problems (CSPs) provide a flexible and powerful framework for modeling and solving many decision problems of practical importance. Consistency properties and the algorithms for enforcing them on a problem instance are at the heart of Constraint Processing and best distinguish this area from other areas concerned with the same combinatorial problems. In this thesis, we study path consistency (PC) and investigate several algorithms for enforcing it on binary finite CSPs. We also study algorithms for enforcing consistency properties that are related to PC but are stronger or weaker than PC.
We identify and correct errors in the literature …

Power Management In Heterogeneous Mapreduce Cluster, Rojee Sunuwar
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The growing expenses of power in data centers as compared to the operation costs has been a concern for the past several decades. It has been predicted that without an intervention, the energy cost will soon outgrow the infrastructure and operation cost. Therefore, it is of great importance to make data center clusters more energy efficient which is critical for avoiding system overheating and failures. In addition, energy inefficiency causes not only the loss of capital but also environmental pollution. Various Power Management(PM) strategies have been developed over the years to make system more energy efficient and to counteract the …
