Defining “Accidents” In The Air: Why Tort Law Principles Are Essential To Interpret The Montreal Convention’S “Accident” Requirement, Alexa West Dec 2016

Defining “Accidents” In The Air: Why Tort Law Principles Are Essential To Interpret The Montreal Convention’S “Accident” Requirement, Alexa West

Fordham Law Review

This Note examines the history of, and the reasons for, the Montreal Convention, which in part forces airlines to indemnify passengers for injuries resulting from “accidents”—a term undefined in the treaty. The Montreal Convention and the subsequent case law interpreting it demonstrate how, to qualify as an “accident,” the injury-producing incident must be causally connected to the plane’s operation. Importantly, the causal connection’s adequacy should be evaluated according to American tort jurisprudence even though the accident requirement itself is an exception to general tort law. This Note focuses on a particular type of injury-producing event, a copassenger tort, because of …

An Online Mental Health And Wellness Intervention Supplementing Standard Care Of Depression And Anxiety, Brian Ahmedani, Terri Belville-Robertson, Abigail Hirsch, Anthony Jurayj

Center for Health Policy and Health Services Research Articles

Online interventions offer benefits, but often have not been tested in studies. The aim was to study feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary effectiveness of an online intervention supplementing standard care of depression and anxiety. The study was conducted within a large healthcare system. Three primary care and four behavioral health providers recruited 96 participants. Overall, 91% (n=87) agreed to participate, while 43% (n=41) completed registration and 27% (n=26) logged into the intervention multiple times. Participants referred by behavioral health demonstrated greater involvement. Reductions in depression and anxiety were observed. Most providers were satisfied with the intervention. This study supports future research.

Development Of A Semi-Interpenetrating Network Hydrogel To Study The Effects Of Mild Traumatic Brain Injury On Astrocyte Remodeling, Amanda Ederle Dec 2016

Development Of A Semi-Interpenetrating Network Hydrogel To Study The Effects Of Mild Traumatic Brain Injury On Astrocyte Remodeling, Amanda Ederle

Health, Human Performance and Recreation Undergraduate Honors Theses

Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) are a widespread public health concern affecting over 2.5 million people in the United States alone (1). TBIs are the leading cause of death and disability in children (ages 0-14), and their devastating effects can also be seen in vast population subsets such as professional athletes and combat soldiers (1).

Damaged astrocytes, the specialized glial cells associated with the maintenance of the brain’s environment, respond to injury by altering regulation of certain proteins and ion channels in an attempt to maintain homeostasis (3). Studies have also shown that following a TBI, astrocytes seek to regenerate, a …

In The Child’S Best Interests: Examining International Child Abduction, Adoption, And Asylum, Hannah Loo

Chicago Journal of International Law

In the past few years, the number of cases involving international child abduction has risen significantly. But the primary purpose of the Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction is to protect children against wrongful removal or retention by one parent against the will of the other parent. Under the Convention, the relevant courts are charged with determining where the child’s habitual residence is and whether the child should be returned to the left-behind country. However, in making this determination, courts have faced criticism due to the lack of consideration for the child’s best interests, an international …

Closed Primary, Exposed Preferences: Idaho's Primary System And The Bureaucratic Dilemma, Matthew Ryan May Dec 2016

Closed Primary, Exposed Preferences: Idaho's Primary System And The Bureaucratic Dilemma, Matthew Ryan May

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

The ability to elect representatives is one of the most fundamental rights citizens of the United States of America possess, but the expression of that right looks very different from state to state. A state’s primary system determines not only who participates in an election, but under what circumstances. When a state shifts from one primary system to another, it produces a period of uncertainty, as the electorate must acclimate to new rules and their attendant consequences. Among those who must adjust to the new rules are public state employees—the bureaucracy. When a shift necessitates and introduces a partisan …

Using Near-Infrared Photography To Better Study Snow Microstructure And Its Variability Over Time And Space, Jesse Raymond Dean Dec 2016

Using Near-Infrared Photography To Better Study Snow Microstructure And Its Variability Over Time And Space, Jesse Raymond Dean

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

The methods typically used to study snow stratigraphy, microstructure, and variability are expensive, cumbersome, and often highly subjective. Near-infrared (NIR) photography is a low-cost, portable tool to rapidly collect high-resolution, objective measurements of snow microstructure and variability. To expand its application, an active-source NIR flash was introduced to the traditionally passive-source method. NIR imagery was collected alongside proven snowpit methods such as manual observation, Snow Fork wetness, and Snow Micro-Penetrometer hardness profiles. NIR photography was also deployed in five pits along a 10.6 km transect in Grand Mesa, CO, to track stratigraphy variations in space. The NIR flash was found …

Latin Squares And Their Applications To Cryptography, Nathan O. Schmidt Dec 2016

Latin Squares And Their Applications To Cryptography, Nathan O. Schmidt

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

A latin square of order-n is an n x n array over a set of n symbols such that every symbol appears exactly once in each row and exactly once in each column. Latin squares encode features of algebraic structures. When an algebraic structure passes certain "latin square tests", it is a candidate for use in the construction of cryptographic systems. A transversal of a latin square is a list of n distinct symbols, one from each row and each column. The question regarding the existence of transversals in latin squares that encode the Cayley tables of finite groups …

Continuous Snow Water Equivalent Measurements With Ultra-Wideband Radar: Towards A New Generation Of Real-Time Automated Snow Sensor Arrays, Mark Edward Robertson Dec 2016

Continuous Snow Water Equivalent Measurements With Ultra-Wideband Radar: Towards A New Generation Of Real-Time Automated Snow Sensor Arrays, Mark Edward Robertson

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Snow accounts for the majority of precipitation in many areas of the Western United States, and accurate measurements of the amount of water contained in the snowpack, known as snow water equivalent (SWE), are therefore important for water resource managers. The National Resources Conservation Service Snow Telemetry (SNOTEL) sites are the current standard remote measurement of SWE, with approximately 800 sites across the Western United States. Measurements at these sites are made by snow pillows, which weigh the overburden pressure of a snowpack, and are relatively expensive to install and maintain. Spring runoff is modeled using a 30-year average of …

Two-Way Symmetric Communication Between Public Utilities And The Public, Maria Willacy Dec 2016

Two-Way Symmetric Communication Between Public Utilities And The Public, Maria Willacy

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

This paper presents a multi-disciplinary examination of literature from the fields of public policy and participation, media and public relations, and technical communication as it relates to two-way symmetric communication and how it applies to public utilities and the public. Differences between two-way symmetric communication and other communication/public relations methods are examined, as well as the specific merits of two-way symmetric communication, including its ethical benefits, and criticisms and constraints. Current forms of communication between public utilities and the public are examined, including whether these forms are two-way symmetric. Planning events and those that involve public participation are highlighted as …

Controls On The Presence, Concentration, Storage, And Variability Of Soil Inorganic Carbon In A Semi-Arid Watershed, Christopher Allen Stanbery Dec 2016

Controls On The Presence, Concentration, Storage, And Variability Of Soil Inorganic Carbon In A Semi-Arid Watershed, Christopher Allen Stanbery

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Soil inorganic carbon (SIC) constitutes approximately 40% of terrestrial soil carbon and is an integral part of the global carbon cycle; however, the controls on the storage and flux of inorganic carbon are poorly understood. Soil forming factors controlling SIC storage and flux include climate, organisms, relief, parent material, and time (Jenny, 1941). Rainfall is a primary factor controlling SIC accumulation in arid and semi-arid regions, but the hierarchy of controls on SIC development is complex. The Reynolds Creek Experimental Watershed in southwestern Idaho is an ideal location to study factors influencing SIC, as the carbon pool transitions from predominately …

Using Infrasound Waves To Monitor Tropospheric Weather And Crater Morphology Changes, Hugo David Ortiz Dec 2016

Using Infrasound Waves To Monitor Tropospheric Weather And Crater Morphology Changes, Hugo David Ortiz

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Infrasound waves generated during volcanic eruptions and recorded near the vent are used to study both changing atmospheric conditions and volcano eruption source characteristics. Infrasound data were recorded for a 32 month period at Volcán Tungurahua (Ecuador) by a five-station network located within 6.5 km from the vent. Infrasound detections made through cross-network correlation indicate cyclic eruptive behavior, which is corroborated by reports from the Ecuadorian monitoring agency. Cross-network correlation lag times are used to compute _10 m resolution infrasound source positions, which take into account NOAA models of local wind and temperature. Variable infrasound-derived source locations suggests source migration …

Implementation Evaluation Study: Flipped Classroom Professional Development With Faculty Members To Enhance Students' Engagement In Higher Education, Fatimah Alebrahim Dec 2016

Implementation Evaluation Study: Flipped Classroom Professional Development With Faculty Members To Enhance Students' Engagement In Higher Education, Fatimah Alebrahim

Dissertations

The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore student engagement in higher education by evaluating training provided by experienced faculty members for those faculty desiring to implement a flipped classroom. A case study was utilized; data were collected in the form of online observation, in-class observation, student focus group interviews, faculty individual interviews, and artifacts. The researcher used the utilization-focused evaluation (Patton, 2008) as an implementation evaluation framework for the study. Data were analyzed using deductive analysis that depended on five implementation evaluation elements as general components (effort, monitoring, process, component, and treatment specification). The participants in this study …

Ido1 Is An Integral Mediator Of Inflammatory Neovascularization., Arpita Mondal, Courtney Smith, James B. Duhadaway, Erika Sutanto-Ward, George C. Prendergast, Arturo Bravo-Nuevo, Alexander J. Muller

Kimmel Cancer Center Papers, Presentations, and Grand Rounds

The immune tolerogenic effects of IDO1 (indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase 1) have been well documented and genetic studies in mice have clearly established the significance of IDO1 in tumor promotion. Dichotomously, the primary inducer of IDO1, the inflammatory cytokine IFNγ (interferon-γ), is a key mediator of immune-based tumor suppression. One means by which IFNγ can exert an anti-cancer effect is by decreasing tumor neovascularization. We speculated that IDO1 might contribute to cancer promotion by countering this anti-neovascular effect of IFNγ, possibly through IDO1-potentiated elevation of the pro-tumorigenic inflammatory cytokine IL6 (interleukin-6). In this study, we investigated how genetic loss of IDO1 affects …

"Our Door Is Always Open": Aligning Literacy Learningpractices In Writing Programs And Residential Learningcommunities, Julia Voss Dec 2016

"Our Door Is Always Open": Aligning Literacy Learningpractices In Writing Programs And Residential Learningcommunities, Julia Voss

English

Writing studies has considered college students' literacy development as a chronological progression and as influenced by their off-campus connections to various cultural and professional communities. This project considers students' literacy development across disciplines and university activity systems in which they're simultaneously involved to look at the (missed) opportunities for fostering transfer across writing courses and residential learning communities as parallel—but rarely coordinated—high-impact practices. Rather than calling for the development of additional programs, I argue for building/strengthening connections between these existing programs by highlighting shared learning outcomes focused on literacy skills development and learning how to learn.
