Thermal Stress Analysis Of Unidirectional Composite Material By Fem Modeling, Gopal D. Gulwani

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

Micromechanics of composite is study of complex mechanism of stress and strain transfer between fiber and matrix within a composite as well as distributions of physical fields inside heterogeneous medium. It was used successfully in predicting accurately physical properties like effective stiffness, effective linear thermal expansion of heterogeneous materials like composite. However, when it comes to strength characteristics of composite especially in transversal direction it failed to predict more accurate results. This thesis is focused on thermally induced stress analysis of unidirectional composite by finite element method. Thermal stresses which are dangerously ignored factor in mechanics of composite usually occur …

In addition, this article examines the current shifts in teacher training and provides an overview of evidence-based strategies to support students with ASD.

A Dollar A Day: Child Sponsorship And The Marketization Of Human Development, Taylor Hallett Dec 2016

A Dollar A Day: Child Sponsorship And The Marketization Of Human Development, Taylor Hallett

Capstone Collection

Child sponsorship as a method of international development offers child sponsors a personal connection to the process of alleviating poverty in the global South. As a form of human development, child sponsorship is constituted by neoliberal principles of marketization and social entrepreneurship. How does child sponsorship, in this context, require us to rethink the ethics of international development in light of ongoing debates about neoliberalism? In this research, I argue that child sponsorship reifies the binary of the “developed” and “undeveloped” worlds. Through undertaking a content analysis of three organizations (Compassion International, World Vision, and UNICEF) and applying post-structural critique …

Medication Nonadherence, Health Care Utilization, And Safemed Care Transitions Model Impact In Super-Utilizers, Satya Surbhi

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

BACKGROUND: Super-utilizers are individuals with disproportionately high inpatient and emergency department (ED) use, and mostly have multiple chronic conditions and use multiple concurrent medications. They place a substantial burden on the U.S. healthcare system and have become the focus of policy initiatives aimed at reducing their disproportionate inpatient and ED use. Medication management is critical for these patients since nonadherence to essential chronic medications is associated with poor health outcomes, and higher health care utilization and costs. OBJECTIVES: This dissertation employed a three empirical research papers approach to study the following aims: (1) the prevalence and patterns of medication nonadherence …

There are a number of programs and resources available for foster parents and families interested in adopting through foster care in Alaska. However, there lacks a comprehensive single-point reference guide to explore the various paths. This research was conducted to identify resources available for families interested in learning about paths to adopt from foster care in Alaska …

Local Calibration Of The Highway Safety Manual For Four-Leg Stop-Controlled Intersections In Alaska, Thomas P. Moll Dec 2016

Local Calibration Of The Highway Safety Manual For Four-Leg Stop-Controlled Intersections In Alaska, Thomas P. Moll

Student Projects for Graduate Degrees

The Highway Safety Manual developed methodologies for consistently predicting accident rates that are useful in any location. These predictive accident rates can be adjusted to more closely match the reported accident rates in local areas by calculation of a calibration factor. In order to develop a calibration factor for four-leg stop-controlled intersections in Alaska, a sample of over 200 intersections was selected for analysis. From this sample, two groups of intersections meeting the criteria of four-leg stop-controlled intersections were selected. Information regarding site conditions, reported accident rates and physical characteristics was collected for each of the intersections included in the …

Subtractive Methods To Form Pyrite And Sulfide Nanostructures Of Fe, Co, Ni, Cu And Zn, Kurt W. Kolasinski Dec 2016

Subtractive Methods To Form Pyrite And Sulfide Nanostructures Of Fe, Co, Ni, Cu And Zn, Kurt W. Kolasinski

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The low Z metals Fe, Co, Ni, Cu and Zn are Earth abundant, i.e. inexpensive, and their sulfides are of low toxicity. This makes them appealing candidates for materials applications requiring semiconductors or, in the case of CoS2, a metal since they can potentially be produced in large quantities and low cost. Though of great potential little work has explored how subtractive methods can be used to form nanostructured and/or porous structures in, e.g. FeS2, CoS2, NiS, Cu2S and ZnS.

Testimonio Y Materialidad. El Encuentro Con El Espacio Y El Lugar (Testimonio And Materiality. The Encounter With Space And Place), Megan Corbin

Languages & Cultures Faculty Publications

This essay explores the individual dimension of the encounter with sites of memory in the Southern Cone post-dictatorship. It reveals the existence of a testimonial desire in connection with the former clandestine centers of detention, torture, and extermination in Argentina and Chile and proposes that this desire produces a frustrated encounter with the material in the moment in which the visitor arrives to the site of memory. It argues that this “incomplete” nature of the testimonial pact we have with the space is one of the most productive experiences the space could provide to the visitor because it puts the …

Reexamining Chronic Toxoplasma Gondii Infection: Surprising Activity For A "Dormant" Parasite, Anthony P. Sinai, Elizabeth A. Watts, Animesh Dhara, Robert D. Murphy, Matthew S. Gentry, Abhijit R. Patwardhan

Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications

Purpose of Review

Despite over a third of the world’s population being chronically infected with Toxoplasma gondii, little is known about this largely asymptomatic phase of infection. This stage is mediated in vivo by bradyzoites within tissue cysts. The absence of overt symptoms has been attributed to the dormancy of bradyzoites. In this review, we reexamine the conventional view of chronic toxoplasmosis in light of emerging evidence challenging both the nature of dormancy and the consequences of infection in the CNS.

Recent Findings

New and emerging data reveal a previously unrecognized level of physiological and replicative capacity of bradyzoites …

Keeping Big Cases From Making Bad Law: The Resurgent "Major Questions" Doctrine, Nathan D. Richardson Dec 2016

Keeping Big Cases From Making Bad Law: The Resurgent "Major Questions" Doctrine, Nathan D. Richardson

Faculty Publications

Recent Supreme Court decisions have made it clear that reports of the death of the “major questions” doctrine—under which judicial deference to agency interpretations of law (i.e. Chevron deference) is denied in certain “extraordinary cases”—are premature. The major questions doctrine is no mere legal curiosity; although invoked rarely, it has been central to important cases such as the Court’s recent decision to uphold key provisions of the Affordable Care Act. It also appears likely to play a role in the Court’s upcoming consideration of the EPA’s Clean Power Plan, the nation’s most significant and controversial climate change regulation.

I will examine my findings by answering the following questions to prove or deny that social media has enhanced the U.S. Military’s communication with its target audience. The first question is-Why did the U.S. Military change its strategy on using social media to manage communication? I am aiming to find out who or what events influenced this change …

Pain-Related Anxiety As A Predictor Of Early Lapse And Relapse To Cigarette Smoking, Lisa Renee Larowe Dec 2016

Pain-Related Anxiety As A Predictor Of Early Lapse And Relapse To Cigarette Smoking, Lisa Renee Larowe

Dissertations - ALL

Pain-related anxiety has been positively associated with tobacco dependence, smoking motives, self-reported barriers to smoking cessation, and expectancies for negative affect reduction via smoking. Although emerging research suggests that pain-related anxiety may play a role in the maintenance of tobacco dependence, no previous work has examined pain-related anxiety as a predictor of smoking cessation outcomes. The goal of the current study was to test the hypothesis that pain-related anxiety would predict early lapse and relapse to cigarette smoking among a sample of 55 daily tobacco smokers who participated in an unaided cessation attempt (i.e., without psychosocial or pharmacological intervention). Pain-related …

It also seeks to open a conversation within the field of communication and public relations on the trend of nation branding. With an aim of …

Statistical Mechanical Treatments Of The Optical Properties Of Cadmium Selenide Quantum Dots, Amogh Srihari Dec 2016

Statistical Mechanical Treatments Of The Optical Properties Of Cadmium Selenide Quantum Dots, Amogh Srihari

Dissertations - ALL

Semiconductors that exist in the nanoscale are referred to as Quantum Dots (QDs). This distinction is made because in the nanoscale, semiconductors behave much differently compared to their bulk counterparts. QDs possess band gaps that change based on their size and this unique property enables them to emit different colors, rendering them useful in a number of applications. QDs are widely used in LED technology and are becoming commonplace in biological applications involving in-vivo imaging. Efforts have gone into making QDs viable for photovoltaic applications as well. Although a lot is understood about the effects of size and shape on …

Kinetics Of Ketone Hydrogenation Over Supported Ru Catalysts, Omar Abdelrahman Ali Abdelrahman Dec 2016

Kinetics Of Ketone Hydrogenation Over Supported Ru Catalysts, Omar Abdelrahman Ali Abdelrahman

Dissertations - ALL

A kinetic investigation of the production of y-valerolactone (GVL) via the aqueous phase hydrogenation of levulinic acid (LA) over supported Ru catalysts was carried out, in order to understand how to better design a hydrogenation catalyst for such biomass catalytic strategies. At temperatures representative of biomass processing, the reaction proceeds first through the reduction of the LA ketone group to its corresponding alcohol, 4-hydroxypentanoic acid (HPA), which subsequently produces GVL via intramolecular esterification in solution. The governing kinetics of LA hydrogenation were found to be insensitive to the identity of the support material on which Ru catalysts were prepared. Conversely …

The Dynamics Of Conflict: Transforming Northern Ireland, Ronit Berger Dec 2016

The Dynamics Of Conflict: Transforming Northern Ireland, Ronit Berger

Dissertations - ALL

The main goal of this project is to gain a better understanding of the process of conflict transformation. More specifically, I wish to examine what are the circumstances that push Dual Wing Resistance Organizations (DWRO), and particularly, the Irish Provisional Republican Movement to behave in one of four different ways: convergent towards violence, convergence towards cooperation, divergence and confusion.

My main argument is that in order to understand conflict transformation processes and what pushes an organization to behave in a particular way one must look into the interaction between factors at three levels of analysis: the context, organizational dynamics and …

Sensor Management For Localization And Tracking In Wireless Sensor Networks, Nianxia Cao Dec 2016

Sensor Management For Localization And Tracking In Wireless Sensor Networks, Nianxia Cao

Dissertations - ALL

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are very useful in many application areas including battlefield surveillance, environment monitoring and target tracking, industrial processes and health monitoring and control. The classical WSNs are composed of large number of densely deployed sensors, where sensors are battery-powered devices with limited signal processing capabilities. In the crowdsourcing based WSNs, users who carry devices with built-in sensors are recruited as sensors. In both WSNs, the sensors send their observations regarding the target to a central node called the fusion center for final inference. With limited resources, such as limited communication bandwidth among the WSNs and limited sensor …
