Sensor Based Nitrogen Management For Corn Production In Coastal Plain Soils, Nicholas G. Rogers Dec 2016

Sensor Based Nitrogen Management For Corn Production In Coastal Plain Soils, Nicholas G. Rogers

All Theses

The first objective of this project was to develop, refine, and employ sensor-based algorithms to determine the mid-season nitrogen requirements for the production of irrigated corn in Coastal Plain soils. The second objective of this project was to develop an “on-the-go” variable rate nitrogen application system. One (1) production field at Clemson’s Edisto Research and Education Center in Blackville, SC was used in the development and refinement of the sensor-based algorithm. This field was equipped with overhead irrigation, and was used in both the 2015 and 2016 growing seasons. The crop was not under scheduled irrigation, the overhead (lateral) irrigation …

Cell Source Optimization For Cardiac Tissue Engineering, Joshua Biggs Dec 2016

Cell Source Optimization For Cardiac Tissue Engineering, Joshua Biggs

All Theses

Myocardial infarction (MI) is one of the leading causes of death associated with cardiovascular disease affecting approximately 735,000 Americans each year. The resulting damage caused by MI initiates a pathological progression towards congestive heart failure. Donor shortages rule out transplantation as a viable treatment option and coronary revascularization does not solve the issue of regenerating the infarct scar. Stem cell therapies, however, show great potential, but have been largely unsuccessful at regenerating diseased myocardium. This study aims to differentiate human adipose derived stem cells (hADSCs) by methods of co-culture and chemical induction to produce functional cardiomyocytes, as well as by …

Evaluating The Impact Of Emergency Department Facility Design On Healthcare Workers' Perception Of Safety, Mary A. Hobbs Dec 2016

Evaluating The Impact Of Emergency Department Facility Design On Healthcare Workers' Perception Of Safety, Mary A. Hobbs

All Theses

Facility design has been identified as a factor resulting in improved patient safety and quality care regarding patient movement, patient visibility, and standardized caregiving (Reiling et al., 2004). Despite research indicating violence towards healthcare workers (HCWs) can be improved through facility design changes (Catlette, 2005; Gates, 2004), there is very little literature examining the relationship between hospital design characteristics and the perception of HCW’s safety (Peek-Asa et al., 2007). The objective of this research is to understand the impact of emergency department (ED) facility design on the HCW’s perception of patient safety, their own safety, and workplace efficiency (i.e., their …

Young adults with ASD experience difficulties with social skills, empathy, loneliness, and social anxiety. One intervention, PEERS® for Young Adults, shows promise in addressing these challenges. The present study replicated and extended the original study by recruiting a larger sample (N = 56), employing a gold standard ASD assessment tool, and examining changes in social anxiety utilizing a randomized controlled trial design. Results indicated improvements in social responsiveness (SSIS-RS SS, p = .006 and CPB, p = .005; SRS, p = .004), PEERS® knowledge (TYASSK, p = .001), empathy (EQ, p = .044), direct interactions (QSQ-YA, p = …

Predicting Aggression In Late Adolescent Romantic Relationships: A Short-Term Longitudinal Study, Christina Caiozzo, Jessica Houston, John H. Grych Dec 2016

Predicting Aggression In Late Adolescent Romantic Relationships: A Short-Term Longitudinal Study, Christina Caiozzo, Jessica Houston, John H. Grych

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

This study sought to prospectively predict aggression in the romantic relationships of 1180 college students from the United States (807 females; 373 males) over the course of two months with a set of intrapersonal risk and protective factors, including personality characteristics that rarely have been examined in this population. After accounting for prior dating aggression, perpetration of verbal aggression was predicted uniquely by aggressive attitudes, emotion regulation, and for females, narcissism. Perpetration of physical aggression was predicted by aggressive attitudes, but only at low levels of emotion regulation, and the interaction of callous-unemotional traits, emotion regulation, and gender: males with …

The Corona Problem For Kernel Multiplier Algebras, Eric T. Sawyer, Brett D. Wick Dec 2016

The Corona Problem For Kernel Multiplier Algebras, Eric T. Sawyer, Brett D. Wick

Mathematics Faculty Research

We prove an alternate Toeplitz corona theorem for the algebras of pointwise kernel multipliers of Besov-Sobolev spaces on the unit ball in C, and for the algebra of bounded analytic functions on certain strictly pseudoconvex domains and polydiscs in higher dimensions as well. This alternate Toeplitz corona theorem extends to more general Hilbert function spaces where it does not require the complete Pick property. Instead, the kernel functions kx (y) of certain Hilbert function spaces H are assumed to be invertible multipliers on H and then we continue a research thread begun by Agler and McCarthy in 1999, and continued …

The Void Between Us, Hannah D. Blumer Dec 2016

The Void Between Us, Hannah D. Blumer

Bachelor of Fine Arts Senior Papers

My interactive thesis installation, The Void Between Us, addresses the topic of human connection in relationship to the body. The human body marks a physical barrier between one’s self and others. While we exist in the same physical sphere as one another, our minds are isolated in our own self-centered versions of reality. Our bodies allow us to perceive others and be perceived—including having verbal communications—and, therefore, could be seen as helpful or restrictive in the social world. However, our bodies also allow us to engage in physical interactions with others, such as sex, which is a means to …

"The Best Soil Of Their Hearts": Protestant Explorations Of Catholic Spirituality In Cooper, Longfellow, And Hawthorne, Amy Oatis Dec 2016

"The Best Soil Of Their Hearts": Protestant Explorations Of Catholic Spirituality In Cooper, Longfellow, And Hawthorne, Amy Oatis

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation examines the works of James Fenimore Cooper, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and Nathaniel Hawthorne, focusing upon their explorations of Roman Catholic spirituality, as reflected in their poetry, prose, and personal writings. Despite the anti-Romanism prevalent in nineteenth-century American political and religious culture, these authors engaged deeply with Catholic sacramentality, discovering an appeal in the Catholic faith tradition that provided possible answers to questions about spirituality in an increasingly pluralistic democratic society. The first chapter explores the aesthetic appeal of Roman Catholic sacramentals that attracted the attention of Cooper, Longfellow, and Hawthorne. The second chapter connects Catholic sacramentality to the …

Every great story is full of interesting characters, and one of those characters is always the hero. In each and every story, that hero wants something. Our hero is the GVSU Meijer Campus in Holland, Michigan, but as it is now, that hero is weak, lonely, and not flourishing. Our hero wants to be relevant for the Holland community, but it needs to overcome underutilization to get there. However, what makes a story great is not the resolution; rather, it is the transformation of the hero. Join us in our journey as we design thinkers work to transform the identity …

Working For Veggies: A Workshare Program At The Grand Valley State University Sustainable Agriculture Project, Robin Gessner, Cassie Pataro, Maggie Tisdale, Hayley Thiele

Liberal Studies Undergraduate Research

Grand Valley State University’s Sustainable Agriculture Project – often abbreviated to the SAP – grows a wide variety of produce while teaching students about environmental and social issues surrounding food. However, the GVSU student body is generally unaware of the SAP’s purpose or existence. In addition, the food being grown at the SAP does not always end up in the hands of students, while at the same time many students have difficulties affording healthy foods. We sought to find a solution to all of these problems. Through multiple brainstorming processes and consultations with various stakeholders, we were able to create …

Summary Reversals In The Roberts Court, Edward A. Hartnett Dec 2016

Summary Reversals In The Roberts Court, Edward A. Hartnett

Cardozo Law Review

The article examines the use of summary reversals by the Roberts Court, arguing that these decisions—where the Court reverses lower court rulings without full briefing or oral argument—serve important administrative functions and address specific types of errors, despite longstanding criticism. The author identifies patterns in the areas of law and types of errors targeted by these reversals, concluding that the practice persists due to its utility in maintaining judicial hierarchy and efficiency, even as critics question its propriety.

John Roberts And Constitutional Law, Brianne J. Gorod Dec 2016

John Roberts And Constitutional Law, Brianne J. Gorod

Cardozo Law Review

The article examines Chief Justice John Roberts's judicial approach during his first decade on the Supreme Court, highlighting his generally conservative jurisprudence while noting instances where institutional concerns about the Court's legitimacy led him to prioritize law over ideology. Roberts's record reflects a tension between his conservative ideological convictions and his commitment to the Court's institutional reputation.

Fallacies In The Current Methods Of Prosecuting International Commercial Bribery, Ira Handa Dec 2016

Fallacies In The Current Methods Of Prosecuting International Commercial Bribery, Ira Handa

Cardozo Law Review

The note argues that the current legal framework for prosecuting international commercial bribery is inadequate and inconsistent compared to the robust regime established for international public bribery under the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA). It advocates for comprehensive federal legislation specifically addressing international commercial bribery, modeled after the FCPA but tailored to the private sector, to bridge this gap and address the significant harms caused by such bribery.

An Architectural Framework For Global Talent Management, Shad S. Morris, Scott Snell, Ingmar Björkman Dec 2016

An Architectural Framework For Global Talent Management, Shad S. Morris, Scott Snell, Ingmar Björkman

Faculty Publications

A unique characteristic of the multinational corporation is that it consists of culturally diverse employees that embody both firm-specific and location-specific human capital. This paper takes an architectural approach to describe how different types of human capital develop from the individual level, to the unit level, and then to the firm level in order to build a talent portfolio for the multinational corporation. Depending on the company’s strategy (multidomestic, meganational, transnational), different configurations of the talent portfolio tend to be emphasized and integrated to achieve competitive advantage. Implications for theory and practice are discussed and a research agenda is introduced.

Kinematics Card Sort Activity: Insight Into Students’ Thinking, Erin Berryhill, Deborah Herrington, Keith Oliver Dec 2016

Kinematics Card Sort Activity: Insight Into Students’ Thinking, Erin Berryhill, Deborah Herrington, Keith Oliver

Peer Reviewed Articles

Kinematics is a topic students are unknowingly aware of well before entering the physics classroom. Students observe motion on a daily basis. They are constantly interpreting and making sense of their observations, unintentionally building their own understanding of kinematics before receiving any formal instruction. Unfortunately, when students take their prior conceptions to understand a new situation, they often do so in a way that inaccurately connects their learning. We were motivated to identify strategies to help our students make accurate connections to their prior knowledge and understand kinematics at a deeper level. To do this, we integrated a formative assessment …

Food And Energy For All, Bradley Stevens, Stephen Rybczynski, Deborah Herrington

Peer Reviewed Articles

When asked what plants need for photosynthesis, many students can correctly recall the reaction equation and state that plants require CO2, H2O, and light. Many students, however, do not understand that these reactants are the raw materials plants use to make sugars and instead believe that they are food for plants. Moreover, when questioned further, students often voice the idea that plants get their food from the soil (Kestler 2014). This is consistent with findings that fewer than half of current middle and high school students have a correct understanding of the process of photosynthesis (AAAS 2015). We developed this …

A Novel Supercell-Based Dielectric Grating Dual-Beam Leaky-Wave Antenna For 60-Ghz Applications, Zi Long Ma, Kung Bo Ng, Chi Hou Chan, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This communication proposes a novel dual-beam dielectric grating antenna based on the supercell (SC) concept. Through the theoretical analysis of the effective phase constants of the SC, it is found that two space harmonic modes (m=-1 and m=-2) can be simultaneously excited (above the air line) within a certain frequency range. This phenomenon leads to the generation of two radiation beams in the far-field region. At the frequency where the phase constants satisfy β-1=-β-2, the two beams are in symmetric directions with respect to the axis that is perpendicular to the azimuth plane. Different from the conventional periodic structures that …
