Tunneling nanotubes (TNTs) are ultrafine, filamentous actin-based cytoplasmic extensions which form spontaneously to connect cells at short and long-range distances. We have previously described long-range intercellular communication via TNTs connecting mesothelioma cells in vitro and demonstrated TNTs in intact tumors from patients with mesothelioma. Here, we investigate the ability of TNTs to mediate a viral thymidine kinase based bystander effect after oncolytic viral infection and administration of the nucleoside analog ganciclovir. Using confocal microscopy we assessed the ability of TNTs to propagate enhanced green fluorescent protein (eGFP), which is encoded by the herpes simplex virus NV1066, from infected to uninfected …

The groundbreaking detection of gravitational waves produced by the inspiralling and coales- cence of the black hole (BH) binary GW150914 confirms the existence of ‘heavy’ stellar-mass BHs with masses >25 M . Initial characterization of the system by Abbott et al. supposes that the formation of BHs with such large masses from the evolution of single massive stars is only feasible if the wind mass-loss rates of the progenitors were greatly reduced relative to the mass-loss rates of massive stars in the Galaxy, concluding that heavy BHs must form in low-metallicity (Z ,:S 0.25 0.5 Z ) environments. However, strong …
The Learned Hand Unformula For Short-Swing Liability, Andrew Chin
The Learned Hand Unformula For Short-Swing Liability, Andrew Chin
Washington Law Review
Section 16(b) of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934 allows for the recovery of short-swing profits realized by certain insiders from trading in a corporation’s stock within a period of less than six months. Three generations of corporate law students have been taught the “lowest-in, highest-out” formula that is intended to maximize the disgorgement of short-swing profits under section 16(b). Arnold Jacobs’s 1987 treatise presented two hypothetical examples where the formula fell short of the intended maximum, but courts, commentators, and practitioners have largely ignored these theoretical challenges to the formula’s validity. This Article identifies Gratz v. Claughton as the …

Looking Backward, Looking Forward: The Long, Torturous Struggle With Mosquitoes, Gordon M. Patterson
Arts and Communication Faculty Publications
The American anti-mosquito movement grew out of the discovery of the role of mosquitoes in transferring pathogens and public concern about pest and nuisance mosquitoes in the late 1800s. In the 20th century, organized mosquito control in the United States passed through three eras: mechanical, chemical, and integrated mosquito control. Mosquito control in the 21st century faces the challenge of emerging pathogens, invasive mosquito species, and balancing concerns about the environment with effective control strategies.
Molecular Measurement Of Toxicity In Fish; Case Examples And Policy Implications, Jessica A. Freedman
Molecular Measurement Of Toxicity In Fish; Case Examples And Policy Implications, Jessica A. Freedman
Senior Honors Projects
Stormwater and oil are common urban contaminants that can be harmful to fish species. One way of recognizing exposed and impaired fish is by monitoring gene expression and gene induction. This study focused on the identification and validation of reference genes for measuring contaminant-induced changes in gene expression due to urban influence. In this study, reference genes (which are genes used to normalize data and remain consistent in varying exposures regardless of organism and tissue type) were established. Six genes were identified as reference genes (ef1a, wdtc1, mtm1, spop, rxrba and tuba1) from a longer list of potential …
Improving Our Understanding Of Ocean Circulation: A Modeling Study, Nicole M. Flecchia
Improving Our Understanding Of Ocean Circulation: A Modeling Study, Nicole M. Flecchia
Senior Honors Projects
The Gulf Stream is not a rigidly contained ocean current; it curves and meanders in a manner that causes portions of it to go unstable, breaking off to form warm core rings. These rings travel west – due to the earth’s rotation - through the Slope Sea and onto the southern New England shelfbreak, affecting various physical parameters of our coastal waters as well as the biogeochemical and ecological properties (i.e. the ‘health’) of the those waters. Where a warm core ring lands along the east coast and the time of year it appears varies with each ring, causing each …

Information and media literacy are essential for today’s children and teens as they navigate an increasingly saturated information environment. Educators at all levels must seek to communicate and teach the skills that students need to evaluate, understand, and use information in engaging and innovative ways. This paper highlights such an effort by librarians and staff at Florida Institute of Technology in the planning and implementation of a camp called “What We Know: Understanding Media and Its Influence.” The camp was administered by five library staff and attended by ten teens between the ages of 12 and 16. Throughout the camp, …

Tunnel Vision: Causes, Effects, And Mitigation Strategies, Brian Reichart
Hofstra Law Review
The author discusses his experience concerning a case of actual innocence involving murder defendant Patricia "Patty" Prewitt with little chance of judicial remedy because of what is referred to as tunnel vision via confirmation bias on the part of legal authorities concerning the criminal investigation and subsequent trial of Prewitt, particularly a single-minded theory of culpability based on the gathered evidence. The article also discusses possible strategies of tunnel vision mitigation.

Doctor of Education in Instructional Technology Dissertations
ABSTRACT
This study provided a descriptive analysis of learning outcomes in both online and face-to-face grades 9-12 physical science courses. Archived data from a single school system were used for a comparative analysis of learning outcomes in high school physical science between students enrolled in online classes and students enrolled in face-to-face classes. The study compared two years of summative assessment scores of two student groups and, overall, found equality between the two learning environments. Online learning outcomes and face-to-face learning outcomes were similar for both school years, 2013-2014 and 2014-2015. The overall comparison between learning environments was further examined …
The Role Of Nutrition Education And Active Choice To Increase Fruit And Vegetable Consumption Among Second Grade Students During Lunchtime, Robyn M. Cafiero
The Role Of Nutrition Education And Active Choice To Increase Fruit And Vegetable Consumption Among Second Grade Students During Lunchtime, Robyn M. Cafiero
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Fruit and vegetable intake within the United States is considerably lower than the standards set by the United States Department of Agriculture. With this information, there is no surprise that these rates are especially low for school aged children. Although many studies have tried to incorporate programs that would effectively increase the consumption of fruits and vegetables among youngsters, many have fallen short with being able to sustain consumption over time. This study provided a way to increase fruit and vegetable consumption during lunchtime for second grade students by using a dual module of the Social Cognitive Theory and active …

Ballistic Resistance Of Plain Woven P-Aramid Fabrics, B Kusuktham, S Udon, M Jitjaicham
Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals
This research investigated the ballistic resistance of p-Aramid fabric. Plain woven aramid fabrics were prepared to produce bulletproof vest having 5 kg of 32 fabric layers. The performance of the multilayer aramid fabrics in terms of ballistic resistance was evaluated by ballistic testing with the difference types of bullet. The damage of the fabric and the indentation of modeling clay behind the target were examined. The results showed that vests prepared from 18 - 32 fabric layers exhibited the ballistic resistance; the more the fabric layer the more the resistance performance. In addition, the indentation of the modeling clay decreased …

Compressive Properties And Imaging Analysis Of A New Metal Foam-Natural Rubber Hybrid Structure, A Chaturvedi, G Sanyal, S Chaturvedi, As Patil
Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals
In this study an attempt has been made to create a new hybrid structure. The hybrid structure has been made by hierarchically combining closed cell Aluminum foam and natural rubber. The hybrid structure, when subjected to compressive loading, displayed improved energy absorption characteristics compared to its parent monoliths. It also displayed significant strain recovery post deformation. High resolution imaging was also carried out to compare the internal structure of hybrid samples before and after compression. Critical discussion of the experimental results has been made.

Grading refers to the symbols assigned to individual pieces of student work or to composite measures of student performance on report cards. This review of over 100 years of research on grading considers five types of studies: (a) early studies of the reliability of grades, (b) quantitative studies of the composition of K–12 report card grades, (c) survey and interview studies of teachers’ perceptions of grades, (d) studies of standards-based grading, and (e) grading in higher education. Early 20th-century studies generally condemned teachers’ grades as unreliable. More recent studies of the relationships of grades to tested achievement and survey studies …
Drone Zoning, Troy A. Rule
Drone Zoning, Troy A. Rule
North Carolina Law Review
The growing popularity of small civilian drones has generated a wide array of complex and unprecedented regulatory challenges. Many of these challenges, such as keeping drones away from manned aircraft, are matters that the Federal Aviation Administration (“FAA”) is clearly authorized and well equipped to address. However, several other drone policy challenges relate solely to drones’ potential to disrupt landowners’ privacy and to otherwise interfere with activities on the ground. The nature and severity of these conflicts often varies greatly depending on a drone’s specific location; drone uses that are welcomed in some city neighborhoods may be prohibitively disruptive in …

The Impact Of Leverage On Hedge Fund Performance, Wansoo Choi
The Impact Of Leverage On Hedge Fund Performance, Wansoo Choi
Financial Analyst
In this paper, the effect of leverage on hedge fund performance is measured. TASS data from 1994 to 2016 are used to measure the impact of leverage on hedge fund performance. Three hedge fund performance measurements are regressed on degree of leverage with eight control variables including fund size, strategies, and use of derivatives. The results show that for strategyadjusted return as a performance measurement, hedge fund leverage has a negative impact on fund performance. Also there is evidence of diseconomies of scale where funds with medium-sized assets under management (AUM) tend to show better performance than funds with high …

Hollow Fiber Membranes For Artificial Lung Applications, Lauren Reed
Hollow Fiber Membranes For Artificial Lung Applications, Lauren Reed
Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Artificial lungs are in use, but difficult issues remain in the field of membrane development related to fouling issues. Currently there are external artificial lungs circulating blood outside the body, taking out the carbon dioxide, and inserting oxygenated blood back into the body. An example of this type of machine is the ExtraCorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) machine currently used in hospitals. The ECMO takes over the functions for both the lungs and the heart but is only available for short term use by patients with respiratory failure due to infections [1]. The fibers in the machine develop fouling due to …

Biology
Marine species with planktonic larvae often have high spatial and temporal variation in recruitment that leads to subsequent variation in the ecology of benthic adults. Using a combination of published and unpublished data, we compared the population structure of the salt marsh snail, Littoraria irrorata, between the South Atlantic Bight and the Gulf Coast of the United States to infer geographic differences in recruitment and to test the hypothesis that the Deepwater Horizon oil spill led to widespread recruitment failure of L. irrorata in Louisiana in 2010. Size-frequency distributions in both ecoregions were bimodal, with troughs in the distributions consistent …
Pass-Through And The Prediction Of Merger Price Effects, N. H. Miller, Marc Remer, C. Ryan, G. Sheu
Pass-Through And The Prediction Of Merger Price Effects, N. H. Miller, Marc Remer, C. Ryan, G. Sheu
Economics Faculty Works
We use Monte Carlo experiments to study how pass-through can improve merger price predictions, focusing on the first order approximation (FOA) proposed in Jaffe and Weyl [2013]. FOA addresses the functional form misspecification that can exist in standard merger simulations. We find that the predictions of FOA are tightly distributed around the true price effects if pass-through is precise, but that measurement error in pass-through diminishes accuracy. As a comparison to FOA, we also study a methodology that uses pass-through to select among functional forms for use in simulation. This alternative also increases accuracy relative to standard merger simulation and …
Surveillance Policy Making By Procurement, Catherine Crump
Surveillance Policy Making By Procurement, Catherine Crump
Washington Law Review
In Seattle, the police obtained a surveillance drone with the approval of a city council that did not realize what it was doing. In Oakland, following a council review that lasted literally two minutes, the city created a data integration center that networked together all of its existing surveillance infrastructure. In San Diego, elected representatives were only dimly aware that the law enforcement agency they supervised had built and deployed innovative facial recognition technology. In an age of heightened concern about the militarization of local police and surveillance technology, how do local law enforcement agencies obtain cutting edge and potentially …
